good friday morning to you. i'm reena ninan, in for diana perez. >> i'm john muller. we begin with breaking news from overseas. a car bomb has exploded outside of a major hotel in downtown beirut. just steps from parliament and government buildings. >> at least five people were killed. including a top aide to the former prime minister. lebanon has seen a wave of violence in the past months, as fallout from the civil war in syria. and we have some more breaking news out of california, where a small plane crashed in the front of a home, killing two people. the plane went down overnight near fresno's chandler executive airport. >> investigators say the pilot took off from that airport before crashing. and the plane may have clipped a tree. it's believed a man and 9-year-old boy were the only ones onboard. no one in the house was injured. the christmas nightmare continues for many in the northern parts of the country, especially maine and michigan. tens of thousands are still without power or heat, after snow and ice storms last weekend. >> and utilities warn they might not get their lights back on until the weekend. now, some spent the holiday in shelters. others are toughing it out at

home. >> we have a generator now. in the beginning, it was a little rough. >> my kids are at home in the warm. playing playstation and xbox. and these kids up here, just trying to stay warm. >> at least five storm-related deaths were caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. possibly from generators that were not properly ventilated. for the weekend forecast, we're going to get more right now from abc meteorologist, ginger zee. >> there is a brief warm-up. it's going to come along with a coastal storm. mostly rain in the southeast, saturday into sunday. and look at that. it starts mixing with snow late sunday. not so great for travels. and behind that big-time bitter cold for the new year. ginger zee, abc news, new york. >> ginger, thank you. taking a look at the temperatures across the country today. the mercury will reach 78 in los angeles. 30 degrees less in seattle and portland. kansas city will see a high of 43. minneapolis, 36 degrees. >> memphis and atlanta both reach 55 degrees. chicago and detroit's highs will be right around freezing.

new york, well, it will flirt with 40. u.p.s. and federal express are still scrambling this morning to deliver late packages that missed the christmas deadline. >> for many customers, the effort's too little, too late. abc's kristin fisher has the very latest on the shipping troubles. >> reporter: u.p.s. and fedex are still working in overdrive, to deliver packages promised by christmas that never made it. >> it was pretty bad. it was really disappointing. >> reporter: maurine now has to explain to her son why his gift from santa will be late. >> santa -- he accidentally dropped it off of his sleigh. >> reporter: and she's not alone. people all over the country are furious. in chicago, live lobsters for a christmas eve dinner arrived two days late. and in california, people were lined up outside this u.p.s. shipping center before the doors even opened on the day after christmas. >> they're not getting that gift delivered on time for christmas. disappointed their relatives and family.

clearly, that can have a significant impact of the psychology around what they do next year. >> reporter: consumer experts say this delivery debacle could push consumers to do less online shopping next year. it could also be a big boost for smaller, rival shipping companies. both u.p.s. and fedex have apologized, blaming the delays on a perfect storm of bad weather, high demand, and the shorter delivery season. but that's little comfort to people who counted on those companies to make sure santa's gifts showed up on time. >> they know it's going to happen every year. they know it's going to be heavier volume of shipments. and also, they anticipate they know the weather's not going to be the best. >> reporter: one of u.p.s.'s biggest customers, amazon, says it will refund shipping charges an all of those late packages. a senator from connecticut is now urging u.p.s. to do the same. and that might not be such a bad idea. john and reena? >> kristin, live in washington. thank you so much. new this morning, a diplomatic breakthrough in japan over the fate of a u.s. marine

base on okinawa. the local governor has signed off on the relocation of the base from a congested part of the city to a remote area, ending a simmering dispute between the u.s. and japan. the deal will help the pentagon better line american forces across the asia-pacific region. a snowboarder has died after he triggered an avalanche. this happened in the back country near jackson hole, wyoming, a popular place for skiers and snowboarders. 29-year-old michael cazangi was the first to go down the slope. he was immediately buried in the avalanche. rescuers, including a doctor, tried to revive him. but he was pronounced dead at the scene. police in phoenix say the man who scaled an airport fence and started hitting a plane that had just arrived was under the influence of drugs and alcohol. the surveillance video shows the man striking a southwest airlines plane before officers were able to detain him. it comes after the airport spent $10 million on a recent security upgrade, after a man drove on to

the runway in a stolen truck. >> you are safe as a traveler here. a person who tries to do something like that is in grave danger. and he's very lucky to be alive today. >> the man has been booked on a misdemeanor charge of entering a restricted area. the man accused of a shooting rampage inside l.a.x. that left a tsa screener dead and three others wounded has pleaded not guilty. paul ciancia was wounded before that arrest. he appeared less than three minutes before a judge. u.s. attorney general eric holder will have to ultimately decide if ciancia will face the death penalty if he is convicted. and funeral services set today, for a mississippi police officer who was gunned down after a bank robbery. the fbi has joined the search for the suspect, seen in surveillance tape entering the bank with gun drawn. gale stauffer, a 38-year-old iraq war veteran, was killed. another officer was severely wounded. we may learn more today about the connecticut school shooting a year ago. state police will reveal more details from their investigation, following a

summary report a month ago. the conclusion is still the same. adam lanza acted alone. in killing 20 first graders, 6 staffers and then himself. lanza reportedly destroyed his computer's hard drive before going to the school. the fbi is still trying to rebuild it to learn lanza's motive. all county clerks in utah, now issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. four counties that had been holding out now say they will comply with the federal court ruling that struck down the state's ban on gay marriage. the state plans to ask its supreme court as soon as today to stop issuing licenses until an appeal can be heard. another spacewalk is taking place this morning outside the international space station. just three days after american astronauts helped replace a failed cooling pump, a russian team is venturing out. this time, two cosmonauts are installing two new cameras. their walk is expected to last six hours. oops, they did it again. an airline mistake one company made that gave some customers some very cheap fares. >> if only we knew. >> i love when that happens.

all right. welcome back. another day. another record for the markets. the dow jones industrial average closing at a record high for the 6th day in a row, the 50th time this year. the s&p also set a record. investors were encouraged by fewer than expected unemployment claims last week. more than 1 million out of

work americans are ending their year on an especially bleak note. benefits run out tomorrow for people who have been unemployed for more than 26 weeks. an emergency program had been sending checks since the recession in 2008. congress did not renew that program. new jersey will be hit hardest. 90,000 people there are losing benefits. good news for retailers this holiday season. it appears christmas spending is up. retail sales this year, rising almost 2.5%. more than three-times last year's growth. it might have been better if not for the weather. the big story is online sales. on christmas day alone, they rose more than 16%. and much of that was due to amazon, which had its best-ever holiday shopping season. the online giant sold almost 37 million items on cyber monday. an average of 426 a second. more than half of its customers shopped with a mobile device. some lucky airline travelers will be enjoying a late christmas present. supercheap fares from delta airlines.

round-trip tickets were going for as low as $20 yesterday because of a glitch on delta's website. customers snapped up the rock-bottom bargains for about two hours before the airlines noticed the problem and then fixed it. delta says it will honor the prices. something similar happened to united back in december. >> why doesn't that happen when i'm online? >> i know. i need an alert for that. an app. >> an app would be good. let's develop it. we'll all get rich. when we come back, a dramatic rescue caught on camera. an officer reaches into a burning car and saves a driver's life. this morning, the hero is talking about what happened. a retired football player turned schoolteacher. hitting the gridiron for one game. the surprising move he's making with the money for the start of that one-day salary.

about 35 cars and trucks colliding in a chain-reaction crash on the snow-covered pennsylvania turnpike, backing up traffic for miles. about 25 people were taken to the hospital. dozens of others, treated at the scene. road conditions today should be better in pennsylvania and most of the rest of the northeast. no precipitation, though. but highways near the great lakes may be snow-covered. they may be wet along the gulf coast down into florida. and in the pacific northwest. >> we don't expect any major airport delays today anywhere in the country. back to the news. new details this morning from a paramedic who treated victims in a piranha attack in argentina. >> a school of flesh-eating fish went on the attack on christmas day. unsuspecting families tried to cool off in stifling heat waves there. more than 70 people were hurt. a paramedic working on the victims said about eight children had serious injuries, including losing parts of their fingers and toes. experts believe the heat wave also drew the piranha to the water. a tragedy of legend football coach bobby bowden.

bowden's 23-year-old grandson killed in a car accident. t.j. bowden was a passenger in a car that flipped into a canal in central florida yesterday. police say alcohol played a role in the crash. the driver of the car was also killed. a third passenger survived. the lapd bomb squad officer who pulled a man from a burning vehicle after a freeway crash says he's not a hero. the dramatic rescue was caught on tape by another motorist. don thompson was driving to work when he saw the car crash and burst into flames. thompson, a 20-year department veteran stopped his bomb squad truck, jumped over the divider, cut the unconscious man from his seat belt and pulled him out. >> i said, hey. it's now or never. i mean, either you're going to get him out or he's just going to burn alive. i grabbed him with two hands. and i start pulling him out. >> the driver has now been arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. now to an impressive new title for king james. the miami heat star, lebron

we could see another day of light traffic. we have plenty of green. that means green is go and we are at top speeds. in the east bay we have construction projects eastbound 80 from powell to buchanan with lanes blocked off until 5:00 this morning. watch out for that. drive time traffic tracy to dublin is 22 minutes and highway 4 and 101 through marin county is looking great. to the east bay we are looking at 680 southbound from pleasant hill to walnut creek, wide open. eric? >> thank you very much. we have another development in the case of a brain dead 13-year-old girl in oakland. dead de's family wants to move her from children's hospital and they have all the pieces in ple but the hospital is balking. nick is in the newsroom with more. >> the story with jahi mcmath has a new twist. children's hospital oakland will help the 13-year-old family move her to a different facility but

argue the move should not include new treatment. an undisclosed medical care facility is offering to cake in 13-year-old jahi mcmath but they are requiring she have a surgically implanted feeding tube and a medical procedure that the insurance is willing to pay for. children's hospital oakland is refusing to do this. she suffered complications after what the family describes as routine tonsillectomy that left her brain dead and on a ventilator. last tuesday, a superior court judge ruled jahi mcmath was deceased and children's hospital oakland only needed to maintain her current level of care until further testing could be performed. >> you don't want her, that is fine, we have a place that wants her and wants to keep her alive. help us get her out of your hospital so we can take her somewhere elsewhere someone wants to help us keep her alive. >> the judge did not authorize or order surgical procedures or
