live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. now at 5:00, new year's eve turns tragic in the east bay. a mother is killed and her baby and her sister are hospitalized after they are hit by a pickup truck. we will have a report ahead. new video just in to the newsroom shows an overturned car on a busy bay area freeway ramp. the impact on the early morning holiday commute. look at this: san francisco kicking off 2014 with a big bang. in fact, many big bangs. ahead we have the fireworks and crowds at the biggest new year's eve celebration. it is january 1, 2014. thank you very much for starting

9 new year with us. i am kristen sze. we will check with meteorologist, mike nicco, to see how the new year is starting with us. >> happy new year. now, look at the visibility compared to yesterday. it is cleaner. we have fog forming, 1.75 visibility in novato. that is the only place that will see much. look how cheer it is from mount tamalpais. you can see all the way down to the san mateo bridge this morning. the first forecast shows it will be warm again, near record high temperatures, and mid-to-upper 60's inland, and low pressure low-to-upper 60's at the bay and no burning of wood through midnight because it is "spare the air" again. >> it is a holiday but this are problems. the biggest problem right now is a sig-alert northbound 101 at the north bound 680 ramp. this is in san jose.

that connection ramp is shut down right now because of an overturned vehicle in one lane but cruise are blocking the other lane. the lane will be shut down until further notice. expect delays. it is the holiday with a lot of people having been out celebrating so be careful. right now, the bay bridge toll plaza is looking fairly light and not many cars crossing at the moment. i imagine there are more leaving the city rather than trying to get to the city right now. c.h.p. has issue add sig-alert for the lake shore avenue park boulevard on-ramp on interstate 580, shut down after 2:30 this morning, following a fatal accident. investigators say a car overturn on the roof trapping a person under the car. the drivers are advised to expect delays and use alternate routes with no estimated time for re-opening. >> fremont police are investigating a fatal new year's eve accident, a young mother is

dead, and her baby injured after they and the mother's sister were hit by a vehicle. we are on the scene at paseo padre parkway and mowry. >> major street in fremont there was a major accident beyond the busy intersection. police say three people crossing the street were hit, a 17-year-old girl, her 19-year-old sister, and the woman's three-month-old baby boy. the 19-year-old was carrying the baby and she was killed. her baby was taken to the hospital and is suffering from life-threatening injuries. the 17 yearly was taken to the hospital but is expected to survive. police say the driver did stay at the seen and it did not appear he was drinking. >> we have not determined fault. we have to get statements, look at physical evidence, and investigate and figure out what we have before we put it

together. police say the driver is a 64-year-old man and he is cooperating with the investigation. the officers say the woman and the girl were not in a crosswalk as they crossed the street. this happened just before 10:00 last night and officers are asking that anyone who may have seen this accident to give investigators a call. san francisco police are investigating a similar tragedy: a little girl is dead and two are injured after being hit by a car crossing the street. katie marzullo is at sfo general. katie? >> yes, a woman, a mother and her four-year-old son were brought to san francisco general and they are expected to be okay but the woman's seven-year-old daughter was killed. this accident happened last night around 8:00. the three people, the woman and two children, were in a crosswalk on a green light and the driver of a honda s.u.v. was

turning on a green light and he hit them dragging them several feet. police say there is no indication that the driver was drinking or was on drugs but he was arrested. >> the driver of the vehicle did remain on the scene and did speak with police investigators from our traffic commission investigations unit. during the course of the investigation, probable cause was developed to charge the driver with gross vehicular manslaughter. >> that was the second deadly incident yesterday. much earlier at 3:30 in the afternoon, a driver hit an 87 -year-old man. it is not clear if the man, the victim, was in the crosswalk or in the street but the drive did stop and he called 9-1-1. the driver is cooperating but that driver, also, was arrested for gross vehicular manslaughter. we have two people dead including a little girl, both incidents long before any new year's eve celebration would have been underway in san francisco.

in a week, the family of a girl declared brain dead, will make a case at a federal hearing that she be kept on a ventilator. jahi mcmath has been on the devis since her heart stopped after surgery three weeks afternoon to remove her tonsils. children's hospital oakland has declared her brain dead and wants it remove her from the ventilators. the relatives say they have seen lines of life and want her moved to a new facility. jahi mcmath would need a feeding tube procedure but the family says the hospital refuses to do it. >> the reality is the reality. there is no pleasant way to say anything other than to say this young woman is dead. >> we want children's hospital oakland to help us or get out of our way. >> the family says a facility in new york will take her but it is not clear if the facility is equipped to handle her needs. the two sides will rent their evidence to a federal judge on january 7. >> gilroy police are on the look out for a bank robber.

this is surveillance video from the bank. the robber demanded money from a teller at the union bank before 4 yesterday afternoon. he did not she a weapon during the robbery. police say he ran off but they could not track him down. >> the first morning of 2014 and last night tens of thousands lined the embarcadero to celebrate the new year. >> the fireworks fired at the stroke of midnight, from a barge, a thousand yards into the bay off mission street and this is spectacular, and how it looks from the exploritorium camera. the private colors and booms lasted 15 minutes, and some people lined up for hours to stake out the best spot. >> it has been a wonderful year for us. we but the a new house and things are moving along. it has been great. great. great. >> san francisco police were enforcing zero tolerance of drinking in public. officers had extra patrols while

half of what the previous record dry year was. we should get up to 40" or 50 itch in the north bay and some areas received 7". we are starting off cooler this morning, which is the frost and temperatures in the 30's and 40's and we will warm because of the lack of haze in the mid-50 to mid-60's hanging out in the low-to-mid 60's with high clouds and sunshine but not so many high clouds. at 7:00, poor air again, a "spare the air" day with low-to-mid 50's. the next three days, everyone is in the 60's, well above average. kristen? >> thanks, mike, we have traffic to tell you about with a lot of people out partying and as a result we seeing a lot of accidents. in 580 we had a fatality at lake shore avenue and we got word that the sig-alert is canceled with all lanes open.

former president george bush said she is in great spirits and getting fantastic care. that statement also section that mrs. bush has been visited by her husband and family at a hospital in houston. the new year is bringing minimum wage workers in two bay area cities slightly bigger paychecks. the hourly rate if san francisco is up 19 cents from $10.55 to $10.74 an hour and in san jose it is 15 cents but comes months after a bigger raise. our business and technology reporter says the $minimum wage in other parts of the state will soon be history. >> this latest pay raise is a cost-of-living adjustment, a politician in the measure san jose residents approved by 59 percent margin. pay for the minimum wage workers jumped from $8 to $10 last march. anyone working in the city limits for to hour as week gets covered. >> we all know that minimum wage is just that, minimum wage. no one is pretending you can pay

other than the haze because of the air pollution. novato is eighth of a mile visibility and keen on that area of novato up to petaluma on 101 and that is where we have temperatures below freezing and where our thickest fog is with block ice an issue. we are freezing in guerneville and santa rosa and napa and american canyon and san rafael was 41 and bodega bay was 46 and snow valley was 37. across the bay, 42 and 44 in alameda, and 41 in redwood city and cupertino is 38, 34 in san jose, and san ramon, 33 and lafayette, 36. from sutro tower on market street over to the east bay hills, it will be brighter today, and warmer, but it is our 24th "spare the air" day, with clear frost inland as the chilly nights continue, following the near record warm temperatures that are going to extend into the first week of 2014. this is how it looks from the east bay hills, we could see san

francisco this morning something we could not see yesterday. temperatures, today, because of the extra sunshine, are 2 to 7 degrees warmer. it will be noticeable. we have next to oakland, 65 reaching record highs. and redwood city at 66 is near record high and livermore is 67. most of us in the mid-to-upper 60's but the coast is upper 60's. tonight, cold inland lower to upper 30's and mid-40's around half moon bay if san francisco. it will be clear again. three areas of high pressure: they are expanding across the screen and the jet stream is going to the north to the arctic circle taking the cold air to the eastern two-thirds of the country getting the coolest weather so far this season. the dry pattern will hold for at least another week. here is the seven-day forecast: temperatures in the 60's through

out near the airport, are below freezing up to met plume -- on pet plume on 101. we have not heard of any black ice yet. kristen? >> mike, a quick check on traffic because we have fender bender and other more serious accidents. the good news in san jose is 101 northbound ramp to 280 and 680, the section where there was a sig-alert because of an overturn has been canceled and the road is killed and blocking the lanes of the camp -- ramp. there is an emergency vehicle on the scene at 101. fog is a factor there in the roadways in san rafael and how was valley. watch out for that. a camera shot at the oakland maze, traffic is light for commute day but it is a holiday so folks are headed home so be

came the we have a problem in oakland, breaking news the c.h.p. is investigating a fatal accident. in lake shore avenue on-ramp on interstate 580, a sig-alert has been canceled and the on-ramp is back open but it was shut down after 2:30 this afternoon following the fatal accident. investigators say car overturned on the roof trapping a person under the car. new year's begins with a tragedy: in fremont what began as an agent between sisters resulted in one getting killed and a baby seriously injured weapon the vehicle hit the three last night. amy hollyfield is on the scene at paseo padre parkway and mowry. >> this is a major intersection in fremont, paseo padre parkway and mowry. police say they are not in the crosswalk when it happened, the victims were crossing the street on paseo padre parkway. they were hit by a truck driver who is 64-year-old.

a man. three victims. the 17-year-old girl, her 19-year-old sister and the 19-year-old baby boy she was holding. the 19-year-old was killed and the baby was badly injured in the hospital with life threatening injuries. the driver is cooperating and it doesn't look like alcohol is a factor. >> there are no charges. we are still investigating the collision. we need to determine the cause of the collision before we look at that. >> the 17-year-old is in the hospital but is expected to survive. this happened before 10:00 last night on fremont and officers are asking people who saw anything to please give them a call. san francisco police are investigating a tragedy in the street. a little girl is dead and another child and a woman were hurt when a car hit the family in the tenderloin. our reporter, katie marzullo, is at san francisco general. >> i checked with the san

francisco police department and they believe the mother and her four-year-old son are still here being treated at sf general but they are expected to be okay but the citizen-year-old daughter was killed in the accident which happened at 8:00 last night. the throw were actually in a crosswalk, crossing on a green light, and the driver who was in a honda s.u.v. was turning on a green light, as well, when he hit them. police say there is no indication that the driver was drinking or was on drugs but he was arrested and is charged with gross vehicular manslaughter. >> i don't know how far the pedestrian moved from their point of impact but at this point it is a great tragedy. >> a horrible accident. it is the second deadly incident in san francisco yesterday. earlier at 3:30 in the afternoon, a driver hit an 87-year-old man and police were not sure when we last checked if the man, the victim, was in a

crosswalk or the street when he was hit but the driver, there, also stopped and called 9-1-1 and is cooperating with the investigation. that driver, also,s with arrested for gross vehicular manslaughter so we have two death fatal incidents, a little girl killed in one and neither having anything to do with late night celebrations. thank you, katie. oakland police are investigating separate shootings last night minutes apart. a woman was shot in the chest on 22nd avenue after 9:00 p.m. and died at the hospital. it was the 92nd homicide of the year and another shooting at 104th and wallet, a child was shot in the chest and taken to the hospital in critical condition. >> in marin, a person died after the car slid off the road and into the bay. to happened last night, two witnesses pulled a victim from the car and he now is at the

hospital. the other person was trapped in the seatbelt. first responders cut him free but were unable to save his life. officers have not said if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident. people are waking up to the first morning of 2014. if you went to bed early, guess what you missed in san francisco? flies, right? the fireworks lit up the sky at midnight and here is how it looks from the roof camera with thousands lining the embarcadero to celebrate the new year with bright colors and big booms lasting about 15 minutes total. cities around the world welcome the new year with spectacular fireworks and many of the party goers did not seem to mind braving the bitter cold for first-happened look at fallen confetti and dazzling fireworks.

the world rang in 2014 in spectacular fashion. in every corner of the globe dazzling fireworks displays. in australia, a million people gathered for the show over the opera house. in brazil, a big bash in rio de janeiro on the beach. in china, a stunning light show at the great wall and singing crowds. across the united states, frigid temperatures didn't stop the wave of celebrations. in new york, times square was packed to watch the crystal ball job. supreme court justice, sonia sotomayor, a new york native, led the festivities. >> chicago welcomed 2014 and braced for at least 6" of snow. in maine, they briefed the cold for a new year's eve 5-k run and a dip in the ocean. >> great thing to do on new year's eve and you bond with
