san francisco city hall lit up in honor of the 49ers. take on the packers tomorrow in green bay in the wild card playoff round. bound to be an historic game. one of the coldest in history. so cold, some are already calling it the arctic bowl. temperatures could drop below zero. it is going to feel more like 15 below. good evening, thank you for joining us. extremely cold, dense air, descending upon a wide area of the nation from the midwest to the east coast. tonight, the mercury is taking a dive into the danger zone with many places, bracing for subzero temperatures. here is abc news reporter, tai hernandez. >> reporter: a day of digging out. but it is just a brief reprieve

before the next double punch. another potentially heavy snowstorm, followed by a knockout arctic deep freeze. part of the midwest, dodged a bullet this week. won't be as lucky this time around. broadcasters are predicting subzero win chills and coldest weather in decade. the mercury expected to plunge in green bay where the packers and 49ers will play one of the coldest games in history. temperatures hovering around zero. it will feel more like 15. >> the roughly 80,000 fans brave enough to embrace the bitter cold. they will receive free hand warmers, coffee and chocolate. >> for thousand getting home from the holiday has been an unending nightmare. tens of thousand of delays, cancellations at airport across the country since the snow first started. hundred more canceled for sun day. the family left cancun to find their connecting flight to omaha canceled. >> we didn't know any of this was going on. so -- we should have stayed.

going to places hit hard by the snow and ice. at sfo, nine departures were canceled along with five arriving flights. oakland saw one arrival from dulles canceled. none reported at san jose. one passenger whose flight to o'hare airport was nixed, said they're stuck. >> trying to get back to chicago. kids go back to school monday. can't get a flight out till monday. >> all three bay area airports saw lengthy delays, sunny destinations, 30 minutes to three hours. the mother of a brain dead girl is holding on to hope tonight. the family is working to move the 13-year-old out of children's hospital oakland. the clock is ticking. nick smith is live in the newsroom with more. nick? >> stayed in touch with the family and the attorney from the beginning. they're working 'round-the-clock to finalize the necessary steps to move the girl from children's

hospital. the 13-year-old's grandmother, told me, that she is responding to her touch. >> i said hi, she moved her legs and arms. heart is beating good. she is warm. looks beautiful. the best glow i have ever seen. >> you think she understands? >> yes, i do. i know she do. >> the family cleared a hurdle friday. the hospital and family reached an agreement to let a critical care team to transport her to a facility they say is interested in giving her the care sunny needs. and, her uncle said they're making progress. >> we are moving in the right direction. small victory. small victory. leading to the right direction. >> a county superior court jubljubldge ruled the children's hospital can remove her from a

ventilator. her family has not given up. vowing to place her in a facility that will continue her care. >> treat her like the human being. not like a deceased body. >> ape superior court judge owe cape eowe -- a superior court judge okayed the move. three outside doctors, deemed her brain dead. >> the family has not identified a transfer facility or critical care team. willing to move her. the next day, a ct scan, revealed 2/3 of her brain was swollen. on december 11th, she was declared brain dead. fament l the family begin to keep her on a ventilator. an order end tuesday.

and said to be in good spirits. reunited with her family. this man, david allen douglas under arrest. police say he has no connection to the family. he followed them home from a wal-mart store earlier in the day. a good samaritan, spotted douglas and recognized the car from information, broadcast in an amber alert, alerted police. she said being nosy paid off. >> that sccould be your child o niece. so close to you. >> relief for an oakland family after their child disappeared this evening. daryl carter iii nowhere to be found when his mother went to pick him up this afternoon. a search party went block by block, looking for daryl. he was found at a neighbor's house.

>> new at 11:00, san francisco police are investigating a car accident involving a pedestrian in the inner richmond district tonight. a pedestrian was struck by a car at 17th avenue and california street after 9:30. that person was rushed to the hospital. the driver stopped and remained at the scene. two people were injured after another collision between a pedestrian and vehicle in san francisco. a motorcycle hit an elderly pedestrian at the corner of 6 and market streets, just after 3:00. >> 32-year-old alfred jeter sfrum chicafrom chicago. jeter was driving a stolen suv with weapons inside when heap lost control and crashed. he jumped the median into the southbound lanes and was hit by several cars. >> a collision between an
