>> good morning, everyone, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, january 5th. let's start a quick first look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> carolyn, we have a pretty interesting phenomena this morning. live doppler 7hd shows this we are clear, burr the winds are very gusty in the higher elevations so that has allowed dewpoints to drop anywhere from 5 to 15 december from yesterday's readings. as a result, very dry air from the higher elevations being vected down to the valleys. more widespread 30s not the east bay valleys and the winds are gusting to 35 and 40 miles an hour in the north bay.

a little lighter in the east bay but we are looking at very dry air, gusty winds. they will lighten up after sunrise. then we will see temperatures rapidly increase. once again, the possibility of record warmth today. by noontime we are talking upper 60s to near 70 around berkeley and oakland and then a quiet evening. we are talking about the possibility of this rain this week. details on that coming up. >> thank you, lisa. we are fortunate because another round of brutally cold weather is hitting a wide area of the nation from the midwest to the east coast. the mercury is diving into the danger zone with subzero windchill in places like green bay, wisconsin where the 49ers play today. here's abc news reporter tie hernandez. >> it has been a day of digging out. but it's just a brief reprieve before the next double punch. another potentially heavy no storm followed by a knockout arctic deep freeze. parts of the midwest that dodged

a bullet won't be as lucky this time around. forecasters are predicting subzero windchill and some of the coldest weather in decades. the temperatures are expected to plunge in green bay sunday where the nfl will play one of the coldest games in nfl history. >> roughly 80,000 fans brave enough to brave the about ther cold will receive free hand warmsers and hot coffee and chocolate. >> it's been an unending nightmare. tens and thousands of delays since the snow first started and hundreds more already cancelled for sunday. the walker family left cancun friday to find their connecting flight to omaha cancelled. >> we didn't know any of this was going on. we should have stayed. >> there's real deng we're all the extreme weather. more than 16 people have died from weather-related injuries. major cities are trying to get the homeless off the streets and

into shelters and doctors are stressing be careful. high hernandez, abc news, new york. >> because of the extreme weather, thousands of air travelers were affected by delays yesterday with more expected to. yesterday was a rough day to fly, especially if you were coming or going to places hit hard by the snow and ice. at sfo nine departures to these destinations were cancelled, along with five arriving flights. oakland had one arrival from dallas cancelled. one flight was nixed and the woman was stuck. >> returning from a trip to hawaii and are trying to get back to chicago because the kids go back to school monday. we can get a flight out until monday. >> all three bay area airports with lengthy delays even to sunny destinations that afternoon 30 minutes to three hours cause by planes that were out of position. developing news in oakland man

tried to get away from sheriff's deputies was hospitalized a life-threatening injuries. this is how it ended at 68th avenue near mcarthur boulevard late last night. driver had to be cut out of the wreckage of his car after slamming into some parked cars. no one else was injured. the chase began minutes earlier when almeda county sheriff's deputies tried to pull him over. we will update the story as additional details get released this morning by the sheriff's department. the mother of a brain dead girl is still holding out hope this morning. jahi mcmath's family is still working to move her out of the children's hospital in oakland but they have very little time left. the clock is ticking. >> a group of motorcycle riders stopped at children's hospital oakland to lend emotional support to the family of jahi mcmath. the 13-year-old's grandmother said jahi is responding to her

touch. >> i said high jahi and she moved her legs and arms. heart is beating good. and she's looking beautiful. >> do you think she understands what's happening? >> yes, i do. i know she do. >> they cleared a legal hurdle on friday. the hospital and family reached in agreement to let a critical care team transfer to a ventilator provided by the family. this will allow them to transport her to a facility they say is interested in giving her the care she needs. amara, her uncle, said they are moving in the right direction. an almeda county superior court judge said children's hospital oakland can remove her from the ventilator on tuesday at 5:00 p.m. but the family has in the begin up. vow to go place her in a facility that will continue her care. >> that will treat her like the human being that she is and not some deceased body like children's hospital has been calling her. >> the superior judge okayed the

move as long as the mother assumes all responsibility for what happens during the transfer. two hospital figures and three outside doctors deemed jahi brain dead. >> the family has not identified a transfer facility or a critical care team willing to move jahi. abc7 news. >> this all began last month when jahi mcmath underwent surgery on december 9th for a tonsillectomy, and shortly after she went into cardiac arrest. the next day a ct scan said two-thirds of her brain were swollen. december 11th she was declared brain dead. the family then began a legal fight to keep her on the ventilator. the order to keep her on the ventilator ends tuesday at 5:00 p.m.. a girl abducted outside her home friday night is said to be in good spirits after being

reunited with her family. this man, douglas, is under arrest. he followed them home from a wal-mart store earlier in the day day. a good samaritan spotted him and recognized his car from information broad confident in an amber alert. she got attention and she said being nosey paid off. >> that could be your daughter or niece or it could be someone close to you. >> burks honked her car honey to get the attention of a nearby officer. investigators are trying to determine whether the girl was the victim of a vehiclessual acult, which is why we are no longer identifying her. relief for another oakland family after their their son disappeared yesterday for four hours. his mother went to pick him up at the recreation center. a search party went block by block liking for darryl. he was finally found at a

neighbor's house just before 7:00 last night. an arrest has been made in connection with the 2010 killing of a german tourist near san francisco's union square. the u.s. marshals service picked up 21-year-old devonpe laws after he was charged thursday. he's charged with being an accessory to the murder of the man visiting the from germany. they said the victim was caught in the crossfire of two rival gangs. six other suspects have also been arrested and charged with murder. residents in eureka are holding special services today to remember a beloved priest who was murdered new year's day inside the rectory. three vigils will be held today at st. bernard church for reverend eric fried. parishioners are still trying to learn from his killing. >> i think the one thing we will

learn from the father is we have to forgive the man who did it. i'm not there yet. right any i'm angry, i'm really angry. >> the man broke into the rectory and killed the priest on new year's day. the father had ties to the bay area, presiding over a monthly mass in san francisco. break news, an alert in effect on interstate 280. the three left southbound lanes are closed after a fatal accident at page mill road. two left northbound lanes are closed, as well. this happened just after 4:00 this morning. motorists are now advised to expect delays, use alternate routes. there's no estimated time of reopening that roadway. friends an family of a 19-year-old mother who was hit by a pickup truck and killed on new year's eve are collecting donations to pay her funeral costs. ashley was carrying her

three-month-old son in a car seat as she and her sister, her 17-year-old sister, walked home on tuesday night. all three were struck as they tried to dash across the parkway in fremont. the driver is not facing any charges. the baby remains hospitalized in critical condition. as of this morning, the family has raised about $11,000. san francisco police are investigating a car accident involving a pedestrian in the city's enter richmond district. officers tell us a pedestrian was struck by a considerate 17th avenue and california street just after 9:30 last night. that person was rushed to the hospital. the driver did stop and remained at the scene. we now know the name of the man killed on southbound 280 early friday morning. 32-year-old alfred jeter was from chicago. his family tells us he called the bay area home for the past decade. police say jeter was driving a stolen s.u.v. with weapons

inside when he lost control and crashed. he jumped the median into the southbound lanes and was hit by several cars. the investigation continues into a collision between a historic san francisco streetcar and an 18-wheeler. it sent four people in the hospital yesterday. witnesses say the truck turned in front of the streetcar around 12:45 yesterday afternoon. three people on the streetcar, including the operator and the driver of the semi, had minor injuries. lisa argen is here now with a preview of our accuweather forecast. nothing like what's going on elsewhere. >> no, not at all. but we do have very gusty winds out of the east. you can see from our emeryville camera, temperatures in the 50s in oakland but in the low 20s as the air descends, the dry air. we are talking about very dry, windy conditions to start but records this afternoon. we will talk about it when we return.

captured by a sun valley homeowner. it shows a big cat prowling in his yard friday morning before dawn. the animal can be seen crouching down and slowly moving in where the man pet boxer rocky slept. the dog has not been seen since. >> reaction is, wow, it's a very big cat, palms are huge. he weighed about 110, 120 pounds. >> well, just hours earlier a pair of dogs in burbank got into a scrape, likely with the same mountain lion. they suffered scratches and bruises, but are going to be okay. a bobcat was spotted in a populated area of contra costa county last week. the wildlife experts say there's not much danger. it's prowling in the crystal ranch neighborhood in concord. quaker.com posted this picture of the big cat. they aren't especially dangerous except to small animals and in rare cases children. several new laws that began

in january protect california's big cats. hunters are now banned from trapping bobcats near joshua tree national park in southern, california. similar protections will follow at other state? national parks with bobcat limitations. another law limits when and where game ward opens can shoot and kill mountain lions. >> 2014 we made great strides in protecting our environment and in particular focusing on protecting some of the most vulnerable species in california like the bobcats. >> environmentalists say the law changed for bobcats because of the rice in the cost of bobcat penalties from nearly $80 to $800. i have not seen my friend lisa argen in quite a while. open your holidays were great and now it's back to weather. >> it is. back to -- well, for now we have the same old same old. but looks likes things are changing a little bit. a more interesting week ahead

but look at gusty winds this morning. in fact, we are looking at live doppler 7hd where you can see the clear sky. and the reason for that, we have some very gusty winds. yesterday we woke up to the fog. and this morning the winds have been gusting to near 40 miles an hour. where it is breezy and mild in the higher elevations and some of our lower elevations, that air is being transported into the valleys. and with it the dewpoints. 10 to 15 degrees cooler. we are talking about big range of temperatures this morning. in fact from our roof cam it looks nice and still here in san francisco. but look at the temperatures spread on this panel. 52 in san francisco. so that's at least 8 degrees warmer than yesterday. it's 36 in redwood city. 42 los gatos. half moon bay sitting at 55 degrees with the east wind. and from our sutro tower it looks -- you see a little bit of a wind there. take a look at the numbers in the north bay. these valleys where the gusty winds transport that dryer air,

well, it begins to really dry out and as it settles into the napa valley, how about 27 degrees there. 25 in santa rosa with 134 by the delta. look at concord. 51. so where you are experiencing the breezy air and that mixing, it's pretty mild. but down much lower we are looking at those frigid numbers. from our east bay hills camera, you can really see how the wind is blowing out there. but it's not going to last. it will begin to settle right on through the morning hours. that will allow for quick warming today. so sunny conditions. we saw some records yesterday. more records perhaps today with numbers near 70 degrees. then we are looking at temperatures coming down to near average by tuesday through the middle of the week and maybe a couple opportunities for some showers. so with those winds we are warmer this morning and concord at the airport and half moon bay, but look how much cooler from mountain view to santa rosa and napa. so really running the gamut this morning. hilltop winds anywhere from 17

to 35 miles an hour. not only do we have the wide temperature spread, we have very potentially dangerous conditions here with the dry air here, possibility of a few wildfires not out of the question. but as these winds subside, things will get back to what we have been used to. certainly not normal. a few records today. still high pressure in control. an area of low pressure is going to move in and the high will weaken, moving off. by tuesday we are looking at the cloud cover, the cooler temperatures and a very slight chance of showers. in fact, temperatures will come down to near normal tuesday, wednesday, thursday. that just means numbers in the mid-50s to near 60. but look at the rain showers. well up to the north. so just a slight chance. but at least things are indicating that we are getting a little bit back to where we should be come as early as tuesday. high temperatures today upper 60s for santa cruz. look at that 7 to in oakland. 67 fremont. and san francisco warmer than

>> welcome back. we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> carolyn, we have about a 30-degree spread it this morning from the 50s in oakland to the low to mid-20s in the north bay valleys with very gusty winds in the hills of the north bay. they are pretty breezy, 30 to 35 miles an hour and the hills of the east bay. temperatures are warmer for some and much cooler for others. for everyone this afternoon, once again we will see very mild conditions. in fact, we are talking about numbers 10 to 15 degrees above average with perhaps a few records. she are the gusty winds that will continue to subside throughout the morning hours. and then we will be left with unseasonably warm conditions thanks to these offshore winds. but things are going to change. we will see temperatures drop to near normal conditions for much of the midweek. we've got bitterly cold air to talk about, and windchill advisories for the big game today. i will have that forecast in a few minutes. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa.

pope francis is making headlines at the vatican with a warning about future protestors. here is alex. >> in the ten months since he was elected, pope francis has made a name for himself by saying exactly what he thinks. we now learned that the pope warned young priests must be trained properly or otherwise we are creating little monsters and then these little monsters mold the people of god. the pope's frankness has helped drive his favor ability rate to go a sky high 92% for american catholics. he has blasted the again between rich and poor and said you cannot serve the idol of money and the living god at the same time. he recently called unfettered capitalism a new tyranny, rivalling many. the cardinal of new york had to defend the hope.

the founder of home depot said the pope's comments were settling. you want to be careful about generalities. he told dolan, rich people in one country don't act the same as rich people in other countries. >> dolan also says the church's economic view is somewhere in the middle between socialism and what he calls cut-throat capitalism. but it's clear that the hope's efforts to create a church for the poor is leaving some feeling left out in the cold. secretary of state john kerry is headed to jordan and saudi arabia after meeting the palestinian president. carry is trying to broker a deal to create a palestinian state alongside israel. the secretary of state said he is plowing not only through today's issues but through history. >> this is hard work. there are issues, difficult,

a team of bay area doctors and nurses has returned from the philippines after delivering much needed emergency care to victims of typhoon. they are sharing a personal look at that experience through videos and photographs they captured during their mission. here's abc7 news anchor carolyn johnson. >>. >> their houses are gone, their livelihood are gone. we lost our loved ones. >> reporter: for linda, arriving in the philippines was an emotional homecoming. unable to reach her family on the island of laati, she landed with other volunteers from stanford not knowing what to expect. >> i know my sister, her house gone. the children are fine. but minor injuries. there was no food. >> she was part of an emergency response team known by the abc news coname simper. it's made up from volunteers from the hospitals.

including emt brandon bond and the leader collin bucks. they would go to work within hours of landing treating patients in crowded makeshift clinics. >> it's a matter of getting the supplies, getting people directed to the right areas. >> probably at least 400 people waiting. we were very much overwhelmed by the need. >> the ten-member team saw several hundred patience a day, taking just brief breaks to eat, sleep and record some of the images of communities struggling to recover together. >> this is the philippines, especially in times like this, our culture, we help each other. >> it started ringing and i was working on kirk for a wound and the next thing the rain stopped over me and i looked up and there was an individual holding an umbrella over my head inside. that would happen time and time again. >> the team brought much needed medicine and other medical
