>> thank you. another round of brutally cold weather is hitting a wide area of the nation from the midwest to the east coast. the mercury is diving into the danger zone with subzero windchill in places like green bay, wisconsin where the 49ers play today. here's abc news reporter tie hernandez. >> it has been a day of digging out. but it's just a brief reprieve before the next double punch. another potentially heavy snow storm followed by a knockout

arctic deep freeze. parts of the midwest that dodged a bullet won't be as lucky this time around. forecasters are predicting subzero windchill and some of the coldest weather in decades. the temperatures are expected to plunge in green bay sunday where the packers and 49ers will play one of the coldest nfl games in history. temperatures around zero but it will feel like 15 below. >> roughly 80,000 fans brave enough to brave the bitter cold will receive free hand warmers and hot coffee and chocolate. for thousands of airline passengers, getting home from the holiday has been an unending nightmare. tens and thousands of delays and cancellationings around the country since the snow first started and hundreds more already cancelled for sunday. the walker family left cancun friday to find their connecting flight to omaha cancelled. >> we didn't know any of this was going on. we should have stayed. >> there's real danger in all the extreme weather. more than 16 people have died from weather-related injuries. major cities are trying to get the homeless off the streets and into shelters and doctors are stressing be careful.

abc news, new york. >> because of the extreme weather, thousands of air travelers were affected by delays yesterday with more expected to. yesterday was a rough day to fly, especially if you were coming or going to places hit hard by the snow and ice. at sfo nine departures to these destinations were cancelled, along with five arriving flights. oakland saw one arrival from dallas cancelled. one flight was nixed and the woman was stuck. >> returning from a trip to hawaii and are trying to get back to chicago because the kids go back to school monday. we can't get a flight out until monday. >> other than the cancellations, all three bay area airports with lengthy delays even to sunny

destinations that afternoon 30 minutes to three hours caused by planes that were out of position. a plane skidded off the runway and into the snow at kennedy airport in new york this morning. so far no reports injuries. >> and an alert for interstate 280 in the hills. two northbound lanes are closed after a fatal accident involving two cars south of page mill road. it happened just after 4:00 this morning. all southbound lanes reopened about an hour ago. >> developing news in oakland a man who tried to get away from sheriff's deputies is hospitalized this morning. this is how is where it end the at 68th avalanche and mcarthur boulevard late last night. driver had to be cut out of the car after slamming into park cars. nobles was injured. chase again minutes earlier when almeda county sheriffs deputies tried to pull that man over. we will update the story as we get additional details from the

sheriff's department later this morning. the mother of a brain dead girl is still holding out hope this morning. jahi mcmath's family is still working to move the 13-year-old out of the children's hospital in oakland but they have very little time left. the clock is ticking. >> a group of motorcycle riders stopped at children's hospital oakland to lend emotional support to the family of jahi mcmath. the 13-year-old's grandmother said jahi is responding to her touch. >> i said, hey, jahi, and she moved her legs and arms. heart is beating good. and she's looking beautiful. this is the best glow i've seen her half. >> do you think she understands what's happening? >> yes, i do. i know she do. >> they cleared a legal hurdle on friday. the hospital and family reached in agreement to let a critical care team transfer to a ventilator provided by the family. this will allow them to transport her to a facility they say is interested in giving her the care she needs.

amari, her uncle, said they are make progress. >> we are moving in the right direction. we've had small victory after small victory and it's leading in the right direction. >> an almeda county superior court judge said children's hospital oakland can remove her from the ventilator on tuesday at 5:00 p.m. but the family has not given up, vowing to place her in a facility that will continue her care. >> that will treat her like the human being that she is and not some deceased body like children's hospital has been calling her. >> the superior judge okayed the move as long as the mother assumes all responsibility for what happens during the transfer. two hospital physicians and three outside doctors deemed jahi brain dead. >> the family has not identified a transfer facility or a critical care team willing to move jahi. in the newsroom, nick smith, abc7 news. >> this all began last month when jahi mcmath underwent surgery at children's hospital on december 9th and shortly

after went into cardiac arrest. a ct scan showed two-thirds of her brin was swollen. december 11th she was declared brain dead. the family then began a legal fight to keep her on the ventilator. the order to keep her on the ventilator ends tuesday at 5:00 p.m. >> a seven-year-old girl that was abducted outside her home friday night is said to be in good spirits after being reunited with her family. this man, david allen douglas, is under arrest. police say he has no connection to the family. they say he followed them home from a wal-mart store earlier in the day day. a good samaritan who spotted douglas and recognized him from an amber alert, recognized his car, got attention and she said being nosey paid off. >> that could be your daughter

or niece or it could be someone close to you. >> burks honked her car honey to get the attention of a nearby officer. investigators are trying to determine whether the girl was the victim of a sexual assault, which is why we are no longer identifying her. relief for another oakland family after their son disappeared yesterday for four hours. that was yesterday. five-year-old darryl carter iii was nowhere to be found around 3:00 p.m. when his mother went to pick him up at the recreation center. a search party went block by block looking for darryl. he was finally found at a neighbor's house just before 7:00 last night. an arrest has been made in connection with the 2010 killing of a german tourist near san francisco's union square. the u.s. marshals service picked up 21-year-old devonte laws after he was charged thursday. he's charged with being an accessory to the murder of the man visiting the from germany. they said the victim was caught in the crossfire of two rival gangs. six other suspects have also been arrested and charged with murder.

residents in eureka are holding special services today to remember a beloved priest who was murdered new year's day inside the rectory. three vigils will be held today at st. bernard church for reverend eric fried. parishioners are still trying to cope with his killing. >> i think the one thing we will learned from father eric, and it is not going to be easy, is we have to forgive the man who did it. i'm not there yet. right any i'm angry, i'm really angry. >> the man broke into the rectory and killed the priest on new year's day. the father had ties to the bay area, presiding over a monthly mass in san francisco. >> friends and family of a 19-year-old mother hit by a pickup truck and killed on new year's eve are clerking donations to pay her funeral costs. ashley was considering her three-month-old son in a car

seat as she and her sister, 17-year-old sister, walk home on tuesday night. all three were struck as they tried to dash across the parkway in fremont. the driver is not facing any charges. the baby remains hospitalized in critical condition. as of this morning, the family has raised about $11,000. lisa argen is here now talking about maybe a chance of rain somewhere down the line? >> maybe. can't it will "m." but dryer air is pushing into the bay area. you can see the camera shaking here. 25 to 35 miles an hour winds, really allowing for some low relative humidity and sub freezing temperatures in the north by. we will talk about near record highs today when we return. >> thank you, lisa. also ahead, we are remembering a legend. the oscar-winning produce who are helped create a movie empire right here in the bay area.

song was dance, zaents, dance, a reference to the singer between him and sing he fogerty. abc7 news. a major rescue operation is unfolding in ant antarctica. the u.s. coast guard polar star is on its way to rescue two chips after they went to rescue an expedition ship with 74 passengers on board. they have already been airlifted to safety. the ship called for help when they became ice bound. >> a different sort of rescue for the amazon founder jeff bazos. he suffered a painful kidney stone attack on new year's day while on a cruise. a military helicopter from the ecuadorian navy flu him where he could board his private jet back to the u.s. for emergency treatment.

he weighed about 110, 120 pounds. >> well, just hours earlier a pair of dogs in burbank got into a scrape, likely with the same mountain lion. they suffered scratches and bruises, but are going to be okay. a bobcat was spotted in a populated area of contra costa county last week. the wildlife experts say there's not much danger. it's prowling in the crystal ranch neighborhood in concord. quaker.com posted this picture of the big cat. they aren't especially dangerous except to small animals and in rare cases children. several new laws that began in january protect california's big cats. hunters are now banned from trapping bobcats near joshua tree national park in southern, california. similar protections will follow at other state and national parks with bobcat limitations.

another law limits when and where game wardens can shoot and kill mountain lions. >> 2014 we made great strides in protecting our environment and in particular focusing on protecting some of the most vulnerable species in california like the bobcats. >> environmentalists say the law changed for bobcats because of the rise in the cost of bobcat pelts from $80 to nearly $800. >> the air temperature hovering above zero in green bay. you have heard all this but we are talking about the bitterly and dangerous cold. her we sit in this very, very dry air mass. it is dryer than yesterday. gusty, offshore winds have allowed the dewpoints to drop 10 to 15 degrees. that means the air temperature where that wind is blog and drying out the air, it is settling into the north bay. we have mid-20s.

contrast that to mid-50ths here, san francisco and oakland. so it is kind of a wild morning out there with 25 to 35 miles an hour wind gusts. san francisco 52. it is 57 already in half moon bay. these winds will subside. but we are looking at a 25 to 30-degree spread this morning due to those gusty winds. 35 right any in redwood city, 37 in san jose and fire danger is high. we've had no rain, you know that. and then with lowering dewpoints and gusty offshore winds, we are talking about a morning where it is freezing cold and the air mass is holding pretty much no moisture at all. 32 novato, 25 santa rosa, 38 by the delta and the numbers kept up in concord while they are dropping down the road in livermore. but the good news is by about midmorning the winds subside. we will still be try but we will see less gusty winds. the relative humidity, our recovery, won't be much.

are we looking at rain? a possibility. but look how breezy it is out there on the east bay hills camera. the north and east bay hills. sunny and mild. temperatures once again well above average, near record warmth and cooler this week, mid-50s to 60s. a couple weather systems getting awfully close and may be giving us a spritz here or there. 10 degrees warmer concord. oakland is 9 degrees warmer. but santa rosa napa, five degrees warmer. here are the wind gusts in the upper televisions and even around mantodea ab below, 30 to 35 miles an hour winds. keep this in mind if you are headed out this morning. high pressure, it hasn't moved much. in fact we are look at another day today where temperatures could climb to near 70 degrees. we saw widespread 70s along the practical coast yesterday. close to that around the bay. and today the changes, we have the wind this morning, increasing clouds tomorrow, and into tuesday and them look where

>> we have some breaking news right now. we are just getting a little more information about the plane that skidded off the runway into the snow this morning at kennedy airport. we are now being told that the airport is closed, expected to

reopen possibly at 11:30 this morning their time. ginger zee, abc meteorologist, said letter really icy conditions there. in terms of this plane skidding, there are no reports of any injuries. the faa is now investigating. again, the airport has been closed. we do not know how many people were on that plane. the faa says it was exiting the runway on to a taxi way when it slid into the snow. so we know that conditions are definitely treacherous with all the snow and ice back east. we are joined now to tell us what is coming up at 7:00 on "good morning america." i'm sure the weather is on tap. >> good morning. coming up on gma, frozen nation. temperatures are subzero and now a new snowstorm is on its way. where will the storm hit next? how do you survive the bitter cold? also it's the playoff game in

allowing for temperatures to drop into the 20s in some spots. but while we have cold numbers in the valleys, look at half moon bay. 57 degrees. 52 in the city. it's 35 in redwood city. the view from mt. tam you can see the camera shaking here, as well. the gusty winds will be with us throughout the morning hours. look at the mid-20s, santa rosa, napa. 32 novato and 36 livermore. the offshore winds keeping the atmosphere dry as a bone, and we will look for those to lighten up throughout the day today. but with that mixing of the warmer air above, down to the surface, we are looking at rapid warming today. near record warmth. perhaps 70s around the bay and getting closer to normal in the next few days. i'll explain coming up. >> lisa, thank you. pope francis is making headlines at the vatican with a warning about future priests. here is is abc news reporter, alex marquart. >> reporter: in the ten months

since he was elected, pope francis has made a name for himself by saying exactly what he thinks. we now learned that the pope warned young priests must be trained properly or otherwise, quote, we are creating little monsters and then these little monsters mold the people of god. the pope's frankness has helped drive his favorability rating to a sky high 92% for american catholics. he has blasted the gap between rich and poor and said you cannot serve the idol of money and the living god at the same time. he recently called unfettered capitalism a new tyranny, riling many. the cardinal of new york had to defend the hope. and the ceo and founder of home depot said the pope's comments were settling. you want to be careful about generalities. he told dolan, rich people in one country don't act the same as rich people in other countries. >> the pope loves poor people,

he also loves rich people. he loves people. >> alex marquart reporting. dolan also says the church's economic view is somewhere in the middle between socialism and what he calls cut-throat capitalism. but it's clear that the pope's efforts to create a church for the poor is leaving some feeling left out in the cold. secretary of state john kerry is headed to jordan and saudi arabia after meeting the palestinian president. kerry is trying to broker a deal to create a palestinian state alongside israel. the secretary of state said he is plowing not only through today's issues but through history. >> this is hard work. there are issues, difficult, complicated, years of mistrust of that been built up. all of which have to be worked through and undone. >> kerry said both the president

isreali prime minister benjamin netanyahu are working with serious purpose to solve the problem. >> another entertainer is thinking about moving into politics. the martial arts star stephen seagal is thinking about running for governor of arizona. he has never held political office, stars as a law man in his own reality series based out of arizona. new york it joining the march to legalize medical marijuana. according to the new york times, the governor andrew cuomo will unveil an initiative this week during his state of the state speech. it will allow a limited number of hospitals to dispense marijuana or certain ailments. his action will make new york the 21st state to allow medical use of marijuana. a team of bay area doctors and nurses has returned from the philippines after delivering much needed emergency care to victims of typhoon. they are sharing a personal look at that experience through videos and photographs they captured during their mission.

here's abc7 news anchor carolyn johnson. >> their houses are gone, their livelihood are gone. we lost our loved ones. >> reporter: for nurse linda, arriving in the philippines was an emotional homecoming. unable to reach her family on the island of laati, she landed with other volunteers from stanford not knowing what to expect. >> i know my sister, her house gone. the children are fine. but minor injuries. there were no food. >> she was part of an emergency response team known by the acronym semper. it's made up from volunteers from stanford and area hospitals. including emt brandon bond and the leader collin bucks. they would go to work within hours of landing treating patients in crowded makeshift clinics. >> it's a matter of getting the supplies, getting people directed to the right areas.

>> there were probably at least 400 people waiting. we were very much overwhelmed by the need. >> the ten-member team saw several hundred patients a day, taking just brief breaks to eat, sleep and record some of the images of communities struggling to recover together. >> this is the culture of the philippines, especially in times like this, we help each other. >> it started raining and i was working on caring for a wound, and the next thing the rain stopped over me and i looked up and there was an individual holding an umbrella over my head inside. that would happen time and time again. >> the team brought much needed medicine and other medical supplies from the bay area. >> and we would prioritize the patients by five and younger and then 65 and older. >> behind it almost looks like a hillside of patients. >> a moment i have to catch

myself, i'm here as a nurse. i'm here to help, but then there's part of me i'm here because i'm one of you. i wish i could do more. >> but from the suffering emerged an amazing story of resilience. especially among the thousand throngs of families and kids. at least 75 kids. so i took the group away from the medical clinic and started a game of duck duck goose. >> there's images of children flying a kite. it was right outside the clinic. these three little boys, a very homemade fashioned kite, running down the street in between the cars, just loving life. and in the middle after disaster -- of a disaster zone to see the children still just enjoying life and that was an amazing image. >> carolyn johnson, abc7 news. and carolyn says the acronym semper is short for the stanford emergency medicine program for

emergency response. we have more information on their work on abc7news.com under "see it on tv." if you signed up for health insurance open the state website, covered california, you are getting an extension of when you have to pay. all 11 companies that provided insurance in the california. market have agreed to extend the deadline for your first month's premiums by nine days. this means you now have until january 15th to get that first payment to them. the state has been getting complaints from consumers who feel rushed to pay for invoices they just recently received. the extension also gives the insurance companies extra time to mail out those bills. people who want to preserve open space plan to protest the planned expansion of the oakland zoo today. the zoo is taking steps to expand facilities into nolan park with the 34,000 square foot visitor center and a gondula

both jfk and laguardia airport are closed due to icy conditions. both are expected to reopen at 11:00 a.m. eastern time. it follows a plane skidding off the runway and into the snow this morning at jfk airport. so far no reports any injuries. that plane was a delta connection 4100. the faa says as the plane was exiting the runway on to a taxi way, it slid into the snow. this happened around 8:00 their time. the flight flown by endeavor air originated in toronto. again, both new york airports have been closed. lisa, that is certain to have a ripple effect on the airports here. what are the conditions like, other than icy and snowy? >> it's a mix right now. the temperature is 30 degrees. they have light freezing rain. it couldn't be worse. and the south wind at 7 miles an hour. the temperature will increase throughout the day. it will be all rain by the afternoon with a high of 44 in the northeast. but back home we have the

live doppler 7 hd, nice and clear this morning. we have the fog yesterday. no chance of that forming with the dry air mass. when the east bay hills camera the winds are beginning to subside in some areas. but take a look at the numbers here. from 52 in san francisco, 37 in son hose. good morning redwood city. it's been chilly on the peninsula. and we are nearly 60 degrees in-moon bay. but take a look at this panel from mt. tam. you see the camera shaking. how about 25 in santa rosa? 27 in napa with 32 novato and 30s in the livermore valley where really close by in concord you are 11 degrees warmer. so that's where the gusty northeast winds will do. and as they are transported downward another 1200 feet. that's where we get the chill and the temperatures bottoming out. winds will continue to subside throughout the morning hours. we will be left with a very dry

afternoon. you can see the flag from the roof camera. clear and breezy in the hills. sunny and mild today. cooler the week ahead. we have a couple opportunities for rain and we will look for the chance of showers better for the wednesday-thursday time period than for tuesday. 10 degrees warmer in concord and seven degrees colder santa rosa, napa, and colder in mountain view. look at the coast. very balmy at almost 7:00 this morning. high pressure continues to be our dominant weather feature as the jet stream rides way over that. and with the down sloping winds, it will allow temperatures to reach about 70 degrees today for parts of our east bay. so this is as much as 15 degrees above average again. but here's a look at the best chance of showers. we are fast forwarding to wednesday. notice it's well to the north but this is going to hold together. as it begins to slide south, we will get some slight snow in the sierra nevada. then by thursday, look it, it is

heading down into central colorado so maybe a few drops. we are talking about bitter cold across the nation's midsection. we are seeing snow in st. louis and chicago and 25 to 35 degrees windchill factors. here's st. louis with 2 to 4 inches of rain and snow. this morning we are look agent 10 inches of snow tonight and windchill factors below zero. very cold all the way down to texas and, in fact, these are high temperatures tomorrow. 12 below in chicago with 50s and rain in the northeast. we talked about the rain-snow mix in new york city right now. here's a look at the game today with temperatures in the single digits. if your skin is exposed for about ten minutes, it will freeze on contact. it is going to be just an awful day there. 70 in oakland, 69 san jose. 65 in antioch and the 7 day forecast cooler, increasing clouds tomorrow. a slight chance of showers on tuesday. the better chance comes in
