accident involving a pedestrian. it is just the latest in a deadly few weeks in san francisco. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm carolyn johnson. abc7 news reporter nick smith is live near city hall at van ness and grove where this all happened. >> take a look over my shoulder. you can see there are seven lanes of traffic. police tell me a man was crossing this busy section of van ness avenue when he was struck and killed by a driver that had no time to react. this was the scene of an accident of a man crossing van ness after 7:00 p.m. san francisco police with the collision investigation unit tell abc news the victim was a 38-year-old man. witnesses told investigators the vehicle tim had been in some sort of verbal

altercation with another man earlier. but police tell us they do not believe that played a role in the victim's death. what they do know is that the victim started on the west side of van ness avenue and attempted to cross the busy street at least twice before stoping on the center median. >> when trying to go from the center median to the eastside they made it across two lanes and then was struck in the far right hand lane. >> the victim was hit by only one vehicle. this late model honda. police tell us the driver remained on the scene and is cooperating with investigators. this is the 6th fatal ped vein accident since december 19th. police tell us the driver of the honda was a woman in her 20s and neither drugs nor alcohol were a factor. the san francisco board of supervisors is holding a joint meeting between the safety committee and neighborhood watch to talk about pedestrian safety. in san francisco, nick smith, abc7 news. >> nick, thank you.

a family hopes an increased reward will help find the person who killed a man in oakland right after he graduated from college. 22-year-old nacana was fatal she shot at stanford and market. someone from the other car got out and opened fire. he has raised $100,000 for a reward to find his killer. the message can be seen on billboards and bus benches and ac transit buses. we spoke with his mother tonight. >> i really believe somebody out there knows something of the -- something. i think i mentioned this before. money is a powerful incentive. but i believe it is not just about the money. >> police did capture a picture of the shooter's car from traffic cameras. detectives plan to reveal that photo tomorrow. we'll show it to you. the flu has taken five lives in california. the latest in contra costa

county. police are releasing few details about the 48-year-old, but she had underling health issues. all of the deaths have been in northern california from the h1n1 strain known as swine through. three in sacramento county and another woman in santa clara county and all under the age of 65. another 18 people have developed severe cases of the flu in contra costa county. >> the flu can be severe. it is more severe for people with underling medical conditions, but it is can be severe for healthy adults as well. >> doctors offer two simple suggestions to protect you and your family from the flu. one, get a flu shot. this year's vaccine offers protection from h1n1. and two, wash your hands frequently to stop the spread of the flu and other diseases such as the common cold. relief is on the way tomorrow for dozens of states enduring the historic arctic blast. the severe weather is blamed for 21 deaths nationwide since sunday. it brought record-setting cold

temperatures to the east and the deep south. it made dangerous situations even more treacherous for firefighters and police. many schools were closed and the roads were off lem mitts. were off limits. 500 amtrak passengers are glad to be at their destination. they were stranded in snow drifts for 14 hours on three trains including the california zephyr from san francisco. passengers arrived to their destination of chicago today by bus. and airline passengers are still stranded after the polar freeze resulted in the cancellation of more than 3,000 flights around the country. the worst day for bay area airports was yesterday. a baggage back up remains at sfo. look at this mess. getting everything back on track is expected to take a few more days still. heavy delays and cancellations continue in several cities including new york, pittsburgh and detroit. >> meteorologist sand yaw patel is tracking -- sandhya patel is tracking this polar

alan wang traveled to santa rosa where they are using a drought proof method to feed the horses. >> folsom lake is near 18% of its capacity and water managers across the state are calling on the governor to officially declare a drought. >> i can tell you right now all of the indications are telling us that we are headed into a possible year that is even worse than 1977. >> no rain and no grass. it is hurting the agriculture industry from cattle ranchers to horse owners. they own the santa rosa equestrian center. >> when we purchased the property we were paying $9 a bail. >> so underwood began growing her own drought proof feed for the more than 100 horses at her stable. >> each tray will be a biscuit as it is called. >> barley seeds are germinated in this temperature and like controlled locker for six days until they become lush

knockout game attack. maybe you heard of this. a man punched a woman in the parking lot of a strip mall and took off running. the woman was not seriously injured and the only motive police have come up with is that she was sucker punched possibly as a part of the dangerous game called knockout. >> the man charged with kidnapping a 7-year-old girl in antioch is admitting to the crime and offering a bizarre explanation. david alan douglas talked about what happened on friday. he says the little girl willingly went with him and he has no intention of harming her. he said taking the child was not his idea, but arranged as part of a government conspiracy and he did it as a plea for help. >> i sincerely apologize, but i am trying to escape this thing. that's the only reason i would do that. >> douglas says he has a son who is the same age. he says he has been living in his car at the antioch marina

venezuela monica spear was murdered alongside her husband. the 29-year-old and her husband irish man thomas berry were found shot to death in

their vehicle after resisting robbers. her 5-year-old daughter was shot in the leg. these are pictures from the scene. spear's father says they are now struggling to cope. >> there is no words to describe the pain. this is something that should have never happened. >> spear lived in miami and was on vacation in venezuela. she had said in the past she left her home country because it was too dangerous. fans turned out to meet one of the 49er playoff heros. bowman was signing autographs in burlingame. john alston was there for the excitement. >> it is one thing to see the 49er plays ball in a stadium and another to grab a quick chat. and the fans devoured the chance to meet bowman. >> amazing. really appreciate it. it is something different.
