good evening and thanks for joining us. when a plane engine fails, there's no time for questions about how or why. minutes, even seconds, can mean the difference between life and death. you're about to see an amazing video of what it was like for the nine passengers onboard a tiny plane headed to honolulu just a few weeks ago when an emergency landing on the water led to a race to get out alive. here's abc's david wright. >> reporter: two minutes after takeoff, a sudden loss of power. the engines of this cessna grand

caravan, a puddle jumper headed to honolulu inexplicably stopped. >> the engine just made a sound and then it just happened, you know? you realized at that moment what was going on. >> reporter: all nine people onboard know they're about to crash. but listen, not a peep from the passengers. >> there was no screaming, no one panicked. >> reporter: ferdinand in seat 4 b was rolling the whole time. i was thinking is this, like, for real? >> reporter: the only sound, a cockpit alarm. >> i looked out the window and seen the ocean was coming pretty fast. we just hit and that split second, the first thing i did was look for my life vest. life jacket. i was there fumbling, trying to get it open. it happened so fast.

>> reporter: watch as the floor immediately starts to fill up with water. >> water just filled our feet up to the ankles. >> the camera is inside a water mount which is meant for snorkeling, which turns out to be just the right thing. the camera still rolling as everyone makes their escape. 3:24, less than two minutes after the crash, they're all out. >> everybody okay? >> reporter: miraculously all nine people onboard survived the crash itself. >> the wing was right there. i figured everyone was rushing as fast as i did. i just kept going on up to the end of the wing and making sure there was room for the other passengers. >> reporter: once in the water, puentes and the others grabbed

for any piece of debris they could find. >> the first person behind me cried for help because she didn't have that life vest on. >> reporter: that passenger from 3a was struggling. >> the pilot was trying to get everyone together, but that was kind of impossible because of the waves. >> reporter: still, everyone was remarkably calm. >> i was like in shock, this is happening still? when am i going to wake up. >> reporter: he managed to capture this epic selfie before his battery ran out of cameras. >> time stopped and everyone you remember in your past, loved ones and everything, i didn't say goodbye to them. you know, it just for even that split nano second time stopped and your whole life just goes in front of you. >> reporter: the plane itself stayed afloat for another 25 minutes. >> let's go, head to shore.

>> reporter: the panels stranded in the water for another hour after that. one of them actually swam back to shore, hoping to signal for help. by that time, the rescuers had final lly arrived. >> the helicopter came by and was headed to my direction with a rescue swimmer and cargo net. he just came within a few feet of me, extended out his hand and he just pulled me in. because i was exhausted. >> for all but one of the nine people onboard, this was a near death experience. one passenger wasn't so lucky. she survived the crash but struggled to tread water. >> she was paddling with her feet. she wasn't exactly relaxed. at some stage, she had let go his hand. probably had it gripped tightly. she let go his hand and he tried

to see if he could get a response from her, but there was no response. >> reporter: in 2011, she found herself at the center in the jo uproar over president obama's birth certificate. the fact that she was the lone fatality briefly became fodder for conspiracy theorists, but this new video may go a long way towards putting that to rest. in fact, what makes this case so unusual is the fact that ferdinand puentes captured the crash on camera, as well as the aftermath. survival experts say they did everything right. most importantly, they stayed calm. they followed the safety procedures. everyone wearing a seat belt, everyone grabbing a life vest on the way out. and they clearly knew where the exits were. those simple procedures are how the overwhelming majority, upwards of 90% managed to survive plane crashes. even on jumbo jets like the

asiana flight that crashed at sfo last year. or the us airways shuttle that landed on the hudson river five years ago. the miracle on the hudson, they called it. in that flight, as in this one, the survival rate owed a lot to the skills of the pilot and the steady nerves of the passengers. >> i had this running on the go pro stick. i held on to it. >> he said he had his camera ready because he wanted to document his trip to the island. >> so i took a picture of us landing there. and i was going to make a story. so i figured, you know, i'll take the video of us taking off also. so just as i took the video and we were taking off, just as soon as i turn off the camera, within a couple of seconds, a few seconds, that noise of the plane's engine just happened. so i turned it back on and made sure it was on and just kept on rolling.

an ebulient american with a business degree. he starts rapping in fluent portuguese. ♪ this is don blankito. a name that roughly translates into sir white boy. he has followed a wild, gutsy past from an affluent american upbringing to becoming one of the biggest figures in the roughest music scenes on earth. alex cutler was raised by a doctor dad and a stay at home mom. he also had a nanny who taught him how to speak fluent spanish. he attended a posh boarding school then went off to get his degree. at one point during his travels, he met a cute girl in the miami airport who told him she was from brazil. so he came to rio looking for others like her. >> just a crazy bend of this hot blood, you know?

that's why the chicks are so hot. >> while pursuing a certain variety of female companionship, he fell in love with the city itself. >> she got a gringo for a cell. >> there were no police. it's crazy. >> he moved into what's called a favella. one of scores of shanty towns that dot this city, run by violent drug lords. here on the streets, he learned how to speak portuguese. >> what do your parents think? >> [ bleep ] it's totally left field. but it is what it is. >> have your parents come to your home? >> my mom came here and visited me. we went into a pharmacy on the corner and the [ bleep ] pharmacy got held up literally with my mom in it. you've got to be kidding me. >> reporter: but cutler adored the people who lived in rio and he also adored their distinctive art form, funk music. don't be confuseded here, brazilian funk bares zero

resemblance to the american version. ♪ >> reporter: it is a genre born and bred in these lawless flavellas. >> think of that jumbo drum as what's going on in the chest of everyone walking through this urban jungle. >> reporter: much of it glorifies violence and drugs. some of the songs are even banned by the government here. funk shows were originally hosted by the gangs themselves as an excuse to party and to sell drugs. and they have been known to turn very violent. >> when there was, you know, hard core drug trafficking and hard core violence, it was a cry. you know, it was a cry out. usually either promoting the drug traffickers or a cry against it in talking about, you know, life is a struggle, life is harsh. but now things are getting better. there's a middle class booming. the economy is getting better.

>> that's cheesy. more like the eminem of funk. >> reporter: he has managed to hustle his way up a very tough ladd ladder, performing at shows where shots have been fired. the first time you got on stage in front of a crowd of -- >> it was like 8 mile, but it was in portuguese. 3,000 black dudes looking at me. my portuguese was [ bleep ] up. but you just do it. i've done hundreds of shows and i still get that, you know, that adrenaline rush. that's the beauty of it. there's no drugs involved, no alcohol. it's a pure rush. and you're commanding the stage. ♪ rio rio rio ♪ i love you so much. i can't lie ♪ >> my checking account definitely does not compare to some of my friends that wept into real estate, goldman, and at the end of the day, they have

empty souls. one life to live, one life to live, you know what i mean? >> reporter: as much unlikely success as he's had, he still cannot make a living through funk, so cutler has a day job for an american company that produces corporate events. and as much as he likes rapping up a the ladies, he is no longer single. he's married to a brazilian woman who's about to have their first child. ♪ it's something real special growing up in l.a. ♪ >> still he nurses dreams of bringing funk to america. >> i think it's very aggressive for the u.s. culture to accept or embrace. i think there needs to be a more subtle intro to the u.s. some kind of a lubrication, like a ky to ease it in. >> reporter: so you're the ky? >> isle be don ky. >> reporter: when you know gets the sense that whether he becomes a big star or not, don blankito is very happy with what he's achieved.
