mainly north of the golden gate. but you could see some in almeda or berkeley. and temperatures throughout the afternoon cool we're the clouds. upper 50s to near 60s. we return to mild records and i'll have the forecast for you coming up with the accuweather seven-day forecast in a few minutes. breaking news. former prime minister ariel sharon has died. the announcement was made today his family has been by his side in recent weeks. as you know, he has been in a coma for nearly eight years since suffering a stroke in 2006. he was the mastermind behind the invasion of lebanon in 1982 and the withdrawal from the gaza strip. for decades he played a giant role in israel's military affairs and both loved and loathed for his ways. he was 85 years old. also developing news here in

the bay area this morning. the chp is investigating a hit-and-run after a body was found on the san jose freeway on-ramp. the person was found on the jackson on-ramp on the interstate 68. the name is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin. the ramp reopened just before 2:30 this morning. and on the peninsula investigators are looking into the palo alto house fire. the bodies of two people were found inside the home. this morning the task force is expected to join the medical examiner's investigation which is on embarcadero road. firefighters discovered the bodies inside the home as they were putting out a one-alarm fire last night. abc news reporter ama daetz as the story. >> palo alto fire got home to find the home on embarcadero home fully engulfed. two bodies were found inside. the investigation into the deaths will be handled by the police, fire and santa clara county task force.

>> anytime there's a fatality at the fire scene, we will put up a crime scene until we are able to determine what happened, if the fire is criminal in nature or not. it is a routine investigatory step. it happens at every fire when we discover a body. >> a neighbor said a man and caretaker lived in that home. >> johnny was a vietnam war vet. he's been pretty sick. i haven't seen him for a while. >> firefighters had trouble putting out the fire because there were a lot of items inside the home-like newspapers and boxes. >> we had a hard time kind of getting in and where we needed to go. the home was apparently in fairly poor condition before the fire began so the fire just enhanced it and made it worse. >> the investigation will really get underway when there is daylight to help them. ama daetz, abc7 news. >> in walnut creek officials are investigating the cause of a fatal house fire. contra costa county fire

officials said flames were spotted coming from the home around 9:45 last night. firefighters arrived to find the second floor burning and tried to rescue the victim trapped on the second floor, but the fire was too intense. the name was not been released. san jose said an arsonist may be at work inside their city. right now they are battling a house fire. that is right in the area where a string of fires have been set since wednesday. we are talking about seven other suspicious fires of that broken out over the past few days within about a two-mile radius. sky 7hd was over the neighborhood of 24th and east san antonio streets yesterday morning after three fires broke out in a span of just an hour. one area homeowner said she's concerned about the possible arsonist targeting the neighborhood. >> i didn't realize it was going on around the whole neighborhood and i am very worried about my renters. >> residents are being urged to be vigilant.

the wreckage of a plane carrying five people, including a silicon valley tech executive, has been found in idaho six weeks after it disappeared from radar. there were no survivors. 51-year-old dale smith was piloting the plane when it was last seen on december 1st. the family was heading from oregon to montana when smith reported engine trouble about 150 miles northeast of boise. authorities suspended the search in mid-november, but family and friends continued with a private search. in a facebook post his wife, janice, thanks searchers and said the plane was found just before the search had to wrap up for the foreseeable future. a storm is moving into the area so the plane will not be recovered until the weather clears. there are now 11 deaths from the flu. that's in the bay area. as the virus spreads, more people are scrambling to get a flu shot and right now that can be a challenge. walgreens and kaiser permanente

both report being short on shots, but only temporarily. >> at the direct urgent care clinic in berkeley they are down to their last vial. >> there's some left, but it's low. >> people are looking to get flu shots. >> we had a bet of a run on it. we do have some available, but we will probably run out soon and have to order more. >> healthcare providers across the bay area are seeing a surge of people looking for shots after a continued reports of deaths. almeda county health officials have confirmed two more fatalities, and setting a dangerous pace for the flu season. >> it determines the baseline flu and the epidemic threshold, and looks like we are heading above our average and similar to last year. >> the good news is there is plenty of vaccine available this year, so health officials are hoping to head off further infections by encouraging people to get vaccinated. >> there are a lot of different kinds of vaccines whether you

are two years old or 50 years of age, or people can get a spray in their nose. it's easy and safe. >> even the oakland diocese are encouraging people to reach out to their parishioners this weekend. >> we are discussing how to respect each other's space and not reach out with a handshake or hug. in prayer they will be asked to hold their hands up instead of linking them. and in berkeley people will find something extra at their seats. >> one person came in a few days ago with three boxes of hand sanitizers. we will put in all the pews. so far 11 flu cases have been reported in the area. >> one bay area victim is a young man, just 23 years old. mattie walker posted this picture of himself after christmas. he was sick for two weeks and died on wednesday. family and friends say walker was a great guy and they are still in shock over his death. >> he was young. he was healthy. this is why it's such a shock. >> he went into the hospital and it was all good and then he came out and then he went back in again and all of a sudden

everything went bad within a day. >> his father tells abc7 news that his son did not get a flu shot this year. he was one of ten severe flu cases in sonoma county this season. so far he's the only fatality. >> state health officials confirm the flu is trending up earlier than usual this year and it's spreading rapidly. here's a map of what the activities around the country looked like two weeks ago and here is what is looks like now. california is highlighted in red, indicating widespread flu activity throughout the state. flu season typically peaks in february or march, but health officials say they are already noticing it. >> people get sick pretty quickly and people having reported to actually go from being healthy to having the flu to being in the hospital within two days. >> the majority of those who have died from the flu had the h1n1 strain.

all the victims were under 65 and none of them were children. >> it's not too late to get a flu shot and there's an easy way to find out where to get vaccinated. the cdc has a flu shot finder map where you can type in your city or zip code and they will show you all the places to get a shot including prices and hours. there's a link on our website. one person injured and two in custody after a drive-by shooting in concord. this is video of the suspects being detained yesterday afternoon after the shooting on grant street and noel drive. witnesses say a honda pulled up just after four and fired two shots. the victim has only mine injuries. another scary incident where a man was shot outside of wendy's restaurant. it was after 6:00 last night on monument boulevard. the victim was shot after a con -- con frantation with several men inside the restaurant.

the victim was taken to the medical center with serious injuries, and police are still looking for the shooters. >> the alameda county bomb squad was called out to detonate bombs found during a probation search. >> >> a fire in berkeley has left 8 residents and a pet without place to stay. flames were reported before 2:30 yesterday average in a two-story business made up of a business and apartments. one resident ran around warning everyone of the danger. >> i ran back upstairs and made sure people were getting out of the building and made sure all

the windows and doors were shut so it didn't go through any of the buildings and eliminate the smoke damage or the spread of the fire. >> jessica tells us she has extensive medical training. it took about a half-hour to knock down the fire and the red cross is helping displaced residence find shelter. >> los gatos police are releasing the sketch of a man who attacked a woman in the so-called knockout game. he is described as a slender blackman in his 20s, bearing blue jeans and a baseball cap. he hit the woman with a chosed fist monday afternoon after the strip mall on blossom hill road. in the knockout game they try to knockout victims with a single sucker punch. foster farms said their livingston plant will be up and running today after a three-day closure after an infestation of cockroaches. in october they were also being threatened to be closed downburst of a salmonella issues. foster farms issued a statement saying we want to assure our consumers and customers and valued employees that we work

>> it's being called the biggest retail credit card fraud case of. retail giant target originally estimated about 40 million debit and credit cards were compromised during a two-week period in november and december, but as alan wang reports, it turns out three times that many cards were affected. >> it was my debit card compromised. >> target said 70 million to 110 million of its customers had their personal information stolen, as well. now thieves can open up more accounts under their names. anna said she still shops here, but she uses cash instead. >> yes, i have. i have somewhat lost my faith in target. >> neiman marcus confirms unauthorized customer card activity has been taking place since mid-december. neiman marcus doesn't know the scope of the breach, but today they said we have begun to contain the intrusion and have taken significant steps to further enhance security.

crusade. it's located in the old kaiser field hospital. it's a world war ii era building. the vice mayor claims the national park service wants to buy the build to go make it part of the historic kaiser shipyard. many officials thought it was vacant. on december 31st richmond's fire marshal was in the neighborhood and stopped by to take a look. he told me what should have been a 15-minute visit turned into a two-hour eye-opening inspection. >> about 70% of the building had no sheetrock and sheetrock is for stopping the spread of fire. there were no fire blocks. insulation, there was no heat. there was cook appliances in the hall which. >> he said all fire exits were chained and caged. the fire marshall placed a stop work placard outside the building because construction was also going on inside without any kind of city permit. we were not allowed inside the building to see for ourselves,

but we did find the leaders of the mosque leaving city hall after a meeting with the city manager. >> do you think it's unfair they are asking to you leave? >> well, no comment on this. we are working with them very closely. >> is it unsafe, would you say, the building? >> it is safe. >> it's safe? >> it is safe. >> it hurts me to have to remove someone from their place of worship, but i know in the end that they are going to -- they are going to be alive. >> sometime early next week the fire marshal will order them to close. >> but the vice mayor wants to avoid that. he has put the matter of the mosque on the city council's agenda for this tuesday. in richmond, lyanne melendez, abc7nous. san francisco mayor ed lee is calling for an end to illegal behavior at the main library. library officials have faced a range of complaints in recent months including assault, drug

yesterday the judge delayed the decision until next week on whether to move the case to juvenile court. police say thomas set sasha's clothing on fire while he slept on a transit bus. sasha was wearing a skirt, but doesn't identify as gay or straight. >> he told a police officer he was homofoe bike >> he has emphasized that he is not homophobic, and i can't imagine the context in which he would have said something about that. >> the defense attorney says trying thomas as a minor will give him a better chance at rehabilitation. first it was the rim fire and now it's the drought. a double disaster for tourism in the yosemite region. take a look at the conditions at the dodge ridge ski area. still not open because of the lack of snow. one cabin owner said it's the driest winter she's seen in 25 years. business owners are barely getting by. >> i think this is the worst we've ever had this winter.

>> this morning general motors is recalling more than 300,000 trucks because of at fire risk. the affected models include 2014 chevy silverados and gmc full-size trucks. they said the vehicles have problems with their software that could lead to the overheating of exhaust components and cause a fire. eight fires have been confirmed, but no one has been injured. drivers will be contacted about the recall by mail and they can take their trucks to the dealerships next week. in the meantime they said avoid leaving the truck in idle and unattended. san jose convention center is being taken over by a cavalcade of cars. the international auto show continues today and tomorrow. abc7 news reporter jonathan bloom finds out that a seismic shift in the industry has brought silicon valley and

lisa, finally seeing something on live doppler 7hd? >> yeah. not only the rain headed our way but also the visibility problems in the form of low clouds and high clouds. so as we take a look at live doppler 7hd this morning, you notice it does look a little different finally. this is the beginning of a cold front, although it's a weak one. it's going to sweep through the bay area, bringing some much, much-needed rain. we do have fog, as well and a mostly cloudy sky to start on out. here's a look at the rain. it is right around fort brague. in the next two hours or owe it should hit santa rosa and points southward. you can see the low clouds there from mt. tam. all things going on this morning. we also have a beach hazard to pass on in a moment. upper 40s in san francisco and

oakland. from our exploratorium camera, very calm bay out there with numbers all in the 40s. warmer with the cloud cover. we had a few upper 30s earlier. right now mid-40s for the delta, concord and livermore. doesn't look likely that you are going to see any rain. we have the list running. light snow is headed toward the sierra nevada. anywhere from a dust to go three or four elevation high-elevation snow at about 6,000 or 7,000 feet. foggy, cloudy with showers on the way. a chance of showers linger throughout the day. temperatures coming back to near normal readings across the bay. mainly in the 50s. it all changes at high pressure builds back strongly from tomorrow into early next week. it will give us a return to offshore flow. high fire deng we're perhaps record warmth, near 70 degrees. but a beach hazard so some very strong waves, high waves works the possibility of rip currents all the way down the coast.

so certainly be careful out there if you are headed to the beach, the surfers, always check the forecast and even next week looking at pretty good swells out there. high pressure will give way just temporarily for the day today as the cold front pushes into the bay area. we are looking at about a tenth inch of rain north of the golden gate and trace amounts elsewhere. here's the timing on the cold front. so at 7:00 notice still to the north of us, but by 9:00, 10:00 it is in the north bay, and by the afternoon it continues to sag southward. maybe on the peninsula a light shower, but looks like into the east bay and the santa clara valley it will wash out. don't look for rain into. and then clear skies. tonight it will be chilly, back into the 30s. but it's really not going to help out with our deficit because we are running so far behind, as much as 15 inches below where we should be. 8.5 inches san francisco and we are under by about 5 inches in
