>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, january 12th. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. good morning to you. we have some fog left over from yesterday's rain and the atmosphere continues to cool. so numbers are hovering around freezing in parts of the north bay. look at the visibility. quarter of a mile in napa with two miles in oakland. right now the coast is at five miles and three quarters of a mile out in livermore. so be careful out there. we are looking at temperatures on the chilly side but by 7:00 we will be up in the upper 30s. low to mid-40s elsewhere. more sunshine is on tap for the afternoon with mid-50s by noontime. we will hold it into the lower

60s today for highs. it will be a chilly night tonight and a look at how dry our extendedout look is becoming when we come back in a few minutes. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. we begin this morning with breaking news. a minor traffic accident on interstate 280 has led to a shooting in the bay view involving an off-duty san francisco police officer. the fender-bender occurred on the freeway, but the shooting happened when the officer and the other driver pulled off the road just after midnight. the two got into a physical altercation and during the scuffle the unidentified female officer fired her gun, striking the other person in the leg. police say the victim has a minor leg wound and refused medical treatment. developing news, there's been another possible arson incident in san jose this morning. a small fire extinguished at 24th and santa clara streets this morning is linked to

several other cases by san jose fire officials. investigators say a firebug struck at least ate other times since wednesday. yesterday setting a victorian home on fire with two people inside. this morning police have released a sketch of a possible suspect. firefighters are offering a big reward to catch the arsonist. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian tells us worried neighbors will distribute this sketch door to door today. >> the fire ravaged this victorian home before dawn. it belonged to an elderly couple who moved in 50 years ago. they barely got out alive. >> they opened the door and tell them get out. get out. the house is on fire. >> jose helped them escape. he's learning more about what he can do as a downtown resident to protect himself from an arsonist. >> you don't know who did this? >> don is part of the 13th street neighborhood advisory committee.

he's talking with his neighbors about the man investigators believe started at least eight fires. >> hopefully this person realizes folks are after them and stops doing this because it's be a excusely outrageous. >> this is video from a surveillance camera across the street. you see a man walking back and forth four times before the fire. police want to talk to him. >> these fires this targeted san jose residents in the darkest hours of the night when they are most vulnerable. >> volunteers will go door to door passing out the sketch and information. >> one fire is one fire too many. it's clear this is a guy who intends to do harm and we've got to do everything we can to protect each other. >> the firefighters union is offering a $10,000 reward. in san jose, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. in morning investigators plan to enter a palo alto house where two bodies were found friday following a fire.

flames broke out about 7:15 friday night in a home on the 900 block of embarcadero road. the structure is still not stable. crews have not been able to go inside yet. a next door neighbor said a man and his caretaker lived in the home. their names have not been released. this morning a man who was shot in san francisco's mission district is recovering from surgery. it was just after 5:30 last night when police received a report of a gunshot victim. he was found on shotbell street between 23rd and 24th streets and rushed to the hospital. bad weather is preventing a recovery team from reaching the site where a plane crash killed a bay area tech executive. dalesmith and family members crashed in december. the wreckage was found friday, nearly a month and a half after the plane disappeared from radar in a remote part of idaho.

his wife spoke with abc7 news. >> we have waited a long time to have some kind of closer and we kind of knew their chances were not good. this has allowed us to just identify exactly what happened and to move on and not be in that waiting place. >> the man who found the wreckage, dalesmith's brother, spoke with abc7 news by phone yesterday. >> you are just so happy that you found the plane, you know, and then after a couple of seconds that kind of disappears and the grief hits you because you found the plane. >> crews will meet tomorrow to consider options for reaching the remote crash site and recovering those bodies. the effort to create a park in memory of slain 13-year-old andy lopez will cost sonoma somewhere between $2 million and

$3 million. andy lopez was shot to death october 22nd by a sonoma county sheriffs deputy while carrying a bb gun designed to look like an ak-47 assault rifle. a memorial is being rebuilt in the viola can't lot where he died but community members angered by the shooting want a park to be built there and named for him. county supervisors are pretty eager to try to heel the rift. one tells the sonoma county press democrat the money could come out of a reserve fund. $7 million have already been set aside for recreational access. the nationwide flu outbreak continues to bro. officials have confirmed 7 bay area deaths due to the flu. two others in the county have been attributed to the virus but health officials are still waiting for test results to come back. this year the flu is not just affecting the very young and old. more than 60% of patients are

between 18 and 64. that's twice as many as last year. according to the cdc, 37 states highlighted here in red are reporting widespread flu activity. in san rafael, medical center of marin sponsored a free flu clinic yesterday. the goal is to vaccinate as many people as possible in the community to help stop the virus from spreading. >> i try to encourage everyone to get a flu shot because the flu shot will help protect you against several various other flus, including the h1n1 virus which is the most virulent of the group and causing the most deaths. >> according to the state health department, getting the flu shot can reduce your chances of getting the virus by 50% to 70%. the cdc has a finder map that has all the places near you that offer the vaccine, including prices and hours. we have a link on our website.

a fisherman was rescued after his boat got stuck in the mud near the dumbarton bridge. it happened just before 6:00 last night. the fisherman got stuck on the eastern side of the bridge. rescue crews brought him into east palo alto. the man was hurt. he hurt his foot in the incident, but he declined to go to the hospital. a sharp-eyed morgan hill resident reported a copper wire theft. there were 15 street lights in their electrical boxes damaged and 2700 feet of copper wire missing last week. the cost to repair the damage has not been determined. police don't have any suspects. they are asking residents to report any suspicious activity. >> turning to the weather, some much-needed rain has finally come back to the bay area. it happened yesterday. this video was taken in san francisco's chinatown.

the roads were also wet in marin with the north bay seeing most of the rain. from oakland into san francisco just past the toll plaza on the approach to the bay bridge only a few sprinkles. the storm system brought a welcome site in tahoe, snow. this is video of heavenly mountain yesterday afternoon, courtesy tahoe tv. it was only a few inches but it is the first measurable snow around tahoe since early december. the snow isn't such a welcome sight outside of california and now millions are dealing with more than just cold and ice. rain is causing new concerns. and fierce winds more than 80 miles an hour toppled big rigs like that one in montana and funnel clouds have been reported near raleigh, north carolina. here's lindsay. >> the polar vortex stopped, triggering massive flooding. >> i've lived here five years now and this is the first time

that it has needed this area. >> in palm beach county, florida nearly 22 inches of rain in 24 hours. residents waiting knee-deep. some even using kayiaks to escape. >> it hasn't been here since hurricane katrina. >> the driver of this s.u.v. died because she couldn't see where the street ended and the canal began. in georgia strong winds sent a tree crashing through the roof of this mobile home, pinning a 14-year-old girl inside to the floor. >> a delicate situation where we had to keep the tree stable at all times so it didn't continue to fall on this young lead. >> rescuers used an air bag to drop up the tree to save her. her nearby koss sin was rescued, too. funnel clouds in north carolina. and heavy winds ripping through the houses being built. farther north, a raceway, the

>> the body of former prime minister aerial sharon will lie in state today. the public will be able to pay respects to the hard-charging controversial leader who died yesterday after being in a coma for years. sharon never regained consciousness after suffering a massive stroke back in 2006. he was 85 years old. his coffin arrived at the israeli parliament this morning. a state memorial is planned for tomorrow with leaders from all over the globe attending. vice president joe biden will

>> the next stop is los angeles. then back to korea. abc7 news. you could soon be paying more for electricity, according to the san francisco chronicle. the california public utilities commission is expected to vote on a potential new pricing plan. if approved, you will be charged for when you use electricity rather than the amount of use. supporters hope it will encourage conservation. state public health officials are launching a new online database to help you learn more about the make up you are using. the cosmetics program lists the names of about 30,000 products that contain harmful chemicals or have not been extensively tested for safety. the public health department said the data business is meant to pressure manufacturers to use safer ingredients. we have a link to the database

looking at numbers a little cooler while our coast is in the upper 40s. 46 in san jose. our exploratorium come raw looking at the city with numbers much, much cooler up by the delta and the north bay where numbers are probably going to however around freezing in santa rosa. you have the ground fog there. 37 there. petaluma upper 30s and freezing conditions in fairfield. 40 in concord. you do have fog out toward the livermore valley. our forecast highlights from our emeryville camera not as much fog as yesterday but we will see more forming in the morning hours. then a return to sunny conditions today with near record warmth as we head into tuesday and wednesday. that ridge really begins to build tomorrow. so here's a look at the beach hazard once again with the northwesterly swells continuing to build throughout the day today." they will subside by tomorrow but if you are headed out today from anywhere around point reyes, the sonoma county coast all the way down through monterey looks kind. dicey out there so be careful.

quarter mile visibility from napa. half-mile by the delta. the coast at 4 miles. take a look at oakland and livermore. pretty foggy out there. be careful as you head on out. high pressure sits offshore. it will allow for the cloud cover this morning from the moisture of yesterday's rain. then that pushes through and we will look for yet another sunny afternoon. so in terms of the outlook, it looks-like this high right now is going to continue to build. as it does the flow around the high becomes offshore and maybe some gusty winds into the middle of the week this will allow for temperatures to steadily climb. today numbers coming up out of the 50s for most. although half moon bay should be in the upper 50s with the high surf. 62 in palo alto, 63 in fremont. mid-60s down toward morgan hill with about 62 in napa. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. the numbers slowly climb for the beginning of the work week. then looking at the warming

outbreak. the south bay side authority said they collected nearly 200 dead birds in one week. the freshwater pond is located on rodeo road in redwood shores. they first became aware of the problem after local bird watchers noticed a lot of birds were dying and contacted the u.s. fish and wildlife service. >> it is a waterborne disease so when the birds are in the water, it spreads the disease. >> so the plan now is to drain the manmade pond and kill the bacteria. it's not a threat to humans, but officials have put up an orange barrier. you see it there. they put it up around the area to keep people and dogs from a nearby dog park out of the water. a family is amazed, more than a little relieved that their puppy survived nine days lost in sub freezing temperatures. >> oh, my goodness. i'm so thankful. just so, so thankful. >> a boxer puppy learned the

hard way the dangers of running away from home. he jumped a fence and vanished in subzero weather while his owners were visiting family in maine over christmas. on new year's day they had no choice but to go back to maryland without him. nine days later they got a call. a neighbor back in maine found him. he was hyperthermic, had a broken leg, but he was alive. the family made the 14 hour drive to get him and they will all go back home to maryland later today. up next on the abc7 sunday morning news, new details about another security breach and why officials say they waited so long to let their customers know. and the world's crookedest street, at least that's what it's no one has, the

after that fog lifts 9:00, 10:00. we will look for the numbers to begin to warm considerably as we start the work week with perhaps a few records. we will talk about that in a couple minutes. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. neiman marcus has confirmed they were hit by cyber thieves last month and customers' credit card information was stolen. neiman marcus is not saying how many customers were affected but they said they are working with the secret service with the breach. consumers are wondering why it took them a month to reveal what happened. >> it seems to me they didn't want to ruin their christmas shopping season. >> well, neiman marcus released a statement yesterday saying we have gun to contain the intrusion and have taken significant steps to further enhance information security. the news comes on the heels of target's revelation that nearly 110 million people were affected by a massive credit hack over the holidays. and that is nearly three times

george stephanopoulos coming up at 98:00 right here on abc7. new this morning, the next best thing next to santa claus arrived at the space station. this rocket was launched thursday in virginia. it contains 3,000 pounds of equipment and experiments provided by n.a.s.a.. it's also carrying christmas presents for the space station residents. delivery is a bit late. it attached to the international space station did 30 minutes ago. east coast weather delayed the launch several times. now to the stunning images playing out over the mojave desert. there are pictures from the third test flight. it's the closest to space yet in a dream to find a way to take ordinary americans to new heights. here's abc news reporter mohamed. >> three, two, one. >> reporter: this is spaceship

after two brushes with death. we have the story from menlo park. >> his face is familiar because you have seen harold on the news. he was among the first responders to new york on 9/11 leading a national mobile rescue unit. he's now chief at the menlo park fire protection district. his life changed dramatically last year when he fell off a ladder while pruning bushes in the backyard of his san jose home. >> one of the goals that set for myself was coming back to do this job. fortunately with the board's approval and a lot of people of that helped me along the way, you know, i'm here. >> that accident left him unable to walk and with limited use of his left hand. but he's back on the job after months of physical therapy. the toughest time was spending 66 days in the hospital. >> i had to relearn how to brush my teeth in the hospital, you know. who would ever thought you would have to do that. how to move around, how to feed

myself. you know, so -- and then overcome, you know, the hardest part of this injury is overcoming both the physical and the mental aspects of what will push you back every day if you let it. >> he also had a near fatal set-back on june 1st when a buildup of fluid caused his back sutures to rupture. >> it's serious. spinal meningitis, those things are what can do you in. >> but he fought back and proved he can still function effective as chief. >> he set his goals to come back. that's just his natural personality. >> retirement is not for him, he says, and he will soon be getting a special van with hand controls to allow him to drive. >> he will be easing back to work, working only part-time for the next few weeks and hopefully will be able to work full time. he's taking it one day at a time n menlo park, david loui, abc7 news. if you ride mass transportationity today don't be

alarmed if you see a lot of people wearing no pants. it is a global tradition that again in 2002 and hannam braced, of course, in san francisco ever since. today is the day people go out in public with no pants because that's what they have been asked to do by a group of improv comedians. in san francisco organizers say people wearing no pants will be riding bart and unistarting around 1:00 this afternoon. what began as an practical joke has become an annual journey out into the cold with bear legs all over the world. tourism is the number one industry for san francisco, but it can also be a big make for those who live around major tourist destinations. people who live around the crooked block of lombard street are now asking the city for help. >> they come from all over the world. >> venezuela. >> i'm from china. >> everyone wants to see lombard. known as the crockeddest street in the world.

sunny skies return today and record warmth as high pressure builds in tomorrow. it really gets underway tuesday and into the middle of the week and that allows for the temperatures to climb. we should see numbers just around 670 degrees for parts of the south bay -- 60 degrees this part of the year. we could be approaching 70 for a couple days coming up. visibility not a problem at the san carlos airport or mountain view. take a look at livermore. just a quarter mile there, as well as the north bay. the coast right now is at five miles. we are seven degrees colder this morning in oakland and five degrees colder in concord and a few degrees of warming in san jose. so beach hazard. big waves this afternoon. we saw them yesterday. they will continue to build throughout the afternoon today. so very, very dangerous out there. always nice to take a stroll at the beach, but you see the surfers out there and hopefully they know what they are doing because it is very large out there. high pressure is offshore.
