[ all ] we're the pearsons, and we love chex! >> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, january 12th. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> carolyn, we do have some clouds pushing through the area. a look at live doppler 7hd. you can see the cloudiness. no rain and visibility is a problem in napa and livermore, down to a quarter of a mile with some temperatures dropping quickly. the coast is at five-mile visibility. we are looking at numbers in the low 30s now around the delta and the north bay. but by about 7:00 we will climb up through the 30s. mid-40s around the coast and

inland. by noontime mid-50s. so feeling cool, but brightening up with more sunny skies and highs in the upper 50s to low 60s. by 4:00 we will be at about 60 degrees. tonight look for other chilly evening. we did have some changes that involve more dry weather and some gusty winds headed your way for the week ahead. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. >> thank you, lisa. we begin this morning with breaking news. a minor traffic accident on interstate 280 has led to a shooting in the bay view involving an off-duty san francisco police officer. the fender-bender occurred on the freeway, but the shooting happened when the officer and the other driver pulled off the road into a gas station just after the midnight collision. police say the two got into a physical altercation near the chevron station. during the scuffle the unidentified female officer fired her gun, striking the other person in the leg.

police say the victim has a minor leg wound and refused medical treatment. developing developing news, two more suspicious fires have broken out in san jose in the same area. right any police are investigating a reported explosion and fire behind a church. earlier this morning firefighters put out a small fire in the same area that is also suspicious. investigators say the firebug has struck at least eight other times in the last five days. there is a sketch of a possible suspect and firefighters are offering a big reward. worried neighbors plan to distribute this sketch door to door today after an elderly couple birthly escaped their burning home yesterday.

>> 9 fire ravaged this victorian home before dawn. it belongs to an kerly couple who moved in 50 years ago. they barely got out alive. >> they opened the door and tell them get out. get out. the house is on fire. >> jose helped them escape. he's learning more about what he can do as a downtown resident to protect himself from an arsonist. >> you don't know who did this? >> don is part of the 13th street neighborhood advisory committee. he's talking with his neighbors about the man investigators believe started at least eight fires. >> hopefully this person realizes folks are after them and stops doing this because it's absolutely outrageous. >> this is video from a surveillance camera across the street. you see a man walking back and forth four times before the fire. police want to talk to him. >> these fires have targeted san jose residents in the darkest hours of the night when they are most vulnerable. >> volunteers will go door to door passing out the sketch and

smoke detectors. he is leading the effort. >> one fire is one fire too many. it's clear this is a guy who intends to do harm and we've got to do everything we can to protect each other. >> the firefighters union is offering a $10,000 reward. in san jose, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. this morning investigators plan to enter a palo alto house where two bodies were found friday following a fire. flames broke out about 7:15 friday night in a home on the 900 block of embarcadero road. the structure is still not stable. crews have not been able to go inside yet. a next door neighbor said a man and his caretaker lived in the home. their names have not been released. this morning a man who was shot in san francisco's mission district is recovering from surgery. it was just after 5:30 last night when police received a report of a gunshot victim.

he was found on shotwell street between 23rd and 24th streets and rushed to the hospital. bad weather is preventing a recovery team from reaching the site where a plane crash killed a bay area tech executive. dale smith, his son and daughter-in-law, along with his daughter and fiancee all died after the plane crashed in early december. the wreckage was found friday, nearly a month and a half after the plane disappeared from radar in a remote part of idaho. smith's wife spoke with abc7 news. >> we have waited a long time to have some kind of closer and we kind of knew their chances were not good. this has allowed us to just identify exactly what happened and to move on and not be in that waiting place. >> dale smith's brother found the wreckage, dale smith's brother, spoke with abc7 news by phone yesterday. >> you are just so happy that you found the plane, you know, and then after a couple of

seconds that kind of disappears and the grief hits you because you found the plane. >> crews will meet tomorrow to consider options for reaching the remote crash site and recovering those bodies. the effort to create a park in memory of slain 13-year-old andy lopez will cost sonoma county somewhere between $2 million and $3 million. andy lopez was shot to death october 22nd by a sonoma county sheriffs deputy while carrying a bb gun designed to look like an ak-47 assault rifle. a memorial is being built in the vacant lot where he died, but community members angered by the shooting want a park to be built there and named for him. county supervisors are pretty eager to try to heal the rift. one tells the sonoma county press democrat the money could

come out of a reserve fund. $7 million have already been set aside for recreational access. the nationwide flu outbreak continues to grow. officials have confirmed seven bay area deaths due to the flu. two others in the county have been attributed to the virus but health officials are still waiting for test results to come back. this year the flu is not just affecting the very young and very old. more than 60% of patients are between 18 and 64. that's twice as many as last year. according to the cdc, 37 states highlighted here in red are reporting widespread flu activity. california is one of them. in san rafael, medical center of marin sponsored a free flu clinic yesterday. the goal was to vaccinate as many people as possible in the community to help stop the virus from spreading. >> i try to encourage everyone to get a flu shot because the flu shot will help protect you against several various other

flus, including the h1n1 virus which is the most virulent of the group and causing the most illness and deaths. >> according to the state health department, getting the flu shot can reduce your chances of getting the virus by 50% to 70%. the cdc has a finder map that has all the places near you that offer the vaccine, including prices and hours. we have a link on our website. awbc7 news.com un"see it on tv." a fisherman was rescued after his boat got stuck in the mud near the dumbarton bridge. it happened just before 6:00 last night. the fisherman got stuck on the mud on the eastern side of the bridge. menlo park rescue crews brought him into east palo alto. the man was hurt. he hurt his foot in the incident, but he declined to go to the hospital. a sharp-eyed morgan hill resident reported a copper wire

theft. officers found 15 street lights and their electrical boxes damaged and 2700 feet of copper wire missing last week. the cost to repair the damage has not been determined. police don't have any suspects. they are asking residents to report any suspicious activity. >> turning to the weather, some much-needed rain was finally back in the bay area. it happened yesterday. this video was taken in san francisco's chinatown. the roads were also wet in marin with the north bay seeing most of the rain. from oakland into san francisco just past the toll plaza on the approach to the bay bridge only a few sprinkles. the storm system brought a welcome site in tahoe, snow. this is video of heavenly mountain yesterday afternoon, courtesy tahoe tv. it was only a few inches, but it is the first measurable snow around tahoe since early december. the snow isn't such a

welcome sight outside of california and now millions are dealing with more than just cold and ice. rain and flooding are causing new concerns. and fierce winds more than 80 miles an hour toppled big rigs like that one in montana and funnel clouds have been reported near raleigh, north carolina. here's lindsey janice. >> reporter: the polar vortex stalled, triggering massive flooding. >> i've lived here five years now and this is the first time that it has needed this area. >> reporter: in palm beach county, florida, nearly 22 inches of rain in 24 hours. residents waiting knee-deep. some even using kayiaks to escape. >> it hasn't been like this since hurricane katrina, as far as i can remember. >> the driver of this s.u.v. died because she couldn't see where the street ended and the canal began. in georgia strong winds sent a tree crashing through the roof of this mobile home, pinning a 14-year-old girl inside to the

floor. >> a delicate situation where we had to keep the tree stable at all times so it didn't continue to fall on this young lady. >> rescuers used an air bag to drop up the tree to save her. her cousin found nearby was safely rescued, too. funnel clouds in north carolina. and heavy winds ripping through the houses being built. farther north, a raceway, the slick track started this starting gate car plowing into the horses. those horses are all okay. and in maine, freezing rain triggering this major accident between four tractor trailers and two cars. lindsay janice, abc news. >> lisa, i wish we could take some of their rain and send them some of our sunshine. >> yeah, our woes this morning just extends to the low visibility and fog. other than that, we are looking

>> the body of former israeli prime minister ariel sharon will lie in state today. the public will be able to pay respects to the hard-charging controversial leader who died yesterday after being in a coma for years. sharon never regained consciousness after suffering a massive stroke back in 2006. he was 85 years old. his coffin arrived at the israeli parliament this morning. a state memorial is planned for tomorrow with leaders from all over the globe attending. vice president joe biden will represent the u.s. britain's tony blair will also attend. after the ceremony the military convoy will take him to his ranch for burial. ♪ >> it is one of the most popular bands you probably never heard of. u-kiss, a korean boy band, has performed all over the world. last night was very special as one member returned to his roots

upper 30s, redwood city and oakland, to 47 san francisco, 46 for you in san jose with the coast in the upper 40s. so we are about a degree to seven degrees cooler than yesterday with temperatures in the mid-30s with the fog in napa. santa rosa 38. fog livermore at 39 and the numbers dropping through the upper 30s in concord as well. so this morning we are looking at the fog. then by the afternoon a return to the sunshine. but the surf will build so that's a concern for some of you if you are going to be outside enjoying the beach with near record warmth headed our way by tuesday and wednesday. so the pressure gradients will continue to tighten and build throughout tomorrow, the beginning of the work week. so the fog has been a problem in livermore. oakland you are better at ten miles. but still looking foggy up in the napa valley and the coast is cool right now with five mile visibility. here's the swell. it continues to build. the buies offshore at 18 feet

now at 14 seconds. very strong seas with the possibility of rip current and sneaker waves. looking at what's ahead, the clouds clear on out. by the afternoon we are nice and sunny again. we will wait a couple days on our warmup but the overall picture shows high pressure. it's offshore but it's a strong ridge. it will continue to build closer to the coast and that allows the storm track to stay far away. in fact, the stronger it builds, we will see the offshore flow and that allows for temperatures to really climb to as much as 15 to 20 degrees above average highs. so today most of you out of the 50s except at the coast. upper 50s here in clear lake 58. otherwise milder numbers from oakland at 64. 63 in fremont and san jose with santa cruz up to the mid-60s. vallejo 61 degrees and the accuweather seven-day forecast then looking at temperatures coming up a few more degrees tomorrow. so warmer.

we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, carolyn. >> it's not as cool as it could be. we have some clouds insulating us this morning. but oakland has dropped into the upper 30s. napa mid-30s and 39 livermore with the fog from the livermore valley to napa this morning. we are looking at some clearing as we get through the midmorning hours. then by the afternoon temperatures will be in the upper 50s with high surf along the coast. but low 60s to the mid-60s around the bay. so you know that means plenty of sunshine. we've got another weather system headed our way. it's also going to build through the upcoming work week. i'll explain coming up. >> thank you, lisa. neiman marcus has confirmed they were hit by cyber thieves last month and customers' credit card information was stolen. neiman marcus is not saying how many customers were affected but they said they are working with the secret service on the breach.

customers are wondering why it took them a month to reveal what happened. >> it seems to me they didn't want to ruin their christmas shopping season. >> neiman marcus released a statement yesterday saying we have begun to contain the intrusion and have taken significant steps to further enhance information security. the news comes on the heels of target's revelation that nearly 110 million people were affected by a massive credit hack over the holidays. and that is nearly three times as many people as they originally estimated. some security experts believe the breaches at both retailers are part of the same scheme. the pentagon is considering a proposal to train iraqi forces in counterterrorism operations. if approved u.s. troops would not enter iraq, but instead train iraqi forces in a third country, most likely jordan. sources say the idea is being discussed within the u.s.

his company's virgin gallactic later this year. >> we believe there are literally millions that want to go into space the flights won't come cheap. at $2,000 a pop, nearly 7,000 people have signed up, all for the chance to feel weightless for a while in outerspace and a bit more weightless in the wallet, as well. abc news, new york. you know, we often here praise for firefighters for their courage and bravery saving lives. this is a story about a firefighter with those same traits, but the most amazing thing about him is how he has persevered to make a come-back after two brushes with death. abc7 news reporter david loui has the story from menlo park. >> reporter: his face is familiar because you have seen harold on the news. he was among the first responders to new york on 9/11 leading a national mobile rescue unit. for more than 30 years he's been a firefighter and now a chief at menlo park fire protection

has become an annual journey out into the cold with bear legs all over the world. tourism is the number one industry for san francisco, but it can also be a big headache for those who live around major tourist destinations. people who live around the crooked block of lombard street are now asking the city for help. >> they come from all over the world. >> venezuela. >> i'm from china. >> everyone wants to see lombard. known as the crookedest street in the world. >> it's very historic and a landmark. >> this is a slow period during the off-season. residents say multiply this by hundreds to see what they experience every day during the spring and summer. >> taxis and buses and this is the first attraction that people come to san francisco, they come here. >> residents say in the last few years there has been an explosion of tourists. it's overwhelming.

>> we are not equipped to be a tourist attraction like the golden gate bridge or union square. we have no facilities for the people, we have no security. >> san franciscans. who live near the painted lady were able to ban tourists from their neighborhood. and further restrictions concern the president of extranomical tours. >> as the city becomes less tourist friendly, there will be less people that will want to come to san francisco. >> supervisor mark feral is hoping to strike a balance. he's asking the city attorney to explore options like banning cars from lombard, limiting hours and even blocking off the street. >> we want to do the least restrictive thing that we can, the least restrictive regulations to make sure it doesn't change its current use or in any way detract from it as

appalled at is happening at muir woods today. >> one reason why this resident, paul, spoke to the marin county board of supervisors as they drafted a letter to the national park service about plans to manage the sometimes teeming masses. a large parking area is off the table. there's now a reservation plan in the works. >> would you have come if you would have needed to make a reservation. >> probably not. >> now the county will ask for a scientific study. >> the study would look scientifically at the study how many people are too many people? when does the benefit of sharing this environment become harmful to it? >> one thing that has to be taken into consideration is what is happening to those trees that the park service is charged with protecting. >> locals would like to cap park visits at 750,000 people a year. but this is a money-making venture for the national park service. the price of that? cars and buses that cause collateral damage by clogging local roads. >> did you count rings in the tree?

we've been sitting at 47 san francisco. dropping to a cool 39 in oakland. low hows los gatos. half moon bay in the mid-40s. we have pretty good visibility at the coast. our exploratorium camera, another have been taj point with mid-30s tampa. upper 30s concord and livermore. definitely a little chilly out there. but the clouds insulating us a little bit. we will look for more sunshine today. in fact, these clouds are going to push on out pretty soon. that will allow more fair weather and, in fact, with the high pressure ridge build questioning are looking at record warmth for several days next week. average highs mainly from about 56 to 59 for mid-january. we will surpass that really anywhere from ten to fifteen degrees warmer than we should be. beginning on tuesday. three mile visibility in napa. that's an improvement but still issues around the livermore

valley but those too will improve by about 9:00. the surf continues to build. the northwesterly swells about 18 feet offshore. expecting anywhere from 10 to 16 feet out there. pretty dangerous throughout the day. we are looking at the clouds to just hang on for the next couple of hours. by 9:00 we are looking at full sunshine. in the days ahead as the high gets closer and it continues to build on in, you know what that means. it keeps the storm track away and allows for the winds to shift. that's going to bring some warmer air our way. in fact, the strong ridge is going to allow for temperatures to hit near 70 degrees. records, perhaps, will be shattered for several days next week. so mid-70s has become a common theme in southern california, 48 yosemite. a dusting of snow yesterday in the sierra. monterey is back into the low 60s today. and locally around the bay we are looking at temperatures mainly in the low to mid-60s from san jose to oakland this afternoon.

61 in antioch. and at the coast it will be in the upper 50s. so about the same deal over in charlotte with temperatures pretty much in the 50s. maybe flux rate waiting a little warmer through the afternoon. but that's a look at our winning forecast for you. the abc news day seven day forecast showing the temperatures are still going to climb right open through the work week and some cooling as we head toward next weekend, which still looks dry. i don't know how to spin it any more. we are getting toward the end of the month now. >> all right, thank you, lisa. let's check out sports. there won't be one final 49ers game at the stick after all. that possibility disappeared yesterday. this morning the niners will try to advance to the nfc championship game for the third straight season when they meet the carolina panthers in charlotte. kickoff is at 10:05.

that's this morning. today's winner faces the seahawks in seattle next sunday. following the seahawks victory over the saints. here's mike shumann with the highlights in this morning's sports. >> good morning. seattle is still king of the hill in the nfc as they handled the saints yesterday at century link field. it was quite ady for marshawn lynch with a record-setting performance. both teams talking a little smack pregame and in warmups. that's not unusual for seattle. go to the fourth quarter. hawks up 16-8. lynch gets to the outside. 31 yards. second td of the game. 143 yards rushing. not over. drew brees, only td pass of the game, nine yards to marcus colston. 8-point game with 32 seconds left. saints recover the on-side kick. 13 seconds left. no timeouts. the sideline, instead of going out-of-bounds he tries the lateral and throws it forward. that's a penalty. game over. seahawks win it 23-15 and they will host the nfc championship game next weekend.
