>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, january 12th. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi there, carolyn. good morning to you. we have a patch of clouds over the bay area but live doppler 7hd shows that the cloudiness is thin and it will begin to push on out for a mostly sunny afternoon. so partly cloudy with numbers in the 40s. 50s at the coast. by noontime we will be well into the 50s. this afternoon a couple low to mid-60s. still sunny and dry a cool evening on tap. high pressure continues to build. we will have some gusty offshore

winds. you know what that means. temperatures continue to climb into the work week ahead. i'll have the 7 day forecast coming up. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. >> two more suspicious fires have been put out in san jose this morning where a serial arsonist has set as many as a dozen fires since wednesday. the first fire this morning was small enough to be handled by neighborhood at south 24th and east santa clara streets. about four hours ago a trailer burned behind a church on south 26th street. nobody was injured in either fire. this is a police step of the man police and arson investigators are looking for. he was spotted near a house fire yesterday, which nearly trapped an elderly couple. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian talks with worried neighbors who plan to distribute this sketch door to door

>> the fire ravaged this victorian home before dawn. it belongs to an elderly couple who moved in 50 years ago. they barely got out alive. >> they opened the door and tell them get out. get out. the house is on fire. >> jose helped them escape. he's learning more about what he can do as a downtown resident to protect himself from an arsonist. >> you don't know who did this? >> don is part of the 13th street neighborhood advisory committee. he's talking with his neighbors about the man investigators believe started at least eight fires. >> hopefully this person realizes that folks are after them and stops doing this because it's absolutely outrageous. >> this is video from a surveillance camera across the street. you see a man walking back and forth four times before the fire. police want to talk to him. >> these fires have targeted san jose residents in the darkest hours of the night when they are most vulnerable. >> residents will go door to door passing out the sketch and. smoke detectors. he is leading the effort.

>> one fire is one fire too many. it's clear this is a guy who intends to do harm and we've got to do everything we can to protect each other. >> the firefighters union is offering a $10,000 reward. in san jose, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> developing news, a minor traffic accident on interstate 280 has led to a shooting in the bay view involving an off-duty san francisco police officer. the fender-bender occurred on the freeway, but the shooting happened when the officer and the other driver pulled into a gas station just after the midnight collision. police say the two got into a physical altercation at the chevron stationary jerrold avenue and bay shore boulevard. during the scuffle the unidentified female officer fired her gun, striking the other person in the lower body. police say the injury is not serious. the victim has refused medical treatment. this morning investigators plan to enter a palo alto house where two bodies were found friday following a fire.

flames broke out about 7:15 friday night in a home on the 900 block of embarcadero road. the structure is still not stable. crews have not been able to go inside yet. they plan to do that today. a next door neighbor said a man and his caretaker lived in the home. their names have not been released. this morning a man who was shot in san francisco's mission district is recovering from surgery. it was just after 5:30 last night when police received a report of a gunshot victim. he was found on shotwell street between 23rd and 24th and rushed to the hospital. bad weather is preventing a recovery team from reaching the site where a plane crash killed a bay area tech executive. and also members of his family. dale smith, his son and daughter-in-law, along with his daughter and her fiancee, all died after the plane crashed back in early december.

the wreckage was found friday, nearly a month and a half after the plane disappeared from radar in a remote part of idaho. smith's wife spoke with abc7 news. >> we have waited a long time to have some kind of closer and we kind of knew their chances were not good. this has allowed us to just identify exactly what happened and to move on and not be in that waiting place. >> dale smith's brother found the wreckage. he spoke with abc7 news by phone yesterday. >> you are just so happy that you found the plane, you know, and then after a couple of seconds that kind of disappears and the grief hits you because you found the plane. >> crews will meet tomorrow to consider options for reaching the remote crash site and recovering those bodies. the effort to create a park in memory of slain 13-year-old andy lopez will cost sonoma county somewhere between

$2 million and $3 million. andy lopez was shot to death october 22nd by a sonoma county sheriffs deputy while carrying a bb gun designed to look like an ak-47 assault rifle. a memorial is being built in the vacant lot where he died, but community members angered by the shooting want a park to be built there and named for him. a report by county officials on the cost of the park will be presented to the board of supervisors on tuesday. the nationwide flu outbreak continues to grow. officials have confirmed eleven bay area deaths due to the flu. two others in the county have been attributed to the virus but health officials are still waiting for test results to come back. this year the flu is not just affecting the very young and very old. more than 60% of patients are between 18 and 64. that's twice as many as last year. according to the cdc, 37 states highlighted here in red,

including california, are reporting widespread flu activity. in san rafael, medical center of marin sponsored a free flu clinic yesterday. the goal was to vaccinate as many people as possible in the community to help stop the virus from spreading. >> i try to encourage everyone to get a flu shot because the flu shot will help protect you against several various other flus, including the h1n1 virus which is the most virulent of the group and causing the most of the illness and deaths. >> according to the state health department, getting the flu shot can reduce your chances of getting the virus by 50% to 70%. the cdc has a flu shot finder map that has all the places near you that offer the vaccine, including prices and hours. we have a link on our website.

abc7 news.com un"see it on tv." >> more flooding following last week's arctic blast. we have incredible video. >> a fast-moving storm pounded the already dill luged east coast producing dangerous flooding conditions. take a look at this submerged s.u.v. in florida on what was once a road beside the canal. in new york residents of 20 homes evacuate bid bulldozer after the buffalo creek flooded the roadway. in nearby west seneca, upstate boats were sent to rescue people from water-filled streets. two people were rescued from a car stranded in floodwaters. the pair rescued to safety. the warming temperatures causing flooding in low-lying areas. in atlanta, georgia a 14-year-old girl trapped after strong winds sent a tree crashing through the roof of

this mobile home. >> a delicate situation where we had to keep the tree stable at all times so it didn't continue to fall on this young lady. she is in the hospital in serious condition. in north carolina up to 90 miles per hour winds causing condos under construction to collapse. the roof of this gun shop outside of charlotte caved in by the torrential downpours. i said we better get out of here, it looks like the walls are coming in. >> major ice jams along waterways pushing rivers over their banks and into streets and communities. caving in this philadelphia parking lot after 13,000 gallons of water rushed in. >> abc news. >> some much-needed rain was finally back in the bay area yesterday. this video was taken in san francisco's chinatown. the roads were also wet in marin with the north bay being most of the rain from oakland into

>> the body of former israeli prime minister ariel sharon will lie in state today. that's in jerusalem, israel's parliament. the public will be able to pay respects to the hard-charging

leader who died yesterday after being in a coma for years. sharon never regained consciousness after suffering a massive stroke back in 2006. he was 85 years old. his coffin arrived at the israeli parliament this morning. a state memorial is planned for tomorrow with leaders from all over the globe attending. vice president joe biden will represent the u.s. britain's tony blair will also attend. after the ceremony the military convoy will take him to his ranch for burial. >> knew this morning, babies were crying and their proud parents beaming at the vatican today where pope francis baptized 32 little ones inside the sistine chapel. one by one pope francis baptized the babies as their mothers held them. the sistine chapel is famous for it's ceiling frescoed by michelangelo. pope francis is the first latin american pontiff. also today he named his first batch of cardinals, 16 of 919

are less than 80 years old, making them young enough to elect the next pope. ♪ >> it is one of the most popular bands you probably never heard of. u-kiss, a korean boy band, has performed all over the world. last night was very special as one member returned to his roots in the bay area to fulfill a childhood dream. abc7 news reporter sergio has the story of kevin woo and his k-pop group u-kiss. >> reporter: through the piercing sound of screaming fans, u-kiss danced and sang their way through the first and only show in san francisco on this tour. ♪ >> and for lead performer kevin woo, this is a welcomed homecoming. >> i haven't lived in the bay area since i was 16, a freshman in high school.

abc7 news. you could soon be paying more for electricity, according to the san francisco chronicle. the california public utilities commission is expected to vote on a potential new pricing plan. if approved, you will be charged for when you use electricity rather than the amount of use. supporters hope it will encourage conservation. >> the niners are ready to take on the panthers in their nfc divisional playoff game this morning and the fans are ready, too. this picture is posted on facebook. check out this cute puppy. clearly a fan, as well. and we also want you to meet a special little girl. her family e-mailed this video to abc7 news. she was born deaf, but shortly after she had ear surgery she spoke her first words. listen. >> say touchdown. >> touchdown! touchdown! >> say touchdown.

we have the cloud cover that's pushing out of the region, but still some very dense fog toward the livermore valley and high pressure sits offshore. we have a huge swell for a high surf advisory today. temperatures are cooler this morning without the insulation of all the cloud cover. 48 in san jose. it's 48 half moon bay with low 40s redwood city. it's been chilly in the 30s for you and oakland has warmed up considerably. you see some of the hayer clouds from our east bay hills camera on top of vollmer peak. looking to be another fine day out there. 38 in napa, low 40s fairfield and livermore, one of the cooler locks with your fog this morning. but within the next hour it will be lifting and you, too, will get into a sunny morning and a warmer afternoon. and from sutro you can see the sunshine. a few clouds, sunny today. near record warmth by tuesday and wednesday. we are going to warm up as much as five to six degrees just tomorrow.

so today will be the coolest day. even though we are out of the 50s. we saw the 50s yesterday with the cloud cover and mist and drizzle. today we are sitting much cooler in napa. a few degrees cooler in mountain view and san carlos and half moon bay. we've been watching the northwest swell with buoys reporting 18 feet at 14 seconds so from the sonoma county coast all the way down through santa cruz, very dangerous conditions out there. but the surf there subside tonight and better conditions tomorrow. high pressure is building in once again and it's going to build in strong. as it does, we will have an offshore flow to contend with, and that's going to bring the fire danger up. already we are so bone dry and we are going to get some gusty winds. it's also going to boost the numbers to record warmth. not only tuesday and wednesday, through the end of the work week, as well. add in thursday. today normal high should be 56 and san francisco should see 59.

officials say they first became aware of the problem after local bird watchers noticed a lot of birds were dying and contacted the u.s. fish and wildlife service. >> that's the biggest thing, to get the birds out of the water. it is a waterborne disease so when the birds are in the water, it spreads the disease. >> the plan now is to drain the manmade pond and kill the bacteria. it's not a threat to humans, but officials have put up an orange barrier. it's around the area to keep people and dogs from a nearby dog park out of the water. >> a family is amazed, more than a little relieved their puppy survived nine days lost in sub freezing temperatures. >> oh, my goodness. i'm so thankful. just so, so thankful. >> a boxer puppy learned the hard way the dangers of running away from home. he jumped a fence and vanished in subzero weather while his owners were visiting family in

>> welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> carolyn, just 30 minutes away and the temperatures are climbing to the 50s in charlotte. a nice afternoon and plenty of sunshine. back home we still have some high clouds and dense fog in the livermore valley burke this will all clear as high pressure builds on in. upper 50s at our coast with a big northwesterly swell. to the low and mid-60s around the bay. we are talking fire danger this week. the accuweather seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you, lisa. neiman marcus has confirmed they were hit by cyber thieves last month and customers' credit card information was stolen. neiman marcus is not saying how many customers were affected but they said they are working with the secret service on the breach.

experts are speculating why it took receipt taylor a month to reveal what happened." >> it seems to me they didn't want to ruin their christmas shopping season. >> neiman marcus released a statement yesterday saying we have begun to contain the intrusion and have taken significant steps to further enhance information security. the news comes on the heels of target's revelation that nearly 110 million people were affected by a massive credit hack over the holidays. and that is nearly three times as many people as they originally estimated. some security experts believe the breaches at both retailers are part of the same scheme. >> knew this morning, the next best thing to santa is due to arrive at the international space station. here is a picture of the n.a.s.a. tv.

the rocket was privately launched on thursday in virginia. it contains 3,000 pounds of equipment and experiments provided by n.a.s.a. it's also carrying christmas presents for the space station residents. they are from their families. delivery is a bit late. east coast weather delayed the launch several times. now to the stunning images playing out over the mojave desert. virgin galactic now releasing pictures from their third test flight. it's the closest to space yet in a dream to find a way to take ordinary americans to new heights. here's abc news reporter mohamed. >> three, two, one. >> reporter: this is spaceship 2, the world's first commercial spaceliner. on a test flight more than 70,000 feet into the air, more thank double the height of a normal airplane. enough to see the roundness of the earth and the darkness of space above. >> we want this to be the beginning of a whole new. commercial aerospace travel. >> it's the brainchild of billionaire richard branson. hoping to launch the flight on

his company's virgin galactic later this year. >> we get this right, we believe there are literally millions that want to go into space the flights won't come cheap. at $200,000 a pop, nearly 7,000 people have already signed up, all for the chance to feel weight less for a while in outerspace. and a bit more weight less in the wallet, as well. abc news, new york. we often here praise for firefighters for their courage and bravery saving lives. this is a story about a firefighter with those same traits, but the most amazing thing about him is how he has persevered to make a come-back after two brushes with death. abc7 news reporter david loui has the story from menlo park. >> reporter: his face is familiar because you have seen harold on the news. he was among the first responders to new york on 9/11 leading a national mobile rescue unit. for more than 30 years he's been a firefighter and now a chief at menlo park fire protection

district. his life changed dramatically on may 11th last year when he fell off a ladder while pruning bushes in the backyard of his san jose home. >> one of the goals that set for myself was coming back to do this job. fortunately with the board's approval and a lot of people of that helped me along the way, you know, i'm here. >> that accident left him unable to walk and with limited use of his left hand. but he's back on the job after months of physical therapy. the toughest time was spending 66 days in the hospital. >> i had to relearn how to brush my teeth in the hospital, you know. who would ever thought you would have to do that. how to move around, how to feed myself. you know, so -- and then overcome, you know, the hardest part of this injury is overcoming both the physical and months of physical therapy. the toughest time was spending 66 days in the hospital. >> i had to relearn how to brush my teeth in the hospital, you know. who would ever thought you would have to do that. how to move around, how to feed myself. you know, so -- and then overcome, you know, the hardest

part of this injury is overcoming both the physical and the mental aspects of what will push you back every day if you let it. >> he also had a near fatal set-back on june 1st when a buildup of fluid caused his back sutures to rupture. >> it's serious. i could have died from that. obviously spinal meningitis, those things are what can do you in. >> but he fought back and proved he can still function effective as chief. >> he set his goals to come back. that's just his natural personality. >> retirement is not for him, he says, and he will soon be getting a special van with hand controls to allow him to drive. >> he will be easing back to work, working only part-time for the next few weeks and hopefully will be able to work full time. he's taking it one day at a time in menlo park, david loui, abc7 news. >> as you probably know, tourism is the number one industry for san francisco. it can also be a big headache for those who live around major tourist destinations. people who live around the crooked block of lombard street are now asking the city for help. >> they come from all over the world. >> venezuela. >> i'm from china. >> everyone wants to see lombard. known as the crookedest street in the world.

>> it's very historic and a landmark. >> this is a slow period during the off-season. residents say multiply this by hundreds to see what they experience every day during the spring and summer. >> taxis and buses and this is the first attraction that people come to san francisco, they come here. >> residents say in the last few years there has been an explosion of tourists. it's overwhelming. >> we are not equipped to be a tourist attraction like the golden gate bridge or union square. we have no facilities for the people, we have no security. >> san franciscans who live near the painted lady were able to ban tourists from their neighborhood. they are already off-limits on lombard and the streets that cross it, and further restrictions concern the president of extranomical tours. >> as the city becomes less tourist friendly, there will be less people that will want to come to san francisco.

>> supervisor mark feral is hoping to strike a balance. he's asking the city attorney to explore options like banning cars from lombard, limiting hours and even blocking off the street. >> we want to do the least restrictive thing that we can, the least restrictive regulations to make sure it doesn't change its current use or in any way detract from it as a tourist destination and also balance that with the neighborhood. >> they hope to have a compromise in place before the tourist season hits its stride later this year. >> still ahead on the abc7 sunday morning news is another popular bay area destination becoming too popular. why those who love muir woods trying to limit the number of people who go see it each year. and here is a live look from our roof cam. yesterday's drizzle long gone. we are heating up. lisa argen will have your [ female announcer ] pillsbury crescents on their own are fantastic.

comedians. san francisco organizers say pant less people will be riding bart and muni around 1:00 this around. what began as a practice cam joke has become an annual journey by people in bear legs all around the world. >> exposure to wildfire smoke could harm you. researchers discovered wildfire smoke could make your immune system more vulnerable to disease. young monkeys were used in that study. i would imagine there's fire danger here, as well, because no rain for a long, long time.

around in the livermore valley. low visibility there. the rest of us are experiencing partly cloudy skies. you can see the cloud cover. it was up in the north and continues to shift southward. that will be the trend throughout the day today, leaving us with plenty of sunshine. mt. tam still looking at some layered high clouds out there with temperatures not as cool as they could be with low 40s from redwood city, upper 40s san francisco. oakland drops into the upper 30s earlier today and half moon bay already at 50 degrees with some really big sur of being generated offshore. here's a look from our east bay hills camera on top of vollmer peak. more high clouds for you with temperatures still in the upper 30s in napa. better visibility. 45 in petaluma. chilly in the east bay with 41 in concord and livermore too with the cloud cover 42 degrees. so with our golden gate bridge in view, you can see the

sunshine all around the bay. that's going to stay with us today. the coolest day will be today as the high sits offshore. but it builds in, gets stronger and we are looking at near record warmth for about three days for the upcoming work week. that's with temperatures into the 70s. we've had waves offshore up to 20 feet. so very dangerous conditions from bodega bay and down through santa cruz. strong rip currents. by tonight things will be subsiding. here's a look at our water vapor imagery. the darker area here, that's the ridge that will build on in and allow for offshore flow. the gusty winds in suggests earn california through wednesday. up to 65 miles an hour. a little bit of a lull right now but temperatures in the 70s. northern half of the state looking cooler, but still well above average. 61 in fresno. 48 yosemite. temperatures in the south bay ranging from the low 60s. you really should be just in the

60s. 62 santa clara, 61 sunnyvale. on the peninsula about 60 in mill bay, san francisco about five degrees above average. 60 for you. low 60s from novato to napa. the east bay shores look for 64 in oakland. union city, you will have 62. you head inland more low 60s from pleasanton to the san ramon valley. looks like a spring-like forecast. we are talking offshore and on-shore winds. when you look at the seven-day outlook. you have to go, hmm, january? with temperatures climbing into the mid-60s tomorrow. we are looking at the stronger offshore flow tuesday, wednesday, thursday. 15 to maybe 20 degrees above average. and we will look for a little bit of cooling still. no rain even into next week. we are looking further out to see whatever we can see to look promising and it's not looking promising. >> nothing in the computer models as this point? >> nothing. >> all right. thank you, lisa.
