>> reporter: good morning, robin. there are many unanswered questions this morning. passengers say they knew something went terribly wrong when they felt the pilot slam on the brakes. >> we landed. and we kind of stopped abruptly. >> reporter: this morning pass jers on on the southwest plane describe the turbulent landing. a flight packed with 124 passengers took off from chicago's midway airport and was supposed to land at branson airport in missouri. instead, it landed eight miles away at taney county airport. seen in this photo. the runway about half the length of branson's. so short it reportedly forced the pilot to slam on the brakes, coming to a halt just 500 feet from a steep cliff over a roadway. >> we're safe and sound here. >> reporter: just moments after the precarious landing, the pilot tries to calm passengers' nerves. >> people know we're here. and we'll be taking care of you just as soon as we can. thanks again for your patience. again, apologize.

>> reporter: the incident similar to when this plane landed at a tiny airport in wichita, kansas. much smaller than its intended destination mcconnell air force base. it is also the latest in a string of hiccups for southwest. in november, a southwest flight from tampa to raleigh dropped 10,000 feet due to a cabin pressurization problem, making some passengers sick. and in july, at new york city's laguardia airport, passengers were horrified when a southwest flight landed nose first, setting off sparks and panic. as for sunday's debacle, southwest called the landing uneventful overnight. noting that all customers and crew are safe. still the faa and the ntsb are now investigating. making the situation worse, the airport where the plane landed, it is so small, it doesn't have the fire and rescue equipment needed to respond to a commercial plane crash. those passenger, george, as you might imagine, breathing a sigh of relief this morning. george?

>> thanks very much, alex. >> let's bring in colonel steven ganyard. steve, we just heard from alex, no emergency equipment at this airport. just re-enforces how bad this incident could have been. >> this is very scary, george. this is a runway that is half the distance that the crew expected to be landing on. it's made of asphalt, not concrete. it has sharp dropoffs at either end. it could have been catastrophic if say there had been weather. if the runway was wet, or if the crew had come in faster than anticipated. >> is there a simple explanation for how something like this could have happened? >> no simple explanation. it's just hard to understand how could something like this happen. this airplane has so much technology. it can put this crew within eight feet of any point on the earth. why they were not using it, why it wasn't employed here, why they took visual cues and got pulled off to some airport that wasn't there's is just very, very hard to understand. >> not the first incident for southwest. do they need a safety review? >> not just southwest. go back to the wichita incident.

of water surrounded her car. up to ten feet of water in west seneca, new york. families there carried out by bulldozers. and by daybreak, homes left water logged. >> two floors all the way to the top. the cars are underwater. >> reporter: the water wasn't rising, but freezing overnight in chicago, where three people plunged into the icy chicago river, leaving one dead and another in critical condition. the third person is still missing. a different sort of ice issue in maine. this was the scene from inside a passenger jet at bane gore international airport where a plane slipped right off the runway. winds also a problem. >> oh, no, look at that! >> reporter: record-breaking gusts in raleigh, north carolina, this weekend, blowing down what was to be a brand-new home, like a house of cards. 86-mile-per-hour wind gusts.

hurling trees onto homes. one woman died after being struck by a fallen tree limb. another woman nearly electrocuted. >> she got caught up at that transformer. if she was there in a few seconds, she would have been electrocuted. >> reporter: here in pennsylvania, this isn't snow, this is ice that hasn't melted yet. and up until last night, the delaware river was completely frozen over. the good news, no flooding or ice jams expected over the next week. robin? >> all right, gio. ginger will have more later. now the golden globes. the big headlines from hollywood. u. new insecurity for millions of americans using credit and debit cards. recent cyberattacking is more widespread than thought. we know that 70 million target customers have been compromised. now, reuters is reporting three more chains were victimized. they have not been publicly disclosed yet. but the latest hacking at neiman marcus jeopardized up to 1

million accounts. whether you pay cash or credit, two mainstays of the family budget getting more expensive. first, gas prices have now risen to their highest level in three months, partly because of the increasing costs of crude oil. while at the supermarket, beef prices just hit a record high, thanks to winter storms and the continuing western drought. and some 300,000 people in west virginia are facing now a fifth day without tap water after a chemical spill contaminated the water supply. it's unclear when the water will be safe. tests show some improvement, but schools and businesses do remain closed. meanwhile, overseas, a milestone in the nuclear standoff with iran. they've now agreed to open their nuclear facilities to daily inspection beginning next week.

yankee slugger, describes a litany of drugs he says he claims he gave rodriguez. >> testosterone. insulin growth factor one. human growth hormone. and, some -- different forms of peptides. >> reporter: in the interview, bosh makes stunning claims about how far a-rod would go in his alleged drug use. >> we ended up drawing the blood in the bathroom of a restaurant/bar/club in the bathroom stall. >> reporter: he shared text messages allegedly sent from a-rod, including this one which reads, feel good, big day tomorrow, what do you have? >> see ya, there it is! number 600! >> reporter: but his attorney, joe tacopina says the text messages were not about drugs. he's adamant that the star passed major league baseball's blind drug tests given to him over the years. >> he's not once failed a drug test. >> reporter: but bosh said that was easy to do. >> it was almost cakewalk.

after they say local police got it wrong. >> i never for once believed that my mother committed suicide. >> reporter: four years ago, joe ann disappeared after leaving a church in michigan. her body discovered more than two months later floating in the detroit river. police ruled the death a suicide, claiming the 55-year-old drowned. michelle says her mother was concerned someone was following her. >> there are many clues that show foul play involved. >> reporter: frustrated by what she believes is a botched police job, michelle hired a private investigators. >> in short, i think this was a murder. >> reporter: the investigator found new evidence, among those, her mother's shoes. other than clay from the river, she says they were still in impeccable condition, consistent with her being carried and not consistent with the police theory that she walked over two concrete ledges and metal rods before walking into that rocky river. >> this is what they released to

us. >> reporter: she also claims her mother's purse had rips in it that weren't there the morning before she appeared. an autopsy showed bruises on her upper left arm, the arm where she carried her purse. her car was found in a different parking spot from where she originally parked. local police say they're convinced it is a suicide, though they say they're willing to reopen the case with enough new evidence. >> it would take substantial evidence, like the identity of a killer. >> that's myself, michelle here. >> reporter: still, michael and michelle won't stop fighting. >> we will not rest until the killers are found. >> reporter: the most important piece of evidence they say is their mom just wasn't the type of person to commit suicide. they also say that she gassed up her car the same day she disappeared. they wonder why a woman who intended to take her own life would bother to do that. >> lot of questions. thanks very much.
