good evening and thanks for joining us. some of this country's most common professions, from trucking to nursing, can also be its most dangerous because they can make you the fattest. they involve little exercise, lots of stress, and long hours of sitting. and for the people you're about to meet it meant major weight gain. until their bosses stepped in with an unusual offer. cash to slim down. here's abc's ryan owens.

>> reporter: truckers haul millions of tons across this country every day. maybe it's no surprise they put on a few along the way. >> well, lots of times i do up to 60, 70 hours in a week. >> reporter: troy robbins is typical. he drives up to 700 miles a day, spends up to 14 hours every day sitting right here. and when he stops at a truck stop, his dining choices range from grease to greasier with a side of sugar. before long the 47-year-old weighed nearly 500 pounds. and the prospect of losing it seemed as grim as the selection back at the truck stop. he has plenty of company. one study found a whopping 86% of this nation's 3.2 million truck drivers are overweight or obese. trucking is always near the top of the list of jobs that make people fat. so is manufacturing and clerical. all of that time sitting. but here's one that might

surprise you. health care workers. but in of all places milwaukee, wisconsin, home of brauts and beer, where trans fats are nothing short of an essential food group, they're trying to do something about it. milwaukee is also home to aurora health care, wisconsin's largest private employer. >> oh, my goodness. >> reporter: marianne scherer works as a mid-wife at aurora's downtown hospital. >> we have a lot of long hour shifts, a lot of erratic shifts, and i think it's a high stress job. >> reporter: the one-time fitness zrushlth says the stress of teaching nurses all day -- >> controlled substance. >> reporter: -- and delivering babies all night -- >> all right. i'm going to give you a hand. >> reporter: -- has taken a toll on her waistline. >> p not a lot of salads at 3:00 a.m.? >> no. salads aren't delicious at 3 in the morning. pasta, donuts, candy incredibly delicious at 3:00 in the morning.

>> reporter: but marianne came one a competition. marianne and four other delivery nurses and mid-wives formed the team, the birthing babes. they competed with 200 other teams from aurora to see who could lose the most weight. the winning team could get $10,000. which provided enough motivation to get the birthing babes to power-walk along milwaukee's frigid lakefront. >> before it was hey, let's go out for lunch, let's go, you know, out for dinner. and now it's hey, you want to get together and go for a walk? let's go to zumba. >> reporter: which would have sounded crazy a year ago. >> oh, absolutely. i'd be like zumba, are you out of your mind? >> you don't have to go to the jm. you go to the park. you walk the hills. you take a bike ride. you can do it if you watch what you put in your mouth. >> reporter: their employer helped with that too. aurora opened dining options that look more like a health food store than a hospital cafeteria. a tuscan kale salad in wisconsin? yes. and it's been a big hit.

the birthing babes' motivation to keep moving? they want the 10 grand for a trip to hawaii. >> i've been on about, i don't know, 15 diets in the last nine years since i had my kids. and it was all about my diet. well, now it's about my family, my diet buddy's diet. and it's not only about me. it's about them. if i don't meet my goal, i'm disappointing everybody else in our group. >> and it's great to be able to text somebody and say oh, god, i really want a donut right now and for them to say go work out or drink some water or eat some carrot sticks, or you can do this, until that craving passes. >> reporter: i mean, it sounds cheesy, but it works, right? >> it does. >> that's old school. jordan. >> reporter: marianne says as health care workers they have an additional motivation. >> our image to our patients. look what we've fallen down to. we're not perfect. we don't eat great. but there's a way you can do it. even if you're as busy as we are. >> reporter: remember troy?

he had a unique incentive to hit the gym. something more valuable than money. after his wife died of cancer, his sons confronted him. >> especially my 13-year-old. he's the one that said "dad, do it." you've got to get healthy. to hear it come from him i guess is what motivated him to get it done. >> reporter: troy promised he would, even though as a single dad he needed his sedentary job more than ever. >> your job is to sit on your butt for 11 to 14 hours every single day. >> yes. every day. >> reporter: enter bob perry. >> also working your back. >> reporter: a sort of fitness guru for the long haul trucker. he taught troy to use his big rig as a gym. from walking laps around it to stair steps on the step rail. >> use your legs to push out. >> reporter: to push-ups on the side. >> inhale at the easiest point and exhale at the point of -- >> reporter: to squats off the grill. >> this is a tough gig. this is not easy pop so they're not lazy.

it's just they've never paid attention to bringing a solution. that's what this is all about. >> reporter: bob's initiative is called rolling strong. along with the big rig gym he's designed a workout system for inside the truck. he sold more than 2,000 of these band systems for $70 a pop. they allow truckers to work out in the comfort of the cab, even in nasty weather. >> good job. >> reporter: how much of this is about making it convenient for them? >> it's all about it. it's all about it. >> reporter: bob's company has also opened fitness centers at four truck stops and is working with them to offer healthier options. fewer corn dogs and donuts. >> is there a culture out there that says wait a minute, this doesn't look right to have a guy working out around his truck or this doesn't feel right to have healthy things at the truck stop? is there a culture? >> absolutely. and this is what this is about. it's a shift in the culture. and it's not easy. they realize they have to make a change and they want to make a change and we're just trying to make it more accessible. >> reporter: it's working. using his truck as a gym and eating better have helped him

lose 85 pounds for his teenage son. and he's not done yet. his message to those struggling with weight? >> take 30 minutes. it's not that hard to take 30 minutes out of your schedule. i know if i can do it anybody can do that. >> reporter: back in milwaukee the birthing babes did it. they lost 88 pounds. they didn't win the 10 grand because so many of their co-workers lost even more weight. during the eight months of the competition aurora's 30,000 employees lost a total of 20 tons. the nurses say anyone can do it. >> just get moving. get off your butt and get moving. >> reporter: i'm ryan owens for "nightline" in milwaukee. >> that's what i call a good incentive pay program. thanks, ryan. next, we join the surprising new star of the extreme motocross world as she gets ready to perform in her biggest gig yet. and some say jennifer

when you think of extreme sports and motorcycles, you may not immediately imagine women doing the jumps and wheelies. well, you're about to meet one. and if there are any glass ceilings above her, they'll be broken for sure. we're there as she attempts her most daring stunt ever. here's abc's rena ninan.

>> she's got abs of steel. >> when i was younger in my teens i didn't really work out. >> reporter: and the workouts she does daily are for a different kind of pageant. >> will you please welcome jolene van vugt! >> she's awesome. >> she's tough zplp she. >> she's an inspiration. >> reporter: backstage at madison square garden this star performer gets ready for her act. >> they take care of us. >> reporter: in front of 15,000 screaming fans. but what jolene van vugt is about to do few men would dare. jolene is a rising name in the testosterone-fueled world of extreme motocross, an adrenaline-pumping sport known for outrageous stunts, where every air-bending flight risks disaster.

jolene is part of "nitro circus live," joining 40 other extreme athletes on a nationwide tour performing these stunts on motorcycles, bikes, and whatever else they can ride on. >> you're really like the only girl in an all boys club. >> when i sort of broke into the "nitro circus" there was no girls. not that they didn't want to include them. they just really could never find one that could hang with them. and i gave it a go and i was able to complete it and became the first woman in the world to backflip a full-size motorcycle. >> reporter: with her daredevil tricks, utter fearlessness, and hard to ignore good looks, 33-year-old jolene is a triple threat in this competitive arena. >> and i want to backflip. >> you heard her, new york city! >> reporter: at stake -- nothing less than her life. >> it's dangerous, and it's not to be taken lightly. i definitely want to go out there and be focused. >> reporter: motocross star travis pastrana is the show's creator.

>> what would you say is the one thing about nitro circus that most people maybe don't know? >> most people just think that everyone's crazy here. which you know, you have to be willing to take that shot. and the risk and reward is different for everybody. >> reporter: it's a sport that constantly pushes the limit. just this weekend in texas bmx stunt rider matt olson risked his life, riding his bike over this brand new fort worth bridge. >> it was a pretty amazing feeling to be up there that high. >> reporter: on the first stop of jolene's tour, 27-year-old bruce cook was critically injured after attempting this stunt. >> is it worth the risk? >> it was really tough. our good friend bruce. it was his first nitro circus trick. he was doing a trick bigger than anyone else in the world hfr done. there's a lot of responsibility for myself especially and for everyone around us to say what is too much? would the crowd have noticed that that trick was bigger than everything else? probably. but there's a lot of people that just come for the show, and they

wouldn't -- you have to stay within the realms of safety. >> reporter: jolene knows the risks. but for her this is a lifelong passion. >> i started riding when i was 11. i came by motocross and dirt bikes through my father. he has had a love for motorcycles his entire life. one of my favorite photos is with my dad on his street bike on the road and i'm six months just sitting there riding -- >> six months? >> yeah. >> six months riding on your dad's motor bike? >> yeah. and i was just really intrigued. i wanted to also participate. it looked like a lot of fun. it wasn't a lot of girls back then, especially my age. i was only 11 and there was two girls in all of pretty much canada that were riding at that time. >> reporter: what does your mom think about this? >> my mom is very supportive, but she does have very high blood pressure. >> reporter: though extreme stunts have earned her a spot on the big screen. anne hathaway's stunt double in "the dark knight rises." >> and if you look ahead, that's

our -- >> oh, there's the motor home. the nitro circus live motor home. my brother actually drives that. >> yeah. there it is. >> have you had any serious injuries? >> i definitely have. i've spent my fair share of time in the hospitals and having different types of surgeries. >> what have you had broken? >> there's a lot. i mean, the list is quite long. but one of the things i don't -- it's kind of a superstition i guess but i really don't like to talk about the specific injury. >> fair enough. it's just a few hours before showtime. i don't want "nightline" to be blamed for any sort of problems. >> reporter: backstage the tour director gives some final advice. >> we all know that tonight is probably the biggest "nitro circus live" ever. to be in new york city, madison square garden, and have it sold out is a big deal for all of us. thank you guys for putting on such a great show that people want to come see it.

>> one, two, three -- nitro! >> reporter: it's showtime. in front of a sold-out crowd jolene wants to give the performance of a lifetime. >> do you have to like get yourself psyched up and ready? >> yep. most definitely. dirt bikes, stunts, tricks, anything like that is very mental also. you have to really believe that it's something you can do and that you're capable and, you know, all your training is finally going to work. you've put in the work. you've just got to go out there and trust your body is going to remember everything you taught it. and you just have to be very confident. >> the toughest woman on the planet, jolene van vugt! >> reporter: at first jolene performs this backflip. >> new york city backflip! >> start making some noise if you want to see -- >> reporter: next she glides down this 50-foot ramp in a barbie car.

she nails both stunts. >> i don't think i would even go sledding down that ramp, it's so terrifying to me. >> and i understand that. this is obviously my world. it's something i was raised into and have been around my entire life and ventured through all the steps and stages. so this is my comfort zone. not the average person's comfort zone. >> no, it's definitely not. >> we're coming up on the end of the show, and so far it's been an amazing show here at madison square garden. i don't think we could ask for anything better. i had a great performance myself. my flip was awesome. my barbie car stuff went great. >> reporter: and now it's on to the next city for the only woman making the big jump. for "nightline" i'm reena ninan in new york. >> wow. she is something. reena ninan, thank you. next, "american hustle" and "12 years a slave" both won big at the golden globes last night and soon they could be facing off at the oscars.

on tonight's "feed frenzy" the bump the golden globes can offer oscar contenders, and baby bumps that may not be there by that time. it's no secret that hollywood looks to the golden globes for clues about who's getting the biggest oscar buzz. from cate blanchett to matthew mcconaughey. >> all right, all right, all right. >> things are looking up after last night's win. but a golden globe nod doesn't always bring an oscar statuette. certain golden globe favorites have yet to win a single one. could this year finally be it for perennial oscar nominees leonardo dicaprio and amy adams? >> oh, you guys, thank you so much. >> reporter: other guests got their golden glow a different way. the ceremony was bumping, with
