stories. we are looking at a wildfire burning out of control along the san mateo county coast. this began just before 9:00 south of half moon bay. good evening, everyone. i'm carolyn johnson. >> i'm dan ashley. first, breaking news in the search for a serial arsonist in the south bay. they arrested a suspect accused of setting a dozen fires in the past week. >> ama dates is live in san jose with breaking details. ama? >> dan and carolyn, that person is suspected of setting 13 fires. you can see some of the damage in the video we shot. homes, condos and a portable building behind a church that was set on fire last week. it was a rash of arsons and as you said tonight, the san jose police department has

confirmed that the department's covert response unit arrested a man shortly after 8:00 in connection with the arsons. a suspect will be book eld into the santa clara county jail. the search intensified over the weekend. abc7 news obtained this surveillance video of a man walking in the neighborhood where a fire was set. and then the fire department released the sketch. right now they are not releasing the suspect's name or the circumstances surrounding the arrest tonight. right now they are still doing investigations and following up and talking to people to make sure they do have the right person in custody. we will of course have all of the latest on twitter at abc7 news bay area. you can get the latest as well from the abc7 morning news. in san jose, ama dates, abc7 news. >> thank you. more breaking news in san mateo county where fire crews are battling the wildfire that struck down part of highway 84. it is burning south of half moon bay near san graw gore

yow. we want to take you over the scene. alan wang is near that area and he is live with the latest. >> you can see the glow of the fire over my should expert path it took as it climbed up the mountain side. you can see the red flashing lights over there. they belong to the fire engine crews that raced up the hill to head off the flames. it looks like they may have slowed it down. let me show you what it looked like an hour ago. the fire broke out about 8:45 near the intersection of highway 84 and stage road, not far from the san gregorio general store. cal fire said it spread quickly into the eucalyptus trees and raced up the mountain side threatening homes on the other side of the ridge. 10 homes were evacuated and right now cal fire says it has zero percent containment. let's go live to sky 7hd where you can see the pictures and the good news is the wind has died down a lot and the flames

have not been able to spread quickly as you can see from sky 7. the flames are starting to die out, but all it takes is for the wind to pick up. we can be dealing with an entirely different situation. right now the priority is to get containment around this fire. reporting live from san gregorio south of half moon bay, alan wang, abc7 news. >> thank you. our reporting continues on twitter. you can follow us there at abc7 news bay area. >> the record heat is not helping matters either. still high fire danger out there. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with a look at today's records and live doppler 7hd. sandhya? >> dan, let's check out live doppler 7hd and look at the records and the fire conditions in san gregorio. right now clear skies across the bay area. as far as the fire line is concerned, the closest site is 45 degrees. this is where the fire is burning in san gregorio. relative humidity has been creeping up. the wind is calm and this area

is in a rugged part of the bay air. that will make it tough to fight the fire and the fire creates the winds and that is why it may be gusty. red flag warning for our hills until thursday morning. that's tomorrow morning. still gusty in the hills and the humidity is running low. it has been extremely dry and we had another record setting day. this is the second time record for sfo, 73 there. look at some of the other records here. all time record also for the entire month of january in salinas where it was 83 degrees. 82 in santa cruz and monterey and we are not done with the records, but i do have a glimmer of hope. the latest computer models hinting with rain. i will be back in a few minutes. carolyn? >> thank you. a severe water shortage is forcing severe action. they are well below normal levels because of the drought so tomorrow water officials

will tap one of their stand by reservoirs, phoenix lake. it is something that hasn't been done for years. john alston is live with more. >> some residents are limiting water use by not providing glasses because of the possibility of water rationing looming in the coming months. reservoir levels are at half capacity and no rain in sight. >> you won't find the water glasses already on the tables at san rafael joe's. customers have to ask if they want water with their meal. >> i try to cut down a little bit. i take shorter showers, but i drink a lot of water. >> they decided to stop the automatic water servings a week ago and they have seen a slight drop in the water requests. >> our understanding is it requires about seven glasses of water for every glass of water you serve in order to clean the glass and the water you are served. it just makes sense of the

water shortage. >> it has gotten so serious that beginning tomorrow the marin municipal water district will start pumping water out of phoenix lake on mount tam. one of the two reserve reservoirs. it will drop 20 feet over the next month. >> we did use it briefly when we had a short dry spell, but we haven't used it as water supply for about 20 years. >> if the water levels don't improve by april they will do something they haven't done since 1991, impose rationing. >> it is something we are looking at, but we haven't made a decision at this point. >> i don't think it is going to hurt anybody if they need to ration. i think people should ration because we use water like crazy. >> for now they are asking for voluntary conservation. john alston, abc7 news. >> tonight another northern california town faces a major water emergency. will it in -- they are down to just 100 days left in terms of a supply of water.

they rely of surface water that flows into the reservoir. normally the dirt you see here would be under 40 feet of water. it is that bad. the town is rationing water, 150 gallons per home, per day. the flu killed three more people in the bay area. the total number of cases is now 21. today napa county confirmed its first flu death. a third in sonoma county. h1n1, swine flu, appears to be the predominant strain this season. the best way to protect yourself is by getting a flu shot and washing your hands frequently. the centers for disease control and prevention has information on where you can still get a flu shot. we posted a link at abc7news.com and look under see it on tv. a fire raced through a home and jumped to the house next door. a viewer cap -- captured the video with a cell phone. the firefighters tell us the popping sounds are propane

tanks exploding. it appears a portable heater ignited propane in one of the tanks. they gutted much of the house and damaged the adjoining house which again is on palo alto on fernando avenue. >> concord police need your help to find two teenagers suspected of shooting a man outside a fast food outlet. they believe they attacked the victim outside a wendy's on monument boulevard. sky 7hd flew overhead shortly after police responded to the scene. officers say the suspect got into an argument with the victim in the restaurant and the victim suffered serious wounds. and new at 11:00, three people were shot and wounded tonight in san francisco's western edition. it happened near 7:00 near fill more and mcallister street. all of the victims are expected to survive. so far no word on a motive or any arrests. ac transit is launching an investigation into an incident caught on tape showing a bus driver denying access to a

cal fear has evacuated 10 homes. no injuries to report at this time. and the other major breaking news we are following tonight, there has been an arrest a in the seriel arson case. police tell us they will not released information until tomorrow. but the key is they have made an arrest a and the person they believe is responsible. video just released by attorneys for some of the asiana crash victims shows how one young passenger survived the impact only to be run over by two san francisco fire trucks. the two video capture the chaos moments after impact at san francisco international. a spotter sees the 16-year-old and alerts one of the first trucks to arrive. but emergency responders failed to assess ye and communicate her location to command or even mark her location. >> not one of the firefighters took her pulse. not one of the firefighters checked if she was breathing. she was covered by foam and

run over by two different trucks. >> the fire chief joanne hayes white is on vacation and her spokeswoman says the chief wouldn't comment anyway with the federal investigation still underway. a warning about dating websites. a growing number of scam artists are using them to find their victims. the santa clara county district attorney's office says in a recent case a man who lives out of the country met a 66-year-old woman on christian mingle.com and conned her out of half a million dollars. the d.a. says don't loan or invest money with somebody you know from a website. there are concerns tonight about a popular smartphone app. a new report says the starbucks mobile app leaves customers open to attack. they say it is in plain text which means a hacker could easily recover the pass word. starbucks talks about the vulnerable, but doesn't admit to the hack.

the exploratorium camera looking at the financial district and it is clear. 58 in san francisco and 49 in oakland a and in san jose. half moon bay has just gone up. it was 66 degrees, unbelievable. now it is showing 70 degrees. the wind is definitely influencing half moon bay. that might have been a typo. that's an automatic gauge there at the airport. san francisco clear skies and it is definitely getting chilly where the wind isn't really blowing. 38 in santa rosa and 37 petaluma. low to mid40s, concord and livermore here is a view from the emeryville camera. clear skies and no fog and you can clearly see across the bay. red flag warning in the hills through tomorrow morning. record highs expected for the third straight day tomorrow. it is going to be dry for the holiday weekend. beyond that changes are coming. here is the deal. people know, we know, high pressure, strong blocking ridge has been preventing the rain from getting to california, the bay area, no snow in the sierra.

what is going on? take a look at the water temperature here across the pacific. this water temperature, the sea surface temperature is actually unusually warm for this time of year. that's actually pushing the jet stream and the big ridge of high pressure north. which is why the temperatures are running so mild. 60 degrees down south. 57 and 56 just off our coast in the monterey bay coast. that's one of the explanations climatologists at the nasa jet propulsion laboratory and the climatologists are actually discussing. we will have to stay tuned for that. interesting. tomorrow morning chilly start. low 30s in the north bay valleys. most other areas like the coast, mild, temperatures in the 50s, 40s across the rest of the bay area of the clear skies tomorrow afternoon. it will be a warm one. short sleeve weather in gilroy. record weather expected. 76, 78 in santa cruz. it is beach weather. there should be a record there. same thing for mountain view

on the peninsula, 72 san mateo and it is warm enough to hit the coast. 71 down down san francisco and 70 daly city and sunset district. mid70s for santa rosa and 73 napa in the east bay. oakland, likely a record, 73 and same for hayward. inland spots, it is unusually warm. 73 livermore and san ramon. accu-weather seven-day forecast featuring more 70s on friday, but the temperatures will start to come down a little bit. president's day -- or martin luther king, junior day mid60s to low 70s and then we bring in the clouds and cool off the temperatures. a slight chance of rain on wednesday. have i to pause there. a chance of rain. >> that's a week away. >> i know it is one computer model, but i'm going to keep that hope up. >> thanks, sandhya. >> larry suggests you call in for more tanning.
