good morning, i'm marci gonzalez in for diana perez. >> i'm john muller. we begin with breaking news from indiana. police in elkhart say a gunman walked into a martin's grocery store. two were killed. one an employee, another a customer in her 40s. >> the suspect was pointing his gun at a second employee. they shot the gunman dead. now trying to figure out what led to the shooting. >> it's a huge crime scene. the area where the shootings happened in the store are basically from one end of the store to the next. there were several, several rounds fired in there. both from police and from the suspect. >> and police say they don't know if the gunman knew any of his victims. they say he was about 20 years old and lived in the neighborhood. our other major story is the latest scandal involving the nation's nuclear forces. >> more than three dozen launch officers have been relieved of

duty for cheating on a test or covering it up. it's a major embarrassment for the air force. >> abc's mary bruce has been following the story overnight. she joins us from washington. mary. >> reporter: good morning, well, this is just the latest in a series of disturbing incidents by the officers who live and work within a hair trigger of the nation's nuclear arsenal. they are responsible for the world's most dangerous weapons. the u.s. air force nuclear command. now rocked by a cheating scandal. nearly three dozen officers at malmstrom caught sharing answers for a recertification test, possibly the largest breach of integrity in the force. >> this is absolutely unacceptable behavior and it is completely contrary to our core values in the air force. >> reporter: 4 officers have been charged, removed from their posts. their clearances suspended. military officials say some of them texted answers back and forth. others knew about the cheating but did nothing to stop it. >> regardless of an airman's

level of participation, cheating or tolerating others who cheat runs counter to everything we believe in as a service. >> reporter: now all 600 officers in the nation's melo launch program are being retested. >> there is no room for mistakes with nuclear weapons. >> reporter: the cheating was uncovered during a separate drug investigation. it's just the latest in a string of embarrassing controversies. a top commander was fired last october after allegedly being drunk at a conference in moscow. four officers were also disciplined last year for falling asleep on the job. despite the troubling pattern the air force maintains confidence in its nuclear force. >> i want you to know that this was a failure of some of our airmen. it was not a failure of the nuclear mission. >> now, all of the nation's melo crew members are expected to retake that proficiency test by the end of today and some of the nation's top air force officials eager to show they're taking action will pay a permanent visit to the launch sites next week.

john and marci. >> mary bruce, thank you. classes resume at the new mexico middle school where two students were shot. the 12-year-old suspect apparently chose his victims at random much the shooting lasted only ten seconds before a social studies teacher convinced that boy to drop his weapon. we are hearing what it was like inside the school from 911 tapes. >> i'm sorry. i'm in a classroom. i'm trying to be quiet because i don't know if they're still in the hall. >> where is she shot at? >> from the right arm and armpit, chest. she says she's having trouble breathing. >> reporter: the shooting suspect brought the sawed off shotgun from his parent's home. an arsonist terrorizing california may be behind bars. he was arrested after a home owner released this surveillance video of the arsonist in action. you can see a man setting fire to some wooden furniture on a porch. he then much whatted the fire burn for about 20 minutes. more than a dozen fires were deliberately set over a six-day period.

the family of captured u.s. army sergeant bowe bergdahl is again pleading for his release after seeing a new video of him. u.s. officials say they believe the video was taken within the last month showing that the soldier is alive after nearly five years of captivity but says he looks to be in much worse health than in previous videos. >> the navy pilot in critical condition after he ejected from his jet over the atlantic ocean. the pilot was plucked from the 42-degree water by a nearby fishing boat before being hoisted into a helicopter. the jet was on a training mission flying at 30,000 feet off the coast of virginia. the helicopter crashed into the same area killing three service members last week. the parents of a teenager run over last year in the asiana crash are suing the city of san francisco. 16-year-old ye meng yuan survived when she was thrown from the plane but was killed after being hit by two fire trucks. this video from a firefighter's helmet camera showing several first responders trying to

direct trucks away from the girl but no one checked to see if she was alive. survivors of what is known as the miracle on the hudson gathered in new york to mark five years since the day that changed all their lives. they toasted the heroism of captain sully sullenberger when that flock of geese disaged the engine. sullenberger guided that plane to an extraordinary emergency landing in the hudson river. >> it was a magical moment. we had a chance to celebrate together the wonderful outcome. >> it saved all 155 people on board. sullenberger says even if one had died there would not have been a single celebration. another earthquake shook an area around los angeles. the 3.8 quake was west of corona before midnight. this comes after a magnitude 4.4 earthquake jolted the inland region about 50 miles east of l.a. yesterday. merchandise fell from store

shelf, but there was no major damage. tomorrow marks 20 years since the devastating north ridge earthquake. the other threat to california this morning, brush fires after flames destroyed several homes and closed in on million dollar mansions. overnight, crews battled this fire in northern california. south of house moon bay. it burned one building. powerful winds are beginning to die down but the fire danger remains very high with red flag warnings still in effect. and 2013 was the driest year on record in california and today, those dry conditions will extend to most of the west. windy with snow across the northern plains upper midwest and great lakes. a mix of rain and snow from southern illinois to the ohio valley. scattered showe eed snow shower. >> mostly 40s along the east coast, 30s to the midwest. 50s in the pacific northwest and l.a. warming up to 84 degrees. well, players at the australian open sure would love those

her blood alcohol content was more than three times the legal limit. she was also charged with illegal possession of prescription drugs. >> it's amazing. they should know better. they know what the rules are. and i feel sorry for the passengers that were unnecessarily delayed and had to be rebooked on other flights. >> and the flight in detroit eventually took off two hours late. she was also charged with illegal possession of prescription drugs. well, a cruise ship changed course in order to rescue eight people stuck on board a sinking sailboat in the middle of the atlantic ocean. it went nearly 200 miles out of its way to pick up the stranded sailors. the mission was a success. the cruise ship is back on track. we're now hearing from a utah snowmobiler who was buried by an avalanche and lived to tell about it. 28 matt morgan broke both of his legs and his arm during saturday's ordeal. luckily, he was riding with friends who saw him disappear beneath the snow.

morgan says he was in a canyon when he saw the snow break loose. >> i remember seeing the snow come down both sides of me and my peripheral vision. i remember seeing the snow come down and i felt my snowmobile become very unstable. >> morgan wasn't breathing when he was dug out of the snow obviously. he was revived and he admits that he and the others were riding in a high avalanche danger area when it happened. some athletes in the news starting with skier linsey von. she posted this picture on social media resting with her dog after having what she had successful surgery on her right knee. >> she's had a knee ligament reconstructed. that was injured in a series of incidents that left her unable to ski at next month's olympics. tom brady to talk about of the new england patriots. he sat out of practice yesterday as he battled some sort of illness. >> they are getting ready for sunday's afc championship game

good thursday morning to you. it's 4:28. i'm eric thomas. we begin with developing news in san mateo county. firefighters got the upper hand on a brush fire and contained it early this this morning. the fire broke out shortly before 9:00 in a rural part of the county in san gregorio. it quickly spread into eucalyptus trees. ten homes were evacuated. the winds were very low and the flames were not able to pick up. firefighters had the four acre blaze an tand around 1:00 this morning and no structures burned. sure looks like october out

highway 4, you are clear. accident free and 101 heading between san rafael into san francisco will take you 16 minutes. the tolls are quiet. we're seeing a few cars make being their way in that westbound direction in the cash paying lanes a couple of cars back. 4:30. develops news, san jose police say they arrested a suspect in a string of more than a dozen arson fires set within days of each other. officials say the department as covert department arrested a man shortly after 8:00 last night. police are not releasing the suspect as name or any other identifying information. they are holding a news conference this morning at 10:00 to provide more details. we'll have a live report at the top of the hour. breaking news overnight a teen is fighting for his life in the burn unit of a bay area hospital following a bizarre accident in the parking lot of an
