making news in america this morning, fighting the fire. homes destroyed. people evacuated and now several arrests. new details on a wildfire that is still burning. terminal trash. crash and glass everywhere. passengers terrified inside. what happened inside this airport? massive search. the disappearance of a "wall street journal" reporter getting more bizarre by the minute, especially with a new clue that surfaced. talk about confidence. a football fan gets etched with ink long before his team even makes it to super bowl xlviii. good friday morning. i'm marci gonzalez in for diana perez.

>> i'm john muller. we begin with the latest wildfire near los angeles that's already burned several homes and three are under arrest. >> the smoke blowing all the way out to sea dropping ash on communities 30 miles from the fire. abc's mary bruce now with the very latest on the effort to get the blaze under control. >> reporter: what began as an out-of-control campfire quickly spread thursday. ping-ponging through neighborhoods in the glendora foothills outside los angeles. >> it came through here like a hurricane. it went from being calm to couldn't even see. >> reporter: the fire fueled by hot santa ana winds and extreme drought, the worst in 150 years. >> it's crazy. it's a little surreal. >> reporter: 700 firefighters scrambled to battle the blaze from the air. >> you can see the water trying to get on the brush. >> reporter: and on the ground. residents grabbed bucks and hoses pitching in to save their neighborhood. all that hard work is paying off.

>> the forward spread of the fire has stopped. >> reporter: three men now behind bars accused of sparking the raging blaze with an illegal campfire. >> one was very remorseful for starting the fire. >> reporter: 30% of the fire is now contained but not before it burned 1700 acres. 2,000 homeowners were forced to evacuate told to grab what they could and get out. five structures have been destroyed including the historic singer mansion named after the founder of the sewing machine company. this tenant came back to find his apartment gone. >> what's next for me is i guess is to take one day at a time. >> reporter: officials have re-opened some of the evacuated areas and residents are returning to their homes. many to assess the damage. mary bruce, abc news, washington. >> and we'll check today's forecast for california in just a moment. but first nearly 200 united airlines passengers who expected to be in china right now are

instead in new jersey. their flight yesterday from newark to beijing turned back because of so swear turbulence. no passengers were injured but five flight attendants were treated for minor injuries much the passengers will aboard today's flight to beijing. and the problem for philadelphia passengers was on the ground. a baggage vehicle crashed into an airport terminal window spilling cool apartment and filling the us airways gate area with smoke. only the driver was injured. one report says the brakes may have failed. no flies were canceled or delayed but several gates were closed because of the mess. one soldier is dead two others injured after a helicopter crash in georgia. known as the night stalkers. they fly dangerous migs like the raid on osama bin laden. this black hawk helicopter was returning from a routine training flight when it made a hard landing, the fourth military crash in a week. president obama goes to the justice department later to deliver his much anticipated

speech on u.s. spying efforts. now, the president is not expected to announce any drastic changes, but he will call for more oversight of spy agencies. new jersey governor chris christie is trying to reassure the republican faithful that he'll survive the bridge scandal. christie spoke last night at a private fund-raiser saying "we will get through this" earlier lawmakers issued 20 subpoenas in the case and we should learn who got them later today. >> there's an expectation that people who receive those subpoenas will comply with them. we have no reason to believe they won't. >> the christie administration has now hired a former federal prosecutor to assist with an internal review of the scandal. new concern in west virginia this morning after the chemical spill contaminated the drinking water. thousands of people have been given the all-clear to use their tap again but pregnant women are being told to stay away from it two days after it was declared safe. health officials say the warning

is out of an abundance of caution. new details about the gunman who allegedly shot and killed two women at an indiana supermarket before he was shot dead by police. police still have no motive but they want to know if shawn bair may have dated the 20-year-old victim in the store police took two minutes to arrive at the scene and caught up with bair and he had the manager on his knees. >> you could see the manager there in a praying position. you could see the shooter waving the gun around pointing the gun at him. >> bair had a history of legal and drug problems and pictures of serial killers on his facebook page and postings saying "everybody should die." well, top senate conservative is calling it quits two years early. republican tom coburn of oklahoma will resign at the end of the current congressional term. coburn has been battling a recurrence of prostate cancer and told abc news earlier he only has five to ten years to live. now, both of oklahoma's senate

seats will be up for grabs it november. all right, the mayor of houston has married her longtime partner flying to palm springs because it is not legal there. they tied the knot on the 23rd anniversary of their relationship. parker hoped to get married in houston but said that might be a long time coming. first lady michelle obama is in full party mode as she turns 50 today. president obama is throwing her a big bash at the white house tomorrow and guests have been told to wear comfy shoes and come ready to dance. the white house is keeping the details under wraps but a delivery truck was spotted outside with cases of champagne. the first lady is describing herself as 50 and fabulous and she says she has never felt more confident. >> sounds like there's going to be a real shindig. looking great. time now for the weather across the nation, firefighters getting a break in southern california with light winds, most of the country will be dry today. but there will be some snow

welcome back. we are learning more about that huge data breach at target stores. they quote investigators as saying some of the software used was written in russian and appears to be part of a broad and very sophisticated campaign against many retailers, not just target and now neiman-marcus is offering free credit monitoring to its customers after a data breach there. contact lenses from google could someday help diabetics. it says it's testing a smart contact lens that would check glucose levels and tears and tell the wearer. but google says it'll take at least five years before these are ready for consumers. united airlines plans to furlough almost 700 flight attendants because not enough took the voluntary buyout after the merger. they have too many attendants and those from one airline can't yet work on the other's flights. the iphone getting more popular claiming a bigger share of the smartphone market.

a new report finding 42% of its owners have an iphone. samsung second, 26% share. both have seen increased sales over the past year. taco bell is offering a bigger variety of beverages. they rolled out six new drinks today including a mountain dew sangrita blast, hoping to bring in profits. 56% of their profits involved air beverage last year. when we come back, deception at a young age. researchers say sometimes babies fake their cries. plus, lucky date. one family, four kids and one fact about their birthdays that will blow your mind.

wearing while reading google glass. it was ruled that using the computer eyewear could be considered a distraction. but the police officer in this case failed to prove that the device is actually on at the time. the driver is one of the few selected to test google glass and was initially cited for speeding which she also beat. victoria secret tries to make good after a dispute over breast-feeding. it started when ashley clawson asked to breast-feed her son in a victoria's secret fitting room. she was told she couldn't do it. she complained and finds it incredible that a store that focuses on women's bodies wasn't more accommodating. >> if you think of it in its natural state it's meant to nurse your children. you know, that's why they're there. and you would think that victoria's secret would understand that. >> victoria's secret says her being denied to nurse was a violation of its policy. the store manager apologized to

her and offered her a $150 gift certificate. hollywood is saying good-bye to a '60s sitcom favorite after russell johnson who played the professor on "gilligan's island" died at 89. he was a handsome and brainy castaway that came up with a string of quirky inventions. he often joked the professor could build a short wave radio out of a coconut but could never figure out how to patch a hole in the boat. >> pretty obvious part i missed in the script. new research finds babies as young as 7 months can fake crying to get attention. >> no kidding. some parents have doubted that infants were capable of such deception but now researchers in japan who studied it found incidents of fakery. one started to laugh and smile immediately after crying. the nerve of babies. while we're speaking of babies a couple in england welcomed their fourth child. >> here's the unique thing, all

another peaceful night in downtown san jose after all the ar isn't the past week or so. now the arson suspect, patrick brennan, is staying here at the santa clara county's main jail in downtown san jose. he is being held on $1 million bail.
