breaking nous at 6:00, fire chase chasing a dozen people out of their homes overnight in san francisco. we are live with what first responders are vealing about their firefight. happening now, a fierce southern california wildfire flares up again overnight. where evacuation stand this morning. happening today, san francisco mayor ed lee will hold his state of the city address. the proposals and the changes he is expecting to make. morning, 6 a.m. on this friday i thanks for joining us, i'm eric thomas. >> i'm kristen sze. not a good morning on the roadways, what a me, 680 as a result of the gravel truck spill. >> here is leyla with more. >> not only 680 but westbound 580, we have got sky 7 hd flying overhead, live pictures right now, those taillights are pushing along with the westbound direction. that's where we have an earlier gravel truck that was losing its

load. so debris kept spilling out of this truck and it was enough to cause damage to vehicles, also some spinouts, so accidents took place because of this. right now, it is going to take some time to get a caltrans sweeper train coming in from fremont the north bound direction along 680 to get to this area in order to clean this mess up, but for miles, you can just see all that tremendous backup. now, you're also going to be seeing plenty of trucks and vehicles pulled over to the side of the roadway because all that gravel is getting kicked up into other vehicles. more updates coming up and how long that commute will take you in a bit. first, hear from mike and see what is happening in our weather department. >> thank you very much, leyla. good luck, everybody, with the commute. talk about weather, as a result with the day planner, next 12 hours for the bay irk starting off calmer no fire threat, 44. be 20 warmer by into. hang out in the upper 60s, low 70s through 4:00, very delig delightful evening, temperatures mid-50s, don't need a heavy coat. inland, frozen spots the north

bay and east bay valleys, 61 at noon. record high temperatures near 70 during the afternoon. cooler for you this evening, 51. speaking of cooler, check out the coast, 20 cooler, a lot of mid to upper 40s, still in the upper 60s, low 70s after nap hours, winds will be blowing out into the water. mild this evening, enjoy mid-50s. here's kristen and eric with the top news stories. >> thank you. breaking news overnight in san francisco, firefighters are popping up after battling a fire in the bay view. one home has burned and there are injuries. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live at the scene. amy? >> reporter: yeah, three people were taken to the hospital, crisp, at one point, neighbors and firefighters thought they were trapped inside, didn't know if they were gonna be able to get out okay. the fire started on apollo at williams here in san francisco's bay view district about 3:30 this morning. it is a two-unit home, a family in one unit that got out okay. firefighters were told there were three people trapped inside

the home that was on fire and the neighbors say they didn't see any of the people inside. they were also nervous. they wouldn't be able to get out. >> they were living in the house that got burned down. didn't see the two guys, we were concerned they were trapped in there all had to go in there i told them not to luckily they sneaked out the back window, everybody is safe. >> reporter: here is a close up shot of the damage, firefighters just walked us up to the home so we could see that fire do did destroy it. the home that had the three adults in it, the three people did get out safely through the windows, they were take tonight hospital to treat their scrapes they suffered during the escape and smoke inhalation. the home that had the big family inside of it, that home is okay, doesn't have any gas or electricity, they are going to have to stay somewhere else for now. firefighters have no idea what caused this fire that will be part of their investigation. live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news.

>> thanks. 6:03 now. developing news from southern california, the firefight tops to protect homes from l.a. from a 1700-acre wildfire while the men accused of sparking it could be in even deeper trouble this morning. abc7 news reporter katie mar zblool low is live in the newsroom. katie? >> reporter: right now august live look at the flames for you, flare ups in the azblooz za area overnight. officials say 870 homes remain evacuated there meantime a judge has upped the bail of the three men arrested for sparking the fire. listen to this, from $20,000 each to $500,000 each. half a million dollars. glendora police say the higher bail is because of the seriousness of the crime, the extensive property damage and the high cost of fighting the fire. the men, all in their early 20s, will make their first court appearance on tuesday. they told authorities their camp fire got out of control, that was just before 6:00 yesterday morning. since then, the fire has burned more than 1700 acres and destroyed five homes, thousands of homes had to be initially

evacuated. people who were not forced to leave had to just wait and worry. >> i have my car, my sister's car, packed and ready to go, waiting to make the final decision. so close to home, really hits home. >> more than 550 firefighters, three helicopters and two super scoop verse been battling this fire. authorities say one firefighter and one other person did suffer minor burn injuries much the fire this morning 30% contained and firefighters say it's no longer growing. so good news there. live in the newsroom, katie mar zplul low, abc7 news. >> thank you. this afternoon, the san jose man believed to be behind almost a dozen arson fires is scheduled to be in court. police say 48-year-old patrick brennan was arrested wednesday night aft detectives watched him for three days a young sergeant is credited with cracking the case. he says brennan kept topping each search list for convicted arsonists in the area and brennan was already in the santa clara county arson's database

for setting 16 fires back in 1999. abc7 news reporter matt keller will have more on that sergeant live from san jose in our next half hour. just about 6:06 now. happening today, governor jerry brown is expected to make a major announcement this morning and sources say he will declare a statewide drought emergency that would allow him to seek federal help as the state faces its third dry winter in a row. local water managers, central california growers, have been urging the governor to make the call. a drought emergency would also allow him to call for conservation measures and have flexibility in deciding the state's water priorities. san francisco mayor ed lee is set to deliver his state of the city address at 10:00 this morning. mayor lee is expected to focus on housing and maps to make his speech at the hunter's point naval shipyard. that's where 272 housing units are currently under construction. the san francisco examiner reports the mayor is promising to add 30,000 more housing units to the market within the next half-dozen years with at least

half of them accessible to residents making middle income or lower. 49er fans are counting down to sunday's nfc championship game between the niners and seahawks. this afternoon, the 49ers will wrap up their final practice in santa clara before heading to seattle. nine hearse the hottest team in football, having won the last eight games, the last three on the road but face the seahawks on their home field where they have won 15-17 games. the 49ers are changing up their normal schedule for west coast road games by traveling a day earlier than usual. the niners are scheduled to leave for seattle at 4:45 this afternoon. abc7 sports anchor, mike shumann, will be with the 49ers in seattle for complete postvictory coverage, i will say postgame, you know will be a victory, another edition of vernon's views sunday night with tight end, vernon davis. shue is a former 49er. follow him on twitter at mike shuman for inside look at the game. stay with us here on the abc 7 morning news. coming up at about 6:22, we are gonna go live to seattle to talk

the nsa was able to extract people's travel plans, contacts, financial plans and more. the nsa responded saying the messages were lawfully collected. this morning at 8 a.m., the lieutenant discuss the nsa program and strip the agency's ability to store phone data from millions of americans. new this morning, we are now learning the high-end neiman marcus chain was targeted by hackers long before the holidays and it looks like the data breach goes back to last july, at least. today's "new york times" reports neiman marcus told credit card companies earlier this week that the time stamp on the first data breach was mid-july. neiman has not revealed how widespread the attack was but says it has been fully contained. similarly, the "wall street journal" is reporting the malicious software used by hackers in the target data breach was on the black market last spring and part of that computer code was written in russian. apple chairman tim cook is in china today where the i phone 5 s and iphone 5 c went on sale today. he helped announce the phones at

this, the fire has burst through the roof, it has gutted the inside of this building. and saving it is probably not an option at this point. it looks as though the firefighters are in a defensive mode and the point is to try to keep this fire from spreading to other buildings. >> yeah. and we are just getting word too now that this fire spread to three alarm, a three-alarm fire at a machine shop. definitely stay on top of the story four, this close to 101, could be a traffic impact, people see the smoke. >> absolutely. the left side of your screen there you see firefighters are putting water on an unburned section of the building, as we said, an effort to keep it cool and hopefully keep the fire sprom spreading too quickly into another segment. as you look in the main building here it looks like the fire may be dying down a bit you can not because of heroic measures but because it is running out of fool there. thick, black smoke is being spewed into the air. >> it will be the growinger

specialty tool machine shop this is industrial, as you said you can not an apartment complex fire as earlier reports indicated. it is really roaring in redwood city, whenever you have a fire like this with smoke, rising as such, want to wonder about the wind situation and that's why we are going to bring you meteorologist mike nicco. >> what is going on with the wind there is? >> calm right now. the heat of the fire will carry the smoke straight up until it reaches a temperature that's the same as the atmosphere, then it will start to flame out. winds are coming out of the north, live south of redwood city, you may smell some of that smoke over in the next couple of hours or so. you can see right here, we are calm all the way from sfo down to san jose. at least at the surface, everybody else pretty much light and variable, indicative of high pressure. temperature about 38 now in redwood city. here is your day planner, not quite as mild this morning, the coast, up to 20 degrees cooler,

as you tray to make that commute out of livermore, out of the altamonte pass to the duplin interchange. we know that the trucks continued south bound along 680, more debris there heading out onto the roads, be very, very careful. eric, kristen? >> thank you. breaking overnight knight had hayward, six people are displaced by a fire at answer parent building on cypress avenue. officials think someone living in a carport storage unit may have started the fire that quickly raced to the building, damaging two units, no one was injured acre mazingly no cars burned in the fire. we are learning more about the suspected serial arsonist finally call the in san jose after a dozen fires. abc 7 news reporter matt kelser live in san jose with that and more information on how authorities tracked him down, specifically the input from one police sergeant. matt? >> reporter: well, another peaceful night for people living you in the downtown area here in san jose. the arson suspect, patrick brennan, is staying here at the santa clara county jail, the

main jail in the county. he is being held on $1 million bail. investigators give all the credit to cracking this case to long-time san jose police sergeant, jason kid well. kid well says he entered specifics about the man into ten database and found patrick brennan fit the description. he says this case was personal, spent hours of his own time lacking for the serial arsonist who set at least 12 fires, including ones at a massive warehouse architecture much and several homes. >> i think definitely a relief. i know when i got up this morning, aid text message from a friend who lives downtown and says, you know, that i was scared and, you know, i was really worried about this. so you know, what a relief it is. >> reporter: brennan was in the santa clara county arson database for setting 16 fires back in 1999. detectives started watching him on sunday and arrested him at his mobile home park on wednesday night. the county jail website says that benson scheduled to make his first court appearance here

in santa clara county at noon today. reporting live in san jose i matt keller, abc7 news. >> matt, thank you. developing news, fire officials say a 1700-acre wildfire burn you can in the foothills northeast of los angeles has flared up and continues to threaten homes in azblooz sa. here is a live look. some of the 3700 people evacuated were allowed to return home in glendora night night, despite the fact it continues to burn. five homes were destroyed, 17 structures damaged. this morning, the fire is 30% contained. it's no longer growing. three campers being held for starting the fire had their bail raised last night from $20,000 to half a million dollars each. 6:35. back to our breaking news in redwood city. you are looking at live pictures from sky 7 hd of this multialarm fire going on what we believe is a machine shop it is located at bay road and douglas avenue. it looks, as firefighters probably feared, spread to an

adjacent wing of the building, where the fire started, the main portion of the building as the fire is dying down, because it burned its way through almost everything in there as you can see, if you look very closely, they are putting fire on this wing of the building, but fire's already showing through the roof there >> yeah business records show that two businesses may be located there, fmw machine shop or groger specialty tool there is a three-alarmer first called in at 5:52 this morning, going for less than 40 minutes, or a little more than that. this is all happening very close to 101 people on the freeway may certainly see the smoke, just south of woodside road and this is a busy area, although an industrial area, thankfully not a apartment complex fire as first thought, because redwood city just had a huge apartment complex fire not too long ago. >> and that fire is really going, spreading to that adjacent wing. firefighters trying to keep it from spreading to nearby

the latest live look at this fire, three-alarm fire going right now in redwood city. excuse me, gone to four alarms now, despite what you saw there on your screen. that's not azusa, this is redwood city, bay road, douglas avenue, a four-alarm fire in what we believe to be a machine shop or tool shop and it is just blazing away. >> redwood city fire department confirmed the address is 894 douglas avenue and that is the fmw machine shop, business records show. this is burning just near 101, south of woodside road, so you know, people on the freeways may certainly see the smoke and smell the smoke this morning. red old wood city has tweeted that it has gone to four alarms. >> look at the top right of your screen, where the fire began. it is largely gutted there, not much fire going on it has spread to this adjacent wing and now the task for firefighters is to keep it from spreading to adjacent buildings. we are staying on top of this and bring you the very latest information on it. right now, what about the smoke?

6:46 now. this is our breaking news city from redwood city, a massive fire going on at this machine shop on douglas avenue and bay road. if you see -- wonder how firefighters earn their money, you are look being right at it. this firefighter is on a ladder truck above the fire. of course, the perspective makes it look like he is closer to it than it is, but for most of us laymen, he is pretty darn close any watch continue to spray water on this fire to keep it sprom spreading to other buildings but it has largely gutted this machine shop, the fmw machine shop at doug laws and show you where this is in redwood city on the map. you can see is blazing away right there, douglas avenue and bay road it is within that site distance of 101. >> south of woodside road, you can see it is completely out of control, the fire, the flames just blazing away with that

thick snow rising, surely, people driving past on the freeway this morning would be able to see that and again, we are finding out that this is a machine shop called fmw. they do some welding there. this is in a very busy part of redwood city, industrial but also residences in that vicinity. so, this is gonna create a lot of havoc for folks just trying to get around that area this morning as well. they fight this amazing fire. >> they do welding there, they may have acetylene tanks in there, that may be one were firefighters want to keep their distance a little bit in the blaze, they could easily explode. you see them pouring water on this fire from this firefighter on a ladder truck here, others on the other side of the structure, trying to keep the fire contained to this area, putting it out doesn't seem at this point to be much of an option, letting it burp itself out is probably closer to what's going on, thick plumes of smoke
