striking a giant iconic statue of christ. we'll tell you about the damage coming up. >> and apparently that isn't the first time that lightning has stricken that statue, as well. we'll tell you more about that coming up. and imagine a little leaguer scores the winning run and is sued by his coach for what happened during the onfield celebration. what the boy's dumbfounded father is saying about the $500,000 lawsuit this morning. that's coming up later. but first, breaking news. that terror attack in kabul, afghanistan, targeting foreigners. we're now learning two americans were among the almost two dozen killed in the suicide attack. the newest member of our foreign reporting team, hamish macdonald, is following breaking developments from our london bureau. hamish, good morning and welcome to abc. >> reporter: good morning, bianna. that's right. the death toll now stands at 21 including two american civilians and we can tell you this morning they were working

for the american university of afghanistan. no names have been released yet because the families are still being informed. but we can tell you that one was in the political sciences faculty. the other was working in student affairs. now, this attack occurred at la taverna, a lebanese restaurant in perhaps the wealthiest and possibly the safest part of kabul. anyone that's been there will be able to tell you whoever carried out this attack had to go through a number of security checkpoints just to get there. the interior ministry has told us the police chief responsible for the area has been stood down pending an investigation and the taliban has claimed responsibility. they say it's a revenge attack, dan, for an operation carried out earlier this week in which multiple civilians they say were killed. >> yeah, and it's a frightening shift in tactics for them. usually they go after hard targets. this time, taking on a soft target and a lot of civilians injured and killed there. hamish, thank you very much for your reporting this morning. we have another breaking story. this one out of texas. a pilot of a medevac helicopter in the middle of a critical mission, transporting a patient blinded by a laser pointed

directly into the cockpit. what happened next? there's a federal investigation this morning, and abc's susan saulny is on the story from our washington bureau. susan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dan. a medical helicopter team was in the process of trying to save a life already when all of a sudden, they needed to save one of their open. it was a rescue that nearly went wrong. this morning federal authorities and dallas police are looking for the person who blinded this medevac helicopter with a laser pointer. 30-year-old michael pruitt, a medic with the air evacuation team, was severely burned early friday when a suspect on the ground shined a green laser into the cockpit hitting him in the eyes. pruitt suffered a severe burn to his right eye causing the chopper to make an emergency landing so he too could be rushed to the hospital. >> the light energy can produce such a high amount of energy, and that can be permanent damage. >> reporter: incidents of lasers being flashed at pilots have been on the rise

with at least 75 reported this month after more than 3,000 last year. >> pilots are extraordinarily vulnerable to this because there's nothing that you can wear that's going to flash close, so to speak, when it sees one of these things and not let your eyes see it. >> reporter: the suspect could face a penalty of up to $250,000 and 5 years in prison. >> interfering with a flight crew is a federal crime, so the fbi has looked into many of these laser incidents over the last several years. we've located some of them, arrested. several have been prosecuted. >> reporter: still, many are not aware of the risks that come with a simple little laser. >> you wouldn't think of a little green laser as having the power to bring down an airplane full of pilot. but if you get the pilot's eys,s you could end up killing 400 people. >> if you take the vision from a pilot, that aircraft's ability to land is greatly compromised. >> reporter: and the passengers on board are all lucky to be alive, but authorities are cracking down on these incidents to prevent them from getting any worse. bianna. >> yeah, some states are trying to enact stiffer penalties as a deterrent.

susan, our thanks to you. well, we're going to turn out west now where finally progress is being made against the destructive wildfire that's forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes outside los angeles. an epic drought, the worst in a century, is fueling the blaze and forcing the governor to declare an emergency for the state. abc's david wright has the latest from the fire zone. >> reporter: this unusual midwinter wildfire has meant devastating loss for some. >> that's all gone. >> reporter: this man's home was spared, but his shed and his neighbor's house are gone. >> the important thing is my wife and my two girls are safe. >> reporter: california officials are now dreading what may be an endless summer of fire season. >> i'm declaring a drought emergency in the state of california. >> reporter: governor jerry brown confirming the most populous state in the nation is in crisis. >> we're facing perhaps the worst drought that california has ever seen. >> reporter: the drought has a direct connection to the wildfires we've been seeing because these hills are bone dry. two-thirds of the state is prone

to burn. the three men accused of starting this blaze now face federal charges and up to five years in prison. authorities say they started a campfire to keep warm even though there were red flag warnings. >> they weren't trying to burn anything down. this was not intentional in any way. >> reporter: state officials are powerless to bring on the rain that's so desperately needed to reduce the fire danger, but they are hoping that citizens will behave more responsible calling on everyone to use 20% less water. >> hopefully it'll rain eventually, but in the meantime, we have to do our part. >> reporter: if voluntary conservation doesn't work, mandatory measures may follow. a looming crisis of which this fire is only a symptom. for "good morning america," david wright, abc news, azusa, california. >> our thanks to david wright for that story this morning. >> a lot of other news developing this morning so let's get it back over to ron. >> let us. good morning to you, dan and bianna.

sara, good morning. president obama announced major changes to the telephone controversial government surveillance program. the changes involve americans as well as people abroad, and the president also addressed his critics to say the nsa program violated privacy laws. >> i believe critics are right to point out that without proper safeguards, this type of program could be used to yield more information about our private lives. >> and the new guidelines will still allow the government to collect the phone numbers of hundreds of millions of americans, as well as details of who they called and when, but they will no longer be stored by the government. if the government wants access to the database, which will be elsewhere, it will need court approval. the president also ordered the nsa, the national security agency, to stop routine data collection on dozens of foreign leaders. and new details this morning about the number of priests implicated in the child sex abuse scandal that rocked the catholic church. according to documents obtained by the associated press, former pope benedict defrocked 387 priests around the world in 2011

and 2012 for molesting children. that was a dramatic increase over the 171 priests removed in 2008 and 2009. the vatican prepared the documents to defend itself before a united nations committee investigating how the church handled sex abuse allegations against priests. and the west virginia company blamed for the chemical spill that left 300,000 without safe drinking water, well, they have filed for bankruptcy protection. freedom industries is facing multiple lawsuits, as you well could imagine, as well as state and federal investigations following that spill that contaminated the state's largest water system. water restrictions have been lifted for most residents, but pregnant women have been advised to drink bottled water still. and some amazing pictures out of brazil. the iconic christ the redeemer statue in rio de janeiro was damaged when it was struck by a lightning bolt. you see it right there. brazilian officials say the right thumb on the 98-foot-tall statue was damaged, chinned

during a violence thunderstorm that swept through rio thursday night. another finger was chipped during another storm last month. the statue underwent a massive $4 million renovation back in 2010. and i want you to take a look at this. police are looking for this guy. he's cruising around on a skateboard through a target store in clearwater, florida. that's not why he's wanted. check this out. he's seen -- you see him leaving the store with a 32-inch television. he didn't pay for that. he then is going to hop back on his skateboard and rolls away with his tv in hand through the parking lot there. there you go. there you see him. police say he was last seen zipping down the street. and you guessed it, he's still on his skateboard and still -- i guess we don't have to say allegedly but actually with that television in his possession allegedly. and happy 50th birthday to michelle obama. the first lady tweeted this picture on friday, her actual birthday, holding up her brand-new aarp card. tonight, there will be a big celebration at the white house where the president, who's older than 50, is hosting the

with how it all ended. >> just imagine going down the highway with two cars not just chasing each other, weaving in and out of traffic also ramming each at other at 100 miles of hour. this twisted pile of metal is the result of what authorities are calling an extreme case of road rage. the first 911 call coming in at 6:37 p.m. on wednesday night. >> there's two cars that looks like road rage, and they went crazy. >> reporter: the caller reporting two cars driving dangerously on washington state's interstate 90 near the city of issaquah. >> and one of them just -- pardon me? >> one of them just what? >> just hit the other one. >> reporter: the two speeding suvs begin slamming into each other multipling times as if trying to run each other off the road. >> both of them are extremely dangerous. >> reporter: the terrifying scene playing out for ten miles endangering everyone on that road.

more than a dozen 911 calls came in. >> i have no idea what the hell they were doing. they almost hit me. they were chasing each other. one was obviously trying to follow the other extremely closely. they were weaving in and out of traffic. >> reporter: then this. >> they just hit each other. they were merging in the same lane. >> reporter: a final collision. the two suvs flipping over left mangled in the center median in the town of bellevue. police say 29-year-old desi beltran was driving this ford explorer, and inside this ford freestyle, 32-year-old hugo yanez. yanez had two passengers, a 27-year-old woman said to be beltran's ex-girlfriend and her 2-year-old son. >> it's remarkable, and it's a testimony to the increasing safety features of vehicles that all the occupants were okay. >> reporter: both drivers were treated for minor injuries and arrested. the cars totaled and towed away. yanez tried to flee the scene but was quickly tracked down by

police. police now believe the incident was sparked by domestic disputes. both men were in court an friday to face a judge. yanez charged with two counts of reckless driving and a hit-and-run, his bail set at $20,000. beltran was charged with a count of felony domestic violence assault. his bail set at a million dollars. >> and a 2-year-old in the car. >> shocking. >> really shocking. >> all right, linzie, thank you. we'll turn to a developing story that has families in california on high alert for a mountain lion back on the prowl in their neighborhood. the big cat caught on camera before one of its savage attacks. helpless dogs proving no match for this clawed killer. abc's marci gonzalez has this story. >> reporter: serious concern this morning that this mountain lion preying on pets in a community outside los angeles is back. >> as the mountain lion came by, he went through the bench and the bushes here. >> reporter: this home surveillance camera capturing these images of the mountain lion earlier this month walking

towards the outdoor area where his 80-pound boxer named rocky was sleeping. the dog disappearing, no trace of him ever found. >> it's been rough, you know, the family is going through emotions. >> reporter: now we've learned just ten days later, the mountain lion returned. the next-door neighbors watching in horror as duke, their chihuahua mix, was attacked. >> we heard the dog crying. when my dad got up to look, he saw the mountain lion right there on the stairs of the fountain hopped right over with the dog in its mouth. >> reporter: the california fish and wildlife service says the extreme drought is sending more wild animals into residential areas in search of water and food. while wildfire experts explain attacks on humans are rare, neighbors are worried,. demanding that something be done to keep their pets and their families safe. >> there's a lot of kids in the neighborhood, you know, and it's very dangerous to be out.

now we know it's serious. it's something that has to be taken care of. >> and the california fish and wildlife service tells abc news under the law they cannot capture and relocate the mountain lion because it's a protected species, so for now we're told they're posting flyers and just warning residents to be cautious. >> tricky situation. marci, thank you. a big change this morning for the warrior prince. harry will no longer be piloting an apache helicopter in a combat zone. he's moving now to a desk job. there could however be some upside for his personal life leaving him with a little bit more time for the woman many think may be the next royal bride, and abc's lama hasan has the story from london. hey, lama. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you, dan. oh, how i wish i had a crystal ball to give you that bit of information. sadly, i don't, but here is what we know. this is the next phase of harry's work life. technically he's still in the army. he is still heavily involved with military duties. it just means that for now, he won't be doing them from the front line.

a free-spirited venture around the world globetrotter, military attack pilot, but now prince harry may finally be settling down. captain wales, an apache helicopter co-pilot during his three years with the army air corp is doing what he once called inconceivable. >> the last thing i want to do is have my soldiers sent to iraq and be back home twiddling my thumbs. >> reporter: that's right. harry is getting out of the cockpit and into a desk chair. according to kensington palace, prince harry will be taking a staff officer role in the british army helping to plan special events while retaining his rank as captain. >> the fact that he's been active of course gives him that real insight into what these people face when they're on the front lines and what happens to them when they're wounded and after they're wounded, the fact that it gives him this wonderful

opportunity to spearhead launch of the warrior games and that's something that he's incredibly passionate about it. >> reporter: last year harry attended the warrior games in colorado where over 300 injured troops competed, paralympic style. harry deciding organization should spread past the u.s. telling reporters -- >> hopefully bringing other athletes in here. >> reporter: but while harry's new london address may allow him to focus more on charity planning all of us will be focused on the time it allows him to spend with his girlfriend of 19 months, cressida bonas. on thursday the two were spotted at a burger joint for a low-key date. as harry walks away from his days in action, could he be setting his sights on taking this walk? >> i think absolutely this is a start of a new phase for harry and a new phase for harry and cressida. >> reporter: so wedding bells are not in the air for harry and cressida just yet, but this new desk job in london means he'll be able to help the wounded

abc's aditi roy is in our l.a. bureau with what could wind up being $500,000 worth of trouble. good morning, aditi. >> reporter: good morning, bianna. it's a really interesting story. alan beck says he likes his former player, that it hurts him to be suing the boy, but that he's doing so because he wants the teenager and his family to take responsibility for what he's calling physical and emotional injuries. this teenage little league player seen in these photos at one of his games is at the center of a $500,000 lawsuit for what his coach said he did while celebrating a teammate's walk-off hit for a come-from-behind win in march. >> he threw the helmet like a spike, like spiking a football. he's the strongest kid on our team. he threw a helmet, and it clipped my achilles and tore my achilles. >> reporter: former coach alan beck says it happened as the then 13-year-old was rounding base after the game's winning hit and the team began

celebrating. in court documents, beck says the blow from the helmet caused him serious physical, psychological and emotional injuries. >> as a coach against the young man that he's supposed to be training, not just in sports, but in maturity and in life. >> reporter: but beck says after failed attempts to work it out with the family, he has no choice but to sue the league, the parents and his former player. >> just wanted some accountability for their son's action. he's a great kid. i love the kid. you know, it really hurts me for me doing this. >> reporter: but the boy's parents say there is nothing to apologize for. that their son was simply joining the team's celebration. >> it would be something like get it out of the way so i can celebrate with my friends. >> reporter: joe and reagan paris believe the suit is frivolous. they're prepared to defend against what they believe is a senseless curveball. >> you would think that something this severe, an ambulance would have been called or people would have rushed to him.

>> beck's attorney told abc news his client is recovering from foot surgery he had yesterday related to the incident. abc news also reached out to the president of lakeside little league. he told us they have no comment. dan and bianna. >> sounds like it's tough for everybody involved. aditi, thank you. we want to take another look at the breaking overnight news and back to ron. >> hey, dan and bianna. in the news, at least two american civilians are among 21 people killed in a suicide bombing in afghanistan. friday's attack took place at a restaurant in kabul that's popular with foreigners. the suicide attacker's bomb exploded at the front of the restaurant while two armed men entered from the rear entrance shooting people. the taliban has claimed responsibility. and back in the u.s., federal authorities and dallas police are looking for the person who blinded the crew of a medevac helicopter with a laser pointer. a medic on board was severely burned when a suspect on the ground shined a green laser into the cockpit of that helicopter. the crew was in the middle of transporting a patient. and new information about

that southwest airlines plane that landed at the wrong airport in missouri earlier this week. the ntsb now says that the pilots had the right airport loaded into their flight management computer, but when they saw the runway, they said, when they saw those runway lights of the airport six miles away from their destination, they assumed that that one was the correct run and landed there. and, well, finally just when you thought you've taught your dog all the tricks in the book, i want you to check out jesse the dog, a jack russell terrier, he's zipping around. you're going to see him in a little bit in his own motorized car coming up here in a second. well, here he's pushing the shopping cart. you can imagine that and doing some shopping. he also hops rope and walks around on his front hind -- front legs, not hind legs, front legs and rides a ball and does all kinds of other weird things, successively weird things.
