authorities say the woman in heir 30s, touri from taiwan, was taking pictures, backing up, fell off the pier into the water. she was in the water a short period of time. three people jumped into the water, including a former lifeguard from series who has done a number of water rescues in the ocean on the east coast. he jumped in, grabbed the woman, braced himself under the pier. a net was thrown down and the woman was rescued. we talked to the rescuer's brother. >> the girl fell in the water. they called for help. nobody could swim. >> what too you think of your brother? >> he had a broken heel, broken in ten places, ease been recovering. i'm really proud of him. he has medical experience and

saved the girl. he's the man. >> the coast guard got here shortly thereafter, as did the fire department, on their watercraft, and helped perform cpr, reviving the woman, taking her to the hospital. at last check the woman is in the hospital and breathing on her own at this point. so, she has apparently been saved thanks to three people who jumped in the water, one of whom who is in the hospital, and two of the rescue crews and one rescuer being checked out at the hospital as a precaution. we're live in san francisco, abc7 news. unusually dry conditions are causing a rare winter fire danger in california. late this afternoon a fire quickly spread in half moon bay. turned two and a half acres near highway 1 before firefighters were able to put it out in southern california, much more dangerous fire continues to burn. the colby fire started thursday morning. it's destroyed at least five

homes. the fire has burned more than 1800-acres and is 30% contained. firefighters are having a hard time getting a handle on it because there's almost in humidity. nick smith joins us live -- with a look at how the dry conditions are affecting the bay area. >> drought conditions have prompted calls for water conservation, and lack of moisture has firefighters keeping a watchful eye on thick, dry brush that can turn into fuel. >> this weather pattern we're in hasn't really allowed ore seasonal arounds to rave. >> marin county fire officials are blaming the lack of rain, live fuel, and dry conditions for a fire that burn friday night. thick brush and a steep drop of the hills made it difficult and dangerous. >> a combination of all of them has allowed fires like this to happen in january. >> flames destroyed an acre of

this thick, have -- heavy brush. dry brush from the drought feeds the fire, and fighting the fire feeds the drought. >> facing perhaps the worst california has ever seen. >> the california governor says 2008 is covering two-thirds of the state. >> le alpine dam and the water levels are low. >> he is right. take a look. water levels that have been known to rise several feet high in spots, look like wading poll. we came across several people stopping to see the sight for themselves. rick says he will do his part. >> we adjusted the sprinklers for our landscaping, and do what you can. >> pray for rain. >> rain that so far has given no indication that it's headed this way. in marin county, nick smith, abc7 news. >> abc7 news meteorologist leigh glaser shows us how dry it is in

the bay area right now with live doppler 7hd. leigh? >> yeah, live doppler 7hd painting the picture of no moisture at all. we're seeing a few high clouds right along the coast. that is about it. and in the high country, the sierra, it is bone dry as well. i do want to mention tomorrow is our 29th "spare the air" winter "spare the air" alert for the bay area. the poorest air quality in the north bay. central bay, as well as inland east bay. and here's a look at how the state fared with extreme drought conditions last week. 28%, you see there in the rex mainly in the central valley area. and then this week, up to 63% of the entire state is under extreme drought conditions, and our snow pack only 17%. last year we had well over 100%. how much longer is this dry

pattern going to stay with us? that's coming up. because so little precipitation has reached the slopes in tahoe, resorts are making snow for their guests. north star ski resort are using the snow to cheer on the niners who play in seattle tomorrow for a chance at the super bowl. today the resort built seahawk statue but could not hold up against the snow cat. this time tomorrow the niners will be well into their nfc title game against seattle. as much as the seahawks brag about their fans, niner fans take a back seat to no one and the spontaneous 49ers rally broke out in seattle, decked out in red and gold, nine are fans are making sure san franciscoes represented. mike shumann was with them. >> who got it better than us? >> nobody!

>> the university of california and california state university systems are reporting more students than ever are applying for higher education.

applications jumped nearly 5%, but the number of out of state and international applicants grew by 20%. despite the much higher tuition. csu applicants are up 10% from two years ago. a thrown baseball helmet is turning into a half million dollar lawsuit in placer county. last spring a 14-year-old player scoring a winning rung threw his helmet. it hit coach alan beck, tearing his achilles tendon. he contends the injury caused him serious physical and psychological injuries and sued the boy's parents. they say their son was simply joining the team's celebration. >> just wanted accountability. for their son's actions. he is a great kid. i love the kid. it really hurts me to do this. >> be something like get it out of the way so i can celebrate with my friends.

a baby pig is on the road to recovery tonight after being severely hurt in a sacramento dog attack. animal control officers got a call for an injured pig and arrived to find the piglet bleeding with an eye injury and in bad shape. it was rushed to an animal shelter where everyone pitched in to help. >> to be able to bring him back here, clean him up, take him home, nurse him back to help, and have coworkers that supported that and want to jump in and help. it's an awesome feeling. >> come on. he is adorable, the pig did lose

an eye but it getting used to it. he'll recover in a foster home and then be put up for adoption he is cute, yeah. leigh glaser is checking the weather. >> very cute. hi there hope you had a nice saturday. it's still dry out there. live doppler 7hd not showing any returns. you may notice a little bit of the high clouds off the coast. veneer from time to time tonight. that's really about it. some clear sky. the moon is not quite full but will be extremely bright. something to look forward to. we had some more record highs today. check this out. richmond, 71. record high. 71, oakland museum, new record high. oakland airport, 57. that set a new record. 71, mountain view. that actually tied the old record there. hard to believe we're setting record highs this time of year.

talk about percent of normal in terms of rainfall. extremely dry. this is why we're so concerned about the lack of moisture, the lack of rain, only 14% of normal rainfall to date at ukiah. check out san francisco, only 18%. only 12% for livermore, 23% for san jose, 19% for moffet field. so, the declaration of a drought statewide pretty much evident in those numbers, the numbers tell the story. san francisco, 63. 68 in oakland. a look down from the sutro cam, napa, 55. 57 in concord. here's a look at our forecast as we head through the holiday week coming up. you will note that tomorrow is a "spare the air" day. mild to warm holiday weather will continue, and a dry pattern will continue right on in through next week.

overnight lows tonight, the coolest lock additions in the north and east bay valley areas. otherwise, pretty mild near the coast, with mid-to-upper 40s expected there. high pressure still dominating, it has been for the last month or so. keeping jet stream well to the north of us. start the weekend a little bit next week, but nonetheless a stream of weather pattern will stay with us through the weekend, and three month outlook, temperatures in the southwest, including the bay area, bill above normal and let's take a look at the three-month outlook for precipitation. we'll be below normal there. so, we will see just how long this drought situation will hang on, and we may get a little bit of a break in this weather pattern in about a week or so. now, talk about the big game tomorrow in seattle. san francisco, game starts 3:30. about 46 degrees outside. a little chilly there. and then by the time the game
