who is in the london bureau. hamish, good morning. >> good morning, dan. the group that is represented in the video, it's called ansa al suna. it's one of the groups based in the insurgent grouped based in dagistan. the same region that sochi is located in. the two guys were in the attack at the end of last year, targeting public transport. killed a number of people. the video always shows them preparing their bombmaking materials. ominously, however, they say there will be further attacks during the olympic games. there is a specific threat made to people planning to visit. there will be a surprise package for tourists visiting sochi during the winter olympics. now at the same time, the russian security forces released another video which demonstrates a security operation that took place on saturday in the

caucuses region, attacking militants. now, we can't independently verify the location and the timing of the video. but they say it happened on saturday and it killed a number of insurgents. it's fair to say that a few weeks out from the olympic games that the focus it almost entirely on security. reports out today suggest that the security operation in sochi will dwarf that that was here in london. you remember during the games, there were huge numbers of troops, police on the streets, patrolling to make sure the games went safely. now we're hearing today that double the number will be present in sochi over the next month or so. dan? >> estimates of 70,000 security officials. some worry it could spoil the spirit of the games. all that security. hamish, thank you. and welcome to abc news. and another big issue over the games. russia's infamous new anti-gay laws. george stephanopoulos is the first american journalist to interview the russian president in years, and he asked about it directly.

>> if gay and lesbian athletes engage in some sort of protest, wear a rainbow pin or other protest, will they will free from persecution under the propagation law? >> translator: acts of protest and propaganda are different things. i'd like to ask my colleagues and friends as they try to criticize us, it would do well to set their own house in order first. i did say, after all, and this is public knowledge, that in some of the states in the u.s., homosexuality remains a crime. >> putin rarely fails to be provocative. george also spoke to him about the olympic terror threats, of course, and the nsa leaker edward snowden. and you can watch the full interview on "this week." right here on abc. >> it's been described as one of the most intensive security operation in the olympics history. one of the safest city in the

world in the games. turn now to ron with this morning's other top stories developing overnight. >> good morning, everyone. we are learning that a third american was among those killed in a suicide bomb attack at a restaurant in afghanistan. friday's assault at a lebanese eatery in kabul, the capital city, frequented by foreigners left 21 people dead. two of the americans have been identified. alexis kamerman and alexandros peterson. both employees of the american university of afghanistan. the third victim works for unicef. the taliban claimed responsibility. and the flu widespread in 40 states. according to the latest figures from the cdc. the virus is taking its toll on the most vulnerable. in the past week alone, ten children have died. flu season runs until april. help officials are urging anyone who has not gotten the flu shot to get it. it's not too late. and in indiana, a pileup on interstate 65. local police say the drivers and cars following a semitruck were not able to stop in time after

the rig suddenly slowed down on the interstate. the slick, icy roads may be to blame. the chain reaction crash that followed. one truck with frozen pizzas erupted in flames. a second truck carrying lights also caught fire. four people were injured in that wreck. and former nba star dennis rodman has checked into rehab. rodman's agent says that he is getting treatment for alcoholism after his recent trip in north korea. he apologized for comments he made about american and american missionaries being detained in that country. he had been drinking before the interview in which he made those remarks. and a major upset down under. tennis star serena williams knocked out of the australian open by 14th ranked -- 14th seeded ana ivanovic. it snaps her 25-game winning streak. >> just too hot down there. the record temperatures. >> i think so.

next time. >> i'm sure. thanks, ron. turn now to the ongoing drama surrounded new jersey governor chris christie. he's on a fund-raising trip to florida right now. but back home there are new accusations shaking his administration. a mayor charging a shakedown from the top christie lieutenant has the governor's office on major defense this morning, and ryan smith has the latest. >> reporter: on the left-leaning news channel mssmbs nbc, the mayor of hoboken, new jersey, accusing the christie administration of delivering a message for the governor with devastating implications. >> i had a direct message, they're connecting the sandy funs to this. >> reporter: according to mayor zimmer, when she voiced concern about the construction project expected to cost hundreds of millions of dollars, the lieutenant governor pressed her to reconsider. >> she pulled me aside in the parking lot, and i said i know it's not right. the things should not be

connected but they are. if you tell anyone, i will deny it. >> reporter: overnight, the christie administration is fighting back, calling the allegations, quote, outlandishly false. how much did they receive? she said they only received $342,000. the christie administration says hoboken was approved for $70 million in federal aid and is targeted for more. the governor's office denying impropiety here. denying them, but no one can deny they come at a bad time. >> the speculation about the truth of these allegations really damages him moving forward. these are difficult charges for him to get past. >> reporter: we reached out repeatedly to mayor zimmer, she didn't return our request for comment. but, serious trouble here in new jersey. >> worth noting, though, he remains popular at this point. and his response to this story, very defiant. >> reporter: yes. she paints a conflicts picture. she had tweets and stuff like

first this half hour, member these pictures, we have been covering this story, the terrifying moments when a gang of bikers descended upon a suv with a family inside. they smashed the windows and dragged out the driver and beat him. >> horrifying story. and since this story, the driver has been relatively quiet. now he has taken action. and linzey janis has been covering from the start. >> reporter: it happened just over three months ago, and he's says he intends to sue the city of new york. an entire nation watched in horror as he and his wife and 2-year-old child were chased by a group of bikers. then he was graged from his suv and beaten. now the 33-year-old banker seen in this photo with his daughter just weeks ago is fighting back, filing a legal notice on behalf of his family. saying he intends to sue new york city and two off-duty police officers. >> this document filed is

putting the city of new york on notice of an impending lawsuit. >> reporter: the document filed on december 24th accuses the city of, quote, failure to adequately train, supervise, monitor and/or discipline police officers. they are seeking to recover damages in excess of $75,000 for each family member. and one of the officers named was allegedly part of a group seen attacking the range rover. he pleaded not guilty. >> even if these two police officers are deemed to have been off-duty at the time of the incident, the city can still be held liable. >> reporter: the now infamous chain of events caught on helmet cam begins with an apparent accident between him and one of the motorcyclists. the group then surrounds him and someone slashes his tire. terrified, he makes a break, crushing a biker with his range rover, leaving the rapper and

father of two paralyzed. the other officer named is off-duty internal affairs cop matthew rodriguez. he says he was nowhere near the scene of the beating but admits he was on the ride that day. new york city's law department says it has not been asked to represent any employees. it is stressing this is not a lawsuit, just a legal notice. >> surprised by the figures. $75,000, seeming a little low. but maybe go up? >> for each family member. himself, his wife and toddler. >> and the key there is in excess of $75,000. thank you. and back to ron for a look at the headlines. good morning, again. >> good morning, everyone, in the news, a new terror video out of russia has olympic security officials in that country on high alert. the video was released by a group based in the region around sochi. they are vowing future attacks. the games begin in just over two weeks. and more trouble for chris christie. hoboken's democratic mayor dawn
