the seattle seahawks in last night's nfc championship game. the niners, well, they muzzled their division rivals in the first half but the seahawks spo responded in the second. all pro corner, former stanford cardinal, delivered the tip. malcolm smith with the pick. richard sherman with the tip. sending seattle to the super bowl in two weeks. the niners are back in the bay area following that tough loss to the seahawks. we were all hoping for a return to the super bowl but the team can hold its head up high about its play this season. matt keller is live in santa clara with more on that. matt? >> reporter: eric, it was a tough loss after a fun season. this sign here scribbled onto this posterboard may say it all for the fans who showed up last night to welcome the 49ers back to the team headquarters. it says don't be so hard on yourselves. 49er fans lined the road leading

up to their team headquarters here at santa clara after their 23-17 loss in the nfc championship game. the team couldn't win a third straight playoff game but fans wanted to say thanks for another entertaining season. >> it's good to show appreciation to the team. it's been a good season overall, final game notwithstanding, they have given us some thrills so we're here to say thank you. >> the 49ers landed at mineta san jose international airport just before 11:00 last night before filing into six waiting buses for the trip to their headquarters. many players took twitter to thank niner nation. aldon smith said thank you for your support and other players tweeted saying the niners will be back. patrick willis may have put it best saying i have no reason to think that next year won't be our year. the quest for six continues next season and will take place here at levi stadium. matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you very much. san francisco mayor ed lee

niners loss. others left quietly, celebrations on hold until next season. the celebrations were not on hold in seattle. >> super bowl, super bowl, super bowl. >> fans took to the streets to celebrate their victory over the 49ers. you can hear as the fans chant super bowl over music while waving flags. some passed around what appeared to be a large poster of seattle coach pete carroll. the seahawks will face off against the denver broncos in super bowl xlviii. it's 4:33 now. switching gears, residents living in a 13-story apartment building in the panhandle in san francisco have been forced out of their homes this morning after a two-alarm fire in one of the units. it happened at 11:00 last night ok mcalster street near baker. firefighters managed to put the fire out quickly but called out additional help because of the smoke. no injuries were reported. police are looking for the gunmen who killed two people

sitting inside a car in an east oakland neighborhood. it happened around 2:30 in the afternoon yesterday near 100th avenue and macarthur boulevard. officers responded to reports of gunfire and found a car with two people inside suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. both died at the scene. and in san francisco, two people are recovering from injuries this morning following a shooting. it happened on turk street. officers found one victim at 9:10 and about 20 minutes later found the other victim four blocks away. a suspect has been arrested. police say the victims are expected to recover from their wounds. new this morning, b.a.r.t.'s nine-month long contract battle wound up costing the agency millions. today's san francisco chronicle said b.a.r.t. spent $2.2 million to reach the settlement and that doesn't count $5 million lost due to the strikes. it spent more than a million dollars chartering buses to shuttle riders around. here's how they break down the

$2.2 million talks. nearly half went to pay the salaries of 53 union negotiators who took time off work to sit across the table from b.a.r.t. negotiators. b.a.r.t. spent $1.2 million on outside consultants and pr people. nearly $5,000 on take-out food. nick's plaza cafe took about $2600 in sandwich orders. 4:35. martin luther king weekend normally a big time for skiing, but plenty of people staying around for the warmth. >> absolutely. we've got warm temperatures once again today. let's take a look at them as we break down your day planner. we're in the 30s and 40s so off to a pretty seasonal start this morning. we'll have high clouds through the better part of the morning hours but those should taper a little bit in the afternoon. we're already in the low to mid-60s by noon and mid to upper 60s by 4:00, which is pretty close to record high temperatures. it will be clear and quiet by the time we get to 7:00.

let's fast forward through the short week. we'll have a wind shift. so tuesday and wednesday temperatures are going to pull back just a little bit, but then you can see thursday we'll start to warm up again. all right. and we do have areas of construction so if you do need to make your way to work this morning, you will be running into a couple of areas of construction projects. the first one i want to get to is right here in oakland if you are traveling in the southbound direction from 880 from davis to marina, that is where you'll find crews. we are looking at a little bottleneck there as you make the approach to 38 into san lorenzo. northbound traffic doesn't appear to be affected as you continue into san leandro. a look at our drive-time traffic, 22 minutes. on highway 4 antioch to concord 14 minutes and 101 southbound from san rafael into san francisco is a quick 17-minute drive. here's a live look outside at the san mateo bridge.

going on today to honor him. coming up in just a few minutes. the olympic torch relay has just reached volgegard this morning. the police presence right there is massive as the olympic flame winds its way through the streets. there are growing concerns about the safety of american athletes and tourists at the sochi olympics. an islamic militant group is threatening an attack on the games. one senator says it's too dangerous to attend the events in sochi next month. nbc's mary bruce has the latest. >> reporter: with the olympics weeks away fresh threats against tourists are raising concerns about american security. the terror group behind last month's attacks posted this video, claiming to show the suicide bombers responsible. they are seen building their

explosives and traveling to their target. they say this was just the beginning. the group warned they'll have a surprise package for tourists who come to the olympics. >> the long and the short of it is that i think that vladimir putin and the russian government will be very lucky to get through the olympics without an incident. >> reporter: the state department has cautioned americans headed to the games to be on the lookout for terrorism. some athletes have set up their own private security and emergency evacuation plans. one u.s. senator says he thinks it's too dangerous to go. >> i would not go. i don't think i would send my family. >> reporter: but russian authorities insist the olympics will be safe. sochi has been transformed from a sleepy town to a virtual police state. >> translator: the job of the olympics house is to ensure the security of the participants in the olympics and visitors. we will do whatever it takes. >> reporter: but u.s. officials say the russian government needs to be more cooperative. >> what we're finding is they're not giving us the full story about what are the threat

streams. >> reporter: russian security will be tested today when the olympic torch relay goes through volgegard where they pulled off those deady attacks. . happening now, dozens of ukrainian protesters remain camped out on a central street in kiev following a night of rioting. anti-government demonstrators clashed with riot police and tried to overturn a bus blocking their way to the parliament building yesterday. today the government is set to hold talks with leaders of the opposition. it's 4:42. happening today in the bay area, the freedom train tribute to martin luther king will make its annual run from san jose to san francisco starting at 10:00 a.m., but organizers fear this could be the last time. the special caltrain has been chartered for nearly 30 years by the dr. martin luther king jr. association of santa clara valley. dr. king's widow organized the first one but this year ticket

sales are down. as of friday only 300 tickets had been sold. last year's ridership was 1200. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield will have a live report in 30 minutes. here's what's closed today for the holiday, local, state and federal government offices are closed with the exception of emergency services. banks and financial institutions are closed, post offices as well. there will be no mail delivery. b.a.r.t. and muni operate on saturday schedules. ac transit on a sunday schedule. the golden gate ferries are also on holiday schedules. yosemite national park is waiving the entrance fee for martin luther king jr. day. you can get into the park without paying $20. the weather is good, the roads are clear and that's unusual, as we know, for january. >> i know. usually you see some snow, something like that in yosemite in this time of year, mike.

>> i'll have to check and see if the pass is still open. i'll bet it probably is. lack of snow up there is incredible. let's go in search of something different beside record high temperatures on this holiday, even though we'd probably like some nice weather to be outside or to be celebrating, you know, dr. martin luther king jr. in some way or another. here's a look at our visibility from live doppler 7. you can see a few high clouds out there, a little bit in the way of some low visibility issues at half moon bay but you're still at 4 miles per hour. let's take a look at the entire country. pretty quiet once again. we have a little clipper system coming into north dakota and minnesota. that will roll through the great lakes and keep the coldest weather there. you can see a lot of lake-effect snow all the way into new england. it may not make it all the way over to philly, new york and boston but you might want to check ahead just in chase you're flying that way. you definitely want to see how cold it's going to be. freezing cold in petaluma, 29,

napa 33 and american canyon. everybody else in the mid to upper 40s in calistoga, bodega bay, novato, san rafael and mill valley. across the golden gate 49 san francisco, 47 in alameda. we're in the mid to upper -- i'd say low to mid-40s around san carlos, redwood city. 37 cupertino. 10 degrees cooler in lafayette and 37 one of the cool spots in san ramon. that's the way it looks. you can see how clean the air is today. the good news, it's not a spare the air. that ended at midnight. a few high clouds are possible today and near record highs, just like yesterday. cooler breezes through the midweek will take us out of that record range but the breezes may get fast enough thursday we could have another fire danger on our hands. that's thursday, we'll keep our eye on it. low to mid-70s los gatos, gilroy. everybody else in the mid to

upper 60s. san jose at 69. we'll be in the mid to upper 60s on the peninsula today. we'll be about 68 in palo alto, same thing at half moon bay. as you head up the peninsula we'll drop down into the mid-60s. we'll have mid to upper 60s throughout most of the north bay. santa rosa 70. sausalito 64, the extreme. then we'll have mid-60s to about 70 degrees along the east bay show, 70 being the exception at oakland. then the east bay valleys we'll have mid to upper 60s. here's your accu-weather seven-day forecast. notice tuesday, wednesday, thursday temperatures are down just a little bit. possibility of them rebounding a little bit this weekend, but still well above average in the mid to upper 60s. have a good one. here's leyla with a check of mass transit on a holiday. >> because of the holiday, we do have mass transit running on a saturday or holiday service, so if you do take mass transit, you want to text your local agency and make sure you can get where

you need to be. b.a.r.t. running on saturday service. caltrain, we do have rel lar weekday service. a krchlc transit is on a sunday service schedule. the t third line will have special service from bay shore boulevard to sunnydale avenue to coordinate with the arrival of the caltrain freedom train. so keep that in mind. as we take you into martinez, we have this area of construction eastbound highway 4. we'll have lanes blocked off. that's going to last until 5:00. as we take a look, a live picture of 680 coming down from highway 4 right into walnut creek through pleasant hill. you can see not too many cars out there will take you 9 minutes to get down to the 24 junction. >> thank you. new this morning one of emeryville's best perks is looking at an uncertain future this morning. commercial property owners pay a tax to keep emery go around running. that's the free shuttle that stops nearly everywhere in the

city, but the "contra costa times" businessman francis ca collins says he's tired of paying the tax to keep the shuttle alive because he doesn't use it. turns out, and this probably won't surprise you, passengers really don't like those smaller, slim line seats the airlines are putting in. a new survey found many passengers who had to sit on them are not fans. an overwhelming 83% of passengers said they were less comfortable than traditional seats. they are being installed by almost all the carriers. they're lighter, have less padding and slimmer than their older counterparts and airlines can squeeze more of them onto airplanes. only 8% of travelers said they were more comfortable. it's 4:48. coming up, a new video and a plea from north korea from an american held captive for more than a year. this morning, the message for

new this morning, an american missionary being held in north korea is appealing to the u.s. to help secure his release. kenneth bae was arrested in november, 2012, accused of crimes against the state. he was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. this morning bae appeared in a gray prison uniform and baseball cap at spoke at what he called a press conference held at his own request. the 45-year-old says he wants to return to his family as soon as possible and hopes the u.s. will help. two weeks ago bae's detention was in the news after former basketball star dennis rodman traveled to north korea for an exhibition game and made comments implying bae was at fault. rodman later apologized. speaking of dennis rodman, he's also reportedly checked

into rehab seeking treatment for alcohol addiction. ♪ happy birthday to you ♪ happy birthday to you >> according to his agent, rodman's drinking escalated during his controversial trip to north korea. the 52-year-old has long battled drug addiction and alcohol abuse. his agent said his drinking escalated to a level not seen before. rodman recently apologized for an outburst in a live interview saying he had been drinking at the time. a warning for anyone planning to file taxes this year. thieves are taking off with your tax returns before you even file them. 1.6 million fell victims to this crime in just the first half of 2013. >> all they have to do is use your social security number, fill out a 1040ez form. these days you don't have to submit a paper copy of your w-2 so thieves can make up all the information and get a tax refund in your name. >> the federal trade commission

has an undeclared soy allergen in it. the ultimate cheeseburger mac contains soy but the ingredient is not included on the label. the problem was discovered during a routine quality check. state health officials are reporting a sharp increase in the case of whooping cough. there were 700 more cases of pertussis in 2013 than the year before. it's a highly contagious respiratory disease that typically affects babies and young children were most of last year's cases were in children ages 7 to 16. they think children who were vaccinated failed to get a follow-up booster shot. iran says it has stopped enriching uranium. international inspectors were on hand when enriching machinery was turned off at one site and plan to be there when officials shut down another site. iran says it's doing its part under an historic deal reached in geneva last november.

in exchange, the world's economies will lift temporary sanctions. the deal is good for six months, during which they hope to hammer out a more permanent agreement. a blow to washington's hopes of moving a u.s. military base on okinawa. the mayor won re-election and opposed to his city playing host to an air station. they agreed to move the base but many okinawans want the base off the island completely. an amazing story here from space. the row seta spacecraft was launched ten years ago and has been in hibernation the last three years. an international alarm clock was set to wake it up at 2:00 pacific time to chase down a comet racing toward the sun. scientists won't know if the wake-up call actually worked for several more hours.
