place. the sheriff moved in for what could be a lengthy investigation. let's show you what the scene looked like earlier. around 2:00 police officers conducting a search related to robberies on bart property. the suspect is a known fellon. officers had auj sayin -- authorization to make a forced entry. >> they went in, searching for a suspect the suspect was not there but one officer fired and fatally wounded the other officer, we're trying to figure out how that happened. >> it's unknown whether the gun went off accidentally or if this is a case of a misidentified target. we're told the officer killed likely had his gun drawn and shot on the torso under the arm where his vest was not

protecting him. the suspect they're looking for has not returned to the apartment. the deceased officer we're told has not been identified but we're told he has 20 years of experience the officer that accidentally shot him had owe more than ten years of experience. bart says this is the first time in its history an officer died in the line of duty. >> thank you very much. abc7 news is live in eden medical center tonight. a very moving outpouring there late today for this fallen officer. >> absolutely. this has been a very somber mood with police officers from around the east bay here to pay respects f you look behind me there is a large group making their way down the hill from emergency department there at the hospital. they're making their way towards a podium set up where we believe bart officials may make a statement. this scene has been

active all afternoon. sheriff depu deputies lined streets and a flag-draped coffin was carried into the coroner's van as you can see here. those police officers after providing security marched up the hill to pay respects then once again back down the nil a large procession led by motorcycle police officers to take that coffin to what would be the final resting place we're waiting to find details which may become available. as you can see, a lot of people in uniform approaching the podium here, and we'll attempt to bring you this conference live if we can switch to that camera, where that press conference is about to
