it all happened in an instant, witnesses said, and not a single word was exchanged between the gunman and his victims before a burst of shotgun blasts sparked an afternoon of horror. they worked to secure the deadly scene at the mall in columbia, maryland. bringing in robots to disable two crude devices who killed two mall employees before turning the gun on himself. >> kids are hiding in the bathroom in the upper areas. >> police are scouring surveillance to make sense of the crime. >> there were a lot of people here at the columbia mall saturday morning at 11:15. this was a scary incident. >> a domestic argument is the leading theory behind the killing of the two employees. 21-year-old mother brianna benlolo, and 24-year-old tyler johnson. the shooting, just outside

washington on saturday, sparked terror for hundreds of shoppers and store employees. >> i heard more than ten shots. >> people running and scream. and i heard boom, boom, boom. >> for many, saving the children became the number one priority. >> i grabbed every kid that i could see and ran into sears to keep them safe. >> it's horrifying. it's just horrifying. just protect the kids. >> reporter: and others didn't know where to go. >> where do you go? you're in a fitting room. you're still just as vulnerable. >> reporter: authorities are trying to piece together how the man entered the mall with so much fire power. >> really what malls have to do is improve their cameras, improve their private security and be able to immediately react. >> reporter: now authorities tell me the shooter had enough ammunition to kill so many more people, but he appeared to only target those two victims. now his name is not being

released, but police are searching his apartment trying to piece together what put him on a path too kill. >> thanks to you. and joined by sandy and her daughter who were at the mall when shots rang out. good morning after what i imagine was a traumatic night. thank you for joining us. >> good morning, thank you. >> and sandy, i want to begin with you. set the scene. you were at a store that was located directly below where the shots rang out, correct? >> yes, that's correct. we were in american eagle in the back in the dressing room area. >> what was the initial thing that you first heard? >> we heard a loud bang and we weren't quite sure what it was. my daughter thought that it could be gun shots, and we were just kind of waiting to see what would happen. then we heard two more. and then finally a fourth. >> and courtney, what did you do then when you realized there were gun shots going off at the mall? where did you go?

>> we were near the dressing room, i was trying clothes on. we got in the dressing room and crouched on top of the bench so that our feet weren't going to be seen under the dressing room. we didn't know what was going on. we just knew there were gun shots. >> can you describe the scene? was it chaos? was it orderly? >> it was surreal. it was really quiet. there was just another lady and her small baby in a dressing room near us. >> your husband, steve, a police officer, was at the mall, did he hear the gun shots too? did he know what was happening? >> he was a little bit closer to the gun shots than we were. he was right near the food court area. he heard ask saw everybody running. >> how long did it take before you talked to him? >> he called immediately probably after the third shot and he did tell us that there were -- there was a shooter in the mall.

so we knew at least that much. and fortunately we were able to stay on the cell phone with him the whole time. that made us feel better. >> and as a police officer, he's trained for these events. was he tell you what to do in the moment? >> he did tell us that we were doing the right thing, and staying there was the correct thing to do. >> let's just talk what you were feeling, what was going on inside? how frightened were you and in you wanted to protect your daughter, courtney as well. >> yes, it was quite scary just because we didn't know what was going on. >> and sandy, in the future is this going to deter you before you head out to another crowded shopping mall? >> it will definitely be in my mind. you know, it's going to always be there. it won't prevent me from going out again. but i think it will be a little while before i do. >> i can imagine. we are so thankful you are okay

and a 19-year-old man is in jail. police in pennsylvania say they initially searched the apartment for drugs, but then something much worse, a bomb they say he was building. the bomb squad safely disabled the device. the suspect is being held on $500,000 bail. and u.s. health officials will board a royal caribbean cruise ship to see why 300 people are sick. it has 4,000 crew members and passenge passengers. they don't know what's causing the apparent outbreak. and an alleged heist in action. looks like a real heist in action. two suspects descending into the store after chopping a hole in the roof. after allegedly grabbing

well as cities around the country. the president has offered major concessions to the opposition which have not been accepted yet. the choice for this country is being allied with russia and vladimir putin or the west, in particular, europe. this is crucial for russia. vladimir putin in the spotlight just ahead of the olympic games. dan. >> thanks very much. now to washington. president obama is getting ready to deliver the sixth state of the union address to congress and the american people tuesday night. and now we have jon karl, hosting abc news's "this week" later this morning. the president has had a rough few months. what does he need to do to get the second term back on track? >> rough year. he has to show what was really the most frustrating, worst year of the obama presidency is behind him. he is going to turn the page. we have started hearing talk

about this being a year of action and opportunity. he will push for action from congress. there are signs he could see progress on a big immigration bill. but the president will make it clear that even with serious opposition in the republican house of representatives, making major legislation difficult if not impossible, he has plans to get things done using the executive powers of his office. >> move to the olympics beginning in less than two weeks in sochi, russia. you'll be talking about security at the game this is morning. what is the administration's biggest worry for the thousands of americans traveling there? >> the worst case scenario is there could be an attack within the olympic venue. that's the disaster scenario. it's also the least likely. u.s. officials were tracking this very carefully say that they believe that the russians have a pretty good handle on securing the olympic venues in the immediate surrounding area.

meteorologist bill evans with us. you're an expert on new jersey this time of year. what can we expect? >> we're a week away, and kickoff is now in the timeline of what we can accurately predict. this morning, it's looking like the seahawks and the broncos as well as the fans are going to have to deal with the cold, the wind, the rain the know. >> the denver broncos. >> the sea bauks going to the super bowl. >> the biggest story may be the weather. what are conditions like in february in new jersey? the players have stats, so does the weather. it's called climatology. we take records from newark and other places a few miles from here and see what it it was like over the past couple of hundred years. we average the temperatures and see what it might be like on super bowl sunday. should ticket-holders be worried? the average temperature will be

above freezing. raining with snow or ice is 35%. but odds are slim that we'll see three inches of snow or more. after clearing 13 inches of snow from the stadium wednesday, metlife is taking precautions, bringing in the massive machines that can melt away millions of cubic feet of snow. not to mention it's making history as the first open-air super bowl to be played north of san francisco. up until now the record low at kickoff at a championship game, a frigid 39 in new orleans back in 1972. but if you think nfl execs are afraid of the cold, think again. >> it's part of the elements. i want to be outside, be there, part of the authentic experience. >> you're going to get it. that beautiful title wetland of new jersey. it won't be as cold. monday or tuesday, it's brutally cold. warm up a little bit. rain or snow at game time. low to mid 30s, dropping.

and the wind is going to be the big focus. the wind blowing from left to right as you face the press box. metlife has been closed on the ends. wind will be out of the northwest. probably the coin toss, one of the most important of the game, the wind will be at their back in the fourth quarter. that's a big development is how the weather pans out with the storm system coming our way. >> it's amazing how important that's going to be as they factor that in creating the strategies. bill, thank you very much. appreciate it. now to the developments in the sex scandal rocking france. the president and his girlfriend called it quits after he was caught cheating with a much-younger actress. it is a couple of weeks before he is scheduled to attend a state dinner at the white house. jeffrey has been watching the political soap opera unfold from london. >> reporter: good morning, soap app a it is. france's president is single.

they were never officially married, but he is now officially on his own. he called her his companion. the french didn't care that valerie wasn't married to president francois holland, but they cared that he had a mistress on the side. i wish to make it known that i have ended my partnership with valerie after two weeks of tabloid headlines. it began when a french gossip magazine saw him hiding under a helmet with his rendezvous. he tried to say it was a private matter. and in france, affairs of state are expected. the president who died in 1996, his wife and misstres stood side by side at the grave. his illegitimate daughter stood with them. but this time it stayed in the

headlines. perhaps because hollande campaigned on a pledge of exemplary behavior. on friday, he met with the pope on his own. we don't know if they discussed personal affairs. and now he's traveling on his own to washington for a rare official state visit. of course, in washington, a scandal like this can ruin a politician's career. >> this state dinner's going to get a lot more attention because of this and it's going to be on everybody's agenda. >> reporter: today she leaves for a long-planned trip to india. she will be traveling as a private citizen, and she will not return to the palace. >> a whole new life for her, jeffrey. and last-minute seating chart scramble at the white house. >> it's reassuring that the scandals are not just in the united states. >> i couldn't fathom a scandal

like that. maybe who bo the dog is dating. and back to bill, sports and weather for us today. >> this is a weather person's dream. super bowl in the town, forecasting the weather. and now it's the cold, the fourth arctic blast. five states under blizzard warnings, the dakotas, minnesota, iowa. remember, a blizzard and whiteout conditions, 30 mile an hour winds for three hours or longer. and to st. cloud, minnesota. tough conditions for travel. not a lot of snow. it's more or less the arctic air mass making it miserable. and this is the coldest air mass of the season. each month we say it's the coldest, the coldest, the coldest. this is really cold. this is getting medieval across the northern portion of the country. minneapolis, 33 below.
