maryland. jeff, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dan. it all happened in an instant, witnesses said, and not a single word was exchanged between the gunman and his two victims before a burst of shotgun blasts sparked an afternoon of horror. over night, bomb squad units worked to secure the deadly scene at the mall in columbia, ad ad. bringing in robots to disable two crude devices who killed two mall employees before turning the gun on himself. >> kids are hiding in the bathroom in the upper level near sears, hearing active shots. >> reporter: this morning, police are scouring surveillance to tapes to try to make sense of the crime. >> there were a lot of people here at the columbia mall saturday morning at 11:15. this was a very scary incident. >> reporter: a domestic argument authorities tell abc news, is the leading theory behind the killing of the two employees at a skate shop. 21-year-old mother brianna benlolo, and 24-year-old tyler johnson. the shooting, just outside washington on saturday, sparked

terror for hundreds of shoppers and store employees. >> everybody ducked to the ground. i heard more than ten shots. >> people running and scream. and i heard boom, boom, boom. >> they were pretty loud. >> reporter: for many, saving the children became the number one priority. >> i grabbed every kid that i could see and ran into sears to keep them safe. >> it's horrifying. it's just horrifying. just protect the kids. >> reporter: and others didn't know where to go. >> where do you go? you're in a fitting room. someone's going to come in, you're still just as vulnerable. >> reporter: authorities are trying to piece together how the man entered the mall with so much fire power. >> really what malls have to do perhaps is improve their cameras, improve their private security and be able to immediately react. >> reporter: now authorities tell me the shooter had enough ammunition to kill so many more people, but he appeared to only target those two victims. now his name is not being released, but police are

searching his apartment trying to piece together what put him on a path too kill. bianna? >> jeff, our thanks to you. we are joined now by sandy berkmire and her daughter, courtney, both shopping at the small when the shots rang out. good morning after what i imagine was a traumatic night. thank you for joining us. >> good morning, thank you. >> and sandy, i want to begin with you. can you set the scene for us? you were at a store that was located directly below where the shots rang out, correct? >> yes, that's correct. we were in american eagle in the back in the dressing room area. >> what was the initial thing that you first heard? >> we heard a loud bang and we weren't quite sure what it was. my daughter thought that it could be gun shots, and we were just kind of waiting to see what would happen. then we heard two more. and then finally a fourth. >> and courtney, what did you do then when you realized there were gun shots going off at the mall? where did you and your mom go?

>> we were already really close to the dressing room because i was actually trying clothes on. we got in the dressing room and crouched on top of the bench so that our feet weren't going to be seen under the dressing room. we didn't know what was going on. we just knew there were gun shots. >> can you describe the scene? around you? were there a lot of people there with you? was it chaos? was it orderly? >> it actually was pretty surreal. because it was really quiet. there was just another lady and her small baby in a dressing room near us. >> your husband, steve, who happens to be a police officer, was at the mall but in a different part of the mall when this happened. did he hear the gunshots too? did he know what was happening? >> he was a little bit closer to the gun shots than we were. he was right near the food court area. so he heard and saw everybody running. >> yes, correct -- >> how long did it take before you talked to him? >> he called immediately probably after the third shot and he did tell us that there were -- there was a shooter in the mall. so we knew at least that much.

and fortunately we were able to stay on the cell phone with him the whole time. that made us feel better. >> and as a police officer, he's trained for these events. was he telling you what to do in the moment? >> he did tell us that we were doing the right thing, and staying in the dressing room was the correct thing to do. >> let's just talk what you were feeling, what was going on inside? how frightened were you and in there, sandy, wanting to protect your daughter, courtney, as well. >> yes, it was quite scary just because we didn't know what was going on. >> and sandy, in the future is this going to deter you before you head out to another crowded shopping mall? >> it will definitely be in my mind. you know, it's going to always be there. it won't prevent me from going out again. but i think it will be a little while before i do. >> i can imagine. we are so thankful you are okay this morning and that are you

of president hosni mubarak. and back here in the u.s., a 19-year-old pennsylvania man is in jail this morning, charged with possessing a weapon of mass destruction. police in pennsylvania say they initially searched the apartment for drugs, but then something much worse, a bomb they say he was building. the bomb squad safely disabled the device. the suspect is being held on $500,000 bail. and u.s. health officials will board a royal caribbean cruise ship today to fry to figure out why more than 300 people on that ship were sickened. it's currently docked in st. thomas with 4,000 crew members and passengers. the cdc says it's unclear what is causing the apparent outbreak. take a look at this jewelry store in plantation, florida. showing an alleged heist in action. looks like a real heist in action. two suspects descending into the store from the roof after chopping a hole in the roof with a pick ax, after allegedly grabbing

$115,000 worth of jewels, they lifted themselves back up to the ceiling and get away. so far. also in florida, a horrifying crash at rolex 24 race at the daytona speedway. a corvette slamming into a ferrari after it was pulling out after losing power. three hours into the race, the crews had to extricate the driver from the car. both drivers were hospitalized. the drivers complained about sun glare during that race. now a warning for the tennis fans. turn away if you're planning to watch the australian open later today, the men's final. because we have the result for you. it just ended. ready? a major upset down under. stanislav wawrinka defeated just a short while ago, top ranked rafael nadal of spain. this is the first grand slam title for the 8th seed wawrinka. i thought he would win. he had never won a set off rafa before. today, he did winning after four

>> cute video, ron, thank you. and turning overseas to the ukraine. a country seen as a vital economic source for russia and europe. the opposition rejecting the president's power-sharing offer, leading the country closer to civil war. hamish macdonald has the latest. >> reporter: it has been another messy and chaotic night in kiev. protestors are back at the ukraine house, the building they stormed over night. this morning, they are reinforcing the front of it, and have control of it. and digging up the ice from the front footsteps to use for sandbags to reinforce their barricades with on the front line between them and the riot police just up here. now it was pretty violent here overnight. we were right in the thick of it when the protesters were lobbing fire crackers, flaming objects, rocks into the building. and the police trapped inside were sending water spraying back out, as well as some of the rocks they were receiving. today will be crucial. over 100,000 people expected on the streets of the capital as well as cities around the country.

the president has offered major concessions to the opposition which have not been accepted yet. the choice for this country is between being allied with russia and vladimir putin or in the west, in particular, europe. this comes at a crucial time too for russia. vladimir putin in the spotlight just ahead of the olympic games. dan. >> thanks very much. now to washington. president obama is getting ready to deliver the sixth state of the union address to congress and the american people tuesday night. here with a preview is abc news chief white house correspondent, jon karl, hosting abc news' "this week" later this morning. the president has had a rough few months. what does he need to do to get the second term back on track? >> yeah, a rough year, really. he has to show what was really the most frustrating, worst year of the obama presidency is behind him. he is going to turn the page. you'll hear talk -- we have started hearing talk about this being a year of

action and a year of opportunity. he will push for action from congress. there are signs he could see actually see progress on a big immigration bill. but the president will make it clear that even with serious opposition in the republican house of representatives, making major legislation difficult if not impossible, he has plans to get things done using the executive powers of his office. >> let's move to the olympics. beginning in less than two weeks in sochi, russia. i'm sure that you'll be talking about security at the games this morning. what is the administration's biggest worry for the thousands of americans traveling there? >> the worst case scenario is the idea there could be an attack within the olympic venue. that's the disaster scenario. it's also the one they see as the least likely. u.s. officials are tracking this very carefully say that they believe that the russians have a pretty good handle on securing the olympic venues in the immediate surrounding area. the biggest concern is softer targets outside of what putin

forecast in new jersey this time of year. what can we expect? >> we're a week away, and kickoff is now in the timeline of what we can accurately predict. this morning, it's looking like the seahawks and the broncos as well as the fans are going to have to deal with the cold, the wind, the rain, the snow. >> the denver broncos. >> the seahawks are going to the super bowl! >> the biggest story surrounding super bowl xlviii may be the weather. what can we expect conditions to be like in february in new jersey? the players have stats, so does the weather. it's called climatology. we take weather records from lindenhurst and newark, new jersey, places just a few miles from here and find out what the weather has been like over the past couple hundreds years. we take that, we average the temperatures and see what it might be like on super bowl sunday. should ticket-holders be worried? according to climatology, the average temperature for kickoff will be above freezing.

the chance of precipitation, rain, snow or race is 35%. but odds are slim that we'll see three inches of snow or more. after clearing 13 inches of snow from the stadium wednesday, metlife is taking precautions, bringing in the massive machines that can melt away millions of cubic feet of snow. not though mention this year's venue is making history as the first open air super bowl to be played north of san francisco. up until now the record low at kickoff for an outdoor championship game, a frigid 39 degrees in new orleans back in 1982. but if you think nfl execs are afraid of the cold, think again. >> we're new york. it's part of the elements. i want to be outside, be there, part of the authentic experience. >> you're going to get it. if you're going to the super bowl, that beautiful title wetland of new jersey. it won't be as cold. the super bowl were to be held monday or tuesday, it's brutally cold. warm up a little bit. there could be rain or snow at game time.

temperatures will be in the low to mid 30s, dropping. and the wind is going to be the big focus. the wind blowing from left to right as you face the press box. it's not as win dip as the old meadowlands stadium. metlife has been closed on the ends. wind will be out of the northwest. probably the coin toss, one of the most important of the game, the coaches want to have the wind will be at their back in the fourth quarter. that's a big development is how the weather pans out with the storm system coming our way. dan? >> it's amazing how important that's going to be as they factor that in creating the strategies for each team. bill, thank you very much. appreciate it. now to the developments in the sex scandal rocking france. the country's president and his girlfriend have called it quits after he was caught cheating with a much younger actress. the messy public breakup comes just a couple weeks before he is scheduled to attend a state dinner at the white house. jeffrey kofman has been watching the soap opera unfold from london. good evening, jeffrey. >> reporter: good morning, soap opera, it is. france's president is single.

he and the first lady were never officially married but he is now officially on his own. he called her his companion. the french didn't care that valerie trierweiler wasn't married to president francois hollande but they do seem to care that he had a mistress on the side. i wish to make it known that i have ended my partnership with valerie trierweiler after two weeks of tabloid headlines. it began when a french gossip magazine published these photos of him hiding around helmet for a rendezvous with his misstress, a much younger act stress. he tried to say it was a private matter. and in france, affairs of state are expected. the president who died in 1996, his wife and mistress stood side by side at the grave. his illegitimate daughter stood with them. but this time it stayed in the headlines. perhaps because hollande campaigned on a pledge of

exemplary behavior. perhaps because she was unpopular. on friday, he met with the pope on his own. we don't know if they discussed personal affairs. and now it seems hollande will be traveling on his own to washington next month for a rare official state visit. of course, in washington, a scandal like this can ruin a politician's career. >> this state dinner's going to get a lot more attention because of this and it's going to be on everybody's agenda. >> reporter: today she leaves for a long-planned trip to india. she will be traveling as a private citizen, and she will return to paris and not return to the palace. dan? >> a whole new life for her, jeffrey. and last-minute seating chart scramble at the white house. >> it's reassuring that the scandals are not just in the united states. right? >> yes. >> they have their own problems. >> i couldn't fathom a scandal close to that. maybe who bo the dog is dating.

back over to bill for the national forecast, sports and weather for us today, bill. >> this is a weather person's dream. super bowl in the town, forecasting the weather. really, the important thing in the forecast today is this cold, the fourth arctic blast coming across the northern plains. five states under blizzard warnings, the dakotas, minnesota, iowa. and just white outs, wind gusts 50 miles an hour. remember, a blizzard and whiteout conditions, 30 mile an hour winds for three hours or longer. blowing snow. drifting snow. and to st. cloud, minnesota. tough conditions for travel. here in the overnight hours. not a lot of snow. it's more or less the arctic air mass that has been pouring in that is just making it miserable. and this is the coldest air mass of the season. each one, we keep saying, it's the coldest, the coldest. this is really cold. this is mother nature getting medieval across the northern portion of the country. minneapolis, 33 below. and duluth, 47 below zero.

short stroll near her in-laws' home. reena ninean has more on the efforts to find her. >> reporter: searching by foot, with dogs and helicopters. looking for the woman who went on a walk and never returned. overnight, the family telling us why they feel so helpless. police conducted a search around the area that she was last seen. no sign of the 33-year-old woman. authorities do not suspect foul play. with no answers, family and friends say sitting still is impossible. >> we have exhausted the area surrounding our city, and we will continue to follow all leads. >> we searched about 23 square miles, including some areas beyond what we would typically consider a cone of -- of area where a missing person might be. >> we have no idea what has happened. we have no clues whatsoever. and the police department briefed us, and they have no clues as to where she might be.

in the news -- investigators in maryland are trying to figure out why a heavily armed man opened fire at a crowded mall on saturday. two workers at a skate shop were killed before the gunman turned the gun on himself. and the popular arts and crafts store michael's is investigating a possible data breach that may have affected its customers' payment cards. this is after target and neiman marcus had massive breaches affecting tens of millions of their customers. and a historic event at dodger stadium in l.a. it was not baseball, but hockey. and the ballpark, transformed into a hockey rink for a first tif ever outdoor match between the l.a. kings and the anaheim ducks. the ducks beat the kings 3-0. at game tonight at yankee stadium. and finally, amazing ice. check out the wintry ice caves in wisconsin. thanks to the arctic air across the country, people are braving the frigid temperatures to
