good morning, america. breaking now, whiteout. that bitter cold and howling wind shutting down huge portions of the midwest this morning. wind chills 45 below. schools closed from minneapolis to chicago. and heavy snow for the deep south on the way. the olympic torch is running through a home base for a terror group that has directly threatened the olympic games. the brand new warning about a terror attack with just 11 days left before the olympics. sick ship. the massive cruise liner reversing course after 600 fall violently ill. now heading back to its home port. cdc officials on board investigating the outbreak. look, blue, daddy got a gold sippy cup for you. >> the first couple of music steaming up the grammys with a sizzling performance. beyonce and jay s center stage.

winter storm warnings up in south and north carolina. 3 to 5 inches of snow for parts of southern mississippi, southern alabama, atlanta is in the winter storm watch. up to 7 inches plus of snow in parts of north carolina. they don't get this. they don't have the capabilities. the salt, the plow trucks. just doesn't happen down there. this is going to be paralyzing for the south. new orleans hasn't seen measurable snow in -- since 2009. look at the ice. if you don't get snow, you get freezing rain. it will be a sloppy mess. of course there's a ton of really cold air inspiring all that. 21 below, des moines, what it feels like. minneapolis, the windchill this morning is 36 below. and that's where we find our alex perez. good morning, alex. >> reporter: well, good morning, ginger. this morning, public schools in minneapolis, chicago, other areas are closed. to give you an idea, this is supposed to be a water fountain. it's so cold, it's frozen like a big block of ice. this morning, the midwest waking

up to some of the coldest temperatures all season. in north dakota, snow blowing. howling wind chills as low as 50 degrees below zero. this natural gas pipeline explosion in canada causing a gas shortage in parts of the upper midwest. thousands of residents being asked to turn down their thermostats. >> your heart jumps up in your throats to are we going to have enough heat to protect our homes? >> reporter: overnight, this high school hockey team had to spend the night at a youth shelter after driving through this. a whiteout in southern minnesota. >> we couldn't even see the road. the highway patrolmen told us we couldn't go any further. >> reporter: in massachusetts, a horse up to its neck in freezing mud. rescuers ended up using a crane to finally get it out. in trenton, new jersey, this dog on the icy delaware river for more than four hours. two good samaritans finally

using a kayak to tow him to safety. even after police warned him it was too dangerous. >> just went out and got him. >> reporter: in central park, caitlin risked her life saving her puppy's life. jumping into the lake to rescue him after he dove in during a walk. they were pulled to safety by a police officer who threw them a life preserver. new york city's east river transformed into blocks of jagged ice. there is beauty to be found. for the first time in five years, lake superior is so frozen solid, visitors can walk across and right into the stunning ice caves. and they say this water fountain here has been frozen solid for about a month. across the midwest, authorities have one piece of advice today. stay inside. lara? >> great advice, alex, thank you. we turn to the latest on the olympic torch and the marathon journey. now in a very violent part of russia, still reeling from recent terrorist attacks. brian ross is here with the

latest on the security alerts surrounding the winter games. good morning to you, brian. >> reporter: british security firms have concluded a terror attack is likely before or during the olympics, according to a stark new assessment reported by the bbc. all is this as the russians continue to insist they don't need any help but have the situation in hand. this morning, the olympic torch relay continued across russia and moved into potentially dangerous territory. dagestan, home base for the terrorist group that declared war against russia and the nearby winter games. but russian officials maintain there is no danger. >> it's a wonderful place for olympics, first. secondly, it's not close to the war zone. there is no war zone in russia. >> reporter: but with a week and a half to go, sochi is taking on the look of a hardened fortress. u.s. athletes will begin to arrive here this week. instructed not to wear their

distinctive uniforms outside the olympic village to avoid being targeted. >> can you reassure our athletes going to sochi that they'll be safe? >> i cannot give them a 100% guarantee. the fact is that these are going to be very much threatened olympics. probably more than any we've had in our past. >> reporter: russian police in the olympic city have not located this 22-year-old woman from dagestan, despite a frantic search. who is one of the so-called black widow suicide bombers presents a daunting challenge. >> they have to try to defeat the toughest i.e.d. challenge there is. a suicide bomber in a crowd. there is no silver bullet. there's no technology. there's some facial recognition. some body scanning. it's not fool-proof. >> reporter: the russians continue to insist on a go it alone stance. american authorities are left in the dark to the intelligence and the plans that will be put in place in just 11 days, lara. >> a lot of questions. scary, brian.

>> such a blunt threat. now to the markets and your money. all eyes on wall street this morning after the dow's worst week in more than a year. rebecca jarvis is here with more. >> reporter: yes, george. my sources on wall street say this volatility that we'll be seeing will be here for some time to come. the typical american family's 401(k) lost about 10%. it gained about $30,000 last year. what's been spooking the markets of late? first of all, china. the world's second largest economy they see things slowing down there. they're manufacturing is getting slower and there's a number of companies here in the united states that do business with china. that could be a bad sign for u.s. businesses slowing down. also the u.s. consumer is pulling back on its spending. and there are big open-ended questions about the federal reserves next big move. that will come this week. it's a very significant one. everyone on wall street waiting for ben bernanke's next word. >> what else are investors looking at?

>> all the earnings reports. amazon, apple, google. they're all coming out with earnings. most americans own these companies this their retirement savings. >> thank you, rebecca. let's get today's other top stories from josh. a massive avalanche cut off an entire town, leaving 4,000 people isolated. the only highway into valdez, alaska, is buried under 30 feet of ice and snow. it could take days to clear it. cleanup efforts are being delayed by fears of more avalanche activity. store shelves in the town are empty, help is on the way. a barge packed with supplies is said to be arriving into port later today. and a developing story. affecting air travel. the faa is ordering new safety checks on hundreds of boeing 767s. because a malfunction could cause pilots to lose control of the aircraft. abc's jim avila has the new details. good morning to you, jim. >> reporter: good morning, josh. if you fly overseas, you have probably flown aboard a 767. the airlines love them --

delta, american, united -- because it can fly long distances on just two engines. saving fuel. it has a long safety record. for 13 years, a stubborn problem with the tail assembly that could, in theory, cause pilots to lose control. and today reports the wall street journal the aaa is asking them to permanently fix the safety issue with parts and tests just developed by boeing. it's not an emergency fix. since the temporary fixes have kept the 767 in the air for more than a decade now. the potential for a jammed tail is serious enough for the faa to order all 400 767s operating in the u.s. to be retrofitted within six years. josh? >> thank you, jim. also new this morning, florida congressman trey radel resigning. over seas a u.s. air strike in somalia targeted a car in a

small southern village. u.s. officials acknowledged the attack but will not confirm reports that a commander of the al shabaab military group was in the car it struck. protesters in the ukraine, angry that their government deepened ties with russia, took over the justice ministry overnight. the government is threatening a new crackdown if the protesters don't leave the building. back in this country, new details about a frightening crash at daytona this weekend. the driver, memo gidley, was apparently blinded by the sun. he didn't see another car that had hit its brakes in front of him. gidley broke his back. but is said to be in good spirits. thankfully the other driver involved in that crash is okay. finally, maybe the man in your life is more scruffy these days. perhaps even fully bearded. it's becoming something of a hairy problem for razor companies. sales are dropping. dropping so fast that gillette is said to be blaming movember, the charity effort that encourages guys to grow their hair for prostate cancer

awareness. those in the know say guys are just going hairier. i find it's not a sound business business plan, however, to blame the goodwill of your potential clientele and not buying your raisers. >> that was a hair scratcher. head scratcher. >> all right, thank you, josh. we move on to chilling new details of the murders at a mall in maryland this weekend. still unclear why a teenager opened fire killing two other young people before turning the gun of himself. this morning, we're learning about the gunman from his stunned and sad mother. abc's jeff zeleny has the story. >> reporter: overnight, police are poring over a journal seized from this house. where darion aguilar lived with his mother. it could hold clues. to what inspired his deadly weekend rampage at an upscale maryland shopping mall. >> there is a journal. he does express some general unhappiness with his life. >> reporter: 19 years old and out of school less than a year, he walked into a skateboarding shop and fired six to eight

shots. he killed two and caused terror for hundreds. >> kids are hiding in the bathroom in the upper level near the sears, hearing active shots. >> reporter: his victims, tyler johnson, 25, and brianna benlolo a 21-year-old single mother. her instagram account reads live every day for today. authorities are still searching for a motive. >> darion is a good kid. don't know what happened. >> reporter: we visited his home just outside washington. his mother didn't answer the door but spoke briefly by telephone. she sobbed, telling abc news her son was gentle and never had interest in guns. but police say he did. he bought a shotgun last month. a 12-gauge mossberg and kept it hidden as a taxicab dropped him off at the mall. authorities say surveillance tape show him sitting and walking around for nearly an hour. blending in with hundreds of shoppers. the gunfire lasted only moments but sparked an afternoon of chaos.

as the mall reopens today, fresh worry. >> i don't bring my kids to ma'ams because i have four little ones. i can't save them all. >> reporter: for "good morning america," jeff zeleny, abc news. columbia, maryland. and to the cruise ship coming home earlier this morning. hundreds of passenger too sick to sail. federal health officials are on board investigating right now. john muller has the story. >> reporter: this morning, what some are calling a giant floating petri dish now making its way back to the states. the royal caribbean "explorer of the seas" reversing course after more than 600 people fell violently ill. the first cases reported less than 24 hour after the ship left new jersey. the cruise then skipped its planned stop in haiti heading straight for puerto rico and st. thomas. that's where officials from the cdc boarded the ship to investigate sunday. >> it just felt like one of the worst stomach bugs i have ever

had in my life. >> reporter: this passenger speaking to us after learning hours that her vacation is being cut two days short. >> i am completely disappointed. we were really, really looking forward to this all year. >> reporter: right now, the cause of the outbreak is unclear. royal caribbean says the symptoms appear to be consistent with that of norovirus. the bug responsible for seven outbreaks on stomach illness on cruise ships last year. >> they have been scrubbing the entire ship top to bottom, nonstop. >> reporter: in a statement overnight, royal caribbean said, we think the right thing to do is to bring our guests home early and use the extra time to sanitize the ship more thoroughly. and while they said they'll compensate guests, they warn additional cases are to be expected. for "good morning america," john muller, abc news, new york. >> oh, that sounds so miserable. let's get something happier, please. >> happily. we're going to shift gears to an awesome night. grammys, baby. music's biggest names gathering

a family member says 22-year-old richard was at the home with about 30 other people celebrating his girlfriend's 21st birthday. at some point a fight broke out and fann was stabbed to death trying to break up the fight. it is san jose's fourth homicide of the year. monday morning traffic now. we've had very diminished visibility because of fog this morning. in san francisco not quite as foggy but southbound along highway one as you make it through the mcarthur tunnel 8 miles per hour your top speed there. a live look outside. here is a peek at the fog through san jose northbound along 280 as you come away from 880 looking busy there. eric? >> leyla, thank you. mike

leanne bearden disappeared while out on a walk. reena ninan joins us. >> reporter: right now, police say they have no reason to suspect foul play. her husband ruled out as a potential suspect. they're asking for the public's health. they had just fulfilled a dream traveling the world together for two years. now, her husband living a nightmare. >> it's been nine nights. it feels like a thousand years. it's like you fell off a cliff. because my best friend is gone. >> reporter: about a month after returning from their trip around the world, she went missing. last seen friday january 17th after going for a walk near her in-laws home in texas. >> landscapers saw her leave and head north. from there, we have zero clues.

>> reporter: law enforcement agencies have scoured the area. no sign of the missing marketing graj waut. >> we've exhausted the area surrounding our city. >> reporter: so far, police have rule out foul play. josh says his 33-year-old wife left the house with only her wallet. he's handed over his laptop to police an he says he's constantly checking his wife's credit card for any activity. nothing has changed. >> we're kind of at a loss. we don't know what to do for now. >> reporter: perhaps for heart breaking, they were preparing for their next stop, denver. and the next adventure. >> the next phase of life was to start a family. >> reporter: he has one desperate plea for the woman he loves more than anything else in the world. >> if somebody has you, then -- just hang in there. we'll find you. but a lot of people are looking for you. we're never, ever going to stop looking for you ever.

suspected, no one has ever seen the person leave the house. no one is able to corroborate the account. in this case, this landscaper is saying, i saw her leave the house alone. exactly as the husband lays it out. so i think now the authorities really want to look around in that area, scour the area. hope, hope, hope that maybe there was an accident and she fell. she's in need of help. >> critical. day are treating this as a search. >> they have to for now. there's though reason not to. and remember, there's also no reason to suspect the husband. the only reason i'm talking about this so much is that's what's beginning on in the mind of the investigators. they want to first rule him out and then move forward, though they'll do it on dual tracks. >> thank you, dan. now to something new with josh. >> i believe robin wanted to watch this at home. a big day for us here.

regimen, whether you're pregnant or not, check with your doctor. go through it. doctors used to say no exercise in pregnancy. now, it's the opposite. exercise in pregnancy is good for your heart. it's good for your mood, sleep, flexibility. it will help you through labor and delivery. it's a good thing to do. you have to be careful. >> if you're already doing something, you keep doing it? >> as long as it's something safe. anything involving balance. horseback riding, skateboarding, roller blading, skiing, i would avoid those. the weight will shift your balance. the joints get loose because of pregnancy. you have to be careful. >> what would you suggest for pregnant women of all ages, shapes, sizes, weights? >> so you know, if you like it, you're more likely to stick with it. if you like to walk, continue to walk. that's terrific. swimming is a wonderful exercise. >> that's the best. >> a stable exercise bike. after the first trimester, nothing flat on your back. the weight of the belly can cut down on the blood flow to the uterus.

good morning. kansas police are warning female students at san jose state university this morning to be on alert after two assaults on students. both assaults took place on campus saturday night. police say a man on a bike attacked the woman. the second incident happened 9:20 near the hoover hall dorm. witnesses say the attacker was a white man in his 20s with a mustache wearing a black hoodie and pants. many students learned about the assault via text message sent by the university. we'll see how your morning commute is going. we have a sig alert northbound 101 as you approach highway 12. an accident involving a big rig. we are working on bumper to bumper traffic as you approach
