i'm marci gonzalez in for diana perez. >> i'm john muller. another brutal cold snap for the upper midwest and rare snow and ice storm for the south. >> the national weather service shall ared winter storm watches and warnings from virginia all the way down to the gulf coast. >> parts of the carolinas could be buried under as much as a half a foot of snow. a rare southern winter storm stretching more than 1200 miles is expected to dump snow and ice from southern virginia into south texas. >> folks will be tempted to go out and cruise neighborhoods and want to look for the ice. don't do it. enjoy being at home. stay off the roads. >> reporter: residents were ordered to stay off the roads in south bend, indiana, to make way for an overnight blitz of know plows. >> we have a list of areas where the drifts are worse than others and make sure we don't lose those lanes. >> reporter: many communities are now running out of road salt. not that it's doing much help in

these frigid temperatures. >> a lot of spinouts as the roads are icy due to the temperatures and salt doesn't work too well. gives you traction but only where the salt is. it's not melting anything. >> reporter: in parts of ohio a rare combination of ice, wind and snow have created these strange formations called snow rollers. and in chicago this morning an even stranger site, minus 16 on the thermometer expected this morning. schools are closed again in chicago, minneapolis and st. paul. kids are going stir crazy and parents are getting frustrated. >> although it's cold i don't understand why cps is closed. >> it throws everyone into chaos and it doesn't need to be. they could go into school, stay in school. don't need to have outdoor recess. >> reporter: if you're flying check your airline. thousands of flights are already canceled. now meantime, depending on where you live air travel might be the least of your worries. >> for million of the americans the plunging mercury is making for downright dangerous

temperatures. accuweather meteorologist jim dickey has the latest. >> good morning, staying brutally cold across the north and east once again this morning. minus 20 early morning low minneapolis, minus 14 in chicago. minus 3 in omaha. the cold moved in. minus 5 in pittsburgh and minus 10 into detroit. this is the real not the real feel temps. above average temps in alaska created a headache for one big town. the only road into valdez, alaska, will be closed indefinitely after getting blocked by a string of avalanches. crews hoped to clear the snow within a week but they now say it is too dangerous. snow and ice piled up 50 feet high cut off a river and forred a lake on the highway. the town is still accessible by sea and air.

>> well, pressure is on. president obama tonight as he delivers his fifth state of the union address. abc's mary bruce has a preview. >> reporter: it's a make or break night for a struggling white house. >> the president of the united stat states. >> reporter: the state of the union, a chance for president obama to sell his agenda to the american public. the expected laundry list of priorities will be familiar. >> background check, comprehensive immigration reform. raise the federal minimum wage. >> reporter: it's a road map aimed at boosting the middle class but this speech will focus less on lofty ambitions and more on what can be aef chooed. the president will say he's not going to wait for lawmakers to act. >> where i can act on my own without congress i'm going to do so. >> reporter: a chance for the president to turn the page after the botched health carrollout but he faces an uphill battle. according to the latest abc n news/"washington post" poll, 37% believe the president has the ability to make the right decisions for the country.

>> the president sees this as a year of action to work with congress where he can and to bypass congress where necessary. >> reporter: but could this unilateral strategy make republicans even less likely to comprise compromise? >> i think it has a certain amount of arrogance. >> reporter: to make progress on his most substantial ones he will need congress' help. now the state of the union is also a chance for the president to inspire the nation. guests invited to sit in the first lady's box include survivors of the boston marathon bombing and immigration activists and the first opening gay nba player. john? >> all right, mary bruce live in washington. thank you. and, of course, abc news will broadcast the state of the union address and republican response beginning at 9 eastern 6:00 pacific. under a compromise spending will be reduced by about 1%.

benghazi attack. four americans including the ambassador were killed. but while she called it a regret, she did not apologize. >> you make these choices based on imperfect information and you make them -- as we say, to the best of your ability but that doesn't mean there's not going to be unforeseen compromises or twists or turns. >> she says she has not made up her mind about a white house run in 2016. jury selection is under way in the corruption trial of former new orleans mayor ray nagin accused of accepting bribes for trips and other valuables in exchange for granting city contracts and other favors. nagin was mayor during hurricane katrina and left office in 2010. the corruption investigation has already led to convictions for several of his former associates. well, we learned overnight pete seeger has died here in new york at the age of 94. ♪

welcome back. shares of apple likely to be under pressure today following the company's latest quarter report. the company says it sold 51 million iphones last quarter. that's a record. the problem is, wall street analysts were expecting about 56 million to be sold. that disappointing report comes with stocks on a five-day losing streak. so far this year, the dow is down 4.5%. southwest airlines will start its first international flights in july. those flights will bring travelers from three u.s. airports to aruba, jamaica and the bahamas. by the end of the year, southwest expects to be serving 96 destinations in 6 countries. and a big change coming to the movie theaters.

the national association of theater owners is calling for trailers to be cut down. they will be limited to two minutes beginning october 1st but there will be two exemptions per year per movie distributor. trailers for those releases can run up to three minutes. all right, some automotive history on display. in germany, check this out, it's the p1, the first car ever designed by ferdinand porsche. >> it hit the streets in 1898 and the company says it had been sitting in a shed in austria since 1902. the p1 was electric powered and could hit a top speed of 21 miles an hour. as we know, porsches have gotten a lot faster since then. >> that's awesome. finally, procter & gamble says it is about to inject some excitement into brushing your teeth. >> that is thanks to a new line of toothpastes called crest be, which come in flavors such as mint chocolate trek and other flavors in stores in the next few days. >> chocolate toothpaste.

if you're flying, airport delays possible in houston, new orleans, atlanta and charlotte. the family of a missing woman in texas is holding out hope that she'll soon be found. >> leann bearden disappeared from her in-laws' home near san antonio. after saying she was going out for a walk, police have found no evidence. they've stopped searching. her husband will continue looking on his own. >> i feel leann could have walked and been out of that search area in, say, 40 minutes. so i feel that there's a lot more territory that needs to be covered. >> the couple had just returned from a two-year trip around the world. a cruise ship loaded with sick passengers is returning to new jersey tomorrow. royal caribbean says most of the 600 people who fell violently ill from an apparent stomach bug are now up and about.

"the explorer of the seas" will be sanitized a third time after it docks. guests will get a 50% refund and a 50% credit for a future cruise. scary moments for dozens of passengers landing in chicago. the pilot of the republic airlines flight, which was operating as american eagle called for an emergency evacuation forcing more than 60 people to slide down chutes in the freezing cold. the airline said the plane had landed safely but a flight deck instrument warned of a possible issue. no one was seriously hurt. all right, a trial that just got under way in virginia could change how people rate businesses online. contractor chris fear dietz is suing a former client for $750,000 after she criticized his company. jane perez posted reviews on yelp and angie's list complain thank dietz did shoddy work on her home. he claims that those negative reviews have cost him jobs, and he is countersuing. there was a bit of a surprise for actor jude law while he was testifying at a phone hacking trial of some british journalists. while on the witness stand law

was told for the first time that a close family member allegedly sold stories about him to members of britain's tabloid press. law was shown the person's name on a piece of paper, but it was not shown to anyone else. all right. here's something that is being shown to everyone else. if you've ever wondered what it looks like to crash a ship on purpose, well, here you go, the "m.f. austin spirit" was a ferry that spent most of its time shuttling back and forth across the english channel. well, since it was slated to be broken up for scrap, the captain figured, hey, why not, and that's how it arrived at the shipyard, breaking yard in turkey. my goodness. >> full steam ahead. >> wow. all right. two men have been arrested here in new york for trying to sell fake tickets to the super bowl. we're told one of the suspects had state of the art equipment which produced tickets with legitimate bar codes. >> anyone who bought one of those tickets may have access to the stadium only to find out that someone else is in their seat. investigators think he may have

spotted. this is a picture of tyler simmons. he is 16. we told he has mental capacity of an eight-year-old and he is antisocial. he has been missing since last night. they have only lived here a year and a half moving here from fremont. the family was searching for him yesterday afternoon. a custodian saw him here on campus at 7:00 last night. the family searched this area and called in police at 8:15 when the officers took over and searched the campus overnight. they do not suspect foul play. they are asking for the community to keep an eye out for him and if you see him to call police. thank you. a convicted sex offender and kidnapper is in jail after trying to get on the campus of an elementary school. police arrested theodore lo
