>> morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, february 2nd. let's have a quick first look at the whether with meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. look what we have here, rain. pushing along the coast, cloverdale, santa rosa, further away from fran and the south bay but embedded in it is a few lightning strike. we could zoo some moderate rain throughout the day today, and, in fact, the entire day as the system pushes through. starting in north bay and by sunrise it should push through san francisco. it will be hucking the coastline so we are looking at rainfall totals highest there, anywhere

from a quarter to half-inch but likely the entire bay area will see rain today. doing little to help us with the drought, but still welcome rain. 30s and 40s right now with 350s throughout the afternoon. so a much cooler afternoon with mid-to upper 50s around the bay for the warmest locations and then we will clear out quickly. a return to dry weather, but there is more rain in thesendy outlook. i'll show it to you coming up. >> thank you, lisa. we have developing news out of napa where police are investigating the death of a four-year-old girl found dead in her bed. police are looking for the girl's mother, sarah krueger, and her boyfriend, ryan winner. they were last seen leaving their apartment yesterday morning. police say the girl was found around 1:00 yesterday afternoon at an apartment on wilkins avenue. they have not released details on how she died but say there are signs of foul play. the mother and her boyfriend

were last season carrying luggage out of their apartment. >> saw her leaving with duffel bags and the boyfriend and no child. are there were three of them living there. there were only supposed to be just her and her child living there. >> authorities say they don't own a car. in break news overnight, police are investigating the shooting deaths of two people in oakland. it happened around 11:00 last night on 24th street near market. one of the victims was a teenager, another a man in his 30s. police say they were found on the sidewalk in front of a boys and girls club with multiple gunshot wounds. >> officers arrived on scene. ambulance and fire responded. they tried to attempt first aid but unfortunately both victims were pronounced on scene.

>> police say they do not have any leads. police in fremont have located an elderly minnesota with moderate dementia who had been missing since yesterday afternoon. 86-year-old robert sterling was last seen on gertrude drive around 4:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon. police say this morning sterling has been located and taken back home. this morning a pedestrian is fighting for his life after being struck by a consider in san francisco's bayview district. it happened just after 6:30 last night on hudson avenue. that's about a block from the young glad-coleman playground. the driver did stay at the scene. new details this morning. investigators say nurse at san francisco general hospital and the sheriff's deputy share the blame in the death of a woman found in the hospital stairwell last fall. accord together san francisco chronicle, federal investigators say nurses failed to act on a

doctor's order that lynn spalding be watched around the clock. she vanished from her room on september 21st. they also concluded that a sheriffs deputy was told to search the hospital stare as well as for spalding but he understood it as something he could do if he had free time. spalding's body was found 17 days later during a routine check. the oakland teenager accused of killing his sister during a fight over laundry will be in court tomorrow. 17-year-old justice was shot to death inside an oakland apartment last month. police say her 14-year-old brother killed her because she bleached some of his clothing. he turned himself in last week. justice leaves behind a three-year-old daughter. oakland police have arrested two men in connection with a violent home robbery. officers say the two armed suspects kicked in the door at a house on 17th street at 9:00 yesterday morning. they pointed guns at an 18-month-old toddler, telling family members to keep the baby

quiet. it was the second home invasion robbery in the same neighborhood in a week. >> i was really shocked to see there was a shooting in this neighborhood. it's been a very quiet neighborhood and i'm worried about the people who live here. if they can't be safe in the middle of day, it's really an outrage and we need to do something. >> thanks to witnesses, the suspects were taken into custody just a few blocks away. neighbors have talked about hiring private security, but no final decision has been made. turning now to california's drought, very little rain and little water in reserve. it is so bad some people are turning to the power of prayer to bring rain to california. abc7 news reporter sergio has the details. >> drying out reservoirs and parks lake beds, images of the ongoing drought in california. but some by area residents say they aren't sure everybody understands how bad the situation >> maybe they hear it on tv and

they are like, oh, there's a shortage of water but they around getting the whole idea. but it's not raining much and we around getting water period. >> the state announced it would stop water deliveries to local agencies if the drought continues and san francisco announced they would cut water use by 10%. >> we are asking everyone, everybody to chip in. this is a serious issue that we are facing. >> that means san francisco recreation and parks will be scaling back when they water the city's 220 parks and green spaces. >> i grew up with six kids. we had five minute showers. get in, get out really quick. >> he lives if oakland where the east bay district water board will be meeting in a little over a week to decide if they will adopt new water restrictions as well. this man lives in los altos. >> i tried to speak to a few neighbors of mine and the

sprinklers are on twice a day. i couldn't change their minds. >> in group is praying for rain. >> in cases of extreme drought, they taught the muslim community about 1400 years ago in arabia, they had droughts as well. so whenever that happened he had a special prayer he did. >> the prayer was organized by the san francisco chapter of the council on american islamic relations. abc7 news. >> in response to the drought a central valley bond micker plans to introduce it. farmers and experts back the plan saying without it, the central valley will keep suffering. one farmer said no water, well, just can't plant much >> receiptality for me this year is i'm going to have to set aside about 40% of the property that i farm of the 1100 acres. >> several farmers are already

taking the similar steps, warning a loss of jobs will follow if the water bond proposal gets enough support, it will be on the november ballot. the drought is considered one of the worst in california history. back in 2013, that was last year, there was less rain than in any year since california became a state. most of the state experienced record dry, including the bay area. the only exceptions, parts of southern california. based on date you from tree rings, cal scientist lynn ingram said the current season is on pace to be the driest since 1580. so maybe we are going to get a little shot of something today? >> we are. we certainly are. i have good news. rain is just offshore right now. it is cloudy around the bay. 48 degrees in san francisco. up in the north bay a few light sprinkles already. so count on a rainy day today! nice thing to say. i'll show you when and how much when we return. >> thank you, lisa. also ahead, it is groundhog day.

forecast. seven people >> including three children, are displaced after a fire spread through an part meant complex in gilroy. investigators say that fire started in a kitchen last night. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has the details. >> the things that made these apartments home to seven people are destroyed. the fire started in unit number 11's kitchen around 6:30. it took just a few minutes to burn the two-bedroom apartment. >> once it got going if burning the contents of this apartment, it broke through the windows and then kim up through and got into the windows of the upstirs. >> the two men in that apartment got out safely. they quickly caused other neighbors to help. >> i went outside and i seen the other guy with the fire. >> he did more than that, he jumped into the burning apartment must be 11 to see if anyone was trapped.

luckily the family of five went home and salazar made it out with only a few cuts on his hands. the fire was already out by the time the family got home and saw what was left. a relative told me the kitchen stove has been malfunctioning for months. >> it sounded to me like an electrical problem. but she had been complaining we still have the problem, we still have the problem. >> until investigators piece together what happened, those living in the complex's other eight units had no choice but to stand by and wait. this man grabbed a few pairs of clothes in case the entire building would be off-limits, but it wasn't for just about everyone. apartment managers gave those in the burnt units a flies stay in another complex. in gilroy, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> an explosion during a fire in sausalito last with night was captured on video.

flames caused a quarter million damage too dive shop on liberty ship way which is right on the water. firefighters had a tough time fighting the flames bus the only access was on a narrow dock. a memorial service was held in san jose yesterday for the five family members killed in a plane crash. the tech executive, his son, daughter-in-law and her fiancee all died when the single engine plane he was piloting crashed in idaho. yesterday a three hour service at the church of jesus christ of latter day saints remembered the victims for their faith and dedication. the plane disappeared in a remote part of idaho back on december 3rd. researchers looked for days until the search was called off because of poor weather conditions on november 9th. private efforts to find the family continued until january 10th when the plane was found by smith's brother. the bodies were recovered from

that's why we still have jobs. good morning, everyone. we are looking at live doppler 7hd. we are very active. we are looking at showers for pretty much everyone around the by. but amounts will vary widely. this is due to how close the low will be to the coast. here we are looking at some development offshore. it's not raining yet. but a lot of this is verga, not reaching the ground, but it will be. by sunrise there should be more rain headed south. but as we look up here, bodega bay, some sprinkles and light rain. sea ranch getting a little wet. but head down into marin county and maybe a little bit of wet pavement but for the most part you are still dry. offshore you can see some heavier showers here. this is all going to rotate on in. so for the morning hours through the afternoon hours, we are looking at a wet day and even some embedded thunderstorms are offshore. and the lightning. we will have to watch out for that. but this continues to sink south

along the coastal hills into the santa cruz mountains. in fact, cold air behind it will allow for some snow levels to drop to around 4,000 feet as the system sinks into the central coast. so a cool day today. wet weather. here's the timing of it. 8:00 today you can see still just off the shoreline, but the models continue to bring in the moisture throughout the 9:00 hour. we will be getting wet in the north by. you see the colder air. 11:00 the rain sinks down to the south. also in the east by. and then through the 2:00 hour more scattered light showers. moisture headed south throughout the santa cruz mountains and by the evening tonight we are dry with rainfall amounts ranging from a tenth of an in top a half-inch. some of the coastal hills maybe we could get more than that. that is good news. high temperatures today much cooler with low 50s in the city. 58 in oakland. look for mid-50s down on santa cruz. soggy day there. the accuweather seven-day forecast, rain today, sunshine returns tomorrow, sun and cloud

>> welcome back. we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning to you. look what we have. rain is sitting offshore. we are looking at it to develop and bring everyone a little bit of it throughout the day today. here's a look at the north bay where point reyes getting a little light rain. further south it is still sitting offshore. so we are dry in san francisco. of course, across the east bay. look at this. more development to the south. here is the key. this system will skirt the coast and it will run parallel to it. so the heaviest amounts will be along the coastal hills. but we are looking at this to rotate through and allow for everyone to pick up a little pit. the next couple hours the rain increases throughout the bay area. toward sunrise, here we are about 6:00. then by 7:00 should see a good amount of light rain around the

governor have resigned or been fired over the scandal. a firestorm of controversy has erupted around a firehouse in the nation's capitol. steps away from with a 77-year-old man collapsed from an apparent heart attack. despite pleas for help, firefighters refused to lift a finger. abc news reporter susan has the mounting fallout. >> controversy is heating up at this northeast washington firehouse. >> everything i've seen up to now is just horrific. >> cecil, a 77-year-old veteran city employee, collapse cardiac arrest outside this strip haul last weekend. his daughter went screaming to the firehouse for help and to one firefighter who happened to be outside. the parking lot where he collapsed is only about 50 yards from this engine 26. >> i run to the curb and said are you going to help me or are you going to let my it had die? >> others approached the firehouse only to be turn away

here on abc7 at 8:00 this morning. more cutbacks are coming for united airlines. united said they will drop their hub in cleveland, slashing its daily flights and eliminating 470 jobs. in a letter to employees, the company's ceo said the cleveland hub has not been profitable in more than a decade. united will begin phasing out cleveland as a connection starting in april. some changes started to for some at&t customers. the company is reducing cell phone rates for family plans. you knew rates apply to plans with at least 10 gigabytes of data shared by two or more phones on a single account. first amazon, now a beer maker wants to use drones to deliver to customers. the wisconsin-made brewery wants to use drones to deliver twelve-packs to thirsty ice fishermen. the company said gps will track down the buyers.

>> welcome back, everyone. thanks for waking up early to join us here on the abc7 sunday morning news. we he joy the company and for your viewing pleasure a live look at the san mateo bridge. are you aware that punxsutawney phil, the famous groundhog, saw his shadow today? meaning six more weeks of winter. maybe we can squeeze some rain out of it. lisa argen along shortly with a full accuweather forecast. nature lovers in the south by are excited. an ongoing cleanup of los gatos creek in san jose and campbell have brought beavers back to the area and they have the video to prove it. abc7 news reporter david louie has the story. >> steve hall was determined to make a difference. he's the founder of friends of los gatos creek. the creek is filled with de bring, discarded drink cups and plastic containers, for example, all of which makes for a hostile environment for fish and wildlife. and now something has changed. >> you are seeing that the beavers have come through here

getting light showers. but not quite yet toward pet lama. san francisco you are dry but off the coast you notice we are looking at the darker green. this is the rain that will continue to develop throughout the morning hours and slide south. the heaviest showers will be along the coastal hills and south of san francisco. as this area of low pressure skirts the coast and even some thunderstorms offshore and it will beheaded down into southern california. so maybe a few lightning strikes with this offshore, but for us it's just the light to moderate rain. not helping much out with the drought but just a little bit. in fact anywhere from about a tenth to half-inch in the wettest locks. 47 san francisco. oakland. the south winds were much milder this morning. 45 los gatos. 50 at the coast. from emeryville it's dry and looking at upper 30s in the north bay from nap but out towards the delta. 38 in fairfield with livermore coming in at 38, as well.
