i'm marci gonzalez in for diana perez. >> and i'm john muller. we begin with the new details on the shocking death of oscar-winning actor philip seymour hoffman. a friend found the 46-year-old in his bathroom, dead of an apparent drug overdose. >> from broadway to the big screen, hoffman was one of the most ambitious actors of his generation. friends gathered overnight to pay tribute with candles and flowers. tahman bradley is live in lower manhattan with the latest. good morning, tahman. >> reporter: marci and john, good morning to you both. this is the apartment where the oscar-winning actor was found dead by his friends and police. it was an apparent drug overdose. today, the search for answers in the sudden death of actor philip seymour hoffman. the results of a medical exam should be revealed later today. overnight, fans brought flowers. to this manhattan memorial. >> sad. he was a bright light. >> terrible. he was too young. way too young. he's so talented. >> reporter: police say they

found him unresponsive, lying on the bathroom floor of his apartment. a law enforcement official tells abc news a syringe was found in hoffman's arm, and there were envelopes of suspected heroin at the scene. reactions pouring in from around the world. >> we lost one of the greats one of the greats. very, very sad. >> it's a shame. who knows what he would have been able to do? >> reporter: in may of last year, he admitted he spent ten days in rehab recently before drug abuse. he told "60 minutes" in 2006 he had a drug problem in his early 20s. but had kicked the habit for 23 years. >> you get panicked. it was, um -- i was 22. i got panicked for my life. >> reporter: he was an ambitious leading man. of incredible variety and depth. he earned praise for performances in "charlie wilson's war." >> i bugged a scotch bottle. >> reporter: and "capote," which earned him his oscar. he's survived by his long-time girlfriend, theater director and costume designer mimi o'donnell

and their three children. back here live outside hoffman's apartment. as you can see, people have dropped off flowers and candles. all night, trying to pay their respects. hoffman appeared in more than 50 films in a career that spanned less than 25 years. john and marci? >> all right, tahman bradley. live in lower manhattan. thank you. all right. turning to our other top story this morning, the super bowl. >> oh, yeah, that. there are celebrations this morning in seattle. and cleanup in new jersey in the wake of a seahawks 43-8 rout of the broncos that will certainly go down in the record books. 12 seconds in, the seahawks took the lead and never looked back. scoring the quickest points in super bowl history. >> we just played football and the things that were supposed to happen happened. >> reporter: the bronco nation, shocked. >> we needed to play really well in order to win. and we just -- didn't come anywhere close to that. >> reporter: bronco shawn

philips apologizing for the letdown by text. his son's reply. it's okay. daddy. you're still my hero. in seattle, fans will celebrate with a team parade on wednesday. thousands taking to the streets last night. >> it's like all our dreams have come true. there's no better feeling in the world. >> reporter: for the stars, it was a night to shine. ♪ america ♪ ♪ yeah yeah yeah yeah >> reporter: after the game, a rough ride home as more than 30,000 fans poured out of metlife stadium, crunching into a mass transit system. >> new jersey, get it together. you knew what was happening long before. >> reporter: despite two-hour waits for many just to leave, new jersey transit officials are calling it a tremendous success. no long commutes for fans watching at home. and, oh, those commercials this year, bringing out the beef cake, cute kids, and animals.

he argued that the website is now working the way it's supposed to. and a bit of interesting political theater played out during the super bowl. hillary clinton tweeted it's so much more fun to watch fox when it's someone else being blitzed and sacked. it's pretty clearly a reference to fox's aggressive coverage of benghazi among other things clinton-related scandals. let's talk about the northeast, bracing this morning for yet another winter storm. >> at least another half foot of snow is set to blanket the new york city area. the same system slamming much of the midwest, like this in illinois. accuweather's jim dickey has the latest. good morning, jim. >> good morning, john and marci. tracking some snowfall this morning. tough to believe, many spots across the east in the 40s and 50s on sunday. colder air has moved in. and then here comes the snow. a new area of low pressure fo forming up along the front over

the weekend. that snow spreading north and eastern. as we head through the morning hours. we're expecting disruptive snow from west virginia across the mason-dixon line. the pa turnpike will be a mess. some spots 6 to 12 inches here through the day. john and marci, back to you. >> thank you, jim. breaking news in indiana. there is a manhunt under way for an escaped killer. michael david elliott was serving five life terms for murder and armed robbery when he escaped last night from a michigan prison. police say he then car-jacked a woman and drove her to elkhart, indiana, where she managed to free herself. they say elliott is considered armed and dangerous. and there are fresh security concerns this morning over the upcoming winter olympics in sochi. less than a week before the opening ceremonies, russian officials have confirmed that only 6 of the 9 media hotels are fully operational. several tourist hotels are still under construction. it is raising more security worries as an expected 6,000 people, mostly media, pour into sochi today. yesterday not only the super bowl. it was ground hog day.

in to the new jersey legislative committee investigating the closure of the george washington bridge. >> we have subpoenas out to 20 individuals and organizations. and those documents could range potentially from a cup of papers to thousands of papers. >> abc news has learned that christina rinna, a top staffer resigned friday. she was assistant to bridget kelly. christie's former deputy chief of staff and a key figure in the lane closure scandal. former chicago mayor richard daley will be in the hospital for a few more days. the 71-year-old daley had complained of feeling ill and disoriented while on a business trip. one paper suggested a stroke. a spokeswoman says neither his family or doctors have described his condition that way. two massive volcanos erupting over the weekend on opposite sides of the earth. 16 people were killed in indonesia when the volcano started to erupt.

the mountain had been rumbling for months, romting the evacuation of tens of thousands of villagers. the volcano blew saturday, a day after many people were allowed to return. and then the volcano in ecuador. erupting three times. sending huge clouds of smoke high into the air. the third was so big it created a five-mile column of ash above the mountain. no reports of fatalities. officials say it was a release of pressure and they didn't expect it to get much worse. we're getting the first glimpse of man at -- a man at the center of an incredible survival story. ship-wrecked after spending more than a year adrift in a fiberglass boat. jose alberengo washed ashore south of hawaii in the remote marshall islands. he said he got lost back in december of 2012. after setting off for a shark-fishing expedition. and he survived the 8,000-mile ordeal by eating raw fish, birds, and turtles. incredible. a conservation group has

with lots of green on the map so we are at top speed and not seeing the fog forming in this area but in the north by we are starting to see pockets of it so be careful when you head out on the roads and use the low beams and not the high beams. drive time traffic shows 580 from tracy to dublin 25 minutes and westbound from antioch to concord is 14 minutes and 101 from san rafael to san francisco is just 16 minutes. the bay bridge toll plaza shows traffic moving smoothly away from the maze into san francisco. break overnight, oakland firefighters are on the scene of a two alarm house fire in west oakland that spread to the adjacent home this morning. firefighters got reports someone may have been trapped snowed but they were unable to find anyone. the cause of the fire is under investigation. >> a memorial is growing for murdered three-year-old napa girl.

her mother and her mother's boyfriend are in custody and could face charges in a case neighbors called stunning and unthinkable. amy hollyfield is at the el cerrito bart station where the couple was arrested. amy? >> police found them because of an anonymous tip and taken to napa county jail and while police work on the charges they will file against them some in napa gathered for a vigil for the little girl who was killed. three-year-old kayleigh slusher was found in her bed in an apartment in napa on saturday. police say it appear she suffered from blunt force trauma and also sexual assault. when she was discovered in her apartment, police started looking for her mom and the mother's boyfriend. those at the apartment complex say the couple had recently been using drugs. >> she hooked with him and you can see her doing downhill.
