>> and i'm marci gonzalez in for diana perez. we begin with the wave of winter weather sweeping across the country. round one buried the northeast in several inches of snow, stranding thousands of travelers, and this is just the beginning. 160 million people are in the path of two more storms. it is a mess again from the midwest to the northeast. this morning, half of the country is preparing for a week of snow, ice and rain. right now, 25 states are under winter watches or warnings, but some are taking the snow masses in stride like this shopkeeper in stroudsburg, pennsylvania. >> makes boot sales and clothing sales really good. gloves have been good. hats have been good. hand warmers, everything. >> reporter: snow is piling up in connecticut where people are getting creative to stay warm and dry.

>> this works, because it's wet, clingy snow, so no matter what you wear, it's going to get wet. >> reporter: clearing snow is not for everybody, but someone's got to do it, even new york's mayor. >> i have shoveled twice this morning already because it came on so quickly. >> reporter: today over 1,000 flights have already been canceled across the country. the bulk of them at the philadelphia, newark and new york laguardia airports and the super bowl exodus turned into a traveling nightmare for fans trying to get back home. >> right now they're canceling every hour, so i'm not even sure i'll get out. >> with the weather getting so bad, i called this morning and got an earlier flight, and then it got delayed then it got delayed, and now it's delayed again. >> all right, so that was round one of the winter weather. round two is forming right now. >> and for the very latest on that, what's in store, we turn to accuweather meteorologist jim dickey. jim? >> good morning, john and marci. our stormy week continues here with storm -- winter storm two of three. it's already forming up here across the lower mississippi valley going to streak north and eastward headed through wednesday, but the snow, that's beginning already through these

early morning hours across the plains, the front range of the rockies, snow spreading eastward. the heaviest of the snow today will be across eastern kansas into central and northern missouri then on into the ohio valley. kansas city by the time the sun rises wednesday morning, likely 6 to 12 inches of snow then from there the system heads into the northeast, new england, bringing a fresh foot in many locations, northern p.a. on into portions of new england, again, 6 to 12 inches too and another storm that rolls in this weekend hitting many of the same regions and this looks to be the strongest of the bunch, so our stormy week continues. john and marci, back to you. >> all right. thanks, jim. a much different scenario in the west where they're struggling to cope with a historic drought threatening to cut off water to millions of people across california. >> the bay area got soaked with some rain, and that's welcome, but it was just a drop in the bucket. reservoirs have dried up, and farmers now scrambling to water their crops. it could mean billions of dollars in losses and higher

produce prices across the country. >> it'll affect all of us because, again, if the rain doesn't come down, the crops don't grow, people don't work, prices go up and so forth. >> the drought has prompted the governor to declare a state of emergency. in order to get back on track, the state would have to get heavy rain every other day till may. the manhunt for a murderer who escaped from a michigan prison sunday night is over. michael david elliot was recaptured last night in northern indiana. police tracked him down after receiving a report of a stolen car. elliott was on the loose for about 24 hours before being caught. the officers who arrested him said elliott surrendered peacefully. >> he wasn't disrespectful by any means. he was fairly polite actually. >> and said, hey, i'm the guy everyone is looking for? >> he didn't try to give any false names or send us off the path. we asked him his name, and he told us who he was. >> prison officials will now try to determine how elliott escaped when cameras observed him trying to get through two fences. an officer was said to be monitoring those cameras.

he also eluded an officer in a vehicle who at one point was just about 20 feet away. joan mondale, the wife of former vice president walter mondale, is being remembered by president obama. mondale died yesterday in minneapolis surrounded by her husband and sons. her family did not discuss her illness. a statement from the president praised mondale's passionate efforts to promote arts and culture during her years in washington referring to her nickname, joan of art. mondale was 83 years old. new jersey's embattled governor is speaking out for the first time since last week's bombshell claim made by a former aide. david wildstein said evidence exists that chris christie knew about the george washington bridge closures while they were going on. christie responded on a new jersey radio show last night. >> the most important issue is did i know anything about the plan to close these lanes? did i authorize it? did i know about it? did i approve it? did i have any knowledge of it

breaking business news this morning, overseas markets are getting hammered. the nikkei down more than 4% following the dow's biggest one-day drop in eight months. stocks tumbled more than 300 points, down more than 7% since the start of the year. discouraging manufacturing numbers and disappointing car sales sparked off the sell-off. the wall street plunge is taking a toll on your retirement savings. the average american's 401(k) is now down nearly 6% this year and so for a typical nest egg of $100,000, that is, of course, a $6,000 loss in just the last month. some analysts are putting a dollar figure on last month's polar vortex.

they say last month's polar blast across the country probably cost the u.s. $5 billion in lost revenue. that comes from lost productivity and consumer spending, as well as costs to airlines canceling 15,000 flights. another astounding number, this one, recalled vehicles here in the u.s. the government says almost 22 million cars and trucks recalled by automakers last year, the most since 2004. with more companies using common parts, they tend to be larger when something goes wrong. google has to move its controversial mystery barge from a san francisco bay island because the state says permits for construction there shouldn't have been issued. the company has yet to publicly announce its plans for the floating four-story building, but speculation has centered on a technology learning center or a new retail store. facebook, mark zuckerberg's one-time dorm room project, has now turned ten years old today. >> unbelievable. the social networking giant now boasts more than 1.2 billion users, close to a seventh of the planet's total population. zuckerberg will also mark another milestone in may when he

chilling new details at the death scene finding nearly 70 baggies of heroin in his apartment, five of them used hoffman was found alone what a hypodermic needle sticking out of his arm. now investigators keying in on the heroin itself, some stamped with the logo ace of spades to examine its purity. hoffman was supposed to pick up his children on sunday but he never showed up. that prompted calls to friends who came to his apartment building here and discovered his body. hoffman struggled with drugs and alcohol as a young actor saying he remained sober for decades before relapsing. it was just weeks ago that he was at the sundance film festival promoting his latest film, "god's pocket" seen here in one of his last interviews. >> you kind of know that someone is asking you to be involved in something that's truly personal, you know, and those are the projects you want to be a part of. >> reporter: it was his passion for his work and the characters he played that made him an acting legend. ryan smith, abc news, new york. >> hoffman's tragic passing casts light on the growing danger of heroin use here in the

u.s. the dea says heroin overdoses have now increased 45% in recent years. in the past few weeks, concern has risen over heroin mixed with the potent painkiller fentanyl. at least 22 people have died in western pennsylvania after using the drug mix. it dogs not appear hoffman's death was linked to this combination. well, federal investigators are on the scene of a deadly small plane crash in nashville. it's believed that four members of the same family were on board the gulfstream that went down. the plane had missed its first approach and crashed near a ymca while preparing for a second attempt. no one on the ground was hurt. the food and drug administration launching a $115 million nationwide ad campaign targeting young smokers. the ads will graphically focus on concerns about appearance one showing a teenage girl peeling the skin off her face to trade it for a cigarette. in another a young man pulls out a tooth with pliers. the ads will run through at least next year. >> time for sports.
