good morning, america. breaking now, going from bad to worse, another major winter storm set to wallop the entire eastern half of the u.s. in the next 24 hours. more than a foot of snow and dangerous ice from philadelphia to boston. heavy snow across the midwest right now. new details still coming in on the death of philip seymour hoffman. police piecing together his final days. this haunting picture of him at sundance two weeks ago and his stunning admission at the film festival revealed this morning. road to recovery. the 16-year-old girl who just walked across a room for the first time after that shocking skydive accident, plummeting 3500 feet after her parachute didn't fully open. we'll hear from her parents this morning. ♪ freeze frame, freeze frame cracking the code. seattle seahawks star richard

ginger, start us off. >> and that's the thing. everybody is saying to me this morning, wait, another one? yes, another one in the northeast that comes tonight through tomorrow but look at this. more than two dozen states from colorado and texas all the way to maine in some sort of winter weather advisory or warning. remember, warning means imminent. it is happening or it's about to happen. and that's why we've got this active pattern all along the jet stream. we're looking for 6 to 12 inches in the pink area. just north of new york city but i think it will be right on the edge and we'll be talking about ice, too. but look, all the way back through indianapolis and kansas city all in that pink, wow. this is a wallop for so many people. and the ice from arkansas up through southern illinois even ohio. we have so much to talk about. we've got to get to clayton sandell who is there in kansas city for one of the biggest yet this season. >> reporter: hey, good morning, ginger. the flakes starting to come down now. i have my snow shovel. we're about to get walloped.

up to 10 inches of snow here. skrools are closed. the major is telling people to stay home. this could be thee biggest snowstorm here in 20 years. it's the snow that just won't slow. government offices, courts and schools closed throughout connecticut. delaware, maryland, new jersey, ohio, pennsylvania, and west virginia. scattered power outages reported throughout the region. at least two deaths and one serious injury blamed on the storm. the northeast this morning shaking off that slopfest of wet and heavy downfall. >> it's getting ugly. >> reporter: in yonkers, new york, this suv slid 150 feet into the snowy woods, injuring the driver and taking two tow trucks to pull the vehicle out. >> one just doesn't do it. >> reporter: close by, a commuter bus slammed into the front of this deli. miraculously, nobody was injured.

on long island, that same snow immobilizing this mail truck. the midwest already feeling the force of the next winter wallop. brad sauter from our oklahoma city affiliate koco doing all he can to get this pickup truck moving. >> i got no traction right here, y'all. >> reporter: soon, it was trucks pushing trucks. in northwest arkansas, vehicles flung into ditches and rammed into trees. now, kansas city watched what happened in the snow and ice catastrophe last week in atlanta. officials say that will not happen here. they're bringing in almost 250 snowplows working round the clock, hopefully, they'll keep this city running. ginger? >> thank you so much, clayton. it's nice and cold there. so they'll be all in the snow event but the ice is going to move all the way into pittsburgh, even philadelphia, new york city, that's going to come after some snow. it's going to be a really messy mix. again, the timing is what we want to focus in on. today it's happening in the plains. it moves here by 2:00 a.m. i stop it. going to new york city, gets going in the overnight hours into early tomorrow you'll see

us and finally out of our hair by 2:00 p.m. tomorrow. but boston going to get a lot of this. there's no one that misses out, robin. >> no, unfortunately not. all right, ginger, thank you. now to wall street. it's cold there, as well. stocks sank on monday. the worst day in more than seven months, the dow plummeted more than 300 points or 2%. abc's rebecca jarvis is here with the latest on what's behind the plunge and what it means for your wallet. and hopefully, a little better new this is morning? >> yes, the good news is, stocks opened hire. it's been a volatile morning so far. stocks playing with the thereat line all morning long on some better than expected housing news. last year was the best housing market since 2005 before the bubble burst. stocks have struggled so far this year. that's because of iraq than expected news on jobs. manufacturing also looking iraq. and investors are afraid that this cold weather that we've

been experiencing. it drove so many businesses to a halt. so many school closures. could that have a spill-over effect. >> they're not going to the stores but also people are concerned about the retirement funds. >> of course, this is having an impact there, too, robin. we started out the year, the typical american family's 401(k) down 5.8% this year. started out around $100,000 at the beginning of the year. now, it has lost $6,000 in light of this. but you have to look at the big picture. last year was strong, this year is starting out weak. it averages out. you're actually up. >> i know, just be patient. be patient. >> yes. >> all right, rebecca, thank you. >> thank you, guys. to the olympics with opening ceremonies three days away, the head of the olympic committee is confident the games will be safe. but russian officials still scrambling to finish all the facilities in sochi. abc's matt gutman is there with the latest. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, george, from high up in the caucasus mountains, one of the several resorts you see up here at the olympics. you see buildings. you see construction workers.

but behind me, you don't see many tourists. we could call this breakneck construction here, the other preolympic event. you could call it the preolympic sprint event. last-minute construction. this morning thousands of workers across this olympic area are frantically finishing roads. placing cobblestones, slapping the finishing touches on these ghost towns. most of the 25,000 olympic rooms are ready, getting to them is a different matter. these road workers told us they're building a road to get to olympic hotels. with orders to finish at breakneck speed. they started building this about half an hour ago and they've already got this part done. he thinks they'll have about three-quarters of a mile done within two hours. president vladimir putin's so-called ring of steel is sealed tight. troops here line the roads. and are even posted unseen above the alpine resorts. in fact, sochi's security is so thick it's estimated there are

24 cops or troops for every athlete. it's one reason some of the athletes seem unconcerned. >> honestly i think we wouldn't be over here if there was that big of an issue. you know, we feel safe. >> reporter: shaun white says that wrist is probably not going to affect him. he is going to race. and additional incentive for all the folks working behind me here. president putin is coming to town. and that means they've got to finish up. george? >> that is for sure. >> yeah, but you can see the athletes getting very excited. as we get very close. now to the new clues and evidence emerging about philip seymour hoffman's death and what he said in his final days. police say he died in a house full of heroin. dozens of packets of the drug found in his apartment. his family and friends now being questioned. and abc's ryan smith is here with the latest on all this. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, robin. you know, the details of philip seymour hoffman's recent life paint a picture of a man in conflict. but new information revealed this morning may place

investigators one step closer to finding out what really happened in the hours before his death. this morning, police trying to piece together philip seymour hoffman's final days. >> don't make me out to be the evil brother as putting away our father against your will. >> reporter: abc news has learned there were roughly 70 baggies of heroin in his apartment when he was found dead. five of them used. police discovered used syringes and numerous prescription drugs including anxiety medication and muscle relaxers. right now, police are looking for the person who sold him those massive quantities of drugs, scouring his cell phone for clues. "the wall street journal" reports that hoffman's estranged girlfriend saw him and spoke to him the day before he died and that he appeared high. hoffman's death striking a chord around the country. even the white house weighing in. >> it's hard to imagine if you are a fan of incredibly powerful acting that you weren't a fan of philip seymour hoffman who was just a remarkable talent. >> reporter: former co-star and

friend cate blanchett visited his grieving family monday. meanwhile, tabloids report he was in the throes of a raging heroin addiction. magazine publisher john arundel met hoffman at the sundance film festival just weeks ago. >> after i asked him who he was and what he did, he said i'm a heroin addict. and i looked at him and took off his hat and said, oh, you're philip seymour hoffman. >> reporter: seen here in one of the last photos taken of him in tin type at the film festival. and this one taken in an atlanta area bar last week, authorities continue to investigate the case hoping to learn more about the death of an acting legend. and broadway finding a way to honor hoffman three-time tony award nominee. on wednesday night at 7:45 eastern time, the lights on the broadway marquees will be dimmed in his honor. meanwhile, an autopsy report could come out as early as today. robin. >> thanks so much. i remember seeing him in "death of a salesman." on broadway.

>> so powerful. >> and true west, too. he lit up that stage. >> have some other news for us. >> we do. and we're going to begin with the manhunt for that convicted killer who escaped from a michigan prison by sneaking through two fences. he has finally been captured after a violent 24 hours on the run. alex perez tells us how he was caught and how he pulled off the escape in the first place. >> reporter: this morning, convicted killer michael david elliot is back behind bars captured by deputies in la porte, indiana, pulling him over because the car he was driving matched the description of the stolen vehicle. >> the speeds that he had, i knew he wasn't going to make the turn. so he ended up going into a snowbank. >> reporter: elliot escaped from the prison in ionia, michigan, sunday night. investigators say a vehicle with an armed officer came as close as 20 feet to the prisoner but didn't notice him. >> it appears he took a uniform from a prisoner who was working in the kitchen and so that white uniform that he was wearing

allowed him to blend in with snow on the ground. >> reporter: he was convicted of killing four people in 1993 and was serving a life sentence. police say after his escape he carjacked and abducted the woman driving this jeep and drove to indiana, stopping for gas where he was captured on surveillance cameras. she asked to use a bathroom and calmly made this call to 911 from behind the locked door. >> i'm being held -- i'm hostage to an escaped convict from the ionia correctional facility. >> reporter: elliot took off, leaving the woman in the bathroom. with elliot now back in custody investigators working to figure out what can be done to stop this from happening again. for "good morning america," alex perez, abc news, chicago. >> alex, thank you. a small plane crashed in nashville killing the four people on board. all believed to be from the same family. the pilot, though, did make a last-second maneuver to avoid crashing into a crowded ymca building that was just 20 feet away from the crash site.

and federal regulators are pushing a new plan to reduce crashes on the road. by the end of the year 2016, they want to require new cars to talk to one another, using wireless technology that warns drivers before a collision. experts say it could prevent as much as 80% of accidents. a new warning about sugar. we already knew it was bad for us but a study out this morning finds that even a small amount of extra sugar per day, for example, a can of sweetened soda with lunch, can increase your risk of developing a fatal heart problem. researchers found that people who got 25% or more of their daily calorie intake from sugar were three times more likely to die of heart problems than those who stayed below the recommended level. finally, with so many snowstorms hitting this winter millions of parents, us, all too familiar with that standard often monotone school closing message over the phone. so a principal in kentucky

>> reporter: if you thought he was down for the count -- >> i've been very clear about this. before these lanes were closed, i knew nothing about it. >> reporter: -- chris christie came back swinging. >> i didn't plan it. i didn't authorize it. i didn't approve it. i knew nothing about it. >> reporter: his first interview since a former transportation official and former ally david wildstein alleged christie lied and evidence exists christie knew about the september four-day george washington bridge lane closures while it was going on. and this was christie's response. >> did i have any knowledge of it beforehand? and the answer is still the same. it's unequivocally no. >> reporter: but admitted he's still in the dark about some parts. >> i still don't know whether there was a traffic study that morphed into -- >> you still don't know at this point whether there was a traffic study? >> what i'm saying, eric, did it start as a traffic study that morphed into political shenanigans? or did it start as political shenanigans that became a

traffic study? >> reporter: cornered with the news breaking overnight his former deputy chief of staff bridget kelly is taking the fifth, refusing to turn over subpoenaed documents. >> when she didn't tell me the truth, and i fired her. i would hope they would share any information they had that would let me get to the bottom of it. but on the other hand, they have constitutional rights like everybody else. >> reporter: just what toll has this had on his family? >> my wife and my kids, they know me and they know there's nothing to be worried about. because i told them the same thing that i just told all the people who are listening tonight, is that i had nothing to do with this. >> and now new jersey lawmakers and the u.s. justice department are investigating. both have subpoenaed christie's office for documents which christie says they'll provide. send it back to you, guys. >> it's coming. >> and christie's home state was in the spotlight on sunday, lara. >> indeed, really interesting story, robin, super bowl was the most watched event in tv

history with over 110 million viewers playing witness as the seahawks crushed the broncos. well now, some of the winning players are revealing how they did it. they say they cracked manning's secret code. >> inside -- >> reporter: it was a super bowl smackdown. >> touchdown, seattle! >> reporter: that surprised the nation. >> dominant performance. >> reporter: broncos quarterback peyton manning noticeably upset as the seahawks dominated play after play, even snapping at a reporter after the game. >> it's not embarrassing at all. the word embarrassing is an insulting word to tell you the truth. >> reporter: so how did seattle pull off its near shutout of denver in sunday's game? >> going on all cylinders. it looked pretty good. >> reporter: cornerback richard sherman revealing his team cracked the manning code allowing them to anticipate his plays. >> touchdown, seattle! >> the fact that these guys were able to pick out some routes of the opposing players was a tremendous feat. >> reporter: in an interview just after the game with the website the monday morning quarterback, sherman reportedly told the writer that he and two

other teammates figured out some of manning's supposed to be indecipherable hand gestures in the first half, saying quote, we're not just three all-pro players. we're three all-pro minds. adding, if peyton had thrown in some double moves, if he had gone out of character, we could have been exposed. manning is usually notorious for baffling opponents with codes like his now-famous omaha. >> omaha, omaha, omaha. >> reporter: but this morning neither the seahawks nor the broncos are commenting on sherman's claims. some say, though, the footage speaks for itself. you know, wondering if maybe he should have stuck with the old playbook? in the afc title game, he called omaha 31 times. in this game only called it twice. maybe he overadjusted. who knows? >> seahawks defense was really, really good. that's about as good a defensive performance as you will ever see in a super bowl. period. >> could they have cracked the code?

abc's steve osunsami has the story. >> reporter: this morning his attorneys seat a jury for his murder trial, 47-year-old software developer michael dunn is pleading not guilty, saying what happened outside this florida gas station is a clear case of self-defense. >> 911. >> may i please have the ambulance? somebody's been shot. >> reporter: they say it started over loud music coming interest this red suv. dunn and his girlfriend had left his son's wedding in november 2012 and was in the car outside asking four black teenagers in the durango to turn it down. >> i said, hey, would you guys mind turning that down. and they shut it off. >> reporter: in this interrogation video he explained that they then turned it back up. when he complained they started yelling from inside the vehicle. that's when dunn says he saw something point at him from the suv. >> either a barrel or a stick but, sir, there -- they're like we're going to kill you. >> reporter: dunn says he

grabbed a 9 millimeter from his glove box, fired four shots, and then walked outside his car and fired more bullets as the suv backed away. high school senior jordan davis, just 17 and in the backseat, was killed. his three teenage friends survived. >> i'm at a loss to justify what i did. on that second volley. other than saying i thought they were going to be shooting back. >> reporter: police found no weapons in the suv. davis' mother heartbroken. >> like vigilantism. it's not just about jordan. a lot of other people have died behind these laws. >> reporter: the lead prosecutor is the same state attorney who failed to convict george zimmerman who also argued self-defense in the shooting death of another black 17-year-old, trayvon martin. steve osunsami, abc news. >> let's talk about it with dan

abrams. we just saw the picture of trayvon martin there. a young black man is dead right now. stand your ground is being talked about. are the cases really similar? >> look, apart from the fact that they were both unarmed, they're not that similar. and the key difference is that in the george zimmerman case, in my view, the most important piece of evidence was the fact that he had injuries on the back of his head. why was that so important? because that forced the prosecutors to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he didn't actually fear great bodily injury. didn't reasonably believe he could have great bodily injury or death inflicted upon him. here there is no evidence of injury. there is no gun. it's that combination that is going to make this a much, much harder defense than george zimmerman. >> so does that mean that michael dunn cannot succeed understand your ground? >> no, and, look, the key is really going to be self-defense. he did not seek a stand your ground hearing. remember, one of the most controversial parts of it is it lets you try and avoid a trial. it allows you to go to a judge and say, i shouldn't be tried at

all. there wasn't a stand your ground hearing here so it's stand your ground/self-defense, the most important question will be was he reasonable in his belief that he was trying to prevent death or great bodily injury. >> he says he saw something but there wasn't a gun there. >> the authorities would say there's inconsistent statements in what he said so this -- i think that this is a much harder defense than was the case of george zimmerman. >> dan abrams, thanks very much. >> such a tragic loss of life. now to the latest on that 16-year-old who fell 3500 feet through the air when her parachute did not open properly. she's now making major strides in her recovery and her parents are speaking out. a smile lit up 16-year-old makenzie wethington's face as she took the first steps since her january 25th parachuting accident. many thought she would never walk again. but the resilient teen did just that on monday. makenzie fell 3500 feet after her parachute didn't fully deploy on a solo jump in

oklahoma. the skydiving trip was a sweet 16 birthday present from her father. the fall left her with broken vertebrae, fractured hips, and bleeding in her brain. >> the doctor said they didn't expect her to even come out of that at all. you know, and now she's walking all the way across the room. >> reporter: she'll undergo through hours of rehab a day. she remembers jumping out of the plane but nothing of the fall. >> my concern is that she's still live today and there's a reason for it. and my daughter is still here and i get to see her every day. as far as the parachute opening or not this is my last concern. i don't care if she ever remembers. >> doctors say her prognosis is good. her biggest challenges will be the pain and patience.

the respect of the process, i'm going to let, you know, the legal matters play out in court. >> reporter: the documents also allege that joe failed to submit tax returns for 2004 through 2008. in total, according to federal authorities, the guidices allegedly obtained more than $5 million in bank loans due to fraudulent and falsified paperwork. >> i can't just be upset and crawl up in a ball and just go in a room and lock the door. i can't. i'm a mom. i have four daughters. >> reporter: but when the door is shut and they are in bed, do you get to do that? >> yes, and i do do that. i mean, i would be lying to say that's not happening. >> reporter: the guidices have pleaded not guilty and at the request of their lawyers have asked for separate trials. if granted, documents say joe will testify to teresa's noninvolvement in the alleged criminal activity. what have you specifically told your kids about what mommy and daddy are going through? >> my three little ones, they really don't know what's going

on. my oldest does know something is going on but, you know, we say mommy and daddy have a legal team that's handling it. >> reporter: if convicted each is facing up to 30 years in prison and joe who was born in italy and is not a u.s. citizen could be deported. you say you got to be strong for the wife and kids. how do you do that with so much uncertainty? >> you have to. you know, you really have to. you have to be strong-minded number one. if you're weak, you're not going to make it. >> reporter: the couple is juggling a hectic schedule filming season 6 of "housewives" with three new cast members joining the show. she's also keeping busy with her business endeavors including five cookbooks and her fabulicious line special identifying in everything from italian food to hair products. what do you think when you see all that teresa's done? >> i'm proud of her. >> reporter: through all the fame comes the scrutiny, the couple dogged by persistent tabloid rumors of joe's infidelity, which he denies. somebody takes a picture and then there's a story. >> i'm a cheater. >> no rumor is ever going to come between us and, you know, if anything, through all this, it's made us stronger, and we're
