making news in america this morning, let the games begin. the olympics opening ceremony is hours away, and the competition is already intense but so is the concern for terrorism. a full report from russia. winter blast. freezing cold, a race to restore power and one man who was walking in the wrong place at the wrong time. seeing dispute. a disagreement at a crash site ends with a firefighter in handcuffs and a lot of unanswered questions. and heavenly chocolate, a new statue of the pope that is really sweet. good friday morning. i'm marci gonzalez. >> and i'm alex perez. john and diana are off.

we start with the final countdown to the olympics and those lingering concerns about security. >> give you a live look now at sochi. today's opening ceremony takes place in the stadium there on the left. it starts at about 11:00 a.m. eastern time. >> thousands of americans are in sochi, and more will be arriving in the coming days following the warning about terrorists smuggling explosives onto planes in toothpaste tubes. homeland security is now banning liquids in carry-on luggage and direct flights from the u.s. to russia. now, these are the most expensive olympics staged, an estimated $51 billion, and as abc's hamish mcdonald tells us, there's a lot at stake. >> reporter: and for vladimir putin, the president of russia, he has staked everything on being able to carry out these games successfully, but with just a few hours to go before the big event, as it were, the opening ceremony, a lot of last-minute work being done, a lot of those final bits of preparation at the venues and some of the accommodation sites is taking place, but absolutely

the number one priority for russia and for the organizers is security. >> abc's hamish mcdonald in russia, thank you. and we've been hearing about problems with facilities in sochi including hotels. >> yeah, here's the latest, the russian official responsible for olympic preparations said yesterday that surveillance cameras have been installed in some of the hotel shower nozzles. the same official also accused western media of anti-russian bias. now, later a spokesman said that official had simply misspoken about the showers. meanwhile, the u.s. is pointing a finger at russia after an american diplomat's private phone call is posted online. >> the state department's top diplomat for europe has apologized after being caught insulting our european allies. in it assistant secretary of state victoria nuland is heard using an expletive directed at the european union. >> so that would be great i think to help glue this thing and have the u.n. help glue it and, you know, [ bleep ] the eu.

>> nuland was apparently complaining that the european union hasn't done enough to get ukraine to break an agreement with russia. word of her comments got out by way of a tweet from a russian official. the other major story we're following is winter weather and its aftermath. hundreds of thousands are still without power in the philadelphia area. and the pacific northwest is bracing for another powerful storm, which could dump a foot of new snow. abc's lana zak has a look at the extreme weather. >> reporter: it looks like a winter nightmare. a pedestrian smacked down by a wall of snow from this snowplow, captured by a surveillance camera in new york. across the east coast, tender steps as black ice threatens pedestrians and drivers alike. in the pacific northwest, the wrath of winter is delivering another blow. oregon and washington state pounded with as much as 10 inches of snow. the roads there, hazardous. 27 cars and trucks in this fatal pileup in albany, oregon.

in pennsylvania, the president has declared a state of emergency. hundreds of thousands are still without power, without heat after wednesday's storm. >> it was really, really tough. my husband was brilliant. he grabbed a mattress and brought it down to the front of the fireplace with one kid on either couch. >> reporter: michelle gibbs called ten different hotels before finding a room for her family. others who are less fortunate have been seeking shelter in shopping malls, public libraries and megashelters established by the red cross as all struggle to stay warm and safe in this bone-chilling cold. >> this is a humbling experience, you know, having to come to a shelter but they've been wonderful. >> reporter: you know, one effect of these storms, the power grid is being pushed to the limit in so many cities. here in new york, residents and businesses are actually being asked in times square to dim those famous lights to try and preserve power. >> wow. all right, lana zak, thanks so much for joining us this morning.

>> thanks. well, a minnesota elementary school was forced to evacuate after dozens of students fell ill. >> and a carbon monoxide leak may be to blame. two students passed out while rehearsing for a play in the auditorium of their springfield school, and others started throwing up. now, by the time this was all over, nearly 30 fourth and fifth graders had to be treated at the hospital. a desperate search is on for a missing newborn in southern wisconsin. 5-day-old kayden powell was apparently taken in the middle of the night. >> the baby boy's mother told police he was not in his bassinet when she went to check on him at about 4:30 in the morning yesterday. detectives say there was no forced entry. the fbi is questioning a relative who had been staying in the home. and new this morning, police in virginia may have found the body of a missing police captain. 45-year-old kevin quick vanished a week ago. a body was discovered in a remote area, but police are still working on a positive identification. quick's suv was used in a robbery on sunday.

three siblings, a brother and two sisters, have been arrested in connection with that. family and friends gather here in new york today to say good-bye to philip seymour hoffman. co-stars and fans paid their respects at a wake last night. a more public memorial will be held in the future. hoffman's death from an apparent overdose has helped focus national attention on the heroin epidemic. and new questions about the safety of west virginia's water. for the second straight day, students in one county were sent home because the school water had an odor similar to the chemical spill in january. the scent is persisting weeks after officials said the nine affected counties were cleared to drink or otherwise use their tap water. a special team will now conduct random safety tests of school water. well, new video just in of a dangerous derailment in colorado. >> take a look here. you can see an axle from one of the train's cars hurtling toward a gas station nearly hitting drivers and the pumps. the 2,000-pound axle became

embedded in a concrete pillar at the gas station. one driver said she barely missed the rolling axle as it flew by. >> wow. all right. time now for the weather from across the nation. it'll be mainly dry in the eastern half of the nation. scattered showers across the southeast coast of texas and the southeast atlantic coast from the carolinas to florida. >> the midwest shivers in another day of arctic air. chicago and detroit are in for the midteens, highs in the 50s across much of the southeast. miami sounds nice in the mid-80s. well, be careful what you say to siri. it turns out everything whispered is being stored. and cuffed by the cops. why a firefighter who was helping victims at an accident scene was put into the backseat of a police car. and a final farewell. jay leno signs off from "the tonight show" with an emotional good-bye.

welcome back. investors will be paying close attention today to the government's new jobs report. it's believed the nation's unemployment rate will tick down slightly to 6.6%. that comes just after the dow's best day of the year so far. foreign markets traded higher overnight. something that could weigh on consumers in the coming weeks, rising gas prices. aaa says prices at the pump will be going up as refineries start to shut down for winter maintenance. it predicts the nationwide average will peak between $3.55 and $3.75 per gallon. and google is marking the start of the olympics on its home page today. it features winter sports, rainbow colors and quotes from

the olympic charter. part of it reads "every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport without discrimination of any kind." box office analysts say "the lego movie" is set to dominate this weekend. amazingly, it was made using nearly 4 million unique lego bricks. >> yes, and hollywood a-listers lent their voices to the characters including will ferrell, morgan freeman. audience surveys indicate it will finish far ahead of the weekend's other high-profile debut, "the monuments men" starring george clooney. that's one i want to check out. >> you and a lot of other people. so what happens to your voice when you interact with siri? well, apple says your words are transcribed and then, get this, sent to a facility in north carolina. >> the company claims voices are collected to sharpen siri's voice recognition and improve the quality of other products and services, but critics say that collection is a violation of privacy.

well, it's a good day for air travel with delays expected only in san francisco. and we stay in california for a crazy story that took place on a freeway. several fire engines were on the scene of a crash tuesday night. officers from the california highway patrol ordered them to move out of the fast lane. >> but the driver of one rig refused the cop's orders and continued assisting victims. he was put in handcuffs and detained for over half an hour. the fire chief says the engine was exactly where it should be to protect the victims and first responders. >> so to be, you know, put in -- and detained like this for doing that is unfortunate, and, you know, we have to get a system where that doesn't happen again. >> an investigation is under way to determine who, if anyone, was at fault, and the victims were treated and taken to a hospital by ambulance. all right, we're getting a look this morning at just what happened to justin bieber after his dui arrest in miami beach.

police station surveillance cameras captured the 19-year-old pop star in a holding area two weeks ago. you can see him getting patted down after removing his shoes and his hoodie. bieber has pleaded not guilty to drunk driving and resisting arrest. he's also facing felony vandalism charges in california. opening statements got under way in a florida murder case drawing comparisons to the trayvon martin shooting. a 47-year-old white man shot and killed an unarmed black teenager sitting in a car outside a jacksonville convenience store after an argument over loud music. michael dunn said he was acting in self-defense because 17-year-old jordan davis had threatened him with a weapon, but police found no weapon. a tennessee man and his wife have been charged with the murder of his 5-year-old daughter, accused of making the little girl drink too much soda. alexa lynn boom was allegedly forced to drink more than two liters of grape soda and water as a punishment making her turn blue. the autopsy shows the massive

intake of fluid caused her brain to swell and rupture. the fda has announced rules to make sure that infant formula is safe and nutritious. companies will have to test formula to make sure it doesn't contain salmonella or things that could make a baby sick. the rules also require companies to prove that they are including specific nutrients, proteins, carbohydrates, fats and minerals in their products. a new example of honesty being the best policy. it comes from michigan where the owner of a junk removal business was cleaning out a home. as he was working, he came across something that looked out of place. it was about $100,000 in u.s. savings bonds. >> it was right here in a tin box. i picked it up, opened it, and i was ready to -- i looked at it, and i was like, i got to give him a call. >> after he returned the bonds, the owner let him buy the house where he found them at a super low price. one good deed leading to

another. >> very nice. all right, now, this is something i am always guilty of. hitting the snooze button is just automatic for so many of us, but sleep experts say you may feel less alert and productive later in the day as a result. >> they say it's because when you go back to sleep, you start a new sleep cycle, which you won't have time to finish. that means waking up groggy and fuzzy-headed. what's worse is that coffee does nothing to help. >> i don't know. i need the mental preparation, okay. you have to wake up in seven minutes. start getting into that mind-set of waking up. >> they should give you an option, snooze like a half hour or something. >> there you go. as we said earlier, the opening ceremony at the winter olympics is just hours away, but there's already been some competition in figure skating. yesterday american jeremy abbott did his part in the new team event. the team of marisa castelli and simon shnapir were also on the ice yesterday. >> in women's moguls, hannah kearney leads that event going into tomorrow's final rounds.

but 101 at millbrae, that is it. you can see slowing. this is the bay bridge toll plaza with traffic moving away nicely into san francisco. no delays there. traffic is moving smooth over the altamont pass at highway four. and 101 at san rafael into san francisco. >> the bay area is getting sprinkles head of a major soaker. the storm system is needed to ease the drought. it promises more dangers for drivers. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard is on the peninsula. >> kristen, good morning. we are in san mateo. we are talking about calm before the storm. light drizzle has been falling all morning. san mateo has set up the sandbag stations for residents if they are needed. rain is needed.

residents in the santa cruz mountains could not be happier. the river is flowing but the amount of water is historic lows. this is where residents get the water. it is crucial to replenish the wells. the russian river is in bad state. it should be rages. the fish polllation need more to survive. crops and cattle depend on it. from north to south, everyone in the bay area agrees: rain could not come at a better time. >> hopeful for the pineapple express. coming tomorrow. >> will it raise the river? >> a bit. but we need another 20" to make up. >> the storm will not be enough to pull us out of the trout but every bit of rain is need
