else as we reveal some of the secrets of the opening ceremonies. who will light the cauldron? now just hours away. ♪ >> good morning, america from russia. ♪ ♪ came crashing in good morning, america. the games are up and running even before the opening ceremonies and what a night of firsts. so many new events we haven't seen before. let's everybody take a look at slopestyle. this has never been at the olympics before. you see these -- look at those guys fly. up to 25 miles an hour. >> so beautiful. and team figure skating, yes, i said team figure skating kicked off for the first time both men and women's teams you see all competing together for a group gold medal. russia in the lead right now. >> all right, the home folks have something to cheer right now. also, of course, it is the biggest winter games ever.

almost 3,000 athletes competing from almost 90 countries. >> that's awesome and 90 -- is it 98 events? amazing, 98 events, cannot wait for women's figure skating to start. robin, i don't know about you. >> i'm right with you there. i'm right with you. let's get right to our "gma" olympic headquarters in sochi. abc's amy robach is there at our olympics desk tracking all of the action. good morning, amy. >> that's right, good morning, and before i get to all of the action i've been practicing all morning long because i want to say something. [ speaking russian ] >> good morning, america. in russian, the only thing i can say so far. >> very good. >> i just wanted to say that. and wish you all a good morning and let's get straight to the action because we do have some preliminary competitions to talk about including those two brand-new events you all just talked about, figure skating team event and snowboard slopestyle. overnight in sochi, a dazzling

array of olympic triumphs. >> wow. >> and cringe-worthy crashes. team usa's jeremy abbott falling hard on the ice, then there's the new slopestyle course called intimidating by snowboarding legend shaun white who was injured this week but even with modifications plenty of wipeouts. including this one from canada's mark mcmorris, the hands-down favorite to win gold. american chas guldemond putting together an impressive qualifying run but not good enough. he and his teammates will have to compete again tomorrow in hopes of earning a seat in the finals. but that wasn't the case for the u.s. women. jamie anderson going big, 93.50. her score putting her in second place. she and karly shorr both moving into the finals. the olympics other new event, team figure skating. with their 16-inch height difference americans marisa castelli and simon shnapir attacked the ice but it was no

match for russia's pair posting an 83.79 just short of the highest ever recorded in this event. >> huge twist. >> finally women's freestyle skiing, 21-year-old american heidi kloser out of the competition after injuring her knee during practice. later, teammate hannah kearney pulling out a huge backflip earning the top score for the day, she and teammate eliza outtrim advance to the finals. now with the opening ceremonies just hours away, the athletes we spoke to couldn't be more pumped. >> we're here. we're ready to go. and good things are going to happen in sochi this year. >> reporter: some great things are going to happen in sochi tonight. 40,000 people expected to attend the opening ceremony, which will take place right over my shoulder in fisht stadium and we just learned some of the incredible events in store for this morning's opening ceremony. all, of course, kept secret until now. while we won't see the queen of england jumping out of a helicopter as we saw in 2012 we

will see a troupe of elite russian ballet stars and an amazing 22 tons of fireworks that will bring the games to a spectacular and i think pretty loud start and an interesting addition to the program, the russian duo tattoo known for their racy pop music will also be performing, although classical music, they say, will rule the event. the theme officially russian history past and present and the style is called avant-garde. so it should be something to see. and for the american team, the honor of leading our 230-member delegation, the largest for any country ever, goes to 37-year-old todd ludwick, he is a nordic combined skier and six-time olympian from steamboat springs, colorado. team usa will compete for 94 of those 98 medals up for grabs. the medals will start be awarded tomorrow. take a look at how gorgeous they are. glass inlays of engravings of traditional russian designs from regions around the country, five, in fact, will be awarded tomorrow, guys. a lot to see as the olympics

officially get under way here in sochi. >> not wasting any time. >> she packed a lot of information there. >> thanks, amy. let's get more on the security situation. brian ross tracking the latest. we heard from amy, 40,000 expected to come tonight, more than 40 world leaders. everyone is on the high state of alert. >> absolutely, george. >> russian officials say they are unfazed about security and terror threats and concerns. confident that their ring of steel as president putin calls it will protect the games. it's a ring of steel that involves tens of thousands of armed security personnel along with naval ships out in the black sea. there are surveillance blimps overhead to pick up any possible chatter between terrorists and as well, deep in the mountains of sochi overlooking the olympic sites there are anti-missile batteries all there, george, to protect the olympics. >> president obama not going. a lot of other world leaders not going. the ones that are, something of a rogues gallery. >> of despots and dictators

who are scheduled to be there tonight. including the president of kyrgyzstan. that country's known according to the state department for mistreatment, torture and extortion and bride kidnapping then the president of tajikistan a country known for torture and violence against women and children. and to cap it off, and kazakhstan known for arbitrary unlawful killings so and sex and labor trafficking, including children, george. those will be the honored guests with president putin. >> that's something. thanks very much. now to the latest on the coast-to-coast weather mess. a snowstorm snarling up parts of the west and so many here in the east without power after the ice storm. you know ginger is tracking it all for us. good morning, ginger. >> portland, oregon had 3 1/2 inches of snow. that's their biggest february snow in 20 years. so this is a big deal out west. they have winter storm warnings and advisories all over. more snow especially for the mountains up to four feet possible but, of course, we've got to talk about the east and that south that is so cold this morning, all the way to maryland

and pennsylvania where we're still without electricity and heat. from colossal pileups -- >> this is insane. this is probably 50 cars. >> reporter: -- to icy river rescues. winter weather walloping coast to coast. in pennsylvania, a state of emergency, hundreds of thousands without power and heat. >> extremely cold inside. >> reporter: some of the damage believed to be worse than with hurricane sandy. >> the workers weren't dealing with ice and snow. >> reporter: this woman in lancaster trapped inside her home for nine hours. >> i was getting colder and colder by the minute. >> reporter: in kentucky ice chunks sent this restaurant on the ohio river loose from its holding cable. it was a wild ride for the restaurant workers before they were rescued by a tugboat. while the east coast is dealing with all that fresh white stuff one person died in this 27-car pileup in oregon while in southern washington amateur cameras captured this nightmare on i-5.

>> look at this situation. >> oh, my god. smashed under. that guy is smashed under it. >> that exact situation could happen again today, even portland, oregon will get another couple inches. look at all the snow that happens throughout the next 48 hours. some places three or even four feet of snow. the great news out of it, some lower elevations will get a lot of rain. we're talking 3 to 5 inches of rain that will be so helpful for northern california this weekend. >> great. >> let it rain. >> thank you, ginger. to the farewell for philip seymour hoffman. family and friends gathered to say good-bye at the wake in manhattan last night. the private funeral is later today as we are learning more about the actor's battle with drug addiction. abc's alex perez has the story. >> reporter: one by one philip seymour hoffman's grieving friends and family arrived at his wake last night to say good-bye. among them his three children heads bowed to avoid the cameras followed by his longtime girlfriend mimi o'donnell and a few famous faces in the crowd, amy adams, justin therrot,

cate blanchett and joaquin phoenix paying their respects. in the days since the 46-year-old actor was found dead in his manhattan apartment from an apparent heroin overdose, fans showing an outpouring of support. "the west wing" creator aaron sorkin penned his obituary in "time" magazine noting their similar struggle, "we were both fathers of young children, and we were both recovering drug addicts." remembering an eerie conversation from the past where hoffman said, if one of us -- he said, "if one of us dies of an overdose, possibly ten people who were about to won't." he meant that our deaths would make news and maybe scare someone clean. >> philip seymour hoffman in "capote". >> reporter: the celebrated actor was candid about his battle with addiction on cbs "60 minutes" in 2006. >> so this was drugs or alcohol or both? >> ah, yes. it was all. all that stuff, yeah. anything i could get my hands on, yeah.

yeah, i liked it all. >> reporter: that addiction reportedly resurfaced last may after more than two decades of sobriety. amid the grief, an ongoing investigation to find hoffman's drug dealers, two people arrested in possible connection to the case faced unrelated drug charges in court thursday and were released. a third, 57-year-old musician robert vineberg was also arrested and had hoffman's number in his cell phone. all deny involvement. and besides that, private funeral here in new york there are plans to hold a larger memorial for hoffman later this month. robin, george, still so many trying to make sense of all this. >> okay, alex, thanks very much. top stories from josh. new spying allegations between the u.s. and russia. u.s. officials claim the russians recorded and then leaked an embarrassing phone call between diplomats. during the conversation, the top american diplomat in europe insulted the european union. assistant secretary of state victoria nuland made the remark to the u.s. ambassador to ukraine while discussing the chaos in that country.

>> so that would be great, i think, to help glue this thing and have the u.n. help glue it and, you know, [ bleep ] the eu. >> nuland has since apologized. u.s. officials called the leak and i quote, a new low in russian trade craft, end quote. a big setback in the push for immigration reform. house speaker john boehner now says it is unlikely any bill will pass this year. he blames president obama saying republicans cannot trust the president to enforce the laws. big news about the economy this morning. the government reports that some 113 jobs were created last month. about 60,000 fewer than wall street was expecting. however, the unemployment rate did drop to 6.6%. the lowest level in five years. and a dangerous derailment to show you here in colorado. 17 cars careening off the tracks. but take a look at this. one of the freight trains huge axles hurdles down the street there, toward a gas station, barely missing the pumps. that 2,000-pound axle did

destroy, though, two pillars holding up the building. and a brutal storm is bashing western europe. this giant wave krark over a sea wall in england. it flooded those buildings up to the fourth floor, as you can see across about four lanes of street there. not far away, a bus driving down this road all of a sudden became engulfed in sea foam. the driver did somehow avoid crashing. a cargo ship as rescuers had to abandon ship as the crew was hoisted into a helicopter. finally, a very sweet honor indeed for pope francis. take a look. an artist in italy carving a life-size statue of the pope out of a one-ton block of dark chocolate and there he is. >> all right. >> pope francis, impressed duly when he saw it firsthand, he should be. took the artist and 20 students one month to carve it. no word on how long it'll take to consume it. >> that's another story.

thanks, josh. now to the southern california firefighter who was put in handcuffs by police while trying to help victims of a car crash. the bizarre incident captured on camera. and abc's ryan owens has the story. >> okay, i don't have time for a cell phone. this is ridiculous. >> reporter: a firefighter in the back of a police cruiser. how did he end up in handcuffs? he says he was just doing his job. stopping to rescue two people in a flipped car on a california interstate. his firefighting colleagues cannot believe it. >> we're in the middle of patient care with patients on the freeway and we're trying to protect our scene and they're putting him in handcuffs at this time and walking him away. >> reporter: 12-year veteran jacob gregoire parked his fire truck so it blocked traffic on interstate 805 near san diego. making sure no cars came close to the flipped one or to the ambulance the driver and passenger were being loaded into. as their radio traffic makes clear the california highway

patrol wanted him to move his truck. >> everything's in the median fire blocking for no reason here. one and two lanes, we're trying to get them to move right now the firefighter refused and spent a half hour in the back of the police cruiser. when he says he should have been helping the injured. gregoire was never actually arrested and was released but his boss, the fire chief remains outraged. >> my engineer followed protocol and did exactly what he was supposed to do. >> reporter: the fire chief met with the head of the highway patrol and the two released this statement making nice with each other. "both of our agencies have the utmost respect for each other and our respective missions. this was an isolated incident." an incident some believe has caused a rift between the rescuers we all depend on in an emergency. for "good morning america," ryan owens, abc news, los angeles. >> and many are, indeed, hoping it's an isolated incident. >> we sure do. >> we do. all right, lara, you got the story of the morning.

it began as a fight over loud music, ended with the death of an unarmed teenager. michael dunn admits to killing the teen but is claiming self-defense and abc's ryan smith is tracking the case. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, george. michael dunn is being charged with both murder and attempted murder for shooting into a car full of young men and killing jordan davis in the process. but as this trial gets under way, we're seeing fierce arguments in court both from the prosecution and the defense and witnesses are stepping forward to talk about what they saw and heard that night. stop and listen closely. >> oh, my god, somebody is shooting. >> reporter: those are the gunshots that rang out at a jacksonville, florida, gas station on black friday, 2012 ending the life of 17-year-old jordan davis and this morning prosecutors continue pressing their case against this man, 47-year-old michael dunn who they say murdered davis after an argument over the teen's loud music. in opening statements thursday, prosecutors painted a software

developer as a cold, calculating killer. >> michael david dunn pointed a semiautomatic pistol at four unarmed kids and then drove off. >> reporter: one witness remembering dunn's aggressive words. >> you're not going to talk to me that way. >> reporter: another recalling the last moments of jordan davis' life. >> i pulled up to the car. there was a young man that had been hit. i checked for a pulse. >> reporter: but the defense telling a different story claiming that jordan davis with three other teens in this red suv intimidated dunn for asking them to turn down their music. >> you're dead, [ bleep ]. 24 is going down now with a shotgun barrel sticking out of the window or a lead pipe, whatever it was, a deadly weapon. >> reporter: police found no weapons but they challenged this grilling witnesses about whether they knew if davis was armed. >> are you focusing at all on the suv?

>> no, sir. >> were you even looking in that direction? >> no, sir. >> reporter: he pleaded not guilty. davis' parents in the courtroom yesterday must deal with the death of their son all over again. >> this is the first time they've heard the gunshots when they played the convenience store video. i imagine this is just a parents' worst nightmare. >> reporter: and more witnesses may take the stand today to talk about what they saw and heard that night and the jury in this case will be sequestered throughout the trial. george? >>ing 0, ryan, thanks. let's talk to dan abrams and this case coming into focus and it's not a stand your ground case. >> let's just put that off the table for a minute. there's no issue about the duty to retreat. there's no hearing before the trial to try to get it dismissed this. is classic self-defense. he is saying he reasonably believed that he was in danger of for his safety or his life. >> that eyewitness we saw right there undercutting that claim. >> oh, that's a crucial witness. i mean, if he is saying as this

eyewitness said, you know, you're not going to talk to me that way. that's not self-defense, that's rage, that's anger and that's a big problem for the defense. >> and the defense does have this theory, no gun was found on the scene with teenagers but they have some kind of a theory that the teens had a gun and then ditched it. >> the defense needs there to be a gun. without a gun it is hard to see how this defense prives here meaning, again, what was reasonably going through his mind, so he says it was either a gun or some sort of stick or something like that that was threatening him. now, the only evidence i think we're going to hear in this case about that is going to be either from him, the interviews or him on the stand. >> that's what i was going to get to. if this is all about what's going on in his head he'll have to testify. >> or they can use his police statements. i think he has to get on the stand. this is not an easy defense or a george zimmerman case where there was an injury on the back of his head. this was a totally different

case and i think he'll have to get up there and explain what he says happened, most importantly, what was going through his head at that moment without that, i don't see how they succeed. >> we'll be watching. dan abrams, thanks very much. >> we certainly will. now to the search for a missing newborn if wisconsin. kayden powell disappeared from his home at just 5 days ole. police say a person of interest is in custody but still no trace of the baby. abc's mara schiavocampo is here with this story. this is just heartbreaking. >> really heartbreaking story and just seems like the unthinkable. a baby simply vanishing in the middle of 9 night. now federal officials are among the 40 law enforcement officials assisting in the search but so far there seem to be more questions than answers. looking through dumpsters, canvassing streets, interviewing neighbors, all part of the massive search for a newborn who simply disappeared in the middle of the night. kayden powell is just 6 days old. early thursday morning police

responded to a 911 call from the infant's mother that he was gone. >> investigators continue to evaluate the information being compi compiled. at this time no suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made. >> reporter: officials say the baby's mother, 18-year-old brianna marshall says she woke up to find her son gone, missing from his bassinet. the baby's father, 23-year-old bruce powell and two other family members were also staying in the house including kristin smith who left for her own home in colorado around 1:30 a.m. the last those in the house remembering seeing the baby. hours later, law enforcement officials arrested smith on an outstanding warrant 170 miles away but say she is not a person of interest in this case. >> i'm already devastated because he's gone. i've had my great nephew one time and that was yesterday. >> reporter: now the fbi has joined local and state police in the investigation.

yesterday. you see her being removed from the course there. her parents said she would be okay but, again, a serious injury suffered already. meanwhile, here at home, the pacific northwest is bearing the brunt of a nasty winter storm. up to a foot of snow and ice, in fact, blamed for the pileup you see there, 20 vehicles in all in southern washington. one person was killed in that accident, and more snow is coming to the region. meanwhile, near philadelphia, power crews say this week's ice storm there is the worst they've ever dealt with. they hope to restore power to most of the some 300,000 customers still left in the dark by the end of business today. and one day after stocks posted their best day of the year, wall street will be reacting to the new jobs report out this morning. some 113,000 jobs were created this morning. that's sharply lower than what wall street was expecting. but the unemployment rate fell to the lowest level in five years to 6.6%.

wait for it. you're going to have to wait for it. it's coming. i should mention on that picture it was a moment of victory for me to reach sochi. it was quite a long way and while our main job, of course, is to keep our eyes on the games, there is a sochi you won't see while watching the events on television, so we went inside the city's most fun, unusual and hottest spots and it all began with that plane trip. all right. my journey to sochi. round two. a labor of love. five cities, four airports traveling 6,426 miles over 30 hours. i even celebrated my birthday during my layover in frankfurt. my loving family back home singing to me over the phone. >> we left the airport. and we're walking the streets. we're shopping duty-free, of course, and seeing a city i've never seen before so kind of a nice little detour before we head to sochi.

filling up right now on the sights and sounds of frankfurt. and then the final flight. >> looks like we're making it. and now after a drive on the now infamous $8 billion highway, with the black sea behind me, the caucasus mountains in front of me, and the five rings above me, welcome to sochi. so what should you do once you're in sochi? ♪ head straight to the famous bath houses or banyas to relax with a honey massage and hop into a hot tub made for one. hungry? head to a taunt for russia's famous kebabs and ketchup curry, traditional feast breads. but if that's not your style you can always head to this walk-up mcdonald's. ♪ nightclubs are always popular but the open air markets are more my scene. kiwi and apple. apple.

good morning. san jose police investigating a stabbing outside a downtown hotel. police say a person was found stabbed in the neck in front of the marriott after 3:00. investigators believe the victim may have been attacked in a parking garage and walked or was taken to the marriott hotel where the person was found and taken to the hospital. yesterday morning a man was fatally stabbed in the same area. it's not known if the two attacks are connected. the commute better than yesterday but still trouble spots. >> certainly are. there's light drizzle sweeping through the north bay. causing accidents. in place 101 at hern avenue, delay as you approach highway 12. a look outside on the drier
