potential to apply this to people. this is published in the journal "neuron". parents know some children are more likely to eat their vegetables if they are paired with something fanting. researchers at arizona state university looked at 29 children able 3s to 5. each child was given boiled cauliflower or brussel spouts for a week, served with either cream cheese or plain. after that everyone received the plain vegetable its and the cream cheese kids liked the plain stuff more than those who had only eaten plain sprouts. turns out there was no different with the cauliflower. subject of food a fund raising campaign kicks off tomorrow in silicon valley to put more salad bars for schools. it's estimated only 166 out of 10,000 schools in the region have them. abc7 news reporter david louie visits the school where kids are making healthy eating choices even if they are picky eaters. >> reporter: right in the center of the cafeteria at baker elementary is a salad bar. it may be sized for kids, but the selection of fruits and

vegetables is as varied as what you would find in a restaurant. as part of the lunch program here, the youngsters must choose two items. >> sometimes healthy stuff is, like, yummy but sometimes it's just gross. >> reporter: nativity can skip what she doesn't like because she has choices. today, corn and fruit salad to go with her nachos it is estimated fewer than half of the schools in silicon valley have salad bars. a state initiative to promote healthy eating has prompted non-profit groups, labor unions and business to raise the money to install 100 new salad bars over the next three years. >> well, if we just ate all the main foods then we wouldn't have a lot of, like, minutes and stuff, you could be, like, stronger and grow better. >> you want to be really tall when you grow up, right? >> yeah. >> reporter: however, kids can be, well, kids. >> i don't like broccoli or brussels sprouts.
4:48 pm
>> do they serve them here at school? >> yeah. >> and what happens when they're there? >> just get other stuff. >> reporter: sometimes the kids discover new foods they have never tried before, such as kale and jicama. >> one parent surprised their child ate jicama. they never realized that their child liked jicama. so, that's great thing. >> reporter: tiffany discovered she likes tomatoes. they are not gross. it's really heart-warming to see that young kids can make healthy eating choices and the goal is to get this spread throughout silicon valley. in san jose, david louie, abc7 news. all right. going to turn to consumer news now, 7 on your side's michael f finny here with questions. >> the questions here, january l. emailed i received $50 appreciation check from my employer but not part of mile. w-2. do i need report it on my tax

returns? sadly, you have to report that. if you look there's a line that says "other income," that's what this is considered, other income, that's on line 21. make sure you put the information down there because your boss no doubt is going to report it so they will end up catching you, be careful with that one. second question from mike w.. he asks, can a store require a minimum purchase amount when i use a credit card? there is a lot of confusion around this, michael with good reason. for a decade or more, i told everyone all the time during this program that stores were not allowed to have a minimum. now, it was not against the law, it was simply a rule but the rule was enforced by master card and american express and visa so, stores just simply couldn't do t we'd hear about it we would call up and they would be forced no to do it. okay. but a couple years ago, a new law was passed and it said they can have a minimum charge, up to $10, not allowed to be any more
4:50 pm
than $10, but often, you will see on a cab, $10 minimum cab, see it in stores as well, completely legal them don't have to require a minimum, but they can. okay. so here's the third question. a twitter user asked if mailboxes are broken into, shouldn't the police investigate? absolutely not. as a matter of fact, they are all but told not to investigate. it's a federal crime because it's a federal agency, the u.s. postal service, and they have their own investigators. so, if you have a proub with mail, you contact the postal service and then they go to work. by the way, many local police agency does work on this, because what they will find is going into some neighborhood, all of a sudden, the thieves have figured out no one's home during the day or whatever, but it is the postal service responsibility, local police just lend a hand. >> all right, thank you, michael. >> sure. up next, a live report on a beer bash in the north bay. >> hundreds are waiting in line, not in the dark, just to get a taste. we will be right back with that.
