the wettest areas will receive up to 8 inches of rainfall and we have a wind advisory in the delta until 11:00 tomorrow morning. wind gusting up to 20 miles per hour from time to time, and potential tree damage and power outages possible, of course. there's more on the way, going to be a weekend long rainfall event. i'll give you a look at the entire weekend and seven days head in a few minutes. >> let's give you a look at how the weather affecting traffic around the bay area. >> a laud of red on the roadways indicating traffic is moving slowly. speeds down to 11 miles per hour, northbound 101 along the peninsula, just 21 on southbound 280 and san jose, 22 miles per hour on the oakland maze. a mess out there. >> let's take a live look, you can see interstate 80 through berkeley is slow going, always slow this time of day on a friday night, but particularly so in the rain.

>> we're taking you to south bay now. this is highway 101 toward interstate 80. southbound traffic really backed up here. >> and next to the san francisco skyway, highway 101 always busy on a friday night. as you can see with ribbons of headlights and taillights in the opposite direction, slow going tonight. >> the north bay is expected to get a lot of rain with the system. along the russian river, they need it. a bifishing ban there is all bua done deal. leon? >> the ban will be in place to protect several fish that need to begin spawning. i can tell you, talking to people today, a lot of people living along the russian river welcomed today's rain. despite the rain, this man was out fishing in the russian river this morning. he expects to do more before the ban goes into effect later this month. >> after this rain, it's going to take a few days because the water is going to get real muddy

and the fishing will be tough. if we get a good break, a few days after the storm, it should be good, should clear up and a lot of guys will be fishing their hearts out. >> because the river levels are so low, spawning fish are finding it impossible to go upstream to find a place to lay their eggs. >> the volume of water is going to give them the signal to move up and start their move so they can spawn and get their migration started. for the creeks where spawning takes place are also dry. robin johnson has lived in this area for 17 years. she was excited to see the rain. >> this is going to possibly be enough over the weekend to open up those creeks and allow the fish to get free because they have just been hanging out. >> the ban will affect some local businesses. kings sport and tackle is one of them, but the russian river chamber of commerce said other businesses understand how important it is to protect these fish. >> we love our resources, we

love our wildlife, and we're here to protect them and make sure they're here for future generations. if that means we need to impose a ban, then i guess that's what's best for the community at large. >> the ban will be in effect until april 30th. it may have to be extended. >> late word tonight from the white house, president obama is coming to california next friday to assess the effects of the drought. we understand he'll be going to fresno where he will hear from central valley farmers. back to our storm now. it sent this tree branch crashing down. that large branch fell on a pickup truck, completely blocking the sidewalk. this happened just before three:00 this afternoon. fortunately, no one was hurt. >> city workers are trying to stay one step ahead of the storm. not easy to do. public crews were busy cleaning out storm drains so they don't flood nearby buildings. a lot of businesses are not taking chances. this san francisco store had already piled sandbags along its

front doors. san francisco is giving away sandbags at its dpw warehouse. >> if you're headed into the mountains for a weekend of skiing, getting there could be a challenge. let's take a look at this video in the tahoe area. this is highway 50 at echo summit. no chains required so far, but take a look at what's happening on interstate 80 at donner's summit. it's a mess, and it's been like this for much of the day. lilian kim is live at sugar bowl ski resort off i-80. you made it without much trouble. how are the conditions out there right now? >> well, dan, it's been snowing nonstop ever since we got here this morning. no break. the snow is wet and heavy. what's commonly called air cement. people here say it's exactly what's needed right now. skiers and snowboarders were wondering when the snow would come. some had even given up hope. >> we were starting to

there are a lot of holes in the story, and police aren't helping us fill those in. but in fact, they probably know a lot more than they're telling the media, but this is what they are telling me. around 2:00 p.m. this afternoon, police got a call from outside of this house, asking them to check in on the people who are living at this apartment in the 1800 block of 34th avenue. when they showed up, they found a woman in her 70s dead on the floor and a male relative between 40 and 50, still conscious, in the house. police say there was evidence of forced entry and they're calling this a home invasion. >> neither one of the victims appeared to have any visible injuries. so it's unknown the cause of death for the female. >> now, we don't know what the relationship is between the man and the woman. and right now, he's down at the police department answering questions. one of those questions might be why he himself didn't call the police. we also still don't know who that person is outside of the apartment that called police to

go check in on them. the police are still finding out more information. we're still gathering information, and you can follow us on twitter at abc 7 news bay area. reporting live in oakland, allen wong. thank you. >> state work place safety officials are investigating the death of two men crushed to death while unloading slabs of granite. the accident happened this morning at galaxy granite in the petrero hill area. they were planning to unload the truck when a slab slipped. >> they have a process, i don't know exactly what the process is, but big slabs like that, and it seems as if the slabs shifted as they were moving them out and two people were caught underneath it. >> the slabs were so heavy, rescue crews had to break them into smaller pieces just to move them. a representative from galaxy granite said she is deeply saddened by the accident but would not comment further on what happened. cal osha said they don't have any previous working violations.

>> a stunning loss at uc berkeley today. a football player collapsed and died while training with this team. defensive end ted agu was a beloved member of the team and his death is hitting the cal community very hard. nick smith is on campus live for us tonight. nick, what a blow. >> dan, you know, ted agu's death was sudden. he collapsed just a few yards from here after a training this morning with the rest of his football team. less than three hours later, the 21-year-old football player would be pronounced dead at an area hospital. >> our players loved him dearly. and he was a big part of our family. >> cal football coach sonny dikes had one point had to choke back tears as he talked about 21-year-old ted ague. >> this is something that is very hard on all of us. certainly ted's family. his football family, the entire cal community. >> cal's 6'1" 240 pound defensive end collapsed during

what the team doctor described as a routine conditioning workout. >> like i said, i have been with ted since he came here, and he never had a problem with a workout or practice. >> ague, number 35, seen in the video, was admired for his hard hits and great tackles. good enough to earn his way on the team as a walk-on. school officials wouldn't give history about his medical history or risk factors but noticed he was having trouble after a supervised training run this morning. that's when one of the assistants stopped him. they said he was alert and communicating at first and then things took a turn for the worst. by the time the team gault him insi inside. he was unresponsive. he eventually died at the hospital. >> there is no greater tragedy than for us to lose one of our incredibly bright and passionate young people far too soon. >> ugu was well known for his

the bay area is under arrest for having child pornography. police arrested the 64-year-old at home in martinez. officers found the porn when they went to do a welfare check on someone living there. investigators not releasing many details right now, but they tell us he has taught in at least one bay area school district. >> a man accused of drowning his

dog last august has been found not guilty by a solano county jury. the jury deliberated less than two hours before aquitting 21-year-old brian kavanagh of animal cruelty. they say he admitted drowning a female pit bull in a pond in fairfield. cavgnaw's attorney said he suffers from epilectic seizures that render him unaware of his behavior. >> san francisco police are asking anyone who saw the accident that killed a 78-year-old man to come forward. this was the scene tuesday in the city's sunset district at sunset and yorba. they were ahead shortly after a car struck isaac burnson in the cross walk. they arrested the driver on manslaughter charges and failing to yield to a pedestrian in a cross walk. they want any witnesses to contact them. >> the people who put on the bottle rock festival last year have filed for bankruptcy. the festival's organizers admitted they booked too many

doubt flight delays as the rain is falling there, and the crowd ceilings are relatively low. temperatures in the low 50s.nco livermore. from our rooftop camera here at abc7, these are the forecast features. rain will intensify over night, soaking rain, and partial clearing on monday and tuesday. here's a sat lyle image showing you where this moisture is originating from, reaching all the way back and a long plume to the hawaiian islands and all moving in our direction. that's why we'll have such heavy and steady rain for such a long period of time. 7:00 this evening, we'll let it run, through tomorrow, and through sunday, and you'll notice there's almost no end, no significant break in the steady stream of rainfall that will continue until about 5:00 monday morning. at that time, we expect rainfall

totals to reach 4 to 8 inches in the north bay mountain. 1 1/2 to 3 inches in the low elevations and 3 to 5 inches generally across the mountains. in the sierra, a winter storm warning is in effect until 4:00 tomorrow afternoon. look for a 1 to 2 feet of snow at or just above 6,000 feet. 2 to 4 feet of snow above 7,000 feet. snow levels will be rising on saturday, which means low level elevations will see the snow changing over to rain. back to the bay area, overnight tonight, under very rainy, wet conditions, low temperatures will drop only into the low 50s, and then tomorrow, not much milder than the overnight period. rainy with high temperatures only in the upper 50s to maybe around 60 in some spots. the seven-day forecast, two days of soaking rain this weekend with partial clearing by midday on monday. a fairly dry day on tuesday. a slight chance of rain on wednesday. showers in the north bay

well, here's an unusual sight. a salad bar smack dab in the middle of a school cafeteria, but a fund-raising campaign that kicks off tomorrow in silicon valley could change all of that. it's estimated fewer than half of the schools in silicon valley have salad bars. this is at baker elementary in san jose. now a state initiative to spur healthy eating has spurred groups to raise money for 100 new school salad bars. still, it may not be surprising that the kids' reactions are mixed. >> if we just ate all of the main foods, then we wouldn't have a lot of, like, vitamins and stuff. so that you could be like stronger. >> sometimes healthy stuff is, like, yummy, but sometimes it's like gross. >> the silicon valley leadership group says the adult and kids fun run for salad bar money is on for saturday, rain or shine. > hundreds of people lined up in santa rosy this morning in

several government scientists say the current drought is the latest reminder of critical changes happening to san francisco bay. some of those changes are likely to have a big impact on the future. tonight's report ride along with biologists trying to make sure we're ready. >> just after sunrise at the port of redwood city, a crew of scientists heads out on san francisco bay. a picture perfect cruise, with a purpose. >> we're regularly taking the pulse of the bay. >> this is the research vessel polaris. one of the oldest working federal boats on the water. >> this is all the original glass. >> this 97-foot boat was a luxury yacht when it was built in 1927. now, its elegant wood trimmed lounges are laboratories operated by the u.s. geologist survey. senior scientist jim carn has used the ship to study bay water since 1976. >> this station is about prath meters to the bottom. >> fran bay is constantly

changing. right now, the drought has cut the flow of freshwater so parts of the bay are unusually salty. >> we're seeing the highest levels recorded in the 40 years we have been measuring. >> this research team goes ouz about 20 times a year, sampling water in specific spots over a 90-mile route. it's a carefully corioographed routine with high-tech instruments done exactly the same way every time. >> row have to move quickly, we collect a lot of samples and there's not a lot of time between each station. some are light sensitive. so we have ugueth them processed and preserved as quickly as possible. >> some changes to bay water are natural. some are caused by humans. and it's not always obvious what's good and what's bad. take the water running into the sink. the water is actually coming from the bay, and as you can see, it's very clear. but that's a relatively recent change. for years, it was much murkier, mainly because of gold mining

francisco bay is much healthier than it was in the 1950s and '60s thanks to the clean water act, but scientists say new threats to water quality are turning up all the time, and every change in climate is like a new experiment with the water in the bay. >> well, at least our weather pattern has finally changed and we have the series of storms to deal with. >> spencer christian is tracking it all on live doppler 7 hd. >> it has started raining. it's going rain nonstop through the weekend, and here is live doppler 7 hd. rain widespread across the bay area. a pocket of moderate to heavy activity near oakley. it was just a momepoint ago near antioch. it's moved eastward quickly. let's move completely eastward to the sierra where it's snowing near lake tahoe. chains are required on the highways. chain requirements are going to be in effect through tomorrow. here's a look at state-wide conditions tomorrow. rain over the northern two thirds to three quarters of the state, including the bay area.

good evening. weather is certainly going to be a factor throughout the weekend at the pebble beach national proam. round two, winds gusting up to 27 miles per hour. rain off and on, although the scenery is still spectacular on the monterey peninsula. peyton manning from the bunker on 10 nestles the shot to one a foot and a half. watch the wind, if not for the wind, that might have gone right in. phil mickelson on 14 at pebble for birdie. an up and down day. 1 over 73 and he's 5 back. jordan speights had a 5 under 67. tied for the lead at minus 9 along with jimmy walker paying a difficult spy glass course. just missed for birdie on 7. now birdies for walker in the first two rounds. as we mentioned, tied for the lead. >> on to baseball.

thoughts about whaumet really matters. as we welcomed the rain, we're reminded it's not nearly enough to elouvalleviate the drought. we can't control the weather, but in some respects this is a self-inflicted wound. it should not be reserved for crisis. it should be how we liver our lives. i have never forgotten an image from my teenage years. my father hosted a visitor from east germany, a country still behind the iron country in those days. i remember him washing the hands in the kitchen, turning on the faucet for only a moment, just to wash his hands. from wenls he came, water was not to be squandered, any time, drought or no drought. it's obscene to waste water, especially when a small amount of effort adds up to such a big impact. we welcome the return of our wet weather, but what really matters is we honor our planet and ourselves by protecting precious resources rain or shine.
