course, in russian history. take a look at these dancers performing a scene portraying the russian revolution of 1917, obviously a rich history there. my favorite, though, was the the reenactment of tolstoy's "war and peace," i think. >> having read it several times. >> in russian. >> it loses something in translation. >> even better in russian. but there was that one mistake seen around the world. snowflakes morphing into olympic rings, but as you see there, one flake did not quite make the transition. >> yes, people in russia actually didn't see that happen though on television, so let's take a look at the medal count right now. so far norway has three medals while the u.s., canada and sweden have one apiece, and it's just the start of several weeks of high drama. let's get right to our "gma" olympics headquarters in sochi, russia. abc's amy robach is there following all of the action. quite a show last night, amy. >> it was spectacular, and, yes, we did not see that malfunction here in russia, bianna and dan. and we're going to get right to that breaking news.

team usa winning the first gold of the sochi games. snowboarder sage kotsenburg flying to olympic gold on the slopestyle course and a big win for the u.s. women's hockey team beating finland 3-1 in the qualifying round and they advance to play switzerland on monday. but as we were all just talking about, everyone here still abuzz over last night's opening ceremonies from bears to ballerinas, fireworks to snowflakes, this show did not disappoint. it was an electrifying start to the sochi olympic games. thousands of spectators packed into fisht stadium to witness the opening ceremony and the largest gathering of countries ever in winter olympics history. it was a performance nearly seven years in the making. above the crowd, a young girl took us through russia's vast history. a 200-foot-long horse and carriage seemed to fill the stadium. dancers spun to the legendary music of "swan lake" and reenacted tolstoy's "war and peace," and a giant sickle and

hammer symbolized the iron curtain. a few stumbles, a stray dog and one bear had many tweeting. despite the many issues surrounding the sochi games, there was only one major malfunction when the fifth olympic ring seen here failed to reveal. >> when you are thinking the weeks and months coming up to sochi that you would say that the only thing wrong at the opening ceremonies at the sochi olympic games would be a malfunction with a snowflake, that is a really good piece of news. >> reporter: the atmosphere behind the scenes at the stadium was pulsing. the 230 members that make up team usa excited to make their big entrance. one powerful supporter of the team extended his well wishes friday to each and every athlete. >> we couldn't be prouder of you, and we can't wait to see what you accomplish in the next few weeks. >> reporter: a team of six brought the flame into the venue. among them tennis player sochi native maria sharapova and finally the lighting of the olympic cauldron, a message to the world to let the games begin.

and, yes, while i was watching all that went on last night, i'll be honest, i was really looking at the fashion of the night. for us ladies we want to do a quick recap of the winners and some surprises of last night's choices. germany certainly standing out with their rainbow bright uniforms. i'm being kind when i say standing out. also, bermuda. many people are wondering, did they lose their luggage donning flip-flops and shorts? bermuda shorts, of course, to walk into the world arena last night. by the way, the temperature was around 40 degrees and, finally, team usa, because their uniforms when they were first revealed a couple of weeks ago, i know that there were some people questioning the busy design, but i know when i watched them walk out en masse, i thought it was spectacular. it was "the star-spangled banner" and a source of pride. i thought it was beautiful and stunning. so i'll move on to some of the bigger news, a big tweet heard around the world today or seen round the world today, a tough day for u.s. bobsledder johnny quinn who apparently got

stuck in his bathroom after taking a shower and the door jambed. he had no phone to call for help. there you see the aftermath. he used his bobsled pushing olympic skills he's developed over the years. turns out if you can push a 1500-pound sled you can also break through a sochi bathroom door. and finally, one of the most popular olympic sports has a big night tonight. figure skating, ladies, team figure skating kicks off with a short program represented by 22-year-old ashley wagner, and, of course, all eyes will also be on u.s. ice dancing pair charlie white and meryl davis, who will dance across the ice tonight in the team short program, and dan and bianna, it's interesting because charlie and meryl have not lost a competition in two years, so fingers crossed. they've been together for 16 years since they were 10. we'll all be rooting for them here. >> the big question is whether they can break down a bathroom door, as well. now, that was incredible that the construction was down to the wire. they had seven years to prepare for these olympics. >> yeah, we've seen a lot of hammers and a lot of saws. i mean it's amazing. like we're like

getting bricks laid down as we're walking on the path. there's still a lot of work being done here. >> yeah. >> all right, amy. >> great to see you out there. >> surrounding the fun there are some serious concerns. in fact, right in the middle of the opening ceremony a security scare, a man on a plane heading to turkey attempted a hijacking demanding that the pilot divert to sochi. the man, who you can see here being carried off the plane, turned out to be under the influence, but the incident really highlighted a major concern as these games got under way, so abc's brian ross, our chief investigative correspondent, is here. even though this guy was on something, there were -- they really did take this very seriously. >> well, they did. they scrambled jets, and he was so much under the influence of whatever it was, he was actually persuaded they had landed in sochi so they tricked him into thinking that, then police came on board and subdued him. he was taken away. it was a fluke, but had they actually flown into sochi, they are prepared apparently to shoot down the passenger jet and put

anti-aircraft missile batteries in the mountains above the village, and we're told that would be one of the options is to shoot that plane down if it tried to make an attack against the olympic village. >> be prepared to shoot it down. that would be extreme measures. does this highlight, as we said before, a real concern? i mean, we know that they've built this ring of steel, so they are really ready for something potentially bad to happen. >> a very serious concern. one, they're still looking for any possible suicide bombers, the so-called black widow. we're also told by american authorities the russians have picked up on what they consider to be an ongoing plot connected to that toothpaste bomb scare. the toothpaste was banned on all flights going in because of what they believe is an ongoing effort to build a bomb and blow it up in a plane in russia that would use not just toothpaste to hide explosives but also detonators taken from weapons seized from islamic fighters in syria, so there's a very real plot they believe is ongoing and they're very concerned about it. >> heightened alert for the next couple of weeks. and, brian, we know you'll stay on the story. appreciate it. >> meantime, let's get the morning's other stop stories from ron. hey, ron. >> hi there, bianna.

and dan, good morning, everyone. in the news, mounting concern this morning after an american missionary detained in north korea has been sent back to a harsh labor camp. kenneth bae had been getting treatment in a hospital for his deteriorating health before the move, which was disclosed on friday. the u.s. state department says it is, quote, deeply concerned about the transfer of bae and urged north korea to release him. bae has been held for 15 months for what north korea calls hostile acts against that country. and a newborn baby snatched from his parents' bedside is back home this morning in michigan. 6-day-old kayden powell was found by a police chief in iowa outside a gas station swaddled inside of a storage bin. it's unclear how long the baby was outside in that bitter cold weather. kayden's mother went to sleep with him next to her on thursday, woke up to find him missing. the mother's stepsister has been charged with kidnapping the baby. and after months of defiance, new york yankee star alex rodriguez, well, he is dropping his lawsuit over his suspension and has agreed to sit out the entire upcoming baseball season.

a-rod will no longer pursue legal actions against major league baseball, its commissioner and the players union. the lawsuits were considered unlikely to succeed and rodriguez was initially suspended for 211 games for use of performance-enhancing drugs. an arbitrator reduced that to 162 games, a full season. and now to an explosive end in a drag racing competition, a driver walks off unscathed after his race car bursts into flames and is shredded into pieces. this is something you have to see to believe. abc's michelle franzen has this story. >> reporter: in a split second barreling down the track and topping 300 miles per hour, a funny car drag racer explodes. the car's fiberglass shell shearing off in every direction at the national hot rod association's winternationals in pomona, california. in slow motion, the force of the blast so powerful, it's hard to believe anyone could make it out alive. but watch again, this time from

a camera mounted inside the car. the driver survives the blast still in his seat as the totaled racer rolls to a stop. the man behind the wheel, ron capps, walks away miraculously without serious injuries. >> first you're not sure what is exactly going on. all of a sudden the race car you're driving is a convertible and you see sky and flames and pieces flying. >> reporter: it's not the first time capps has had a close call. this youtube video shows a similar explosion capps survived in minnesota last summer. for "good morning america," michelle franzen, abc news. new york. >> and amazingly, the engine and other parts of that car actually survived intact, and they are being prepared now and should be ready for the next race. yes, mr. ron capps will do it again apparently. >> yeah, that would be the end of my career. >> pretty amazing. i'm done. >> that's when you retire. >> you think? >> all right. thanks, ron. >> thanks ron. now, to the latest powerful winter storm blasting through the pacific northwest.

it's the second straight round of serious snow for the region and abc's aditi roy has the latest. >> reporter: overnight, another round of nasty snow and rain blanketed the northwest. drivers in portland, oregon, had to navigate messy roads and freezing rain. stranded cars and collisions littered the highways. some vehicles couldn't even make it a few feet without slipping and sliding. some people decided it's better to just stay off the streets. >> it's a struggle, but we'll get through it. >> reporter: at portland international airport, near whiteout conditions canceled 50 flights friday night. the unexpected snow and cold temperatures even took some home furnaces out of commission. >> kind of felt like what it feels like outside. >> reporter: in parts of california, the storm brought plenty of rain. up to 2 inches falling overnight catching many residents by surprise. >> so we haven't had a rain like this, and it's flooding down into the basement. >> reporter: but it is still a

welcome relief from the fierce drought plaguing much of the state. >> it's -- i mean it's finally here, but it is here. >> reporter: for "good morning america," aditi roy, abc news, san francisco. and for more on what those folks can expect, we want to welcome meteorologist julie durda from our miami affiliate wplg with more on this relentless winter weather. it just doesn't want to go away, julie. >> that's right. they don't look impressive, but this is what they need. you can see, just over an inch of rain in san francisco as well as napa, almost an inch in redding and this is nothing compared to what they'll see in the next few days. let's check out the rain forecast for this area. an additional 3 inches will be possible anywhere from sacramento up to redding in the sierra. plenty of snow. up to portland anywhere between 2 to 3 inches of rain until sunday, and then check out what's going to happen as we go further into the next 48 hours, snow continues to fall from the pacific northwest. we are expecting snow stretching all the way to the east into the

rockies, again, the sierra, california, seeing 12 inches, something they just need for this time of year, but it's not going to put a dent in the drop for them. dan? >> not going to put a dent in the drought. i heard they need 18 inches this month in order to do that. julie, thank you. we'll get more from you coming up. now, though to the graphic new videotape of the case of a retired police captain who shot a man after an alleged argument in a movie theater in florida. for the first time we are now seeing the moment the shot was fired. look closely at the right side of your screen there. you see the victim's arm reach over the chair and grab the shooter's popcorn and throw it at him, then the gun comes out and is fired. on friday the judge in this case made a major decision and abc's ryan smith has the story. >> and i'm going to detain mr. reeves pretrial. >> reporter: obvious relief. the reaction overnight of nicole oulson after hearing a judge deny bond to the accused murderer charged with shooting and killing her husband,

43-year-old chad oulson, in a movie theater last month after an argument over texting. >> i'm just very happy and relieved by the judge's rulingment. i have no doubt in my mind it was the right decision and want to thank the state. >> reporter: it comes after new infrared surveillance video played in court that shows the incident unfolding inside the theater. here is reeves leaning over his seat telling oulson not seen on camera to turn his cell phone off, then he gets up to talk to the manager of the theater. minutes later, reeves is back. then the moment that changed everything. watch closely. oulson seems to grab something, throw it in reeves' direction. that's when reeves draws his gun and shoots. watch again. the confrontation and the gunshot over in seconds. >> as soon as i pulled the trigger, i said, oh, this is stupid. >> reporter: also heard in court, audiotapes from police interviews with reeves just after the shooting. >> it scared the hell out of me. i thought the guy was fixing to beat the [ bleep ] out of me. i was defending myself. the guy was very aggressive and considerably younger.

>> reporter: but oulson's wife said her husband never got violent. >> i did not see any pushing or shoving. he said, dude, what's your problem. >> reporter: even reeves who pled not guilty admits to police he regrets pulling the trigger. >> if i had to do it over again, it would have never happened. we would moved. >> reporter: the next pretrial hearing set for march. for curtis reeves unless a court overturns his bail decision, he'll stay behind bars until a jury of his peers decides his fate. for "good morning america," ryan smith, abc news, atlanta. >> such incredible video, our thanks to ryan. well, we're going to turn to the big hollywood stars who turned out to say farewell to the extremely talented but troubled actor philip seymour hoffman. the oscar winner who was found dead in his apartment sunday of an apparent drug overdose was mourned at a private funeral here in manhattan and abc's newest correspondent mara schiavocampo has the story. >> reporter: meryl streep, joaquin phoenix, cate blanchett and comedians chris rock and

louis c.k. friday afternoon at new york's church of st. ignatius loyola, some of hollywood's biggest names said good-bye to screen legend philip seymour hoffman. filing in behind his casket hoffman's partner of 15 years mimi o'donnell and three children, tallulah, willa and son cooper. >> cooper's old enough to know what's going on, and he's had a few breakdowns but he's taking it pretty well. he's a super special kid. phil did a good job. >> reporter: many of those who attended had worked with hoffman. actor peter gerety made two films with hoffman. >> there was so much loss and so much pain and, you know, hundreds of people just crying, weeping. >> reporter: mourning and reflecting. academy award-winning writer aaron sorkin wrote two of hoffman's films. in an obit for "time" magazine, sorkin, a recovering addict

himself writes that hoffman once told him, "if one of us dies of an overdose, probably ten people who were about to won't. he meant that our deaths would make news and maybe scare someone clean." hoffman's service was filled to capacity, so packed, some were reportedly turned away. a large turnout for a man who clearly touched so many. >> i think he left an enormous amount of love behind and people whose lives that he touched and always will always be affected by his life and his art. >> reporter: as for those who weren't able to attend, there will be another opportunity to say farewell to hoffman. a larger public memorial is planned for later this month. now, turning to the investigation, police say they're still trying to determine where and how hoffman got the drugs that he apparently overdosed on, so that narcotics investigation is ongoing. but so much support for such a talented actor. >> so sad, especially for his three young children. >> absolutely, a father first, of course. >> and once again, mara, we want to welcome you to abc news. it's great to have you. >> everyone has been so

friendly. i really appreciate it. >> everyone is pretty friendly here. we're a nice group. >> tough story to start you out on but we are very, very happy to have you. thanks again, mara. appreciate it. this morning, we are hearing for the first time from a 7-year-old girl who displayed extraordinary bravery. her name is megan winter, and she fell 50 feet to the bottom of a well. despite serious injuries, she kept her wits, and now she's telling her story from how she survived to the rescue effort that finally saved her, and abc's reena ninan is here with more. good morning. >> hey. good morning, guys. 7-year-old megan was just doing what kids her age love to do, playing outside, but it took a frightening turn, a turn that almost cost her life. it was the scariest moment in 7-year-old's megan winter's entire life. >> we were sitting on the ledge of the well. i went to go stand up, my hand slipped and i fell. >> reporter: plunging 50 feet down and trapped inside a narrow well in her grandparents' backyard, megan tried to break her fall. >> i was putting my hand against the well to stop myself from falling even deeper.

>> reporter: but couldn't hold. she landed upside down. her legs bent in the air unable to move. i was just so scared. >> reporter: megan's cousin tells her grandmother what happened. she phones 911 desperate for help and trying to stay calm. >> i was just screaming, my baby's in a well. will you please go in there and get my baby out? >> reporter: and there were moments she feared for megan's life. >> when she got quiet is when it scared me the most, when she would get quiet. >> reporter: with broken legs, a broken arm and fractures on her face and skull, megan sat trapped inside that well for over an hour until her rescue. >> a fireman named captain clay, he was the one that came down there and got me. then like carried me up the well to get me out. >> reporter: but her rescue was hardly the end. her mother said after spending nearly a month in the hospital, she had to relearn everything. >> they taught her how to do maintenance for herself. they taught her how to brush her own teeth.

we do begin this half hour with legendary director woody allen firing back against charges that he sexually molested his 7-year-old adopted daughter dylan more than two decades ago. >> he's come out swinging overnight blaming his ex-partner mia farrow for the abuse allegations and abc's gio benitez has the story. gio, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, dan, bianna, good morning. woody allen now says when he was first accused so many years ago during the breakup with mia farrow, he didn't give the allegations a second thought. in a new op-ed, he calls it a ploy. overnight woody allen speaking out for the first time in 20 years answering to scathing accusations that he molested his adopted daughter, calling the allegations ludicrous, "of course, i did not molest dylan. i loved her and hope one day she will grasp how she has been cheated out of having a loving father." the column penned by allen himself comes just one week after dylan farrow wrote in the same space about being sexually abused by the now 78-year-old film director. >> how are you?

>> reporter: rare commentary from a notoriously recluse who didn't even show up to get his lifetime achievement award. >> to accept the cecil b. demille award for my friend, woody allen. >> reporter: according to dylan it was that ceremony and the controversy that followed that gave her the courage to publish her version of events writing "these things happened so often, so routinely, so skillfully hidden from a mother that would have protected me had she known." but according to allen, he has already been exonerated by medical investigators. abc's juju chang spoke with elkan abramowitz, allen's lawyer during the sexual assault investigation. >> after a six-month exhaustive investigation, that group concluded the molestation didn't occur. >> reporter: allen places the blame not on his daughter but ex-girlfriend of 12 years, mia farrow. saying "not that i don't believe dylan has come to believe she's been molested. is it so inconceivable that after many years of this indaughtry in addition the image

of me mia wanted to establish has taken root." in an overnight response, dylan made a point-by-point rebuttal of allen's defense in "the times." >> wow. >> gabby giffords continuing with her remarkable recovery. >> she's worked so hard. >> she really has. >> for the past couple of years. >> a walking miracle. thank you, ron. let's get back to julie durda now from our miami affiliate. julie with a look at the national forecast. good morning once again. >> that's right. good morning, dan. in south florida, it's going to be beautiful this morning. i want to take you to a live shot of key west. ah, doesn't that look so nice? well, can i tell you, south florida has been the one place that really hasn't been affected by winter with temperatures soaring today to the lower 80s. even though there is a front that is going to move in, we are expecting just that slight chance of showers in the forecast. overall the forecast for them, warm, humid and a chance of showers will be moving into the area later on today. the big concern is what's going on across the northern portions of the state. as you can see, rain will continue to fall. temperatures sitting along the 50s and 60s into the panhandle and into the southeast. now, let's move back to the west where we have seen a major rainmaker and snowmaker. something they've definitely needed. this system will continue to

the day goes on. the faa reporting arrival delays of nearly three hours. you are advised to check with your airline if flying today. oakland and san jose are not reporting delays. lots of snow coming down in the sierra. this is video from heavenly mountain ski resort. chains are required on all vehicles on interstate -- sugar bowl now, i should tell you, interstate 80 and highway 50 except vehicles with snow tires. the snow is expected to dump as much as four feet around lake tahoe. sugar bowl plans to open 20 more runs for a total of 45. let's get a check of the rain right now with meteorologist li lisa argent. >> we have an urban and small stream flood advisory extended until 10:45 for the north bay including sonoma county as well. so we've got some ponding on the roadways and it has not stopped

raining all night long. upwards of 9 inches around mt. tam and you can see the heavier rain is in the north bay, but we do have rain from the south bay into the east bay. so we'll look for the waves of rain to continue throughout the morning hours. it will stay with us on the heavy side in the north bay through about 1:00 and then we'll see a break not until tonight. but even in the south bay, the peninsula, the rain is picking up. not looking at as much into our east bay valleys. up next, storm damage in the north bay and the wet weather continuing to pummel the area. abc 7 news reporter nick smith will have a live report. and a fatal wreck on highway 101 in the south bay. authorities still investigating what happened and how the victim is involved. abc 7 news at 8:00 is next.
