and sonoma county, so that includes all the way down through lucas valley and mill valley. so be careful out there. you can see the yellow indicating the heavier rain, but it is all over the north bay. you have seen anywhere from 7 to 9 inches in the hillier terrain, but down here from the south bay, the southern marin area into san francisco, it's been moderate and the south bay has been light. but it is beginning to pick up from the coast through palo alto. still san jose is lagging behind as well as livermore, but we are looking for a series of wet weather systems to continue to bring the wet weather right on through tomorrow. so anywhere from nearly 2 inches in oakland to 0.75 of an inch in san francisco and fremont, also along the coast. we'll talk about the timing of the rest of the day today through tomorrow, and good thing we're going to get a break because we will need it. >> lisa, thank you. nick smith is joining us live from the north bay this morning.

nick, there's the infamous lucky drive. what are you seeing out there? >> reporter: you know, katie, a couple of things i want to point off right off the top. as we've been standing here, we can't help but notice the number of drivers that have gone past lucky drive without their lights on. the rule is if you have your windshield wipers on, you should turn on your headlights. we're even seeing people go through on their cell phone. you can see exactly what i'm talking about. this is some of the flash flooding that lisa had mentioned earlier. the rain started thursday and isn't expected to break any time soon. the heaviest totals predicted to fall here in the north bay where a flood advisory has been issued. there are issues in some areas, roadway flooding in lane one on highway 101 south of sir francis drake boulevard right here, and some ponding beneath area overpasses. now, our dry weather has transitioned to a storm system with the potential to bring up to 7 inches of rain. the drought we're experiencing

now rivals the one we experienced back in 1975, but if current forecast holds, this pocket of heavy to moderate rain called an atmospheric river will last through the weekend. the moisture stretches all the way to the hawaiian islands. the bull's-eye of heavy rainfall will be right here over the bay area. right here in the north bay we could see as much as 3 to 7 inches of rainfall. again, we cannot help but notice how lane one of highway 101 have that flooding and that ponding. if you take a look at the cars flying through, you'll see how they are moving rather quickly and they need to slow down in these trouble spots. we'll continue to stay here, go around the area and see if we see any flash flooding. we'll have more weather updates on abc7news.com and i should have a live report tonight at both 5:00 and 6:00 to let you know how the weather affected

people here in the bay area. katie, you know what, i love doing the morning show with you. >> so happy to have you. sorry you have to be out in the rain like that. good advice about slowing down. wow, those cars look like they're going fast, at least from this perspective. thanks, nick. wet weather being blamed for bringing down a large tree in sonoma county last night. it fell across bohemian highway around 10:30. the tree took down some power lines so pg&e cruise had ews ha out. the storm sent a very large tree branch crashing down yesterday afternoon. the branch fell on a parked pickup truck and blocked the sidewalk. it happened on hait near steiner street. the good news there, nobody hurt. the rain also caused a few problems in the east bay. in concord on highway 242, a propane truck slid off the road and hit a tree. the tree fell onto the truck but luckily there was no propane inside. a firefighter, though, broke a rib trying to cut the tree off

of the truck. other than that, drivers say the roads in the east and south bays were relatively safe. >> it wasn't too bad. you know, not too many accidents. i didn't really see any when i was driving around. i was driving more around the south bay area, so it was pretty good. >> you think everybody is driving a little more cautiously? >> i think so. i think the speeds were down more and it worked out pretty well. >> the chp is advising drivers who need to be on slick roads this weekend to drive slowly and keep your headlights on. another reminder. you can track the rain using live doppler 7 hd on our weather app. our weather app also makes it easy for you to share your weather photos. download information is at abc7news.com/app. all lanes of 101 in san jose have reopened following a fatal crash overnight. it happened just after 11:00 north of brokaw road. police say several cars were involved and one person was found on the roadway. that person died at the scene. it's unclear if the victim was ejected from a vehicle or if it

was a pedestrian. all southbound lanes of 101 were closed while crews investigated. they reopened around 1:00 a.m. a cal football player has died after an early morning workout with the team yesterday. 21-year-old ted agu collapsed after a routine conditioning run outside memorial stadium. agu started having trouble breathing near the stadium's north entrance. trainers picked him up in a cart. they say he was communicating at first but quickly deteriorated. agu was unresponsive when the ambulance arrived. >> our players loved him dearly. and he was a big part of our family. now our family members will have to rely on each other in order to get through this period the best that we can. >> agu was a public health major and a member of the omega si phi fraternity. you can share this badge which

is on our website. police in snl are searan jo searching for a man who sexually assaulted a woman after claiming to be a cop. he's 5'4" to 5'6" with a muscular build. his car was captured on surveillance video. police say he picked up a woman on monterey road in san jose and threatened to arrest her if she didn't cooperate with him. a former teacher has been arrested on child pornography charges in the east bay. peter andrew polson was taken into custody in mar tetinezmart. he had previously worked as a teacher in the bay area but police are not saying where. oakland police have identified a 77-year-old woman who was found dead yesterday in an apparent home invasion. police discovered susan fong's body while doing a welfare check yesterday. officers found signs of forced

entry at the home and say she was dead inside but had no signs of physical injury. there was also a man at the house but he was not hurt. police are talking to him trying to figure out what exactly happened. they have not made any arrests. oakland police are offering up to $10,000 for any information that leads to an arrest in the case. what started as a plan to celebrate the lone 49er fan spotted in seahawk territory after the super bowl victory has turned into something different. they wanted to treat the young man to a niners game but now the plan is to do so much more. abc 7 news reporter has the story. >> reporter: this lonely niners fan being booed during the victory parade caught people's attention. >> it's like watching a streaker. you go what the, and you take a photo of it. >> reporter: the photo went viral and was seen by katherine tate of dublin. she's the founder of ladies of the empire, a 49ers booster. struck by the fan's heart and bravery, she reached out to

we have information there. all right, let's send it up to the roof where meteorologist lisa argen is tracking this storm. >> it is certainly windy and rainy here but we're looking at an urban small stream flood advisory to 10:45. here's a live look from mt. tam where it is 48 degrees. the winds are gusting to nearly 40 miles an hour. since thursday they have picked upwards of 10 inches of rain. i'll be back with our local rainfall totals and time out the rain for the rest of the weekend. hundreds of people standing out in the rain just hoping for a taste, but what exactly are they waiting for? we'll explain. and a bay area start-up that lets you run your own its data center and you don't have to worry about the nsa looking in.

welcome back, everyone. 8:13 on your saturday morning. looking now at live doppler 7 hd and tons of activity. finally this is what the bay area has been waiting for, but of course it can do as much damage as it can do good, so do be careful out there on the roads. the north bay being hardest hit. in fact there's a small stream flood advisory in effect that's been extended until 10:45. lisa argen with many more details coming up in her weather forecast in just a little bit. meantime, it was an event so big people began standing in line thursday night and they stayed in line in the rain, so what was it that brought hundreds of people to santa rosa for just a taste? wayne friedman has the story. >> reporter: they stood in a line that stretched around the block in the rain no less, a line that took hours to get through and in some cases longer to get to. >> i came up from reno. >> reporter: and for what?

welcome back, everyone. it's 8:22. a live look from our kgo hd roof cam. there's water on the lens, water on the roads. the sky is very gray and san francisco is not even the worst spot. the north bay just getting pounded. nick smith will bring us a live report in a few minutes and of course lisa will have your forecast. she's tracking all this rain and she'll be along shortly as well. well, the people who put on the bottle rock music festival in napa, they filed for bankruptcy. according to court documents, the festival's organizers admit they booked too many high-priced acts and most of them required

payment up front. the festival was also overstaffed and a dispute with a food vendor left it unable to pay workers and other vendors. despite $11 million in ticket sales, they still owe $4.5 million and only have assets of $600,000. new producers have taken over and are planning a second festival at the end of may. hollywood legend clint eastwood is being called a hero by a man he saved from choking. the 83-year-old eastwood was attending a party for the at&t pebble beach national pro-am and that is when he noticed 50-year-old steve john choking on a piece of cheese. eastwood quickly performed the heimlich maneuver. >> i was eating appetizers and drinking water. i threw a piece of cheese in that was not going to work down the same pipe as the water. and it -- i just choked. i was choking. clint could see that i was choking. he just grabbed my arm, turned me around and performed the heimlich on me and saved my

welcome back, everyone. we're coming up on 8:30 and we want to get to the forecast for you. it is pouring in some places. meteorologist lisa argen now with the forecast. >> hi there, katie. that's right. you know, our urban small stream flood advisory not only has been expanded but lengthened to 10:45 for marin and sonoma counties where we're looking at some very heavy rain. it hasn't stopped raining all night long. also it's picking up in the east bay and south bay so live doppler 7 hd shows vallejo and santa rosa where we're looking at rain rates at half an inch an hour. all of you in the urban and small stream flood advisory

until 10:45. look at richmond and hercules, martinez, over into oakland. now, as we head down the peninsula, it's not as heavy around san mateo and palo alto, but there are some good cells around hayward, 580, sunol is beginning to fill in and down through the santa cruz mountains we've picked up an inch of rain in the past three hours. so gilroy, morgan hill, you're wet as well. in the sierra nevada, the snow levels have continued to rise. and by tonight they'll be anywhere from 7500 to 8000 feet. so look at the wide-ranging totals. we're only over a tenth of an inch in san jose. ben lomond 2 inches. you can see the north bay 2 inches. oakland at 2.07 but the coastal hills getting that lift so from half moon bay southward, you're looking at pretty heavy rain as well. low to mid-50s with very gusty southwest winds. airport delays of over three hours and looking at winds over

35 miles an hour. so low 50s in fairfield. you picked up over 2.5 inches of rain as well since the overnight hours. so we're looking at a rainy and breezy day today. the rain doesn't let up until later on tonight. that's our break, but another wave moves in tomorrow at about this time and that's going to spread another inch to an inch and a half in parts of the south bay. so it looks like the north bay has been getting the heaviest now, but with this train of moisture all the way back to the subtropics, here's the way it looks for the next couple of hours. by 3:00 in the afternoon, it is raining everywhere. maybe not as heavy as it was in the north bay, but we're still looking at the wet weather through 10:00. and then by the overnight hours, this is when it picks up. 1:00 in the morning once again, the north bay looking at very heavy rain. wouldn't be surprise if if there was another urban small stream advisory. but by tomorrow morning it's the peninsula and the south bay when you will pick up probably your inch of rain there. but the rain continues through

sunday night. by monday just a slight chance of showers and we're still looking at these hefty totals, focusing in the north bay, anywhere from 4 to 8 inches with 1 to 3 inches in the east bay. the santa cruz mountains 3 to 4 inches. and 2 to 5 inches above 8,000 feet so the snow is done at lake level. 15 to 25-mile-an-hour winds gusting to 45 and the snow levels continue to climb up to near 8,000 feet. the accu-weather seven-day forecast, heavy at times throughout the morning and early afternoon hours and then we'll look for a little bit of a break. tonight heavy again overnight through midday tomorrow. could see some more flooding in some isolated spots and then looking at partly cloudy skies. chance of rain midweek far north bay and we're going to need that break. >> thank you, lisa. nick smith is live in the north bay this morning where the rain is really coming down. nick, please tell us people have slowed down. no? >> reporter: people are starting

to slow down a little bit, katie, but the pictures kind of speak for themselves. if you look over my shoulder, you can see how people are moving up and down highway 101 both northbound and southbound. you would just hope that they would take it a little bit slower. katie, i'm not sure if you can still hear me, but if you are, i just want you to take a look at highway 101 both southbound and northbound, particularly the inner lanes, which are considered lane one. if you see how much water has gathered in that area, you can see that indeed it is an area where people should exercise a bit of caution. one of the reasons we're in this area is because the north bay is expected to get most of the rain, as much as 3 to 7 inches of rain. we have had people tweeting me and sending me pictures of things that have happened in their area, so what i'm going to do is i'm going to leave this

area and actually take a ride around the bay area and find some of these rock slides and downed trees and things that we've been getting messages about. we're asking people once again if you're out there on those roadways, turn on the headlights if you have the wipers going and slow down. we don't want anyone to have any type of traffic incident. we're live in the north bay, nick smith, abc 7 news. >> yeah, nick, we need the rain but it can cause trouble as well. thank you, be careful out there. lots of snow coming down in the sierra as well. chains required on all vehicles on interstate 80 highway 50 except four-wheel drives with snow tires. all the snow, good news for skiers heading up to the sierra. lilian kim has more from sugar bowl and a look at all the new snow. >> reporter: skiers and snowboarders were wondering when the snow would come. some had even given up hope. >> we had given up. we made plans to go camping.

we got rained out. snowed out. >> reporter: that's a good thing. >> it is. so we're up here instead. >> reporter: many played hooky to take advantage of the snow while it's here. >> took the day off of work, took the kids out of school. don't tell anyone. uh-oh. >> reporter: the snow is expected to fall through the weekend dumping as much as 4 feet around lake tahoe. as a result, sugar bowl ski resort plans to open 20 more runs, from 25 to 45. locals who have been eager to work part-time have been called in. as for the snow itself, sugar bowl is perfectly happy with the sierra variety. >> we wouldn't want something really light, we want something to increase our coverage, pack down the base and get lighter after that so this is perfect. >> reporter: it is bringing its share of headaches. the chp had to deal with shinouts and accidents on interstate 80 and the issue of chains. >> it's a question of whether i can get it to stay on. it fell off a couple of times already. it's a pain. >> reporter: chain installers are eager to do the job, like

president lists initiatives already under way this year. among them are an overhaul of job training programs, creation of new retirement savings program and commitments from ceos to do more to hire the long-term unemployed. >> i want to work with congress on this agenda wherever i can. but in this year of action, whenever i can take steps without legislation to expand opportunity for more american families, i will. i've got a pen and i've got a phone. a pen to take executive action, and a phone to rally citizens and business leaders who are eager to create new jobs and new opportunities. and we've already be gun. >> meanwhile republicans say the president is overreaching by side stepping congress. state workplace safety officials are investigating the deaths of two men who were crushed while unloading slabs of granite. the accident happened yesterday morning at galaxy granite in san francisco's potrero hill area. they were preparing to unload a truck when the slabs slipped.

>> they have a process, i don't know exactly what the process is moving the big slabs like that. it seems that the slabs shifted as they were moving them out and two people were underneath them. >> the slabs were so heavy rescue crews had to break them into smaller pieces just to move them. a representative from galaxy granite says she's deeply saddened by the accident but would not comment further on what happened. cal osha says the company does not have any previous work or safety violations. the cost to build a high-speed rail line between san francisco and los angeles has dropped slightly. less than 1%. the latest estimate to get the line open by 2028 is now at $67.6 billion. by comparison, the 2012 business plan was $68.4 billion. the cost is still more than double what was originally predicted in 2008 when voters approved a bond measure to partially fund the project. city college of san francisco will now have to file a formal appeal of a commission's decision to revoke its accreditation.

you see a lot of smart drivers with their headlights on. those are the rules when you're using your windshield wipers. lisa will have more details coming up because the rain is moving around quite a bit today and through the weekend. february is national children's dental health month. to celebrate the ucsf school of dentistry will give free checkups to children. there will be free exams and fluoride treatments as well as free toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss. today's event runs from 9:00 until 4:00 at the ucsf school of dentistry. a fund-raising campaign kicks off today in silicon valley to put more salad bars in schools. it's estimated only 166 out of 10,000 schools in the region have them. david louie visits a school where kids are making healthy eating choices. >> reporter: right in the center of the cafeteria at baker elementary is a salad bar. it may be sized for kids, but

the selection of fruits and vegetables is as varied as what you'd find in a restaurant. as part of the lunch program here, the youngsters must choose two items. >> sometimes healthy stuff is like yummy, but sometimes it's like just gross. >> reporter: tiffany can skip what she doesn't like because she has so many other choices. she's having corn and fruit salad to go with our nachos. it's estimated fewer than half of the schools in silicon valley have salad bars. a state initiative to promote healthy eating has prompted nonprofit groups, labor unions and business to raise the money to install 100 new salad bars over the next three years. >> well, if we just ate of the main foods an we wouldn't have a lot of vitamins and stuff so you could be like stronger and grow better. >> and you want to be really tall when you grow up, right? >> yeah. >> reporter: however, kids can be, well, kids. >> i don't like broccoli or brussel sprouts. >> so do they serve them here at

school? >> yeah. >> and what happens when they're there? >> i just get other stuff. >> reporter: sometimes the kids discover new foods they have never tried before, such as kale, and jicama. >> we had one parent who was surprised their child ate jicama. >> reporter: and tiffany discovered she likes tomatos, they have not gross. it's really heart warming to see that young kids can make healthy eating choices and the goal is to get this spread throughout silicon valley. the silicon valley leadership group is sponsoring an adult and kids fun run this morning. it gets under way in less than 15 minutes now at 9:00 a.m. at san jose's hellier county park. proceeds will help raise money for the salad bars, so that is awesome. good luck to all the runners this morning. i would say stay dry but that's not a possibility.

>> yeah, that's right, katie. in fact you're looking at a live shot of emeryville where we've got the risks up today which is an urban and small stream flood advisory for marin and sonoma county until 10:45. it's been extended up to sonoma. some of the creeks and poor drainage areas are looking at some flooding. here's a look. the rain is mainly a northern california event and we focus in even closer and it's been a north bay event from hailsburg down through santa rosa. these are the areas in the flood risk for 10:45. we're looking at guerneville through bodega bay. notice all the green through concord, walnut creek and orinda. finally you're getting rain back on the peninsula. san francisco light rain, gusty winds and the rain extends over into hayward, 580 and livermore picking up some rain now. you've been dry in the early morning hours. san jose, a little bit of a break but down towards morgan hill and gilroy, looking at

light, spotty rain. the coastal hills have been looking at heavier rain. here is the rain in the sierra nevada. unfortunately, the snow stacked up yesterday and what we have now is 38 degrees. raining at lake level and we will see more accumulating snow, but really not anywhere near lake level and above 7,000 feet. so anywhere from about a tenth of an inch to 0.2 in redwood city. you see a third at the airport, over 2 inches ben lomond but look at the north bay. 5 inches mt. tam and we're looking at more rain continuing right on through the day for the north bay. so our exploratory yum camera trying to keep it dry. low to mid-50s with breezy winds all around the bay. we've heard with the delays at sfo and temperatures are pretty mild. 57 in livermore. so the forecast highlights today, rainy and breezy. a little bit of a let-up, not until the overnight hours. so it will be rainy all day long

and breezy. then the second wave of energy is really going to come through with heavier rain tomorrow. if you look at the pacific satellite, you notice that there's a warm frontal band over us. once we get the cold sector of the system in here we'll see the rain pick up in the south bay and the east bay. so the heaviest rain through cloverdale down through southern marin county into the east bay. 3:00 it's light rain for everyone. and then by about 9:00, 10:00, more heavy rain over the bay area. focusing on the north bay. also in the east bay rain should pick up as well. about this time tomorrow we're looking at more rain and it's not until late in the day after about 1:00 when things begin to settle down and we'll see the rain become more widely scattered. monday we'll be back to partly cloudy skies and the heaviest amounts still the coastal hills and up in the north bay 4 to 8 inches. ben lomond is over 2 inches and

1 to 2.5 to 3 inches in parts of the east bay. we talked about additional snow in the sierra. it's going to be above 8,000 feet, 2 to 5 inches. southwest winds gusting to 45 miles an hour. look at those high snow levels, 7500 to 8,000 feet. so with this warm sector of the storm we're in the upper 50s to near 60. very breezy winds. periods of moderate to heavy rain throughout the day today. just a little bit of a break through the overnight hours and then more rain for you in the south bay and east bay tomorrow as well as the rest of the bay area. we could run into more flooding before the weekend is out and then partly cloudy monday and tuesday. the next risk of rain comes our way midweek. once again focused in the north bay. so we'll be watching it for you since we haven't seen any rain in such a long time, it should be just nuisance flooding. we're not looking at any property damage or rivers going over their banks but it's coming down in a pretty good clip in a short amount of time.
