big congratulations. >> and sage kotsenburg yesterday and her day this morning. so much emotion captured at these games. take a look at this. the possible thrill of victory seen on the face of ashley wagner after a good performance in saturday's team figure skating. and then, just moments later, the agony of defeat when her fourth place score of 63.10 was announced. her team did advance in the event. that is good news. >> she did not hide it. >> norway is in front, u.s., canada and the netherlands three apiece. norway, the country to catch this morning. >> i have faith. so much to tell you about. our "gma" olympic headquarters in sochi, russia. amy robach is there tracking it all. hey, amy. >> hi, good morning, dan. it is a busy day in sochi with cross-country skiing, speedskating, the biathlon and figure skating. just some of the events on tap but it's also a day to celebrate our victories.

sage kotsenburg wowed the audience and delivered gold for team usa with his signature move. kotsenburg calls it the holy crail. rotating 3 1/2 times while holding the board behind his back while soaring over the treacherous new slopestyle course. >> he made a calculated risk, a strategic move and it worked. this is what the olympics are about. >> honestly, it feels like a dream right now. just winning a gold on the first day, and the first event of slopestyle in the olympics. it's seriously the craziest thing ever. >> reporter: and women's ice hockey also kicked off with the american ladies shutting down finland, 3-1. but the day belonged to the figure skaters. ashley wagner, the 22-year-old star, dazzling spectators, as she nailed some of the most difficult moves and propelling the u.s. team to third place in

team competition. wagner called this her redemption skate after a devastating performance one month ago. >> ashley wagner answered all her critics. she went out. she skated solidly. >> reporter: but it was this face that wagner made with the reveals that set social media ablaze. reminding us of another olympian not impressed. and the american team in medal contention. and for the second day in a row, breaking gold medal news, jaime anderson, giving team usa a sweep of gold medals in snowboard slope style. by winning the women's competition. her fellow gold medalist tweeting, just jumped out of my chair. landed that run, #spoici. if you want to know what that means. like i was, we looked it up. it's an exclamation of gratitude towards life. and a disappointing day for bode miller. who had hopes of medaling in the downhill event. the five time olympic medalist

finished eighth out of 22. but miller will have chances to medal in the super g and the super combined. and team figure skating continues, the u.s. in medal contention. how exciting is that? first time olympian gracie gold will take the ice, and final competitions in the team category wrapping tonight, we will see if team usa can take the gold, silver or bronze. we'll take any of the three. enter we showed this picture of johnny quinn's bathroom door. we caught up with him this morning. >> once i got out of there. once i put a towel on, i looked back at the door and said, oh, man, there's a giant hole. i went down and contacted the usoc and followed the protocol. the russians have been phenomenal. they came in that evening, got us a new door. >> he got a new door, but he didn't have a towel. i think you guys heard that. wow. i love he told us this, i figured i'd get retweets, but he had no idea that would be the picture that people would

remember probably most out of this week in the olympics. funny stuff there. he's such a good boy scout. he told everybody what he did right away. made sure he is didn't get in trouble. >> i'm sure he's full of spoice this morning. now that he is safely out of the bathroom. >> yeah, i'm going to use that term for the rest of the day. >> thank you. >> these are the most tightly secured olympics ever. vladimir putin promising the games will be safe. and he has a lot riding on this promise. >> and we're we have martha raddatz. in for george stephanopoulos this week. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> things are going smoothly, from a security aspect thus far. what does that tell us? >> it tells us absolutely nothing. i think probably the most frightening thing is to let down your guard. we're so excited about the olympics and the wonderful opening ceremonies, but you have to remember the security. and that's what u.s. officials are keeping their eye on. they want to keep up to date on intelligence. they want to know the latest they can hear and there are still those threats out there.

>> if god forbid something happens, is the u.s. prepared to respond. we have two navy warships in the black sea, which is unprecedented to occur in olympic games. but are they ready to do something? >> i look at the ships, each has one helicopter aboard. i don't think those ships can do very much about evacuating americans. there might be other kind of planning but the ships really are for show. >> a deterrent if anything. >> which means we need to hope that vladimir putin's vaunted ring of steel works. >> yes, we do. >> martha, thank you. martha has a big show. she and abc's jon karl will talk about it on "this week." later this morning on abc. thanks again. let's get to the other stop stories. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with a major victory for same-sex couples. attorney general eric holder saying married gay couples have the right to refuse to testify against their spouses in federal court and eligible to file joint

bankruptcy and have the same prison visitation as heterosexual couples. these rights will apply to same-sex couples even in states that do not recognize their marriages. and the fbi is investigating a possible bomb threat at orlando international airport. on saturday, a jet blue cleaning crew found a letter inside an aircraft indicates that a bomb was on the plane that was able to be boarded. part of the terminal was evacuated when the plane was searched. nothing suspicious was found, but the passengers were put on another flight. and a huge meat recall out of california. the rancho meat processing plant is recalling 8.7 million pounds of beef products. federal inspectors say a year's worth of meat may be contaminated. they say the process diseased and unsound animals about the benefit of federal inspection. there have been no reports of illnesses from eating any of that meat. and a night in chicago takes a frightening turn.

watch as the ceiling of the concord music hall comes crashing down on partygoers in the middle of a concert there. the panel gave away with debris scattering among the crowd. several people suffered minor injuries. the cause of the chance is being investigated. but one witness said the music had so much bass in it that it was shaking the ceiling before it came down. and massive plumes the black smoke filled the sky above savannah, georgia. as a tire warehouse goes up in flames. officials say that more than 5,000 tons of rubber caught fire. and spread quickly. right now, local authorities say the fire is contained, but it will take a while for that to burn out. and it appears that it is game over for the flappy bird app, currently the most popular free mobile app on the app store and google's play store. on saturday, the developer said, in a tweet, i'm sorry. flappy bird users, 22 hours from

now, i will take flappy bird down. i cannot take this anymore. not sure what that means. the app is scheduled to be off the market some time later today. who needs a burglar alarm when you have this? remember those -- you do remember those? the slightly annoying mounted fish called the singing billy bass? you have one of those? check this out. one store owner in minnesota is crediting it with deterring a would be thief. tom allen said the last thing he did when he closed up the shop was turn on the fish. when he came back the next day, the front door was kicked in, but nothing was stolen. allen and the police say it appears that the crook was scared away when the single fish started, well, singing, triggered by the motion detector inside. so -- >> pretty safe. >> yeah. >> doesn't take much. >> easily annoyed and scared off. but pretty low tech. >> he saw the sign. >> the fish! >> there's nothing worth stealing in here. >> there you go. >> thank you, ron. now to a wild scene on a college basketball court. a player and a fan getting into

it. this is not the first time that oklahoma state's marcus stewart has showed his temper. but was he really at fault here? michelle franzen is on the story. good morning. >> reporter: the promising oklahoma state star took a pass playing professional basketball and now his welcoming return to the courts now tarnished by an altercation with fan in the stands. in the final moments against texas tech, adrenaline turned into altercation between marcus smart and a fan in the stands. an out of bounds move that marred the game and could land the oklahoma state star in the hot seat. >> that's disgusting behavior. >> reporter: start was trying to block a shot with just seconds on the clock when he landed in the crowd. officials say it appears words were exchanged before he was shoving the fan. smart received a technical foul and now his coach and big 12

conference commissioner will be reviewing the tape to see what if any other disciplinary action should be taken. smart, considered one of the top drafts for the nba last year decided to stay on the college courts for his sophomore year. the scene is eerily reminiscent in the malice in the palace when a brawl broke out between players and fans after fan threw a cup at indianapolis pacer player ron artest, now known as metta world peace. however, this may not be such a cut and dry case. witnesses to the altercation as well as marcus smart himself, claim that jeff orr was yelling racial slurs at the player. the incident is under review. this young athlete's public perception and possible professional basketball future in jeopardy by this unfortunate move. what's next? the big 12 conference says it hasn't had an incident like this before involving a player and a fan.

the commissioner is set to review the incident along with the conference's rules from sportsmanship. dan, bianna? >> thank you. now to a high-end fashion company getting high heat for a mess up. designer to the stars valentino under fire this morning for touting that a hollywood star was carrying one of their expensive handbags into the wake of philip mara is here with the story. >> good morning, everyone. for designers having a celebrity customer is the ultimate in free advertising. but valentino is facing a major backlash for what many are calling extremely insensitive self-promotion. this morning, fashion powerhouse valentino is in hot water after using academy award nominated actress amy adams to promote its product. in a press release, she is excited to claim the bag she is carrying as one of its own. saying, quote, we are pleased to

announce amy adams carrying the valentino garavany rockstone double bag from the spring 2014 collection. one problem, that picture of a somber adams was taken at thursday's wake for fallen star philip seymour hoffman. a close friend and co-star of amy adams, peering together in "the master" and "doubt." >> have i passed the time? >> not at all. >> in the statement released by her representative, adams denied being a valentino spokesperson and called it appalling. >> valentino was trying to get the it factor by associating the hot new bag with a hot young actress. but what they ended up with was really the ick factor. >> reporter: the label says it will not terminate the person behind the press release, be did apologize for the fashion faux pas, saying it's unaware of the circumstances, it was a mistake. adams, nominated for an oscar for her role in "american

iconic teen heart throb of old hollywood, and more than a half century after his death, actor james dean is making headlines. @jamesdean has 8,000 followers and sent out 2200 tweets. but not so fast. it's actually a fan who is running the site. and that is not sitting well with some of dean's heirs. >> there's not an official twitter site because it's misappropriated. by an individual. >> reporter: the company that runs dean's estate is seeing twitter, claiming @jamesdean isn't trademarked but they refuse to shut down the handle. >> they're fighting it, because they don't to want open the door to lots of claims of people saying, hey, this was a dead celebrity that needs protection and you're stealing our brand. >> reporter: and it's not the first time there's been confusion over twitter handling with famous brands. for instance, @heinz is a journalism professor with the same name as the ketchup manufacturer. abc news tried reaching out to

to you. and bianna, those guys are so popular that they claim they're the favorite team here in sochi. and i got to experience a little of that last night, hanging out with them up in the mountains. everybody stopped them to take a picture. what's not to love. two gentle giants who practice for a sport on ice in the sand. >> it's bobsled time! >> reporter: bobsled time indeed. the two man jamaican bobsled team back for the first winter olympics since 2002. >> we are approaching this as the underdog and we're hungry. >> reporter: jaymaica's bobsled team famously broke the ice at the 1998 winter olympics in calgary. their improbable story inspiring the movie cool runnings. >> say hello to the first jamaican bobsled team. >> reporter: an instant under dog given the country's tropical setting, they have been training hard in rather soft conditions.

but the jamaicans' road to sochi wasn't all sand between their toes. they were broke, unable to cover equipment and travel costs, and captain winston is one of the oldest athletes in the game. 25, 30 years old? how old are you? 47 years old. and once the jamaicans got here, well, their equipment didn't, causing the team to miss a precious day of practice. >> we're going to show them that there's nothing they put in front of us that is going to bar us from getting what we deserve. >> reporter: reunited with luggage, they stand handed off at the opening ceremonies. bobsledding is no joke. i learned that firsthand from the u.s. olympic coach. the two-man bobsled doesn't start until next sunday -- so i did my part, helping the guy known as megawatt keep the competitive edge. they qualified for the olympics being the top 30 team in the

world. in 2002, they came in 28th in the olympics. now, i post megawatt for a prediction here, he didn't say. but he says he feels more fit now than he did in the previous olympics. >> love that you jump in the bobsled. you had the classic tv guy reaction, not the face. >> duck and cover. >> and by the way, matt, if the tv thing doesn't work out, you have skills. 2018 may be the year for you in bobsledding. >> reporter: but if you can't see, you can't steer. i don't know. >> that's true. >> well-said. good defense. well-played, matt, we appreciate it. thank you for your reporting. back here at home, important to check the weather. we welcome back julie durda. from our abc station in miami, wplg channel 10. good morning. >> good morning. and hello, we are waking up to a big change over the west. we have been talking about the major winter storm. i want to take you to video we captured over portions of

california. right now, we are dealing with rain still occurring. but this is the video they captured yesterday in san francisco. i want to show you what occurred in sonoma county. now this area has been so dry for so long, that any rain will cause these issues. a big mud slide, and flooding was a big concern. it was a mess across the pacific northwest and northern california. again, the rain they received was not enough to get them out of that drought. but they are expecting more rain today. it's a fast-moving storm through the afternoon and into tomorrow. most of the rain around reading, sacramento, just north of san francisco. almost about 12 inches have fallen over portions of california. now as we go to the southeast, another storm, a major winter storm we are keeping our eyes on. could see any where between 1 to 3 inches of snow and ice. a big concern from mississippi up to the carolinas. we are expecting the snow to develop later on today into tomorrow.

justin, as in justin bieber. the first lady doling out mothering advice to a singer who has had, as we know, more than a few brushes with the law of late. but first the murder trial making headlines as loud as the music at the center of it. >> a man in florida says all he did was ask a group of teenagers to turn down the volume but he was forced to defend himself by pulling out a gun and opened fire. there was a rare saturday court session, and abc news's linzey janis has the latest. good morning. >> good morning. it all started 16 months ago on black friday when the defendant michael dunn parked outside of a gas station next to a suv full of teens playing loud music. he asked them to turn down the volume, they did, but when they turned it back up, one is dead. ♪ according to prosecutors, 17-year-old jordan davis seen in in exclusive youtube video was unarmed when he was murdered by

47-year-old mike lg dunn for playing loud music. a detective testifying he found in weapons in the parked suv where zbaifs three of his friends sat outside a jacksonville gas station. >> you see any evidence in any of these locations of weapons? >> no, i did not. >> reporter: lawyers for dunn say he was defending himself after he herd threats and saw a gun inside the suv. in an emotional testimony, dunn's fiancee inside the gas station when the shots rang out -- >> somebody's shooting. >> reporter: describing that fateful night. >> what did the defendant say? >> i hate that music. >> reporter: on friday, davis' friends answering questions too. >> isn't true the music was so loud that the windows and mirrors were vibrating. in that suv? >> yes, sir. >> reporter: tevin thompson testifying when dunn parked next to them and asked them to turn down the music, they did.

but davis wanted it turned back up. >> what did jordan davis say? >> turn the [ bleep ] music back up. >> to you or someone else? >> to me. >> reporter: a minute later, prosecutors say dunn pulled out a gun and started firing nine rounds. then the boys realizing their friend was shot. >> was he making any shots you could hear? >> yes, sir. >> what was that? >> gasping for air. >> reporter: in the courtroom, davis' parents wiping away tears, reliving their nightmare. dunn has been charged with first degree murder and faces three counts of attempted first degree murder for shooting at the three others in the vehicle. dan and bianna, this case is compared to the trayon martin case. it also happens to be the same prosecutor but i spoke to abc's legal affairs anchor, dan abrams. he said there is a difference here. there is no question there was an altercation. it may be hard to prove self-defense. >> and in the same state as well. thank you. let's get an update of the other headlines. ron, over to you. >> hi, again. sorry to interrupt you. actually somebody tweeted me about that. why do you interrupt dan and bianna. i apologize.

>> we haven't noticed. we love you nonetheless. >> somebody is. a spoiler alert for those of you following the olympics. that alert is over. the u.s. shining in sochi. don't pay attention if you don't want to know what happened. jaime anderson wins olympic gold in women's snowboard slopestyle. the second gold for the u.s. team. meanwhile in the men's downhill, bode miller finished outside of the medal count. and in turkey, riot police fired water cannons and tear gas at hundreds of demonstrators. protestors marched to the main square angry over the government's control over the internet. and former chicago mayor richard bailey. left the hospital after a week of tests to see why he felt sick and disoriented in a business trip. chicago's longest serving mayor has not released details about the hospital stay or illness. and "sportscenter," number one play of the day.
