damage is done. clean up efforts are underway after the bay area got a lot of rain at once. a live look outside from our richmond san rafael bridge camera. the roads are slick still. it could be a problem for tomorrow's commute in the morning. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm ama dates. we have live team coverage of the damage the storm left behind. first we will go to the broadcast center and leigh glaser with a look at live doppler 7hd. >> yes, it looks like the storm system has moved on toward the east. in fact, the north bay took the brunt of this storm. it is definitely starting to dry out this evening. you can see on live doppler 7hd and we will take you to

some locations that are still reporting a little light rain near cloverdale and over toward the lakeville area and also in the east bay, oakland is reporting a little light mist and drizzle. walnut creek and san ramon and even toward sunnyvale they were reporting heavy mist and drizzle. in santa cruz it is all over there as well. once the storm decided to move it moved quickly and that's exactly what happened. boy, the three-day totals, these are preliminary ones. you can see the trajectory in the north bay over six inches in santa rosa and over 11 inches at mount saint helena a and close to an inch at sfo airport. lesser for livermore and san jose. was it enough to put a debt in our percent of normal? well not too much. only 40% of normal for santa rosa and 37% of normal for san francisco.

san jose still very low at 28% of normal. i do want to mention that santa rosa this time last year was at 102% of normal. we have more rain in our forecast coming up this week. we'll look at that in a bit. >> thank you, leigh. >> one part of the bay area that has seen the most severe flooding and damage has been mill valley. that's where abc7 news reporter john alston is live for us tonight. john? >> behind me is old mill creek that runs through downtown mill valley. a few days ago if you wantedded to cross here you would barely -- if you wanted to cross here it would barely get your shoes wet. if you dared cross here you would be swept away. the rain was welcome, but not the anxiety of living so close to a raging creek. he has an office next to the water. >> i came around 11:30, 12:00. i saw the water raging. >> so he put sandbags in front of all of his doors and raised his computer equipment a few

inches off the floor just in case. >> scary when you think of how much computer equipment you can lose. >> tonight the plastic sheets cover the hillside in mill valley to prevent anymore erosion. earlier in the day a mountain of earth came tumbling down toward this mass 7 home, but stopped short of doing any damage. sunday was clean up day on miller avenue. the bar didn't get a chance to live up to its name closing an hour early after water backed up inside the building overnight. the combination of heavy rain and high tide. >> all of our floor drains and toilets and other drains were taking water on. we were filling up from the inside out versus taking water on from the outside in. >> the bar was back open as the water started to recede. abc7 news. >> the rain was so bad in marin county people were forced to evacuate. rock slides and mudslides

closed the state park. an employee said it was a mess. >> it has been pretty scary. there were a lot of slides and trails had a lot of blowouts on the trails. there has been flooding in certain areas. so for public safety sake we were trying to evacuate some of the park. >> at the lower elevations you can see streets were flooded. lilian kim is live tonight in shellville. part of a busy highway has been closed for the past day lilian, there is still no word when it will re-open to traffic. >> reporter: that's right, ama. the heavy rain stopped hours ago, but this area is still flooded. we are on highway 121 and the water here is receding very slowly. this is the result of days of steady rain forcing cal trans to close this intersection where highways 12 and 121 meet just south of sonoma. a few contemplated whether

they could make it across. the driver of the tesla thought about it for a minute or two and ultimately turned around. that wasn't the case earlier in windsor where unrelenting rain caused flash flooding. throughout the day one car after the next drove through the flooded roads. >> it is a rush. >> others avoided the risk altogether. he chose to ride his bike instead. >> the roads are pretty bad in sonoma county. if you are driving on them through water you can't see the potholes and you will probably stall out. >> in addition to the flooded streets the storm toppled trees. the oak stood tall before it scam crashing down -- it came crashing down damaging a car and a fence. as for highway 121 there is no official word when it will re-open. but i spoke to a cal trans worker and he thinks it will be cleared overnight. live in shellville, lilian

kim, abc7 news. >> thank you, lilian. new at 11:00, heavy flooding has closed woods and parks. this was the pellican inn. visitors looking to visit those locations should check to see if they are open beforehand. floodwaters covered parts of here is how it looked at the elementary school. it didn't cause too many headaches for drivers. investigators in the north bay are looking into whether the storm was a factor after a driver was found dead in the backyard of a mill valley home after he crashed his car nearby. sergio has new details on what happened. >> reporter: emergency crews found the body in the back of one of these homes. he was spotted after the

rescue teams were called in. the neighborhood is built into the side of the valley and the streets and hills were slick from the storm. this whole search started when somebody spotted an overturned suv down a hill just before 10:00 a.m. >> there is no one inside the vehicle at the time of the officers responding. we tried to determine if the person was able to get out of the vehicle and how many people were in the vehicle. >> reporter: the scene of the crash is several yards up the hill from these homes where the body was found. police say the so -- the suv went down this gully and they had to use a large wrecker to pull it out. the neighborhood was locked down for hours as the search and search-and-rescue teams prompted concern for residents. >> we are all making sure everybody is okay. >> reporter: police will not release the identity of the man, but they say he lives nearby. >> does the person live in that neighborhood? >> they come back to a resident in the area, but we can't confirm the location at this time. >> reporter: the coroner's office will determine how the

man died. abc7 news. >> a weekend of rain caused minor flooding. cars splashed their way through large puddles. you can also see the storm's impact with more water flowing through walnut creek. rising creeks and canals can be hazardous. they suggest staying away from the fast-moving water because it can be deadly. on san francisco's folsom street many are using sandbags to keep back the water. there were several deep pools of water along the street. the rain didn't stop anyone from shopping. union scare -- union square was helping those get away from the rain. and there was an area very dry a short time ago. the assignment manager also provided video of the large tree which fell on loloma avenue. berkeley firefighters say the tree was about 75 feet tall of the pg&e responded because the

tree was leaning on power lines. >> power was knocked out to hundreds of pg&e customers. right now 49 customers on the peninsula are without power and 275 in the north bay and nearly 450 in the east bay. the south bay reports 38 customers in the dark while there are just five outages in san francisco. pg&e say most are related to underground failures. part of the western span of the bay bridge was also without power for a couple of hours this evening. the lights between treasure island and a tower on the san francisco side were out. the outage de -- depart ied the bridge. the lights came back on at 9:45. today's storm forced many travelers to change their plans at san francisco international airport. you they say more than 120 arriving and departing flights were canceled. more than 300 others were delayed.

the greater financial assistance you will receive. enroll today at coveredca.com. hayward. that's where police believe a man was shot and killed by his intended victim. it happened on western boulevard near grove way this evening. detectives suspect a woman took part in that home invasion. she suffered multiple gunshot wounds. someone dropped her off at a local emergency room. it remains unclear if the residents of the home will face any criminal charges. he is being questioned by police. tomorrow san francisco city leaders including mayor ed lee will announce a bill that will secure the financial future of the city college of san francisco.

aside from the accreditation problems, the college has major money issues. an analysis showed huge problems with the bloated pay role department and the inability of finance administrators to make tough fiscal decisions. mark leno is also backing the bill. the new span of the bay bridge has experienced cracked steel rods and wells. tonight there is a new problem, it leaks. the cal trans crews spent the day searching for the leaks. the rainwater is filtering into the structure on the suspension span of the bridge. cal trans says this was anticipated which is why openings were drilled. >> enough water does collect, then that water will then find its way via gravity to weep holes. the water will then run down through the weep holes to a master weep hole in the base of the deck sections and then it will drop out that way. but we are not even seeing that amount of water. >> bridge officials say the amount of water in the bridge right now doesn't meed to be

plume just raced through the bay area. still picking up moisture from cloverdale north to the 101 and ukiah and that is moving over toward the clear lake area. hayward on 580 all the way out toward livermore is picking up a few light showers. some of these will continue to rotate from time to time. in fact, here is a good example. you can see a wave of moisture and sunnyvale and cupertino and even into san jose, you will start to see the residual shower activity as well in the next 15 to 20 minutes. what we will have to deal with once the moisture moves out is the low clouds and the pockets of dense fog. you can see from our exploratorium camera and looking toward the bridge there is a low ceiling there. you will see san jose in the upper 50s and you can see the wet pavement. still a lot of mist and drizzle flying around the bay area. napa 56 and 58 for livermore.

and here is a look at our forecast. we took you into the workweek and we will look for a few showers overnight. maybe just the heavy mist and drizzle. pockets of dense fog tomorrow morning. clearing tomorrow afternoon. get ready for dryer and warmer weather conditions for at least the next couple days. there was that last wave of moisture just pushing south. you can see the clearing that has already taken place. the moisture headed into southern california right now. let's take you through the time period and our forecast. it is 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 in the morning. you will notice that we still have the clouds and the mist and drizzle. we will see a little for the 5:00 a.m. commute. but really it is going to be the fog tomorrow morning and then by around midday, the brighter skies and the clouds part and we should break out into afternoon sunshine. as ama was mentioning, the most that has fallen is in the form of rain because we have had such high snow levels.

blue canyon over five inches of rain this weekend. winter weather advisory is posted through 4:00 tomorrow morning. maybe an additional four inches at lake level. the 6500 foot level. it will be gusty with southwest winds up to 30 miles per hour. our high for monday, we wake up with clouds and mist and drizzle. and then we end with plenty of sunshine. inland locations, livermore, oakley, antioch is in the mid to low 60s by tomorrow afternoon. tuesday is a dry day as well as wednesday for much of the bay area. the temperatures begin to warm. we may see a chance developing wednesday and thursday in the north bay. you will be on the rain line once again and it looks like the next chance for the bay area will be saturday night and maybe sunday. we will keep you posted on that. i'm meteorologist leigh glaser. back to you. >> thank you, leigh.

i'm ama dates. in tonight's headlines, the rain appears to have triggered the mudslide. the debris did not enter the home and nobody was hurt. sonoma county drivers will have to wait until floodwaters recede until they can drive through the junction of highways 12 and 121. this weekend's rain flooded the shellville area south of downtown sonoma. mud and rockslides forced rangers to evacuate the state

park. the wet weather made many roads and trails in the park hazardous to visitors. still many unanswered questions in the valley after a man's body was found near an overturned suv. the vehicle went off the road and landed in a steep, rugged area. the car is registered to a nearby resident. the coroner will decide how he died. days and days of rain means some rivers are on the verge of flooding. the rising water levels made some residents and business owners nervous in downtown truckee. but many others haven't started filling sandbags yet. they would like to see more snow after a lack of snow and the skiers that follow it have cost many merchants big bucks. it might take awhile before many can get around portland, oregon. several inches of ice and snow cover the city. the freezing rain added to the mess after most of the snow

fell yesterday. temperatures will rise to the 40s. forecasters predict it can melt by tuesday or wednesday. drivers needed a boost over the snow-covered streets of seattle. and the snow can cause big problems because like san francisco it is a city built on top of many steep hills. tragedy on the highways in two u.s. cities today including one in southern california. 11 people killed. accidents caused by drivers who drove the wrong way on the highway. one of those crashes was caught on camera. abc news reporter shows us what happened. >> what is he doing? >> a driver in such disbelief. she pulls out her cell phone to record an suv swerving through on coming traffic this morning on interstate 275 near tampa, florida. in a few more seconds it ends

horrifically. the wrong way driver dying after slamming head on into a carve college kids -- a car of college kids. four fraternity brothers also killed instantly. less than three hours later a driver went past these warning signs on to the pomona freeway. three vehicles mangled. six are dead. a wreck so bad investigators still don't know which vehicles most of the victims were riding in. >> our hearts go out to the families. >> wrong way driving causes 3% of the freeway crashes, but they are deadly. up to 27 times more likely to be fatal and killing more than 360 people each year. those wrong way signs are often missed when drivers are too impaired to even notice them. >> the driver who caused the crash in diamond bar faces criminal charges for driving under the influence and causing the crash. new at 11:00 -- new at 11:00, plug in

hybrid owners who want to drive 8 loan in the carpool lane need to act quickly. the stickers allocated to plug in hybrids like the volt, cmax and prius are gone. the california dmv expects all of them to be taken in months. the stickers enable drivers to use carpool lanes regardless of how many people are riding in the car. there is interest mall shock and outrage following a decision made by the copenhagen zoo to kill a 2-year-old giraffe and feed its remains to lions. all of it was done as zoo visitors watched. a healthy male giraffe was put down by zoo officials earlier using a bolt pistol. that's him on the left. officials skinned his remains and fed them to the lion residents. the zoo says it was done to prevent inbreeding and turned down offers from other zoos and private individuals to save the animal. more than 20,000 people signed an on-line petition urging the zoo not to kill the giraffe,

she says a few years ago saint rose doctors saved her life after she almost died in a fire. >> very grateful they were there and so close to where i live. >> the nonprofit hospital sees thousands of emergency room patients a year. with kaiser hayward closing saint rose will be the only facility receiving 9-1-1 patients in the bay area's fifth largest city. now saint rose will have to shutdown. >> it would be tragic for myself and the neighborhood. >> saint rose is no longer existing. that means lives are at stake because ambulance has to travel a little further away to another facility. he says as a safety net hospital saint rosies large numbers of uninsured and under insured patients. the fees those patients can't pay have been subsidized by federal and state programs such as medicare and medical. the affordable care act will reduce medicare subsidees by $22 billion over the next five

years. the idea is more people will be insured and able to afford health care. but he points out his hospital still needs that money because saint rose serves a poor community. many of whom might not sign up for insurance. >> we will receive $3.6 million less in reimbursement for the next 12 months. >> add that to the $10,000 deficit saint rose racks up every day in part because medical doesn't cover all costs. >> we are reimbursed 13 cents on the dollar. >> they are doing what is good for them without realizing how much they are hurting the hospitals. >> the health care industry says they will hurt more because saint rose is not affiliated with a larger group such as kaiser or so tter or even county. >> they are not part of the system. they don't have the purchasing power. >> we tried to talk to state and federal officials about the unintended codges --

consequences. possibly shutting them down without problems. but to either pass this to someone else or declined to be interviewed. >> the department of health care services sent an e-mail that reads in part "we value the services provided by our partners like saint rose and we are committed to ensure access for services for our medicare members. alameda county is another one. >> you have to do more. >> the director of alameda county health care services points out taxpayers are to the tune of $40 million. an amount he says was appropriate because of the important role saint rose plays in the county. >> they face the challenge of not only getting enough money, but serving a community that is increasing multi generational poverty. >> in a letter, saint rose is asking for $18.3 million each year to help cover the 3.6

million in reimbursement cuts and other funding needs. they say 18.3 million is not realistic. >> i think an augmentation between 4 million and 6 million is the right support. >> the supervisors are fair individuals and i am certain they will do everything in their power to help saint rose hospital. >> they hope it comes soon and saint rose doesn't have to close. >> they saved my life. i might want them to do it again. >> for the i-team, dan noyes, abc7 news. >> the health care reform reductions are not one-time cuts. each yore hospitals will get -- each year hospitals will get fewer federal and state dollars. something needs to be worked out if saint rose can survive. and now more on the weather so people know what to expect when they are heading out tomorrow morning. >> hopefully some will see dry pavement. we have a heavy mist and

michael alan will win his 6th champions tour title. missouri all-american defensive lineman told espn today that he is gay. sam was the associated press sec defensive player of the year leading the league with 11 and a half sacks and 19 tackles for a loss. he told his coaches and teammates in august and they supported him 100%. he decided to come out after playing in the senior bowl where every nfl team had representatives. he will become the first openly gay nfl draft prospect. he said he is proud of michael. he is a great example of how important it is to be respectful of others. the nfl put out a statement saying they admire his honesty and courage and any player with determination can succeed in the nfl. michael feels like the first step is letting everyone know he is comfortable in his own skin. >> i am not afraid of who i am. i am not afraid to tell the world who i am. i am michael sam. i am a college graduate. i am african-american and i am gay. if i can -- if i work hard.
