live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. breaking news, this alaskan airlines jet had to turn back for an emergency landing after departing from mineta international airport. that is small smoke but condensation. it was on the way to honolulu and in the air an hour when the pilot said there were circuit problems with a power failure in one of the six backup navigation systems and said he could have flown to hawaii but decided to turn around. emergency cruise were ready.

>> the jet touched down safely. it taxied to a gate under its own power with 140 passengers and crew and headed out on another flight soon. thanks for joining it. >> our other top story a major clean up in mill valley this morning where the storms caused lots of flooding and damage. amy hollyfield is at mount tamalpais high school with the latest. >> the rain has stopped. there is stillwater here. look at this puddle behind me on miller avenue across from the high school here in mill water. we have seen lots of mill water residents dodging puddles line this and doing a lot of clean up. the owner of the 2 a.m. valley shut down 1 a.m. sunday morning one the bar was filling with water. >> people were wading through several inches of water to get a drink but at a certain point we said "enough is enough." we closed. >> he took pictures of the

understooded business and the water forced him to shut down sunday until about 6:00 p.m. which cost him dearly in sales. he felt worse for the neighbor, gentleman's taco. again, it took it harder and had to close business for the entire day which was several thousand dollars for them. >> a work crew tried to unclog a storm drain after witnessing all the problems. >> it is harsh. i was here in mill valley and it was flooded. >> the parking lot at mama's cafe flooded but the owner fed people their sunday breakfast. >> this flooded with water but people could still walk through it. i tried to snake it myself. >> the creek is moving now in mill valley. they got so high during the storm that some were hoping they would not spill over the banks. they didn't. overall, people celebrated the good soaking. >> we needed it. i'm glad we had it. i'm glad we didn't flood. >> those who did flood say they have seen this before and are wondering when the city is doing

to address the problem. >> it is a skipping record of sorts. the city has been aware of what has been going on for many years now and i don't if it is politics or dollars but they have not rectified the problem. >> i called the public works department and the mayor's office and have not reached anyone or gotten a call back to ask questions about long-term solution. san mateo county, crews are working to remove a tree that came down across high 35 and 84 at woodside and fell over all lanes at alice's restaurant and brought down cable wires with the road re-opening by 3:00 this afternoon. >> low clouds are leading to delays for folks flying into san francisco this morning, according to flight aware, inbound flights are delayed an hour. only land and san jose are not reporting any delays right now. >> how much rain did the weekend

soaker bring? all weekend. >> well that is "the" neighborhood to be. >> john zero up north with 12" the bigger spots. you look at the totals for the last three days you can see eight inches in santa rosa and napa and three and a quarter in fairfield and 3" in san francisco and more than 2" in downtown oakland and it tapers.5" in concord and only an inch at sfo and nearly 1" in redwood city and rain fading into the valleys, the santa clara valley and livermore. this was our rainfall deficit last wednesday. we had a good soaking on thursday. now look at our deficit. it is still very high in many areas, still almost 14" in santa rosa to 6" around san jose, livermore, and most feed and we need a couple more of those

events without the flooding to get back to average. i will let you know we have a couple more chances in our seven-day forecast. >> thank you. we know the storm has helped the sierra snow pack. two weeks ago the snow pack was only 12 percent of normal. by saturday, it improved to 17 percent. local water acknowledges say the rain has been the "drop in the bucket" for the reservoirs. we need some more storms to make a difference. >> friday, president obama will travel to fresno for the first visit ever to the central valley city and will meet with farmers and others hit hard. republicans in the house of representatives pass add bill to alleviate drought concerns but the white house and democrats in the senate say the bill has no chance because it rolls back environmental laws. california has just been given two more years to reduce prison overcrowding. that order came from a three-judge panel, delaying an

april deadline to reduce the population to 112,000 inmates. california remains more than 5,000 inmates over the limit set by the court. although the state has built more prison space and used private cells. the governor says they can reach the new level by the new deadline. caltran is giving members of the media a first look at the storm-related leaks on the new eastern span of the bay bridge. crews continuing their examination of the new eastern span this morning after being out there all day yesterday, they say rain water is filtering into the steel structure under the new road deck. some engineers say water could cause erosion and weaken the bridge but officials say the amount of water is small, and just needs to be mopped up. >> the western span of the bay bridge is the new part and it will be recristed tomorrow in honor of former mayor willie background. caltran has signs on the upper and lower deck with the new

name. they are covered for now and will be uncovered tomorrow. the california naacp raised private funds to pay for them. the former mayor brown said he thinks this could be his greatest legacy. >> number one, there is nothing i don't think that could compare to having the second most used bridge in the country. >> it is the western span. tomorrow's ceremony is expected to draw who's who of more than 500 people from politics to sports, entertainment and high society. governor brown who has opposed renaming the span is not scheduled to attend. >> hayward police now say that a homeowner would shot and killed a male intruder knew the victim. the shooting happened during a home invasion on western boulevard in hayward around 5:30 last night. officers arrived they found a man, dead from gunshot wounds. miss have now also confirmed a woman being treated at the

hospital with gunshot wounded was involved in the home invasion and are looking if a third female suspect. san francisco mayor held a ceremony to honor three good samaritans who risked their lives to save a tourist who fell in the bay. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard joins us. they are true heroes. they are. in the right place at the right time jumping interest action and into the bay. >> two men, two different backgrounds, both very brave. honored by the city of san francisco for saving a live. >> she did something that we all joke around, you never want to do and that is step backward. >> the mayor said a tourist from taiwan was take pictures on the pier near the golden gate bridge last january and she fell in the frigid waters. a man who lives in the city and another who is an international student from china jumped into the water to rescue her.

>> they did not know each other but they acted as we would think san franciscoans would act with a big heart, without thinking about the danger to themselves. >> i was trained adds an observation lifeguard in south carolina and did it many years. i actually have a foot injury and i was contemplating whether to go in and when i saw the situation deteriorating, i decided that i needed to go in. >> it is a person's life and i don't think about the consequences. >> together, the woman was pulled from the water with first responder showing up. >> without a moment's hesitation, rushed in, she was unconscious when they got her out and in a coma at the hospital for a couple of days and now she is 100 percent. >> she is back living in her native taiwan. if you called both of these brave men "heroes," you would be right. >> very heroic thing. do you feel like a hero?

we are happy about the rain. >> we will see if the faucet has been turned off. for a while. a slight chance of rain wednesday and thursday but it is drying out. we could have a chance of rain but it will not be a repeat. we have four more days to watch that. from the roof, good morning. live doppler 7 hd shows it is very quiet. there is dry air punching in with a moist boundary layer so it will be hard to headache the clouds today. we will have pockets of sunshine from time to time. you can see our visibility is way higher than they were this morning at 2.5 is as low as we get at half moon bay. and seven to 10 which is unlimited across the horizon. we have not moved much in most areas. we are starting to hit the mid-to-upper 60's in concord at 57 and 59 in livermore and 58 in san jose and 55 at oakland and 52 is the cool spot, and 59 in san carlos.
