at live doppler seven hd. you can see clouds around now. low clouds now moving in from the coast. rainfall totals are impressive. so this is wednesday afternoon. we've received a foot of rainfall. and nearly eight inches in santa rosa. very little as you move eastward over to redwood city and out to the east bay, those locations need more rainfall. here is a look at rainfall virtually every location needs many, many inches of rain. snow

lee joins us with the story. >> reporter: un plaza is where the family was spotted. they're a family of seven, mother, father, five children. they were penniless and homeless. they met four officers from southern station. three have children. what happened next was a special act of kindness. >> didn't have a place to stay. you know? otherwise we'd have had to sleep on the streets. iet was wed, windy friday night in san francisco. joel silva. his wife, five children had in place to go. salvation army workers handing out hot food and coffee saw the family of seven. they called police. >> it's a well being check on the family who had been reported as wandering streets, in inclement weather. and the report came out they looked like they needed help. >> these four officers located the family at carl's junior near 7th and market.

>> they had food but they were low on formula for the baby z some basic wet wipes and what knots. they just couldn't be out i was way past some of the bed times we just pooled our resources got them wet wipes and needs. and some went ask located a hotel within walking distance. >> the officers reached into their pockets, came up with enough money for a night at the hotel. >> we had to do something. i mean between four officers hotel night is not the most expensive thing in the world >> we wanted to help out, especially with five kids we couldn't leave them like that. >> at that time it was the right thing to do. i know we all had warm beds to go home to that night. >> thanks to officers, so did the silvas friday night. joe says thank you. >> they're going above and beyond.
