celski and shani davis failing to medal. now, davis beat -- this is known as just his treat for him, the 500. really is not favored for that one. he's got big races ahead on wednesday and saturday. >> looking forward to that. also this morning special tribute to shirley temple black coming up. but right now, to the major storm now slamming the south, set to wallop the east coast again. ginger heading our extreme weather team coverage. all happening in the next two day. >> yes, that's it. two days. because there's two rounds. and we're using the words like crippling and historic again in parts of georgia and south carolina. that's what the national weather service is saying here. southeast of atlanta and just into south carolina, we think three-quarters to an inch of ice. that is a lot of ice. when you put it on power lines, when you put it on the roads, this is going to be a paralyzer for sure. we have to go right to atlanta, though, this morning because steve osunsami is just in the rain but the rain/snow line just to the north. this is already a messy morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning, ginger.

this entire area under a winter storm warning. authorities are reporting sleet and snow on some of the overpasses, especially north of the city. but they say the worst is still yet to come. all of that ice that they fear could blanket this city. this morning, here we go again with the winter storm moving in on the deep south. the sleet and snow starting to hit alabama and northern georgia. families across atlanta worried sick about being stuck home under the ice went racing to their grocery and hardware stores. >> because i have two 8-year-old twins at home and a husband and they all eat a lot. >> reporter: this morning stores are out of salt, sand and kitty litter. at this ace hardware, these were the last two bottles of ice melt walking out the door. >> and, of course, everybody else runs out, people come from further away, so we run out faster. >> reporter: no one here is trying to repeat the disaster of two weeks ago where 2 inches of snow turned highways into demolition derbies. this man will never forget the 11 hours he spent trying to drive home. >> i just hope that we don't get

in the same mess we did last time. >> reporter: georgia's governor roundly criticized for not acting early is all over it this time, declaring a state of emergency on monday, way ahead of the storm, and holding multiple news conferences, including this one on live tv outside the sand and salt depot. >> we are trying to be ready and prepared and react as quickly as possible. >> reporter: the city could get up to 2 inches of snow and a quarter inch of ice. the hard winter has caused a run on salt nationwide. one suburb here says it may have to order from out of state. >> we have 2 1/2 days' worth which will probably get us through this event. however, we're going to go ahead and make that move to contact a salt vendor in charleston, south carolina. >> reporter: the city of atlanta has more than 120 pieces of equipment out, pretreating the roads. schools are closed. and people are being told to stay home. they're taking it quite seriously this time. ginger? >> doing it right there in atlanta and hopefully in south carolina, too. i wanted to time this out for

good morning, amy. >> good morning, robin. it is such an exciting win for the u.s. women in the first ski slopestyle event ever and you are all talking winter storms. we're talking warm temperatures. in fact, i just got back from olympic village and i had to take off my jacket because i was so hot. but we're hearing from the head of the sochi olympics just releasing a statement saying there is no need to bring in stored snow just yet. however, they say they are ready to do so if it becomes necessary. this morning it's not just the competition heating up in sochi, temperatures reaching up to 60 degrees, warmer than atlanta. >> one of the fastest times. >> reporter: those temps are causing big problems. the mogul course and downhill run now covered with dangerously soft snow. >> a tenth ahead of the pace. >> reporter: which some say may have led to america's laurenne

ross's devastating crash overnight. and on the halfpipe, this morning's qualifying run is back on track after a training session last night caused organizers to temporarily postpone this morning's qualifying run that led athletes to complain of dangerous and slushy bumps on the normally flat pipe bottom. american snowboarder hannah teeter tweeting this, they've been having a tough time making it good. practice days have been harsh." even shaun white says the pipe is disappointing and is antsy as he prepares to defend his title. >> i go up and down. i'm excited then i'm not excited. it's a lot of mixed feelings rolled up into one. >> reporter: the mild temperatures also canceling a training session for the women's downhill today. but the heat was no obstacle for team usa's julia mancuso who blazed past much of the competition in the women's super combined alpine skiing taking home the bronze. finally, a photo finish faux pas in penmen's speed skating.

the netherlands' jan smeekens thinking he won gold but then a time adjustment knocking off 0.01 seconds, dropping him into second place, behind his teammate, michel mulder. let's get the latest news. today, in the first olympic ski jumps by women. the biggest hope for a u.s. medal is sarah hendrickson. who tweeted this morning, three women ski jumpers will walk away with medals today, but 27 others helped make history. and that's what we have to be proud of. great olympic spirit there and in a heartwarming moment we are all talking about take a look at this video of canadian alex bilodeau who took gold. in the men's mogul. there was one person he wanted to celebrate with. that was his older brother frederic who suffers from cerebral palsy. he said of frederic, he has dreams like you and i, but he can't go after most of those dreams. i have the ability that i can go after those dreams and out of respect for him, i go after them. what a tremendous story. robin? >> oh, it was, amy. thank you. we were just saying we were all

child feel like a grown-up. >> absolutely. >> little cherry in there too. what are the other news headlines, josh? a warning from a north carolina hospital that nearly 20 patients may have been exposed to a deadly brain disease. a patient who recently had surgery at the novak health forsyth medical center was later confirmed to have the rare disease. it is similar to mad cow. instruments used in the surgery were, in fact, improperly sterilized. doctors say the risk to other patients is low, but it could take years or even decades for symptoms to appear. and a new delay in obamacare. the white house is giving medium-sized businesses, those that employ between 50 and 99 workers, another year before their insurance mandate will kick in. republicans such as house speaker john boehner say the president is giving corporations a break but not struggling families. and this morning, a rare look at america's elite special forces in action. capturing a terrorist suspect just off the streets of libya. that van cuts off senior al qaeda leader anas al libi back in october.

troops then, as you can see, jump out, guns drawn, take him from his car, a second car had blocked him from escaping. mission accomplished. in just 60 seconds. right now a disaster is unfolding in england where the river thames has overflowed its banks surging to its highest level in decades. hundreds of homes have flooded. hundreds more as you can see here are in danger west of london following the wettest month, get this, in nearly 250 years. and in illinois, it looked like a disaster as cars lined up outside a gas station. take a look anxious to reach the pumps. there was no shortage, however, there was a mistake. the station was unknowingly selling gas for a penny a gallon for two hours. one driver posted that, filled up the tank for 13 cents. traffic in fact got so bad, police finally had to come and rain on the gas parade and tell the station about the pricing issue.

papers of a hillary clinton confidante. the newly released diary shed new light on clinton's thinking during what may have been the lowest point of her white house years, the monica lewinsky affair. and abc's jon karl has the details. >> reporter: for decades diane blair kept a diary chronicling in great detail her close friendship with hillary clinton. right up until blair's death in 2000. but it remained under seal for years. and it was reported for the first time on monday by the conservative website washington free beacon. blair's diary portrays mrs. clinton as a hard-nosed political operative who is, quote, in despair that nobody in the white house is tough and mean enough. the papers describe personal conversations blair writes that she had with mrs. clinton during her time in the white house. offering new insight into hillary clinton's mindset immediately after bill clinton admitted having an affair with white house intern monica lewinsky. >> indeed, i did have a relationship with miss lewinsky that was not appropriate. in fact, it was wrong.

>> reporter: it was a lapse, blair writes, but she says to his credit he tried to break it off, tried to pull away, tried to manage someone who was clearly a narcissistic looney toon. but it was beyond control. blair also writes about mrs. clinton's frustration with critics who called her too aggressive and too political. i'm a proud woman, blair quotes mrs. clinton saying in 1996. i know it confuses people when i change my hairdos. i know i should pretend not to have any opinions, but i'm not going to. i gave up my name, got contact lenses, but i'm not going to pretend to be somebody that i'm not. all told, the papers offer a positive portrayal of hillary clinton from one of her closest friends, none of this appears to be politically damaging, and asked to comment on it, hillary clinton's spokesperson simply said "no comment." george? >> and they'll probably stick with that for awhile. jon karl, thanks. >> you think? all right, george. now to a striking new fbi

warning about lasers being flashed at planes, potentially blinding pilots. the safety of thousands of flights on the line right now and abc news has the latest numbers this morning. abc's david kerley with the details. >> reporter: it is the most critical phase of flight. >> san francisco, that laser is almost right underneath us right now. >> reporter: pilots landing their aircraft, but in the range of laser pointers. this is happening more than ten times every day in this country. this pen-size pointers can light up a cockpit possibly blinding a pilot temporarily. >> two green flashes and it caught the first officer in his eye. >> reporter: the number of laser hits climbing every year. in 2012, 3400 strikes. but this morning, the faa tells abc news, that climbed to more than 3900, an all-time high last year. the federal government has had it. >> it's not just a danger to the pilots as well as to the passengers, but to the people on the ground. >> reporter: so later today the fbi will announce it's offering a reward, $10,000 to anyone reporting someone who lasered a plane.

the government is also launching an educational campaign aimed at teens, explaining that aiming a laser pointer at a plane is a felony that can get you five years in federal prison. >> this is very serious. and the fbi is treating it as such. >> reporter: the problem is these lasers are so available and can be so dangerous if pointed at a plane. the fbi is rolling out this new initiative across the country in some of the cities that have had the most laser hits. that includes portland, houston, phoenix, and los angeles. robin? >> continues to escalate, that problem. david, thank you so much. let's get another chaek of the weather now with ginger. >> it's not just the southeast saying alabama and georgia you heard about earlier but anywhere from austin, texas, up to philadelphia in some sort of watch, advisory or warning this morning. and it's going to be for the next three to four days depending on your location so let's kind of time it out and show you the snow totals. how much you can expect in the large generic swath region. there from western north carolina through western virginia, eastern tennessee, and

the defense now presenting its case. the big question, will dunn testify? abc's ryan owens is in jacksonville and has the latest for us. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. the defense says they only have one, maybe two witnesses left. the thing everyone here wants to know, will michael dunn be one of them? >> i was so afraid that i didn't have time to think. i only reacted. >> reporter: the prosecution rested monday without showing the jury michael dunn's interrogation tape where he admits to killing 17-year-old jordan davis after dunn claims the unarmed teen pointed a weapon at him. >> it was either a barrel or a stick. but sir -- they're, they're -- they're like, we're going to kill you. >> reporter: the defense is not

allowed to enter the tape as evidence. so the only way the jury will hear dunn's side of the story now is if he takes the stand. >> oh, my god, somebody is shooting. somebody is shooting out of their car. >> reporter: to explain why he fired ten shots at an suv full of teens at this jacksonville gas station in november of 2012. >> how many separate gunshot wounds did you find to jordan davis' body? >> three gunshot wounds. >> reporter: prosecutors ended their case with graphic testimony from the medical examiner who performed the autopsy on jordan davis. she showed the jury the clothes the teen was wearing the night he was shot. the jury also got a look at the semiautomatic pistol that ended davis' young life. prosecutors say dunn should spend the rest of his life in prison for killing the teen. they say in an argument over loud rap music. >> very nice guy. >> reporter: so far dunn's defense has amounted to little more than a couple of character witnesses who say he's a good man. he pleaded not guilty, but will he take the stand to say more? the parents of the young man he killed hope so. >> the family wants answers. only michael dunn can give those answers.

>> reporter: so it seems odd, but they actually want to hear there their son's killer? >> they do. it's unfortunate in america that the young black child doesn't get the benefit of the doubt and this family wants to hear this guy explain why he didn't give their son the benefit of the doubt. why he had to make up these lies. >> reporter: sunday is jordan's birthday. he would have turned 19. his family says they would like to have a verdict, some sort of resolution by then. at the pace we're on, george, it appears they will at least get that. >> okay, ryan, thanks very much. more on this from criminal defense attorney roy black, played a big role in so many prominent trials down in florida. thanks for joining us. you heard how ryan ended. the family of the victim wants to hear from him. do you think he'll testify? >> well, george, there's no doubt he will testify. if he doesn't testify, there's no defense. he might as well plead guilty. there's no evidence in the record right now to show self-defense. the only way he gets a self-defense instruction and he

can argue it to the jury is if he takes the witness stand. >> so you think that's going to happen. you also think that the prosecution has overstepped a bit. >> yeah, typical. this office does this all the time. they did it with zimmerman and they're doing it here. they charged him with first degree murder, which requires premeditation. this is really a manslaughter case. this is where people get into an argument, it gets out of control and a shooting happens. this is not premeditated murder. this is not second degree with a depraved mind with ill will and hatred. this is really manslaughter. >> but let me just play devil's advocate for a second. premeditation doesn't have to occur over a period of weeks. the prosecution has shown that michael dunn had to take the gun out of the glove compartment. had to take it out of the holster, had to load it, and then had to fire the ten shots. >> sure, you can always go through steps like that to break it down and try to show more time. but premeditation means you knew the person before this. something occurred. there was an argument. you went away and you came back. it's not where there's sudden

combat and there's a shooting. no matter how many times you load the gun and what have you, that's not really premeditation. it's not planning. it's not cold-blooded. >> take us inside your office. you're representing michael dunn. how do you prepare him for the stand? >> well, i would think right from the beginning, right after the first interview, you're telling him he has to testify. you're going over the questions. he's going to have to explain the fear that he was in, why he shot, then he has to explain why did you flee the scene? why didn't you call 911? why do you stay overnight in the hotel and then go home? he has a lot of explaining to do and it's not going to be easy. >> so it's not -- >> he's -- >> it's not enough for him to convince the jury he saw a gun or he thought he saw a gun? >> oh, yeah, he has to show there was a reasonable fear because self-defense requires it be an objective person reasonably in fare of their life. so there has to be something from these kids to show that he was afraid of them. >> okay. roy black, thanks very much.

that right now there is no need to bring in stored snow, which they do have on site despite 60-degree temperatures now raising safety concerns on the slopes. and a developing story this morning, a mafia bust stretching in fact from here in new york all the way to italy much the fbi and italian police have busted a drug ring with ties to the gambino crime family. eight suspects arrested in the u.s. nearly two dozen in italy. they're accused of smuggling cocaine in crates of coconuts and pineapples bound for the united states. and the los angeles coffee shop that called itself dumb starbucks to poke fun at the real starbucks shockingly has now been shut down by the health department. apparently it didn't have the proper license. the mock store was just giving coffee away. finally exposed yesterday as a publicity stunt for a cable television show. you don't say. and finally, phenomenal story here. it's nice to get birthday love

at her first olympics espinosa yesterday crossing the finish line. i had no idea after that slalom run i would still be on the podium, so it was more of a mentally recognizing that i was in third and i thought i would not be anywhere close to it and knowing that i got a medal, i really felt like a little kid and i was screaming pretty loud. >> you -- we heard you all the way back here in the u.s. we're very proud of you and happy for you and all of team usa. enjoy yourself, julia. take care. thank you. >> thank you. and she really did let out a scream. she wasn't expecting to get that bronze. she had to come from behind to do it. this is the story of the morning. >> it's terrific. two wonderful young women strangers living thousands of miles apart. never knew one another, came across one another by absolute happenstance and found that they shared a life-changing secret.

change their lives forever. what was that first moment like? >> i put the phone down to put it away for a second and i was like, picked it back up and kept looking at it and checked everyone i knew. >> reporter: they would soon discover they both have been adopted after being born on the same day in the same korean city. could it be? were they identical twins separated at birth? >> my connection is really bad. >> reporter: decided to skype with one another. >> oh, my god. you're european. >> hi. >> this is a weird experience. >> yes, so weird. >> reporter: what was the visceral reaction of seeing yourself talking to yourself? >> it was weird but i feel like there was a strange calm and comfort, as well and something that i can't really explain. >> reporter: life story shared in that first conversation. >> everything. >> yes. >> we talked for three hours. >> reporter: really. >> yeah, like so much and then

other people's lives. why? >> it's an overwhelming thing to know that -- she's like tiny asian hobbits can make a difference. it's so silly but it's -- it brings back all that joy and happiness as a child. and it makes it real. >> what is it like to be able to touch each other. >> just right, i guess. >> it feels normal. it's just how it's supposed to be. >> your necklaces, what does it say and the significance of them to you is what? >> it says best friends forever and i got them for christmas because i never had them growing up. it sounds really crazy but i think we need those little kid moments and those cheesy mopes together. >> you feel like you get to go back and color in a picture you know how it will look but get to have the fun of coloring it in. >> that is's the exact feeling. it's not the longing or searching to figure out what it was, it's just constant support
