and ginger is tracking all of this for us this morning. >> plenty of cold air in new york city. i'll tell you that. 14 right now, by the way. we are looking at more than 20 states now in some sort of winter weather advisory, watches or warnings, anywhere from texas up to maine. and the heart of this, it's developing right now. it is falling in the southeast and the ice is what we are most concerned about. augusta, georgia, almost a quarter inch of ice already. in columbia you'll end up with close to an inch. hard to imagine what that does, but think about that. an inch standing on top of an object and on the bottom of it too will weigh down power lines. look at atlanta, all that mixed precipitation and snow. and that is where steve osunsami, part of the extreme team this morning, is standing. steve? >> reporter: good morning, ginger. i don't know if you can hear it, you can sort of feel the ice sting your face. it's mixed in with snow as it hits you. this is what is normally a very busy peachtree street in downtown atlanta, one of the busiest thoroughfares in town and it is covered in ice. barely a car on the road. the sleet made for slick roads

in north carolina causing spinout after spinout. this black ice creating dangerous road conditions and the georgia national guard rolled out overnight. >> we're going to go out there on the highways and make sure all of our citizens are okay. >> reporter: nearly 500 soldiers and 125 vehicles joining a growing army of salt trucks and snowplows trying to stay ahead of what forecasters expect to be a devastating ice storm. the state's response to 2 inches snow two weeks ago was laughable, with gridlock that lasted all night. this time, georgia's governor came out early telling families to stay off the roads. >> this is one of mother nature's worst kinds of storms that can be inflicted on the south. >> reporter: this family wasn't having it. getting enough gas to head out of state. >> we are leaving. we're not taking any chances. >> reporter: the icy roads can turn deadly fast. in dallas, texas, a firefighter died when a sliding car pushed him off an overpass while trying to help this driver who hit the ice moments before. >> another car coming at me out

of control and i just curled up and i put my head down. i just curled up and put my head down. >> reporter: just outside ft. worth crash after crash. watch this suv spin out smashing into the guardrail and then another driver. the driver of this pickup nearly lost it, too, but came to a stop before hitting anyone. the skyways are a mess this morning, as well. more than 1,500 flights in and out of atlanta will never get off the ground today. over 2,500 flights canceled across the country. the big concern this morning now, power outages. already this morning, we're hear of 20,000 people in georgia alone waking up in the dark this morning because they lost power. those power lines snapping because of the cold. we know that there are small armies of utility crews on both ends of the city waiting to come in and repair those lines. ginger? >> thank you so much, steve. i know that number will go up because of the wind, and i'm glad you mentioned that. it is not just the ice but then

20 to 30-mile-per-hour gusts on the back side. that's going to take some stuff down. the snow -- because this is the other part. everybody is interested in seeing. look at the totals. match the color to your location. washington, d.c., right now in that 5 to 8-inch range. as i've been saying for the last couple of days, what concerns me is that mix. much like the last one we had in new york city, we had 4 inches in the morning then you had sleet and snow so that's going to cut down on totals. but either way, you get sleet, then you get snow, then you get sleet again and then rain, it's going to be a mess. okay? i promise you that tomorrow. too bad we can't send some of that snow to sochi, where we go right now. the winter olympics, tough day for the americans. disappointment for shaun white and our women's ski jumpers. but there were some memorable performances, too. and abc's amy robach has all the latest at our "gma" olympic headquarters in sochi. good morning, amy. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, george. shaun white's spills on the halfpipe were the big story of tuesday's action creating a flutter among fans and athletes

of marissa castelli and simon shnapir, best known for their incredible size differential. he is 6'4". she is just 5'0". they had a big triple twist and throw triple salchow but it was only good enough for ninth place in this power house field. the other u.s. team felicia zhang and nathan bartholomay came in 15th. we will find out who grabs the gold today in the pairs freeskate. a tough loss this morning for the u.s. women's hockey team, falling to their arch r50i68s, the canadians. it was a rematch of that gold-medal contest from vancouver back in 2010 which they lost in a thrilling match. if you're disappointed, and i know you are, guess what, it may not be over yet because the two teams could meet again in the gold-medal match and that is coming up on february 20th, so we will stay tuned for that and keep our fingers crossed.

[ speaking french ] >> reporter: "we love americans," president hollande said. although we don't always say so. but it was his personal love life that provided the unspoken drama. he arrived stag after an affair with a french actress ended his relationship with the woman who had been considered france's first lady just last month. hollande ended up sitting between the obamas. the first lady decked out in this purple and black carolina herrera gown. former nba star jason collins tweeted that he wanted a dance with her. good luck with that. unlike previous state dinners, there was no dancing at this one. perhaps an effort to keep hollande of the awkward position of having to find a dance partner. how much does this cost? we don't know but this week we learned how much the state

dinners of president obama's first term cost, they ranged from $216,000 for the german dinner to $570,000 for india. this was a pretty big one, george. i imagine it will be on the expensive side and, of course, as always with state dinners, taxpayers will pick up the tab. >> they will pick up the tab. some good news coming out of washington yesterday, as well. that debt limit passed without real controversy. >> reporter: yeah, this was a really big deal. republicans completely backed down on this. no strings attached, exactly what president obama asked them to do, at least when it came to the debt ceiling. >> first time in three years. okay, jon karl, thanks very much. >> okay there, george. to a story rocking the rural town of lebanon, tennessee. a mail bomb going off in the hands of a homeowner leaving a devastating scene behind. abc's pierre thomas has the latest and joins us now from washington. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, robin. today a murder mystery unfolding in small town tennessee. authorities fear this may be only the beginning.

the shattered windows of this lovely home hint of the devastation inside from a blast that could be heard from miles away. >> i heard a big boom. thought someone might have actually backed into the building next to my office. >> reporter: authorities say 74-year-old retired lawyer don setzer was killed after a powerful package bomb exploded in his home. his wife marion was critically wounded in the attack and this morning is clinging to her life at the vanderbilt university medical center. overnight police continue to sift through the rubble looking for evidence and trying to find parts of the bomb and the package it came in. police have no motive in the attack and are offering an $8,000 reward for any leads. >> we completely rely on the public assistance so that we can follow up on any lead. >> reporter: the bombing happened about 31 miles outside of nashville in tiny lebanon, tennessee. a place where this kind of savage attack just doesn't happen. >> they're just the perfect

neighbor and we felt like this was a place that nothing would ever happen. >> reporter: this morning police are warning residents in the area to be careful of unexpected packages. translation, no one knows if more package bombs are coming. robin? >> so frightening, pierre, thank you. get the rest of the top stories from josh. we'll begin with a major study out this morning sure to ignite a new debate over mammograms. researchers in canada studied some 90,000 women for two decades and found that women ages 40 to 59 who got a regular mammogram lived no longer than those who did not get the screening. and they found more than 20% of the cancers uncovered by a mammogram pose no health risk. now, the american cancer society is expected to revise screening guidelines later this year, but as always, talk to your own doctor about your risks before making any changes as we well know here at "good morning

america." and a developing story from the mountains of eastern oregon this morning. two skiers have been killed in yet another avalanche. two others who were injured were stranded on the mountain overnight because of poor visibility. 12 people have died in avalanches thus far this season. also, happening right now the flood crisis near london worsening. thousands of homes are already underwater and now much of england is bracing for a storm that could bring a month's worth of rain in just two days. threatening even more homes such as the one you see here obviously on the brink of being overrun by floodwaters, the worst in almost 250 years. it's one of the largest ever child car seat recalls. this morning graco is recalling nearly 4 million child safety seats because their buckles could get jammed making it hard to free a child in the event of an emergency. we do have a list of the affected models on our website, goodmorningamerica.com on yahoo!

in wisconsin, the school bus driver has been fired for this. fighting back against a teenager who suddenly attacked him. the driver punched back but in the process the bus he was driving crashed into three cars. still, the driver wants his job back. he says he was just defending himself. finally workers at this construction site in seattle were not expecting any big surprises when they were digging but they got one. they found a tusk from a woolly mammoth dating back to the last ice age just sitting there 30 feet down. if you're wondering what that used to be affixed to, do we have the picture of what the mammoth looked like 15,000 -- it's really big. as you can tell. just imagine a gigantic elephant with wool and huge, huge tusks. >> i like your reenactment. >> yeah. >> one other note, one of the great news men of his time, tom brokaw announcing yesterday he is battling bone marrow cancer but he says he is going to live on. he's got many more adventures

with the dramatic testimony in the so-called loud music trial. michael dunn is charged with killing an unarmed teenager and took the stand in his own defense. abc's ryan owens has the story. >> lyme looking out the window and i said you're not going to kill me, you son of a [ bleep ] and i shot. >> he dramatically reenacted how he shot jordan davis. >> he opened the door then he looked at me and said you're dead, [ bleep ]. >> at that point what did you believe was about to happen to you? >> i thought i was going to be killed. >> reporter: even though police say the teen didn't have a gun dunn stuck to his story that davis was a foul-mouthed gun-toting teen who threatened him after davis refused to turn down his rap music. >> my rear view mirror was shaking, my eardrums were vibrating. and this was ridiculously loud

music. >> reporter: davis' parents could do nothing but listen but the prosecution could and they pounced. >> mr. dunn, the truth is you never told the love of your love that those boys had a gun. >> you weren't there. >> reporter: prosecutors say dunn fired ten times at an suv with four teens inside. >> oh, my god. somebody is shooting. >> reporter: killing davis in november of 2012 because he felt the teen disrespected him. >> jordan davis was never a threat to you, was he, mr. dunn? >> absolutely he was. >> reporter: prosecutor john guy also hit dunn hard for not calling police to report the shooting. instead, he and his fiancee returned to this hotel and ordered a pizza. >> you are familiar with 911, are you not? >> yes, i am. >> when you were at the hotel you didn't call 911. >> i didn't call the police until the following morning. >> you called the pizza man. >> reporter: dunn has pleaded not guilty and told the jury this is a clear case of

self-defense, but prosecutors hope the jury will convict the software developer of first degree murder. the jury should begin deliberating later today with michael dunn's own words fresh in their mind. >> i was in fear for my life. >> reporter: for "good morning america," ryan owens, abc news, jacksonville, florida. >> okay, time to bring in our legal team. abc's dan abrams along with nancy grace, the host of "nancy grace" on hln. how did he do? >> he had to testify because he's claiming self-defense and the only testimony really can come from him. he was okay. there are real problems with some of the inconsistencies in his account. i thought that his demeanor was a little problematic. at times he almost -- >> smiled. >> but he also sounded almost legalistic at times as if he were reciting the statute as to what self-defense would entail. so there were a number of problems, but, look, he laid out the basics for his self-defense claim. >> nancy, a lot of people

noticed he kind of choked up when he was talking about his dog but not about the killing. >> yes, i noticed that too. he was extremely smug and he even went so far as to say, i don't know why the prosecution didn't bring on my police interrogation tapes. well, be careful what you ask for. for you will surely get it because after the state basically forced him to take the stand by not introducing those tapes thereby his story never got in front of the jury, he had to take the stand as dan pointed out. of course, you always have the right to remain silent under the fifth amendment but then on rebuttal, the state brings on those police tapes to show a major, major inconsistency. dunn said to police, that jordan davis, the boy, the unarmed boy got out of his car and said, this s-h-i-t is going down now and was about to shoot michael dunn but he never said that at

any other time. never told his fiancee who he sent in to get more wine, more booze. she comes back in the car. he never said, hey, that guy pulled a shotgun on me. he never even mentioned that he saw a gun. >> piece of testimony -- >> the crucial question in this case, right, the legal question is, was his belief reasonable that he was in danger? for his belief to be reasonable, you have to believe that there was a gun in that car and to believe there was a gun in that car, you have to believe him. dunn, who just testified. it is the crucial question in this case and if these jurors don't believe he had a gun -- >> on cross-examination he said he could have imagined the whole thing, please, he told police, yeah, i could have imagined i saw the gun and we find out he's half deaf so now he's trying to tell the jury he is in his car with the windows rolled up and he hears jordan davis in another car say i am going to shoot you. >> his best chance is for a

lesser conviction. charged with first degree murder. an aggressive charge in connection with this case. i think his lawyer would be very pleased if there's an instruction on manslaughter and gets a lower conviction on something like manslaughter. >> roy black was saying something similar, nancy. you agree? >> i think that it would be a huge celebration if they get a lesser included defense like manslaughter but i'm telling you this, he sat there and looked at the photos of this dead teen and never even -- his lip never even tremb trembled. when he talked about his dog he had to get his hander chief. >> if you take his account seriously, there is he an argument to that. his claim is that this guy is saying, i'm going to kill you, he's getting out of the car to try to kill him. >> that's just like me saying i'm afraid you're going to shoot me through the camera. i might believe that but that's not a grounds for self-defense. >> we have to get to closing arguments. to ginger with the weather.

faces of these games trying to make history looking to win gold in the 1000 meters for a third consecutive olympics. and a large new mammogram study is raising many new questions this morning. doctors studied some 90,000 middle-aged women and found death rates were essentially the same among women who got regular mammograms and those who did not. researchers have also found that one in five cancers revealed by the mammograms were not a health risk. still, be sure to consult your physician before making any changes to your protocol. and in arizona border control agents have uncovered a secret drug tunnel under the mexico border. they've arrested three men in doing so. agents seized more than 640 pounds of marijuana and heroin. the tunnel, some 500 feet long, the largest ever found in that area. and some real dramatic police work here in sacramento. this is actually a crime in realtime. officers were chasing a suspect when he hopped on a bike trying to escape. this is actually just a
