good friday morning. i'm marci gonzalez in for diana perez. >> and i'm john muller. happy valentine's day, everyone. we begin with the punishing winter storm that won't quit. take a look at the radar. the storm is starting to make its way out but not before dumping several more inches of snow from washington, d.c. to boston. >> the storm is blamed for at least 21 deaths, most of which were traffic accidents. more than 7,000 flights have been canceled since the storm started. >> and the snow is on the ground. in the 49 of 50 states, only florida is snow-free. abc's tahman bradley reports from washington, d.c., where a second wave of snow fell overnight. >> reporter: mother nature's valentine's gift, rain, ice, sleet and thundersnow. a final punch from the massive winter storm that socked 100 million americans. >> it's been horrible, horrible. >> ah, now this. don't you love it so? holy cow. what can i say? >> reporter: from georgia to maine, dangerous whiteout conditions, cars stuck.

>> this is deep. it's in there. >> reporter: some abandoned. even emergency vehicles can't get through the icy mess. in brooklyn, new york, a pregnant woman was struck and killed by a snowplow, her baby delivered by emergency c-section. in manchester, new hampshire, a firefighter helped this elderly woman get through the snow. the iconic philadelphia art museum steps became a sledding course. >> here we go! >> reporter: new york city has been battered this winter, seven days of an inch of snow or more. altogether, 40 inches of snow in the big apple so far this year. >> sick of the cold really, but, yeah, i'm ready for spring. >> reporter: the south is still dealing with falling trees and widespread power outages. for many it's going to be another hard day of digging out. >> heavy snow, yeah, yeah. we take lots of breaks. >> reporter: at the nation's airports, crews have been working around the clock to de-ice planes and clear runways. yesterday, one in five flights

were canceled. the washington, d.c. region saw its most significant snowfall in four years. now that it's finally stopped snowing, they're going to try to get the city back up and running. the federal government re-opens today on a two-hour delay. john and marci. >> all right, tahman bradley, live in washington. thank you. and it's snowing again here in new york city after rain and even lightning last night. another 1 to 3 inches is expected on top of the foot of snow yesterday. >> and i heard that thunder last night. really something. all right. we'll get the complete forecast now from accuweather meteorologist jim dickey. jim. >> good morning, john and marci. our storm system departing here, snow will slowly come to an end, still some heavy snow from new york city north and eastward through these early morning hours, but as the morning progresses storm moves into canada, the snow comes to an end not before many spots picked up well over a foot of snow from bangor through new york city down on towards philadelphia, d.c., baltimore. now, unfortunately, another storm on the heels of this that will bring another burst of heavy snowfall to new england

headed on through saturday. john and marci, back to you. >> all right, thanks, jim. stay with abc news as the storm finally makes its way out. we'll have live team coverage later on "good morning america." all right. for all the snow and rain in the east, it's a very different story in the west where california's facing a devastating drought. president obama headed there today to discuss what to do. he will take part in a roundtable in fresno then take a local farm tour and deliver remarks afterwards. he will travel down to palm springs where he will meet with king abdullah of jordan. >> all right. there's snow in the east, drought in california, flooding in britain, and a volcano is erupting in indonesia. ashes covering everything in parts of the country. two people were killed when their homes collapsed under the weight of the ash. 100,000 people have been evacuated. it is the first major eruption of this volcano in more than 20 years. all right, in california, hundreds of thousands of b.a.r.t. riders in san francisco facing a measles scare. a student at u.c. berkeley diagnosed with the disease after taking the train home to the suburbs for several days.

the student contracted the measles overseas. he had not been vaccinated. anyone who rode the b.a.r.t. between the 4th and 7th of this month may have been exposed. a federal judge has ruled virginia's ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional, but gay couples won't be rushing to the courthouse just yet. the judge has stayed the order until appeals can be heard. both sides believe the issue won't be settled until it's heard by the supreme court. all right, now to sochi we go where a russian worker is in stable condition after being struck by a bobsled. >> the sled was testing track conditions yesterday when it hit the man. now, he suffered broken legs and a concussion. it's believed the worker may not have heard an announcement that the sled was approaching because he was using an air blower. all right, as for the events thursday, it was a mixed day of results for team usa. abc's kirit radia has more. >> reporter: break out the brooms. team usa swept the medals stand in the men's slopestyle skiing. josh christensen took the gold after nailing three jumps

totaling ten full spins within 15 seconds all while skiing off ramps backwards. teammate gus kenworthy grabbed the silver. nick goepper who skis without poles got the bronze. >> now that we're the first olympics slopestyle medalists, it's even bigger and that we swept, i can't believe it. it's perfect. >> i think today was one of the most insane competitions. >> reporter: the u.s. men's hockey team dominated slovakia, 7-1. next up, a showdown with a tough russian team tomorrow. >> we're going to have to work our butts off, do the little things and play our blue collar hockey in order to win that game. >> reporter: also on the ice, american figure skater jeremy abbott suffered a bad fall attempting a complex move. he remained on the ice for some time but then got up and completed his program. the men's figure skating gold will be awarded today. u.s. skier bode miller is also back in action today in the men's super combined, and american women are among the leaders going into the final

legs of the skeleton competition. noelle pipe and katie uhlaender start the day in second and fourth. meanwhile, american speed skaters are looking for answers after a string of disappointing performances. "the wall street journal" reports they may be slowed down by a design flaw in their high-tech under armour racing suits. the company says it's working with the team to improve performance. kirit radia, abc news, moscow. all right. one more note about those much hyped suits, reports now say u.s. officials are trying to get permission for skaters to use older under armour suits that they wore in a previous competition. all right, and here's the current medals count. the u.s. moving up the table thanks to that medals sweep. germany has won the most gold so far. >> all right, it's weather not even cupid could love. how mother nature is putting a damper on valentine's day. and under arrest. stunning new developments in the case of a deadly mail bomb. we're learning how the suspect knew the victims. plus, road to recovery. a teenager who fell thousands of

a bit more practical than fashionable. starbucks is celebrating valentine's day by offering free lattes from 2:00 until 5:00 this afternoon. the offer is buy one latte, maybe for your sweetie, then you get one free. >> sounds like a plan. >> uh-huh. all right, a problem with older general motors compact cars being blamed for at least six deaths. gm recalling now nearly 780,000 cars because a faulty ignition switch shuts down the engine when jarred. the models are chevy co-balls, pontiac g5s, and they were made between 2005 and 2007. gm says in all cases the problem happened when the cars were driven at high speeds off-road and weren't made for that. well, with the long holiday weekend you should have plenty of time to check out what's new at the box office. >> "robocop" is a remake of the 1980s classic, but with a new plot and a new robo suit. also "about last night" is another '80s remake set in l.a. instead of chicago and with an all black cast. neither one is expected to outgross last weekend's smash hit, though, of course, "the

arson in 1993 for which he served four years on probation, but for this police don't have a motive. neighbors are shocked and shaken. >> we felt like that this was a place that nothing would ever happen. >> friends describe jon and marion setzer, a retired lawyer and dental hygienist, as loved and respected by neighbors, friends and former colleagues. the search for a texas woman missing for a month has come to a painful end. leanne bearden found in a wooded area outside san antonio not far from where she disappeared. bearden and her husband had just returned from a two-year trip around the world. she left her in-laws' house to go for a walk. investigators say there are no signs of foul play. they're not ruling out suicide. we're hearing new details this morning about that 16-year-old texas girl who plummeted 3,000 feet to the ground in oklahoma. it was a skydiving accident. well, speaking from a wheelchair at baylor university medical center in dallas, makenzie wethington says that her rush of excitement quickly turned to

panic when the parachute malfunctioned, then it turned to terror as she realized she was living every skydiver's worst nightmare. >> i started kicking my feet like i was taught in the class, and i looked up, and it still wasn't fixing, so i tried to pull the toggles apart, and i just was not strong enough to fight off the wind, so i just remember screaming, and then i blacked out, and i don't remember anything after that. >> makenzie says, yeah, she doesn't remember hitting the ground. this morning she's on the road to full recovery and inspired by the medical professionals who fixed up, she says she now plans on being a trauma surgeon. this morning, the acting community is mourning the death of the man best known for his role as papa walton. >> ralph waite played the patriarch for ten seasons on the popular series "the waltons."

besides a slew of other roles, he dabbled in politics unsuccessfully running for congress three times. ralph waite died at his home in palm desert. he was 85 years old. another classic, general motors says it's taking its -- it's going to help restore those eight fallen classic corvettes we showed you yesterday. >> yesterday morning a 30-foot sinkhole opened up right under the national corvette museum in kentucky swallowing up those sports driving machines. >> gm says it's going to restore many of the corvettes, and it'll do as much as they can to make them look just as good as new. okay, well, thanks to cell phone cameras and youtube, it is easy to prove you're not crazy when you claim to see things falling from the sky. a man in maine came upon this fireball in broad daylight claiming it was unlike anything he had ever seen. well, an astronger says he can't rule out a meteor, but it is more likely space junk. >> what a sight. >> uh-huh. all right. the nba has reached its all-star break. the slam dunk competition is tomorrow night in new orleans and the all-star game sunday. >> the last game of the season's first half was last night, and we get the highlights from our guys at espn. good morning, america.

60's bay and inland. >> good morning, everyone. we will see what is happening across our roads if we start with our drive time traffic 580 address to dublin you can see how clear it is at 23 minutes westbound direction. highway 4 antioch to concord is found minutes and 101 southbound from san rafael to san francisco is 18 minutes. there is fog so watch out and use the low beams. the san mateo bridge from hayward to foster city is much better and not the heavy fog we had at the maze. be prepared, it could roll through. >> developing news: a veteran san josehter is under arrest held without bail this morning accused of a slow of crimes ranging from drug dealing to crimes against children. here is our reporter with that story we first reported last night on abc7 news.

>> undercover ats from the specialized enforcement task force took long time firefighter, mario cuestas, into custody. the 53-year-old is accused of selling methamphetamine to high school students. mario cuestas will be charged with committing sexual acts with children. >> as a father there are young people involved. it is very disturbing. very concerning. >> san jose fire union president admits he is shocked bit allegations. he has known mario cuestas for years. the task force which includes the department of justice has been investigating mario cuestas for months. a spokesman said that a tip led them to cuestas who allegedly sold drugs to undercover agents. they seized and check the work computer while he was taken away to san jose headquarters for questioning. >> we are held to a higher standard and when there is any
