that's today, but i've got maybe a gift, maybe not a gift for you because more snow is coming. it starts in des moines and all the way through central illinois. cincinnati gets a little but tomorrow it comes right back to the mid-atlantic and northeast. there's some of the snow totals you can expect and philadelphia now in their fifth snowiest winter is where we pick up the story with linzie janis this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, ginger. we watched dozens of people sledding down these famous steps last night. this is what's left of one of those sleds. the steps now a giant sheet of ice. it has been a brutal and record-breaking winter for philadelphia just like so many other cities. this morning, millions along the east coast crippled by ice and heaps of snow. the storm already responsible for at least 20 deaths. in new york city overnight, thunder sleet. this time-lapsed video shows the manhattan skyline lighting up.

a spirit airlines flight struck by lightning while it landed in atlantic city. heavy snow, the cause of at least four roofs collapsing in new york and new jersey like this tennis center on long island. in new jersey, more damage at this residence in carnie and at a shopping center in monroe and at this verizon center in jersey city, three people treated for injuries after part of the roof caved in. in philadelphia, the storm reaching historic proportions. >> this winter storm has now broken a 130-year record for the most six-inch-plus storms in a season. >> reporter: down south more misery. roof of this virginia gas station came crashing down. cars stranded on the roads, completely buried. only their mirrors visible. now icy conditions are bringing down trees and power lines. >> every time you hear something hit the roof you come out and run. >> leaving 500,000 to brave the cold without power.

well, these storms have caused 14,000 cancellations, flight cancellations so far this week. that includes another 1,000 so far this morning. george? >> okay, linzie, thank you. it's stirring up a political storm. mayor bill de blasio causing heat keeping schools open and he's fighting back and dan harris joins us with more from central park. >> reporter: good morning to you. it is a proverbial winter wonderland out here this morning. it is not, however, a congenial atmosphere for bill de blasio. he has angered parents and popular meteorologists. new york's new mayor, bill de blasio, was already on thin ice as it were caught on camera eating pizza with a fork and knife then came the nor'easter. first he told the kids to go to school. >> i think it's the least bit

dangerous, they should call it. >> reporter: which provokes a blizzard, an avalanche pick your snow metaphor of anger with online commenters calling him an idiot and accusing him of endangering children. the mayor stood by his decision. >> given the information we had it was right to go ahead with school. >> reporter: but then making matters worse, in the middle of the weather mess, his new schools chief said this. >> by the way, just coming down here it has totally stopped snowing. it is absolutely a beautiful day out there right now. >> reporter: then to top it all off mayor de blasio seemed to blame the forecasters. >> we had accumulation of roughly 5 to 8 inches by the end of the morning rush hour and that was heavier and faster than the weather service had predicted last night. >> reporter: meteorologists shot right back. al roker chiming in on twitter, long range de blasio forecast, one term. it was all reminiscent of the kerfuffle in atlanta that stranded thousands on the road during rush hour when the governor also criticize the meteorologists. >> most of the forecast

anticipated that the city of atlanta would only have a mild dusting. >> reporter: the president of the american meteorological society hit back on his blog saying "the buses had a tough time getting kids home, but meteorologists should not be thrown under the bus." the governor of atlanta apologized after that weather mess. no apology from mayor bill de blasio, at least not yet. george, back to you. >> dan, thanks. ginger, we saw in dan's piece deja vu all over blaming the forecasters. >> it's amazing to me but i would like to show it because the national weather service at 5:00 p.m. put up this map. 10 to 14 inches is what they have for manhattan and the timing said that the morning commute would be treacherous. >> you got it down to the hour when things would be happening. >> we have those great futurecasts that can do that so that's it. that's why -- >> don't blame ginger. >> this week thursday every schoolkid in the tri-state was

pikus-pace fresh out of retirement sliding head first into the second fastest time of the night. she and teammate katy ulander spotting that bald eagle helmet going for gold later today. moments ago team usa's golden boys, alpine rivals bode miller and ted ligety, taking to the slopes but no luck in the super combined trying to make up for disappointment in the downhill earlier this morning. and we just found out that no medal for bode or ted ligety. that's the latest update and also another big story today. everyone has been surprised about the poor showing of the american speed skaters shut out in sochi, for example, shani davis was projected to win the 1,000-meter but posted one of the slowest times in his career. some say the high-tech speeding suits are to blame made from under armour. they have vents in the back and

may be causing drag. so u.s. speed skating is trying to get approval to change the suits to what they wore during the world cup and some sending them back to the seamstress to have them modified. six more speed skating events to come so we'll see what happens. >> it does comes down to something as simple as that makes all the difference. >> yes. that ski news really something. >> it was so dramatic. that's why we have sasha cohen with us. she won the silver medal in figure skating and you were talking about this yesterday. a friend of yours, plyushchenko, and the fact that he had to withdraw was so disappointed but he's been battling injury, hasn't he? >> he has been to four olympic games. i have been competing with him at the senior level since 15 years ago. and for an athlete to maintain their body, their character, the work ethic, that competitive drive for 15 years is incredible in itself and to see him come back and win the team event was exceptional.

so sad to have to see him withdraw but you could just see the pain, the fact that his leg was giving out on him and he didn't want to go out and have a disappointing skate to end his olympic career on. >> the americans jeremy abbott and jason brown, first of all, jeremy, goes down like he did but he got back up and finished so strong in the program. >> when i watched jeremy abbott my heart sank and you saw him fall and saw maybe he was hurt but you also saw disappointment. you just saw his whole bubble just deflate. and i didn't think he was going to get up and, you know, after five seconds when he crawled back up, he had the crowd cheering him on and went for it. nothing harder than after a fall like that finishing. >> you have to give him credit. keep the eye on the japanese star and breaking 100 points like that. never seen that in the short program. >> he was phenomenal and makes it look so easy. has the most difficult moves but they're flawlessly landed. he's young, doesn't have nerves

and he's going to be the one to watch tomorrow night or tonight. >> yeah, tonight. we'll see what happens, sasha, thanks so much. >> glad that plyushchenko could get back on the ice for the ovation before the home folks. that was a nice end. how about news? we'll begin with a very big development in that mysterious mail bombing in tennessee that killed a retired lawyer and his wife. the couple's son-in-law 49-year-old richard park you see him here has been charged with first degree murder. though police have yet to identify a motive. the bomb was delivered to jon and marian setzer's front porch. friends and neighbors described the couple as generous and well respected. a federal judge ruled that virginia's ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. it is the fourth state in recent weeks to strike down gay marriage bans, but with several appeals still pending, the issue likely will not be settled until a ruling from the supreme court. also breaking overnight, video just in, in fact, from a deadly volcano eruption on the

island of java, indonesia. is 00100,000 people had to be evacuated. as you can see leer ash raining down collapsing roofs and killing at least two people. and a medical advance that could shorten the time patients have to wait for a lung transplant. researchers in texas have successfully grown human lungs in a lab for the first time using stem cells from other lungs. they could then be ready for transplants within a decade. and the actor best known for his role as papa walton has died. ralph waite played the family patriarch on "the waltons" for its entire ten-season run. besides acting he dabbled in politics and ran for congress three times. ralph waite for those of us of a certain vintage, all of our father, he was 85 years old. and new details about the fireball you see here caught on video. the sky over maine, astronomers

this morning, though, it's what's inside that's causing a lot of buzz. why is barbie one of the models and is it sending the wrong message? >> i was puzzled by this. we'll talk about that later. right now we begin with the north carolina trial of a woman accused of killing the mother of her stepchildren. amanda hayes denies the charge saying her husband was the sole killer and abc's mara schiavocampo has more. >> reporter: taking the stand for the first time this week amanda hayes' defense was simple. her husband made her do it. the 41-year-old wife and mother is charged with first degree murder, accused of helping husband grant hayes kill 27-year-old laura ackerson, the mother of his two young children during a bitter custody battle. prosecutors say she also helped grant dispose of the body and that she's now simply pretending to be a victim pointing out she had years of professional acting training. >> that involved learning your lines and playing a role and

presenting it in a conventional way. >> yes, ma'am, that is correct. >> reporter: but speaking in her own defense hayes paints a very different picture, that of a terrified wife who was still recovering from a cesarean section when the crime took place. soft-spoken on the stand hayes who has pleaded not guilty says she didn't even know ackerson was dead until her husband forced her to help cover up the crime almost a week after the murder. she says she wanted to get help but grant hayes threatened her. >> i was freaking out. this was not the time for me to start challenging him. >> reporter: the defense argues amanda hayes also worried if she didn't cooperate, her husband of 14 months might hurt her two young stepsons and their infant daughter. >> whenever we were driving lilly was crying. he told me if i didn't shut her up he was going to throw her out of the car. >> reporter: he's already been convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. it will be up to the jury to

decide if amanda hayes was his accomplice or another victim. for "good morning america," mara schiavocampo, abc news, new york. >> dan abrams, our chief legal affairs anchor joins, as always. a couple strikes, the husband convicted already and tells her sister she was part of this. >> very different case against her than against her sister. fascinating she's taking the stand in her own defense here. her defense is that, yes, i was there in the fight leading up to what became the murder. actually she admits she may have been the cause of the fight. but she says he then throws her out of the house, says get out of the house with the kids. she says we want to talk alone. he and the victim. she says she comes back and he says everything is okay. that's when she says the murder occurred so she didn't know about it, she says. she only learns that there is a body in the truck that she is driving, she says, much later on. so she's claiming she had nothing to do with either the murder and she says she was not a willing accessory after the fact because she says she was threatened.

her testimony becomes crucial and that's why that question about her being an actress in the past is so important, because if the jurors believe her, she could absolutely get acquitted. >> she did have a very sympathetic demeanor. >> she did, she did but there are some facts that work against her, number one she allegedly confessed to her sister. number two there is sideline video of her buying cleaning supplies like bleach, et cetera. number three, there is a diary of the victim that talks about her and how much she despises how much the relationship between the two of them. there is a lot of circumstantial evidence but this is one of those cases where the reasonable doubt standard becomes so important. >> okay. dan abrams, thanks very much. >> dan, you'll be back. the jury is out a little bit later. >> and i have a red tie. just letting you know. i don't want to give too much of a tease. not too much of a tease. >> wardrobe change. you've been warned. now to that stunning hidden camera experiment every parent will want to see. it shows how people react when a child is being kidnapped right in front of them.

so -- how many try to do the right thing? abc's abbie boudreau has the story. >> reporter: watch this young boy, the man you see with him appears to be a stranger trying to coax the boy to go with him. >> i have candy, i have tv. >> reporter: watch what happens when the boy tries to get help. >> this man in a jacket -- shaking the stranger's hand. thankfully this kidnapping is actually a staged scene. the boy and the alleged stranger are in on it but the people they encounter are not and this morning, the hidden camera experiment is going viral with nearly 2 million views in just a few days. yousef erakat filmed it posing as the kidnapper. he wanted to find out what would real people do if they saw this happening. do you think this video may have gone too far. >> i don't think so at all. if no one pushes it far how will we get change. >> reporter: why did you want to do it?
