good morning, america. this morning, endless winter. here comes a new storm. there are blizzard warnings right now, and they arrive on the heels of the nor'easter that made this highway look like a demolition derby, caused thousands of flights to be canceled and roofs to cave in. breaking overnight, killer wave. a wall of water smashes across a cruise ship killing at least one person, injuring others. where it happened and where the ship is headed now. giant jackpot. tonight's powerball drawing is worth 330 million bucks. this morning a look at the most outrageous things you can do with your money if your numbers come up. and olympic up and down. men falling all through figure skating. >> oh, no. >> and u.s. speed skaters

stumble and switch out of their high-tech suits while a trio of fun-loving americans make history sweeping the first ever slopestyle event. good morning, everybody. remember a couple of weeks ago when the groundhog said we had six more weeks of winter, he was right, but i believe he was insufficiently specific. he failed to mention that the rest of this winter would be relentlessly and unacceptably snowy and brutal. >> it has been brutal. airports across the country virtually at a standstill with so many couples trying to get away for a valentine's weekend. there are some people making the best of it. one romantic couple in virginia made this snow heart for valentine's day. and look at this shot. a snowbank against new york's famous skyline and, of course, there's central park glistening as well. it looks so beautiful in the pictures. >> pictures. >> when you're out there --

>> yeah, hopping over slush to get there is less amusing. this guy is snowboarding down the street. that looks like a don't try that at home. we used to call this skitching back in the day. he's attached to the back of a car. i never did it, of course. despite the fun and the beauty which i will only grudgingly admit, many of us are ready for this thing to end. in fact, we started a countdown clock. there it is right there. 32 days until spring. >> 32 long day. just over a month to go, and now there's a flesh blizzard on the way. it comes as tens of millions of americans are digging out of this week's nor'easter, and abc's linzie janis is on the story from central park in a balmy new york city. it's, what, 40 degrees out? >> reporter: 40 degrees, bianna, and no snow yet, but we're told it is on the way, and that's why the race is on to clear the existing ice and snow. between battering winter storms, this morning nearly a third of the nation is cleaning up. >> i hope we don't get no more. >> reporter: and clearing out.

heavy snow causing roofs to cave in, leaving some homeless. the average home can withstand about two feet of snow before the roof becomes susceptible to collapse. parts of the northeast have gotten much more than that this week. as far south as north carolina, police calling in tow trucks to save stranded motorists. this 7-year-old boy got lost in tennessee and survived the night in freezing temperatures by cuddling his dog cocoa for 14 hours. >> i didn't keep warm. the dog kept warm. >> reporter: look at this truck. the large hole right in front of the driver's windshield was because of falling ice, and this may look like an explorer atop a mountain, but really it's workers clearing gigantic chunks of ice and snow from a vermont airport runway. and this man taking advantage of the sloppy conditions in new york city snowboarding down the street. ♪ much of the country was hit hard.

the roads outside philadelphia so slick causing this five-mile-long pileup. more than a hundred cars, dozens injured. >> around that corner right there, and all of a sudden, the sun is blinding, and i missed the car in front of me by that much. >> reporter: and those drivers in pennsylvania told us they were fooled by the sun and also by what looked like a clear road. in fact, it was a sheet of ice. a good reminder to stay cautious no matter how tired and frustrated we are all growing with this winter. dan, 32 days, 32 days, i love that countdown clock. >> that's right. yes. we're going to put it up for the rest of the show. as we said, there are blizzard warnings up right now for parts of the northeast. for more on this new storm, let's get it over to bill kelly, the bearer of bad news, chief meteorologist for wsyx in columbus, and we're very glad to have you here. >> isn't hope a wonderful thing. talk about those blizzards -- excuse me, the

spring starting soon but not today, folks. we have winter weather advisories posted all the way from north carolina up into new england and you mentioned that blizzard warning. here it is, it's for eastern sections of massachusetts there where it's going to be blowing, the snow is going to be blinding. here is the current radar. you folks in washington, d.c., you're probably going to stay rain. philly, a little snow. we're expecting a little bit of snow in the new york area over the next couple of hours. but where it is going to affect the most of you is up here into new england. i mean this storm is going to pack a punch. let me run the timing by for you. here's the morning time frame. we get into the afternoon, it pulls off into the ocean and look at this. look at all the snow that is going to be around in these areas. we're talking in some spots 6 to 12 inches of snow. bianna. >> a tough weekend for folks in the northeast. bill, our thanks to you. well, we're going to turn now to the pleasure cruise turned deadly for passengers enjoying a trip at sea. their six-week adventure to the amazon and the caribbean ending in horror when a wall of water came smashing into the ship. abc's jeffrey kofman has more from our london bureau. >> reporter: bianna, while so much of north america is in deep snow and deep freeze, here in the uk we're being battered by

relentless waifs and high winds. coastal communities south and west of london are being devastated by floods, and huge waves are causing havoc at sea. overnight tragedy hitting the high seas when a massive wave crashed into a british cruise ship killing a man on board. the 288-foot "marco polo" was on its way home to the uk from a 42-day trip when it was struck by a wave while passing through the english channel. rushing water shattered a window on board injuring several of the ship's 735 passengers. two had to be air-lifted off the ship to nearby hospitals where one, an 85-year-old man, was later pronounced dead. >> a rogue wave has a tremendous amount of power in it. it's not usual for a rogue wave to do something like that. it'll shatter the glass, and it will hurt people inside. the wave is part of the same blast of vicious weather that's left tens of thousands here in the uk without power. >> we are doing everything we can. we are fighting on every front. >> reporter: last night the

cruise ship's operator tweeted "our thoughts are with the family of the passenger who has sadly died." even with their massive size, cruise ships can still feel the wrath of the ocean. in 2010 this ship, the "clelia 2" was disabled off the coast of south america by 30-foot waves. >> i just thought she is a great ship. i hope she holds together. >> it happens. rogue waves do hit, and when you're in rough seas, you have to take precautions. >> reporter: this is not just a little bit of that british bad weather. more than 20 communities have severe flood alerts, more than 140,000 homes are without power and more rain is on the way. dan? >> a nightmare in the uk and on the high seas. jeffrey, thank you. let's switch gears now and get to the olympics. week two now of the winter games officially under way, and there's the medal count on our sochi scoreboard. we are tied with norway for first place with the netherlands, russia and germany right behind.

abc's amy robach is tracking all the action at our "gma" olympic headquarters in sochi. amy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dan, and, yes, the latest medal for the united states, a silver in the women's skeleton, plus the controversy over the u.s. speed skaters' request to change their suits halfway through the competition and then, of course, last night's thrills and spills of men's figure skating. during the men's freeskate figure skating final, a few ups. >> triple toe. triple toe. >> reporter: and some major downs, a couple of stumbles may have cost patrick chan the top spot and a shot at breaking the so-called canadian curse and yuzuru hanyu of japan may have lost his balance here. >> oh, no. >> reporter: but he was able to hang on to his gold medal in the end. next up, wardrobe malfunctions? with six races under their belts, the u.s. speed skaters have made it to the halfway point but not one medal in hand. now some are hoping new suits will pick up the slack. >> to walk away and see they're seventh place, they're eighth place, so you keep trying to

cohen. good morning to you. what a night that was. i mean none of the final six skaters had a clean program. have you ever seen anything like that? >> there are moments where the ice seems jinxed and no one can quite put out that perfect skate, and it's difficult. you know, during my olympics, it was like that. everyone was all over the ice wiping the ice, but still, yuzuru is the first men's olympic champion from japan, so that's iconic. that's historic and it was very exciting. >> it's so great for his hometown. so what you're saying, it may be a technical issue and not just nerves that caused so many to spill and fall. >> i'm not saying it's necessarily a technical issue, just sometimes, you know, it just -- everyone seems to have a little bit of an issue, and there's times where everyone just punches out a perfect performance, and there's just like something you can't ascribe that to. it's just in the air. >> and, of course, a lot of people were hoping jason brown, the american, would have a perfect performance. he actually did not. he came in ninth place. so much was riding on him and he's such a storied figure, as well. it just didn't turn out to be his night. >> he has such a future in front

7:14 am
the magnitude 4.1 quake was centered seven miles west of edgefield, south carolina. friday's jolt was felt as far away as atlanta, georgia and as far north as hickory, north carolina. it blew up social media. but no damages -- it blew up on social media, it didn't social media up. no injuries reported during that quake. and president obama opened up the checkbook during this visit. he met with some california farmers and promised $183 million in federal aid to deal -- try to deal with the epic drought tripling that state. he also proposed a $1 billion fund package in his upcoming budget to deal with climate change. he also met with jordan's king abdullah and said he would ask congress for $1 billion in loan guarantees to help jordan deal with syrian refugees. and actress ellen page, best known for her performances in the movies "juno" and "inception" has come out saying publicly that she is gay. it was an emotional moment.
