good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, february 16th. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen on our roof deck. good morning. >> good morning to you. hi, carolyn. good morning, everyone. we are looking at some damp pavement outside and the showers ending in the south bay. here's a look at live doppler 7hd. last hour we is had a few showers around morgan hill and mountain hill and right now it's moving into the hills. the cloud cover will continue to clear and we will look for a sunny middle of the morning for you. for the rest of the day we have sunshine returning to the entire bay area. so this morning it's in the 40s in the north bay. elsewhere 50s and by the

afternoon we are looking at upper 50s at the coast to the lower 60s. elsewhere mid-60s around the bay and inland today. so looks like a pretty nice afternoon. in fact, when we look at the seven-day outlook, you might mistake it for spring. >> thank you, lisa. police are investigating after a burned body was found near a park. it was discovered just after 10:00 last night on skyline boulevard near the gate of the redwood regional park. no word on this person's identity. east bay regional marks police are investigating. we are learning more about a firefighter arrested lift week. 53-year-old mario cuesta was arrested thursday. he's accused of multiple crimes, including selling meth to kids. he was also a volunteer at a south bay church. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian spoke with some of the

parishioners and has the latest. >> at last saturday evening mass they read the bulletin and they quickly found this insert. drafted by the san jose diocese. stating that a background check was done on mario before he started volunteering in 2012. and that nothing had been flagged. >> when it's that close, you know, we just have to play. >> he worked in the ministry of music and sang regularly at saint leo's the great. thursday agents from a special task force, which included the department of justice, arrested him. they seized his computer and searched his home. the 53-year-old is accused of selling drugs to my school students and having sex with a

17-year-old. >> god will gunning him. we can just play for him. >> he was a community outreach hospital for the fire department and worked with neighborhood associations, schools and church groups. >> it's very unfortunate being a firefighter because lots of young people, especially young men and women want to be firefighters. >> mario cuesta will make his first court appearance on tuesday. lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. muni has resumed normal service after being shut down yesterday following a fatal accident. a man was hit and killed by a train at the powell street station. abc7 news reporter tells us it tied up some riders headed to the chinese new year's parade on market street. >> reporter: muni subway service was restored after the body was removed from the tracks after 6:00 p.m. they said a man was hit by the trip as it approached the powell

station. we talked with this minnesota and three other people off-camera who said they were friends of the man who died. they told us he was homeless and had stored a backpack under the muni platform and got hit trying to retrieve it. the director couldn't confirm details but he said it's tough to keep an eye on every nook and ran any in the station. >> because of fire laws and security, some of the doors and rooms down here must remain open so occasionally we do find people who are where they should want be. >> they try to clean out anything they find as quickly as possible. it's especially bad when it rains. police shut down four muni stations just after 4:00 p.m. which is about the same time lanes on market street started getting diverted in preparation for the chinese new year's parade. that made for a confusing situation for riders.

>> we are trying to get to castro but we aren't sure how to get there bus we aren't familiar with the area. >> did they tell you how to get there? >> not really. i just would like a direct answer. >> and a station agent aboard the train was hurt when it came to an adisrupt stop and was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. abc7 news. new statistics from state health department shows 243 people have died in virginia from the flu this season. authorities are investigating an addition until 41 deaths that are possibly flu related. herehere in the bay area 51 deas have been reported. santa clara county tops the list with 14. authorities say it is still not too late to get a flu shot. a growing list of stores is connected to a massive beef recall linked to a petaluma slaughterhouse. one is a market in napa. it is one that could have received tainted beef from

rancho feeding corporation. the meat manager questions the recall itself. >> it goes from january 1st through january 1, 2014 to january 1, 2013. that's a year. 99% of the people have already eaten that, it's gone. i mean, what's the whole point? >> the usda said the petaluma slaughterhouse rancho is recalling 8 million pounds of meat products processed diseased and unhealthy animals without a full federal inspection. a washington company is recalling nearly 227 pounds of processed egg product because of possible salmonella con testimony nation. it was made between february of last year and this year. it was shipped to military installations nationwide. it carried the brand name ova easy. prosecutors say they will try again after a jury failed to

convict a man of murder in a so-called loud music trial. michael dunn was convicted of three counts of attempted murder. he shot into a core outside a gas station back in 2012 after an argument over loud music coming from the car. dunn was charged with fatally shooting 17-year-old jordan davis of marietta, georgia. he claimed he acted in tell are self-defense and a mistrial was declared on the first-degree murder charge >> the homeless in san francisco can now access the city's shelters just by dialing three numbers. it's new system where dialing 311 reserves a spot. the reservation is for three months at any one of those city's homeless shelters. bart is hiring a consultant to figure out why the labor talks were so extensive and expensive. the last round of talks led to two strikes, a contract dispute and cost bart more than

$8 million. the cost includes consulting fees. they believe the lead negotiator could have been responsible. his contract was not renewed after he renewed a division of giving workers 6 weeks a year of paid family leave. it is the year of horse and hundreds of thousands lined the streets of san francisco last night. it was the annual chinese new year's parade. went rest ton market street and down post expended in chinatown on kearney street. more than 100 entrants took part in the procession. hundreds of floats, marching bands and lyon dancer and city officials and miss chinatown usa. some have been coming for decades. >> never gets boring. it's the best. plus at night.

he has been questioned by police and released. rescuers plan to resume searching this morning for two skiers who are missing after an avalanche in colorado. it happened yesterday evening in lake county. officials say seven people were on top of the ridge is that activated the avalanche. three people suffered broken bones and two walked away unharmed. two others are unaccounted for. rescue crews say they have to figure out the safest way to clear the area. snow and ice storms continue to pummel the east coast as a record drought continues in california. coming up on this week abc news senior meteorologist ginger sze and a panel of experts examine the consequences and costs of the extreme weather impacting the country. you can catch it right here at abc7 at 8:00 this morning. yes, the east coast is digging out once again after another storm.

nearly 10 inches of snow fell in parts of massachusetts and rode island. officials are asking people to stay off the roads this morning. here's the abc news reporter. >> reporter: the latest storm comes with renewed fierce over the damage that all that piled-up snow can do to buildings. the afternoon home can stand about two feet of snow before the roof becomes susceptible to collapse. that's more than when some parts of the northeast have gotten. much more than that. this even-year-old didn't need a roof over his head to survive the freezing cold. his best friend cocoa kept him warm for the 14 hours. >> i have the dog. >> the fast and furious snowstorms have depleted or exhausted the supply of road salt in the areas. >> under these conditions it really isn't possible for us to keep the roads clear and safe given the rate of snowfall. >> the state of connecticut has just taken delivery of

the website. the company said it will release a software update in about three weeks that will allow users to redrove data straight from third cellular network, as well. i am missing lisa argen, but you don't have to. she is up on the roof to tell us what is going on weather-wise. >> hi there, carolyn. it's a little cool this morning. the cold front pushed through and skies cleared. temperatures are dropping. ten degrees cooler than we were yesterday at this time in the north bay. live doppler 7hd shows some of the sprinkle activity heading into the diablo range. a few showers in the south bay. right now they are really wrapping up. we are looking at the cloudy skies and the milder conditions in the south bay and the north bay is a little cooler. 52 in san jose with 53 in los gatos, half moon bay at 50, as well as oakland. and the city, we are sitting at 51 degrees. emeryville you see the wet streets. we had about a tenth of an inch

in parts of the east bay. down to 46 already in petaluma. livermore sitting at 52 degrees. we are looking at the cooler numbers in the north bay. seven degrees cooler in santa rosa with 4 degrees cooler out by the delta. clear sky there. and in livermore a little milder due to the insulation of the cloud deck. so as we go through the morning hours everyone will clear and we will get rid of the shower activity in the south bay and that will provide for more sunshine throughout the entire day today. in fact, into the holiday tomorrow. president's day looking like another dry afternoon. and temperatures coming up to average readings, which would bring plenty of 60s around the bay. so the front moved through yesterday. overall the storm track is going to stay to the north except for one caveat, which we have in the north bay come tuesday. here's the forecast as we go through tomorrow. dry. a few clouds around on tuesday.

but by tuesday night into wednesday, cloverdale, ukiah, you could see a few light showers. everyone else will remain cloudy and high pressure builds back in for the rest of the upcoming work week unfortunately. so with a few snow showers in the sierra nevada, we are looking up to two inches in tahoe right now. flakes with 38 degrees at the tahoe really airport. 55 in sacramento with high surf advisory in los angeles. 76 there. and temperatures from san francisco to the coast in the upper 50s. elsewhere, though, we will warm through the low 60s. 64 in livermore, morgan hill and santa cruz. the accuweather seven-day forecast, sunny skies today. a few clouds parting the south bay right now. more sunshine for the day off tomorrow. and then increasing clouds, a slight chance of showers in the north bay. tuesday back to partly cloudy skies, wednesday, thursday, and the temperatures really begin to

>> mountain view-based google wants to make the internet 1,000 times faster then the average speed currently in the u.s. it's working on 10 gigabyte internet connections. the current speed is much slower, 9 megabits. they will have to install fiber cables all over the country and that will cost about $11 billion to complete. google would like to start the project in three years. the freeway shut down. that's in l.a. but so far it

>> welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather. meteorologist lisa argen is checking out the elements from our roof deck. good morning, lisa. >> good morning, carolyn. temperatures are dropping as the skies clear. so a little cool out here, but certainly cooler in the north bay where they have been clear for the past three or four hours. numbers in the mid-40s for santa rosa, 48 napa, 50 on the coast with low 50s in fremont, mountain view and san jose. still a few clouds in the south bay. we've had showers from mountain view to morgan hill. the next couple of hours the skies continue to clear and we will see the front dissipate. so the forecast for your sunday calls for sunny conditions. numbers will be cool at the coast from the upper 50s there and we will see some low 60s around the bay. northwest winds keeping it cool throughout the day today. but the weak weather system is

gone. still providing a few snow showers in the sierra nevada. we will talk about that and have your full weather forecast, which includes the next seven days in a few minutes. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. a cruiseliner hit by hurricane force winds giant waves in the english channel has returned to their home court. a passenger died after a huge wave hit the liner called the marco polo. a second passenger has been treated for nonlife-threatening injuries after being airlifted from the cruise ship. 14 more passengers suffered minor injuries. two people have died as strong winds, heavy winds and huge waves battered southern britain this weekend. the latest round of bad weather is aggravating problems caused by widespread roads and flooding. 9 rail networks have been disrupted with hundreds of uprooted trees blocking the path. even the royals have pitched in. prince william and his brother

harry helping soldiers position sand bigs to protect a community near windsor castle. now to another danger. we all know the risk of driving while texting but the danger of distraction are not limited to cars. this morning a woman is recovering after falling on to the tracks in front of an oncoming subway train in new york city. and police believe she was texting. here's abc news reporter rhino rhino -- -- this train dropped, but not before hitting a woman. this video shot by an abc producer as first responders rush to her rescue. according to police the police say she was using her phone and texting. others say she may have been feeling diszy and fell on to the tracks. authorities failed to comment. but as they tried to piece together what really happened,

it to could highlight what police say is a growing danger, texting while walking. pedestrian aren't watching while they are walking. >> the number of phone injuries has doubled in the last years, even exceeding the injuries among drivers using mobile phones. another study shows how hard it is to walk in a straight line while focused only on your phone. for us who claim we can do both. some said that might be a stretch. >> you were texting. do you feel like you are a little distracted when you do it? >> definitely. >> president obama is continuing his visit to our state this morning, combining business with pleasure. yesterday he played golf at the sunny lands retreat in rancho mirage. the president also signed two pieces of legislation. one lifts the federal debt limit and the other restores costs of

living benefits for military retirees. on friday president obama announced a multimillion-dollar initiative to help california farmers affected by the drought. he returns to washington tomorrow. people focused on raising oakland's minimum wage are gathering signatures to try to put the issue on the ballot. yesterday the lift-up-oakland coalition was at the fruitvale part station. they told potential supporters they said the eight dollars minimum wage just doesn't cut it. >> it's just not enough for a working family to survive on. they can't make ends meet and they can't food food on the table or clothes on their kids' back. 12:25 is a good start for getting toward self sustainability for families so they can take care of themselves and build our local economy. >> a large part of the argument to raise the minimum wage is that it will lead to more local spending and that spending leads

to more taxes paid which benefits local schools and makes streets safer. there are growing concerns this morning for treasure island residents after more radioactive material was found on the island last month. the san francisco chronicle reports the dime-size fragment was detected during radiation scans in november, but not dug up by the navy until the end of last month. it's the latest radio logical discovery by officials in charge of cleaning up pressure island. while they say the radiation and other toxics don't pose a health risk, residents disagree and say they have not been kept up-to-date on the cleanup efforts on the former military base. >> a mobile home in redding packed with explosives could be incinerated as early as today. sheriff's deputies have now doubled the evacuation area around the home to 2,000 feet. the evacuation began ten days ago and residents want to go back home.

>> we are hoping it will be here if we get to come back. >> i'm just waiting for a signal that says we can all return to our lives. >> the owner of the house blew off his left hand and broke his right arm after an explosion. his house is jammed with over 60 pounds of chemicals, gunpowderrer and other materials. the material is so volatile, according to authorities, the only way to remove the materials is to burn that house to the ground. new this morning, palo alto tops the list of bay area jurisdictions that paid the most in healthcare bills for former elected officials in 2012. according to our media partner, the marijuana independent journal, palo alto paid more than $115,000 for insurance in 2012. san rafael came in second at more than $102,000. the west contra county school district and the water district rounding out the top five.

according to the report, 200 former officials at more than 65 agencies in the bay area are receiving taxpayer funded medical coverage for life. there's some good news for wine lovers this year. california agriculture officials say last year was a record harvest of wine grapes. growers brought in a bumper crop thanks to expanded acreage and overall favorable weather. that means there should be plenty of bar again bottle on grocery store shelves. wine grapes are one of california's top commodities and topped more than $3 billion last year. despite recent rain we are still facing a major drought and one bay area community is taking emergency and controversial measures to help. the press democrat reports the heelsburg city council has approved letting grape growers and ranchers use highly recycled

>> new research suggests crocodiles can climb trees. university of tennessee's zoologist heard about the phenomenon and decided to investigate. they have taken reports from all over the world and have seen the crocs in the crease themselves. they never actually witnessed how the crocodiles got up there but believe they worked their way up through branches. the zoologist said the crocs like the height because it helps them find the sun above the shade and the trees can also help them keep an eye out for other predators. we had a little drizzle overnight. what is in store? lisa has the answer. >> we are looking at partly cloudy skies this morning. rain has ended and more sunshine is on the way from the san mateo
