shop at choosenissan.com. ♪ >> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, february 16th. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen on our roof deck. hi, carolyn. good morning to you. a few leftover showers in the hills around hollister this morning. elsewhere skies are clearing. east of 101 a few areas of light rain. you will be the last to clear. throughout the next several hours notice cloud cover hanging on in parts of the santa clara valley, but then its back to full sunshine with temperatures coming up a few degrees, especially in the north bay. the coast will be typically cool in the upper 50s with low to

mid-60s elsewhere around the bay. so this begins a spring-like feel to the forecast. we do have one day in particular next week where we are watching a chance of showers. i'll show that to you in the next few minutes with my accuweather seven-day forecast. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. we begin with developing news out of oakland. a burned body was found near the park. it was discovered after 10:00 last night on skyline boulevard near the gate of the redwood regional park. no word yet on the person's identity. east bay regional parks police are the ones investigating. >> we are learning more about a san jose firefighter arrested last week. 53-year-old mario cuesta was arrested thursday. he's accused of multiple crimes, including selling meth to kids. he was also a volunteer at a south bay church. abc7 news reporter lisa amin

gulezian spoke with some of the parishioners and has the latest. >> reporter: as parishioners left mass they read the bulletin and quickly found in insert by the diocese. stating that a background check was done on mario before he started volunteering in 2012. and that nothing had been flagged. >> you hear things happening all over. of course, when it's that close, it hits home. >> he worked in the ministry of music and sang regularly at saint leo's the great. thursday agents from a special task force, which included the department of justice, arrested cuesta in the administration building. they seized his computer and searched his home. the 53-year-old is accused of

selling meth to my school students and having sex with a 17-year-old. >> god will judge him. we can just pray for him. >> he was a community outreach person for the fire department and worked with neighborhood associations, schools and church groups. >> it's very unfortunate being a firefighter because lots of young people, especially young men and women want to be firefighters. >> mario cuesta will make his first court appearance on tuesday. lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. muni has resumed normal service after being shut down yesterday following a fatal accident. a man was hit and killed by a train at the powell street station. abc7 news reporter tells us it tied up some riders headed to the chinese new year's parade on market street. >> reporter: muni subway service was restored after the body was removed from the tracks after 6:00 p.m.

the san francisco m. t. a. said a man was hit by the train as it approach the powell station. we talked with this man and three other people off-camera who said they were friends of the man who died. they told us he was homeless and had stored a backpack under the muni platform and got hit trying to retrieve it. the director couldn't confirm details but he said it's tough to keep an eye on every nook and cranny in the station. >> because of fire laws and security, some of the doors and rooms down here must remain open so occasionally we do find people who put belongings where they shouldn't. >> they said they try to clear out any homeless encampments they find as quickly as possible. it's especially bad when it rains. police shut down four muni stations just after 4:00 p.m. which is about the same time lanes on market street started getting diverted in preparation for the chinese new year's parade. that made for a confusing situation for riders. >> we are trying to get to

castro but we aren't sure how to get there bus we aren't familiar with the area. >> did they tell you how to get there? >> not really. i just would like a direct answer. >> one person was also injured in the station. a station agent aboard the train was hurt when it came to an abrupt stop and was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. abc7 news. >> new figures from the state health officials show that 248 people have died here from the flu this season. authorities are investigating an addition until 41 deaths that are possibly flu related. here in the bay area 51 deaths have been reported. santa clara county tops the list with 14. authorities say it is still not too late to get a flu shot. a growing list of stores is connected to a massive beef recall linked to a petaluma slaughterhouse. one is browns valley market in

napa. it is one business identified state-wide that could have received tainted beef from rancho feeding corporation. the meat manager questions the recall itself. >> it goes from january 1, 2013 and january 1, 2014. that's a year. 99% of the people have already eaten that, it's gone. i mean, what's the whole point? >> the usda said the petaluma slaughterhouse rancho is recalling 8 million pounds of meat products processed diseased and unhealthy animals without a full federal inspection. a washington company is recalling nearby 227,000 pounds of processed egg product because of pass i believe salmonella contamination. it was made between february of last year and this year. it was shipped to military installations nationwide. it carried the brand name ova easy.

prosecutors say they will try again after a jury failed to convict a man of murder in a so-called loud music trial. michael dunn was convicted of three counts of attempted second degree murder. the jury found the had 3-year-old guilty of shooting into a car outside a gas station back in 2012 after an argument over loud music coming from the car. dunn was charged with fatally shooting 17-year-old jordan davis of marietta, georgia. he claimed he acted in tell are -- in self-defense. a mistrial was declared on the first-degree murder charge. >> bart is hiring a consult at any time to find out why their labor talks were so unsuccessful and so expensive. the last round of talks led to two strikes, a contract dispute and cost bart more than $8 million. a cost included consulting fees and a third went to lead negotiator, toms hawk, whose contract was not renewed after it became clear he missed the

provision giving workers six weeks a year of paid family year. it is the year of horse and hundreds of thousands lined the streets of san francisco last night. it headed west on market street, to gearry and down post. more than 100 entrants took part in the procession. hundreds of floats, marching bands and lion dancer and city officials and miss chinatown usa. some have been coming for decades. >> never gets boring. it's the best. at night, plus the noise and lights. >> the parade ended with the golden dragon. it's 268 feet long. it takes a team of more than 100 men and women to carry it. it is the largest parade of its kind outside of china and it's been taking place in san francisco for more than 150

years. the streets will be packed again today for the chinatown community street fair. more than half a million people are expected to attend the two day event. there will be some street closers. you see them highlighted in yellow on the map. it includes parts of jackson and washington streets. the street fair runs from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. today. is the rain gone in let's check with lisa argen. >> it's really clear out here, carolyn, and temperatures continue to drop. yes, the rain is gone. we are looking at numbers in the 40s in the north bay. there is fog around the bay. here's emeryville. you can see the wet pavement. low 50s for you. we will talk about how warm it will get today and the president's day holiday coming up. >> thank you, lisa. and as you know, a new storm hits the east coast. why officials are concerned about all the recent snow piling up in the region in the past week.

avalanche in colorado. it happened yesterday evening in lake county. officials say seven people were on top of the ridge is that activated the avalanche. three people suffered broken bones and two walked away unharmed. two others are unaccounted for. rescue crews say they have to figure out the safest way to clear the area. snow and ice storms continue to pummel the east coast as a record drought continues in california. coming up on this week abc news senior meteorologist ginger sze and a panel of experts examine the costs and consequences of all this extreme weather impacting the country. you can catch it right here at abc7 at 8:00 this morning. yes, the east coast is digging out once again after another storm. nearly 10 inches of snow fell in parts of massachusetts and

island. officials are asking people to stay off the roads this morning. here's the abc news reporter. >> reporter: the latest storm comes with renewed fierce over the damage that all that piled-up snow can do to buildings. the average home can be stand about two feet of snow before the roof becomes susceptible to collapse. that's more than when some parts of the northeast have gotten. much more than that. this seven-year-old didn't need a roof over his head to survive the freezing cold. his best friend cocoa kept him warm for the 14 hours both were lost. >> the fast and furious snowstorms have depleted or exhausted the supply of road salt in many areas. >> under these conditions it really isn't possible for us to keep the roads clear and safe given the rate of snowfall. >> the state of connecticut has just taken delivery of 30,000 tons of salt. they will spread it around in more ways than one.

>> the d.o.t. will contact them to arrange to come to one of six facilities across the state of connecticut to provide them with sufficient salt based on their needs. >> another big casualty of the weather has been air travel with the highest number of flight cancellations in 25 years. >> they start to say a flight is cancel, they can he will. and it gets frustrating, but you have to deal with it. >> and if nature gives you snow, do snowboarding. this daredevil had a novel way of getting around in the snowbound streets of new york city and he didn't even get a ticket. even though, don't try this at home. abc news, new york. >> missouri football fans are showing their appreciation for michael sam, the all-american defensive end receiver received a standing ovation yesterday when he appeared on the arena video boards during a basketball game against tennessee. sam recently declared he is gay. he could become the first openly gay player in the nfl.

you see him shaking hands with fans. they were honored at halftime for their cotton goal win over oklahoma state. a bay area start-up is trying to bring the fitness revolution to your pet. just like monitors that help dieters and athletes track their activity, this technology helps owners monitor their dog's movement. here's health and science reporter carolyn johnson. >> spend a few minutes rough-housing in the back yard and you probably assume your dog is getting more than enough exercising. what if they aren't? the hidden secret may be what goes on when you are not around. >> one of the biggest benefits of a whistle is giving you a i don't know awareness about when is going on with your dog. >> that's where whistle comes into play. it's a san francisco start-up that developed a color monitor that works like a fitbit for dogs. the key, according to the co-founder, is owners can track

air, it could be a little tricky out there. 39 in petaluma with 47 in concord. there's a look at the visibility in miles. just three quarters of a mile. santa rosa, the livermore valley and the coast at 7-mile visibility. clear skies for about half of the night. it's 14 degrees colder in santa rosa. the numbers keep dropping there. we are pretty much status quo in san jose and mountain view with the numbers in the 50s. so getting the look at day light. mt. tam, a little fog in the valleys. overall partly cloudy and cool for the morning hours. sunny this afternoon. more sunshine for president's day. and a look at satellite and radar composite shows the storm track continues to stay to the north throughout today, tomorrow and much of the work week ahead. here's what happens as we go into tuesday. the clouds will increase and we are going to be looking at maybe a little light rain visiting mendocino county, parts of sonoma and perhaps northern

marin county. but still far enough out it could even dissipate and you may not see anything at all. showers, snow showers in the sierra nevada. a couple inches there. but the temperatures will continue to climb throughout the day. it's about 37 right now at the tahoe valley airport with a high of 50. it will be mild there. 58 yosemite with 60 in monterey. had a regular high yesterday at the tough show valley airport. 62 fremont, concord and antioch today. the delta coming in in the low 50s and northwest winds will keep it on the cool side at the coast. upper 50s there. the accuweather seven-day forecast shows more sunshine for the holiday tomorrow. a little more cloud cover on tuesday with a chance of rain in the north bay. wednesday some clouds. partly cloudy and even milder into next weekend. we are looking at a spring like forecast and we've got more of that to come. abc7 news has another great weather resource for you to follow. follow live doppler 7hd on twitter for the latest bay area

they will have to install fiber cables all over the country and that will cost about $11 billion to complete. google would like to start the project in three years. part of this freeway is shut down. that's in l.a. but so far it hasn't produced the massive traffic jam that was predicted. road closers on the heavily traveled 405 are expected to last until tuesday. workers are repaving almost six miles of lanes over a pass. it's all part of a project to add carpool lanes. drivers are being urged to avoid the area entirely. up next on the abc7 sunday morning news, a new warning about texting. why it's not just drivers who need to be careful. and a controversial new plan to help some bay area grape growers during the worst drought in state history. why not everyone is happy about it.

lisa argen is up on the roof. >> good morning, carolyn. we are starting with a clear sky here but yesterday's rain shower leaving leftover moisture and visibility issues in santa rosa, half-mile there. livermore three quarter mile and now getting into novato and the coast. be careful out there. showers all but again. a few in the hills which south. but you, too, are beginning to experience the partly cloudy sky and for the rest of the day we will look for temperatures coolest at the coast. northwest winds upper 50s there. point raise 59. you head over into oakland you will see low 60s. the warmest numbers should be down around san jose. high of 64 degrees. it will feel pretty good today. a return to the sun but more importantly, we need more rain. i'll let you know if any is on the way in a few minutes. >> thank you, lisa. a cruiseliner hit by hurricane-force winds and giant waves in the english channel is headed back to its home port of

till bury, i think land. an 85-year-old passenger died after a huge wave hit the leaner culled the marco polo. a sec passenger has been treated for nonlife-threatening injuries after being airlifted from the cruise ship. 14 more passengers suffered minor injuries. two people have died as those strong winds, heavy rain and waves batter southern britain this weekend. the latest round of bad weather is aggravating problems caused by widespread storms and flooding. britain's storm and rail networks have been disrupted with hundreds of uprooted trees blocking the path. even the royals are pitching in. they are positioning sandbags to protect a community near windsor castle. now to another danger. we all know the risk of driving while texting but the danger of distraction are not limited to cars. this morning a woman is

recovering after falling on to the tracks in front of an oncoming subway train in new york city. and police believe she was texting. here's abc news reporter ryan owens. >> reporter: just days ago a woman accidentally fell on the new york city subway tracks as the train was this train stopped, but not before hitting a woman. this video shot by an abc producer as first responders rush to her rescue. according to police the police say she was using her phone and texting. others say she may have been feeling dizzy and fell on to the tracks. a family member reached by abc news failed to comment. but as they tried to piece together what really happened, it to could highlight what police say is a growing danger, texting while walking. >> it's other big distraction. pedestrians aren't watching while they are walking. they aren't aware. >> according to a recent study,

the number of phone injuries has doubled in the last years, even exceeding the injuries among drivers using mobile phones. another study shows how hard it is to walk in a straight line while focused only on your phone. for us who claim we can do both. some said that might be a stretch. >> you were texting. do you feel like you are a little distracted when you do it? >> definitely. >> president obama is continuing his visit to our state this morning, combining business with pleasure. yesterday he played golf at the sunnylands retreat in rancho mirage. the president also signed two pieces of legislation. one lifting the federal debt limit and the other restores costs of living benefits for military retirees. on friday president obama announced a multimillion-dollar initiative to help california farmers affected by the drought. he returns to washington tomorrow. people focused on raising oakland's minimum wage are gathering signatures to try to

put the issue on the ballot. yesterday the lift-up-oakland coalition was among the groups hitting the pavement at the fruitvale bart station. they said the current minimum wage just doesn't cut it. >> it's just not enough for a working family to survive on. they can't make ends meet and they can't food food on the table or clothes on their kids' back. $12.25 is a good start for getting self sustaining for families so they can take care of themselves and build our local economy. >> a large part of the argument to raise the minimum wage is that it will lead to more local spending and that spending leads to more taxes paid which benefits local schools and makes streets safer. there are growing concerns this morning for treasure island residents after more radioactive material was found on the island last month. the san francisco chronicle reports the dime-size fragment

was detected during radiation scans in november, but not dug up by the navy until the end of last month. it's the latest radiological discovery by officials in charge of cleaning up treasure island. while they say the radiation and other toxics don't pose a health risk, residents disagree and say they have not been kept up-to-date on the cleanup efforts on the former military base. >> a mobile home in redding packed with explosives could be incinerated as early as today. sheriff's deputies have now doubled the evacuation area around the home to 2,000 feet. the evacuation began ten days ago and residents want to go back home. >> we are hoping it will be here if we get to come back. >> i'm just waiting for a signal that says we can all return to our lives. >> the owner of the house blew off his left hand and broke his right arm after an explosion.

his house is jammed with over 60 pounds of chemicals, gunpowder and other materials. the material is so volatile, according to authorities, the only way to remove the materials is to burn that house to the ground. new this morning, palo alto tops the list of bay area jurisdictions that paid the most in healthcare bills for former elected officials in 2012. according to our media partner, the marin independent journal, palo alto paid more than $115,000 for insurance in 2012. san rafael came in second at more than $102,000. the west contra costa county school district and the water district rounding out the top five. according to the report, 200 former officials at more than 65 agencies in the bay area are receiving taxpayer-funded medical coverage for life. there's some good news for wine lovers this year. california agriculture officials say last year was a record

harvest of wine grapes. growers brought in a bumper crop thanks to expanded acreage and overall favorable weather. that means there should be plenty of bargain bottles on grocery store shelves. wine grapes are one of california's top commodities and topped more than $3 billion last year. despite recent rain we are still facing a major drought and one bay area community is taking emergency and controversial measures to help. the santa rosa press democrat reports the heelsburg city council has approved letting grape growers and ranchers use highly recycled waste water. critics say it could contaminate ground water. still ahead in the sunday morning news, the successful experiment at an east bay laboratory that could go a long way toward boosting our energy supply. and this is a live look from

>> scientists at lawrence livermore national laboratory have taken steps to make energy the same way the sun does. jonathan bloom explains what they have managed to do at a firehouse in livermore, and what may be the world's oldest working light bulb. it it uses just 4 watts. how ironic up the street is the 500 trillion-watt light. most powerful laser in the world. it's the national ignition facility. the size of three football fields. all to focus a giant wallop of energy on one tiny spot. >> we are basically recreating a small piece of the sun inside the laboratory, which has never been done before. >> the sun creates energy through nuclear fusion, squeezing atoms together until they merge into one, giving off a massive heat. fusion powers the warp power on the starship enterprise. >> if we go in there we will die. the radiation will kill us. this scene from the latest star trek was filmed here at the livermore lab. in reality the inside looks like this. dozens of laser lenses. it squeezes the tiny pellet of

hydrogen fuel until the atoms start to combine. by carefully adjusting the pattern of this pulse light, it scientists have gotten the fuel to start heating itself. you can call it smoldering, the smoke that comes before fire. >> the fusion. >> the achievement is the major step toward the ultimate goal of the national ignition facility, which is ignition. the nuclear equivalent of getting the fuel to catch fire so it burns on its own. right now it's giving out about twice the amount of energy put into it. but only a tiny amount is reacting. ignition, the holy grail, is the chain reaction. >> it will run away and turn it into energy. energy equal to pounds of burning coal. from the size of one pixel on your tv. >> it would be an incredible long-term solution to our energy needs. >> at the livermore national lab, jonathan boom, abc7 news.

40s. but the fog, the cooler air descending into the valleys and that has allowed for a mile and a quarter visibility in santa rosa. and just a quarter mile in livermore. so three quarters of a mile in fairfield. so you were clear earlier. certainly the fog moving around this morning. be careful. we are look at this morning mainly cooler numbers for you. 13 degrees colder in the valley north bay, santa rosa but 4 degrees warmer in san jose with the insulation of the cloud deck. a nice purple hue to the sunrise from mt. tam. patchy, valley fog and cool temperatures to start. then a sunny day today. more sunshine for president's day. here's why. the storm track, for the most part. stays to the north throughout the entire work week ahead. but we do have a caveat as we go into tuesday. we are looking for increasing clouds around the bay. but the rain is going to be well to the north. around mendocino county. perhaps a shower around santa rosa. and then by the overnight hours we could see maybe a little bit

wednesday's jackpot grows to $20 million. the mission cultural center for latino arts threw a party for the community in san francisco yesterday. ♪ the center is celebrating its 27th birthday and it marked the event with free classes. among the offers were screen painting and flamingo dancing. normally the center gives more than 50 classes with a gallery and live performances. we heard all about the center and its activities at an abc7 listens meeting. >> we can hear now about our weather forecast with lisa argen up on the roof. >> good morning, carolyn. sunrise just a few minutes away. it will be a very pretty one around the bay because the clouds have dissipated. we do have some fog in the valleys. temperatures are much cooler this morning. this afternoon the low 60s around the bay. upper 50s san francisco and the coast. and the accuweather seven-day forecast. the holiday tomorrow.
