good morning, america, breaking overnight, a verdict in the loud music trial. the 47-year-old white man who shot an unarmed black teenager now looking at decades behind bars. but why did the jury deadlock on the key charge of murder? our legal experts dan abrams and nancy grace weigh in. blizzard, a nasty new storm nails the northeast with howling winds and heavy snow, causing dangerous whiteout conditions and power outages. now there is a thaw coming, but it may not last long. all in. >> let's start this new chapter with a clean slate. >> millions of americans obsessed with political dramas. "house of cards," "scandal" and "homeland." why even president obama is begging no spoilers, please. and oshie wins sochi.

t.j. oshie, an instant star after scoring the game-winning goal to lead team usa over russia in a classic thriller. what he and his fiancee, awaiting their first child, have to say about this incredible win. good morning, everybody. we're having a heated discussion about something irrelevant. we're live from sunny sochi with the latest on the unseasonably warm winter games, and snow-weary connecticut, reeling this morning from yet another storm. quite a contrast there. >> i checked the temperature in sochi, the high is expected to be 55 degrees. in connecticut, 28 degrees here in the u.s. meanwhile, so many folks in the united states near wits end over the never-ending attack by mother nature.
7:02 am
someone trying to get their driveway shoveled said they lost two tickets to the caribbean. in the snow. poor things. while others are taking it in stride. here, someone made a man making a snowman. that is creative. >> they should learn about etickets. they wouldn't have that problem. and this is how red sox fans, ron claiborne, pay attention. biding their time until opening day. big snow papi. and the storm and what's coming next weather wise, which is key, coming up in a few minutes. we begin with the explosive partial verdict in the trial of a florida man who shot a man to death over an argument over loud music. they found him guilty of attempted murder, but couldn't agree on the murder charge. ryan owens has covered the story from the start and has the latest from jacksonville. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning to you, bianna. the judge says he's never seen a

group work harder. i was in the courtroom when the verdict was read. i don't think i have ever seen a group look more exhausted. they deliberated more than 30 hours but the bottom line is, the final result feels like justice for nobody. >> we the jury find the defendant guilty of second degree murder. >> reporter: the verdict is confusing and unsatisfying to both sides. even the protesters weren't sure what to make of it. defendant michael dunn will likely spend the rest of his life in prison, but not for killing jordan davis. they deadlocked on whether it was murder or self-defense, as dunn claimed on the stand. >> i thought i was going to be killed. >> it's been a long journey. >> reporter: a mistrial on the murder count left his parents heart broken again. >> and we will continue to await for justice for jordan. >> reporter: the jury convicted the 47-year-old software developer of three counts of attempted second degree murder for shooting at an suv full of
7:04 am
teens at this jacksonville gas station in november 2012. the mother of one of those young men released this statement, justice has been served, but it's not complete. >> yes, ma'am. >> reporter: the state's attorney is already vowing to retry dunn on the first-degree murder charge. but the fact is under florida law, he must serve at least 60 years on the attempted murder charges. he would be 107 when he got out. >> he's in disbelief. it has not sunk in. even when he sat next to me, he said, how is this happening? >> it's sad for mr. dunn that he will live the rest of his life in that sense of torment, and i will pray for him. >> reporter: now here in jacksonville, there are 12 people everybody wants to hear from. of course, those jurors. so far they have declined all requests for an interview.
7:05 am
we can only hope that will change, because what a fascinating story to hear what went on in that jury room for all those many hours. >> everybody wants to know the dynamics that led to the partial verdict. ryan owens who has been on the case since the beginning. thank you. for more now on the partial verdict that surprised and saddened both sides. let's bring in our ace legal team, abc's dan abrams, my co-anchor of "nightline." from atlanta, nancy grace, good morning to both of you. nancy, start with you. are you surprised by this verdict and what do you make of it? >> well, i'm not surprised because you could see it coming. as early as friday night, they were saying we're hung up on one charge, but we have a verdict on the other charges. that clearly indicated the problem was the murder charge. that was the only charge of the five that was really different from the other charges. now this is true, he's got to do 60 years. because in florida they have
7:06 am
what's called 10-20 life. which mean it is you commit an ag assault with a gun, you can't run it concurrently. it's got to be 20 plus 20 plus 20. i will tell you what i think happened. i think that they decided that right or wrong, dunn believed he was under attack by jordan davis. so they could not agree, even on a lesser on davis. but as to the other three boys in the car, that that was attempted murder too. i am dissatisfied, but i'm not going to come down on that jury because they really gave it their all. >> and i don't know that they believed it. it may have been a juror or two who believed it. look, this was a tough self-defense case. >> correct. >> remember, he is claiming -- >> it was awful. >> that a shotgun is being pointed at him, and yet there is no evidence that there was a shotgun. there are witnesses from the scene who say that he was saying things like you're not going to talk to me that way, which is not self-defense.
7:07 am
>> his own fiancee said he didn't mention a gun to her. >> she never mentioned a gun. she was inside the gas station. so when she comes out and this has happened, he never mentions them having a gun. so this was a tough self-defense -- >> dan, he actually told police he may have imagined the gun. if you start to feel sympathetic toward michael dunn, he's not just a software creator, the former husband, the father, this is a guy that unloads on a car of kids, boys, who were at the mall that night trying to meet girls. leaves, makes a drink, orders a pizza and goes to bed. come on. unload ten bullets and go to sleep? >> and that's one issue is the bullets that may help explain where the jurors got caught up. because when you listen to the audiotape of the surveillance tape, which is only audio, you hear pop, pop, pop and then there's a pause. >> you're giving me a chill, dan. you've giving me a chill.
7:08 am
that's just how it happened. >> you hear another set of pop, pop, pop. and it's possible that a juror or two got caught up on whether the first set of bullets may have been self-defense with regard to jordan davis, and yet the other bullets that were fired, they may have felt didn't justify that. >> it's still an imagery gun. it's still an imaginary gun. he even said he may have imagined it. i don't agree with the verdict, but i think the jury really gave it their all and i think the state intends to retry it. >> you don't agree with the verdict, you mean, you don't an agree with the nonvictim. there was a verdict here. >> they came back with a verdict on four of the five counts. so that is a verdict. >> right. >> that mistried on one account. >> look, hung juries -- >> a lot of people are saying they're not going to retry. >> they are going to retry it. >> yeah, if anybody has been a crime victim like myself, i want justice for jordan davis, even a

again pushing, pulling, and digging their way out of another snowstorm. the second in three days. piling even more feet of snow on top of these already buried cars and homes across the northeast. >> i hate it. i wish it was done. >> reporter: with less than a day between storms, crews in new england, new york and philadelphia rushed to clear the roadways. but even they couldn't escape old man winter's wrath. watch this jeep coming to the rescue, towing that massive plow out of a snow bank. deicing crews blasted planes while passengers waited and waited to take off. even late into the night, watch as beams from this lighthouse cut through the conditions, blasting the massachusetts coastline. while salt is quickly running out across the region, in new york, some stores are even running out of snow boots. people now just begging for a little relief. >> i'm ready for spring.
