joining us from the roof deck. >> good morning, carolyn. pretty nice up here. plenty of sunshine and about 50 degrees. as we take a look at live doppler 7hd notice there are clouds in the form of fog. not only in santa rosa, but also in the east bay. livermore up to five miles visibility. that's an improvement, as well as santa rosa, you are less than a quarter mile. things are definitely clearing out around the bay with the light winds and the moisture we had some more visibility for much of the morning but sunshine on the which for all of you. temperatures in the 40s and 50s. we will see upper 50s by noontime, low 50s to 60s around the bay. there's a slight possibility of rain. we will talk about it when i go over the forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you. we begin with developing news out of oakland.

a burned body was found near the park. it was discovered after 10:00 last night on skyline boulevard near the gate of the redwood regional park. a car was found nearby. the east bay regional park police department is the agency investigating. more developing news, there was a one alarm fire in san jose. it started just after 3:00 this morning at an apartment complex on tucson drive. two of the buildings four units have burned. 15 people from all of the apartments have had to leave because power and gas service had to be cut off. the cause of that fire is under investigation. >> we are learning more about a san jose firefighter arrested last week. 53-year-old mario cuesta was arrested thursday. he's accused of multiple crimes, including selling meth to kids. and also sex crimes. he was also a volunteer at a south bay church. abc7 news reporter lisa amin

gulezian spoke with some of the parishioners and has the latest. >> reporter: as parishioners left saturday evening mass, they read the church bulletin and they quickly found this insert drafted by the san jose diocese. stating that a background check was done on mario before he started volunteering in 2012. and that nothing had been flagged. >> you hear things happening all over. of course, when it's that close, it hits home. you know, we just have to pray, that's all we can do. >> he worked in the my industry of music and sang regularly at saint leo's the great. thursday agents from a special task force, which included the department of justice, arrested. cuesta in the administration building. they seized his computer and searched his home. the 53-year-old is accused of

selling meth to high school students and having sex with a 17-year-old. >> god will judge him. we can just pray for him. >> he was a community outreach. person for the fire department and worked with neighborhood associations, schools and church groups. >> it's very unfortunate being a firefighter because lots of young people, especially young men and women, want to be firefighters. >> mario cuesta will make his first court appearance on tuesday. lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. muni has resumed normal service after being shut down yesterday following a fatal accident. morning the corner identified victim at a 57-year-old mendes. he was hit and killed by a train at the powell street station. abc7 news reporter tells us it tied up some riders headed to the chinese new year's parade on market street. >> reporter: muni subway service was restored after the body was

removed from the tracks after 6:00 p.m. the san francisco m. t. a. said a man was hit by the train as it approach the powell station. we talked with this man and three other people off-camera who said they were friends of the man who died. they told us he was homeless and had stored a backpack under the muni platform and got hit trying to retrieve it. the director couldn't confirm details but he said it's tough to keep an eye on every nook and cranny in the station. >> because of fire laws and security, some of the doors and rooms down here must remain open so occasionally we do find. people who put belongings where they shouldn't. >> they said they try to clear out any homeless encampments they find as quickly as possible. it's especially bad when it rains. police shut down four muni stations just after 3:00 p.m.

which is about the same time lanes on market street started getting diverted in preparation for the chinese new year's parade. that made for a confusing situation for riders. >> we are trying to get to castro but we aren't sure how to get there bus we aren't familiar with the area. >> did they tell you how to get there? >> not really. i mean, they explained all the complicated things but i just want like a direct answer. >> one person was also injured in the station. a station agent aboard the train was hurt when it came to an abrupt stop and was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. abc7 news. >> new figures from the state health officials show that 248 -- 243 people have died here from the flu this season. authorities are investigating an addition until 41 deaths that are possibly flu related. here in the bay area 51 deaths have been reported. santa clara county tops the list with 14. authorities say it is still not too late to get a flu shot. a growing list of stores is connected to a massive beef recall linked to a petaluma slaughterhouse.

one of the stores is browns valley market in napa. it is one business identified state-wide that could have received tainted beef from rancho feeding corporation. browns' meat manager questioned the recall itself. >> it goes from january 1, 2013 and january 1, 2014. that's a year. 99% of the people have already eaten that, it's gone. i mean, what's the whole point? >> the usda said the petaluma slaughterhouse rancho is recalling 8 million pounds of meat products processed diseased and unhealthy animals without a full federal inspection. a washington company is recalling nearby 227,000 pounds of processed egg product because of possible salmonella contamination. it was made between february of last year and this year. it was shipped to military

installations nationwide. it carried the brand name ova easy. prosecutors say they will try again after a florida jury failed to convict a man of murder in a so-called loud music trial. michael dunn was convicted of three counts of attempted second degree murder. the jury found the man guilty of shooting into a car outside a gas station back in 2012 after an argument over loud music coming from the car. dunn was charged with fatally shooting 17-year-old jordan davis of marietta, georgia. he claimed he acted in self-defense. a mistrial was declared on the first-degree murder charge. >> bart is hiring a consultant time to find out why their labor talks were so unsuccessful and so expensive. the last round of talks led to two strikes, a contract dispute and cost bart more than $8 million. a cost included consulting fees and a third went to lead negotiator, toms hawk, whose

contract was not renewed after it became clear he missed the provision giving workers six weeks a year of paid family year. it is the year of the horse and hundreds of thousands lined the streets of san francisco last night. it was the annual chinese new year's parade. it headed west on market street, then to geary, down post and ended in chinatown on kearney street. more than 100 entrants took part in the procession. there were dozens of floats, marching bands and lion dancer and city officials and miss chinatown usa. some have been coming for decades. >> never gets boring. it's the best. at night, plus the noise and lights. >> the parade ended with the golden dragon. it's 268 feet long. it takes a team of more than 100 men and women to carry it. it is the largest parade of its

kind outside of asia and it's san francisco for more than 150 years. the streets will be packed again today for the chinatown community street fair. more than half a million people are expected to attend the two day event. there will be some street closers. you see them highlighted in yellow on the map. it includes stretches of grant and pacific avenue, as well as jackson and washington streets. it began at 9:00 this morning and runs until 5:00 p.m. let's get a check on the accuweather forecast with meteorologist lisa argen. >> carolyn, it's nice and sunny around the bay. the fog is gone. temperatures in the low 50s. we are returning to the same old pattern but there is a chance of rain in the extended outlook. i will have the details when we return. >> thank you. also ahead, a new storm hitting the east coast. why officials are concerned about all the recent snow piling

rescuers will resume searching this morning for two skiers who are missing after an avalanche in colorado. it happened yesterday evening in lake county. officials say seven people were on top of the ridge is that activated the avalanche. three people suffered broken bones and two walked away unharmed. two others are unaccounted for. rescue crews say they have to figure out the safest way to clear the area. >> turning now to the blizzard that struck southern new england two days after it dumped more than two feet of snow.

and as much as $4.5 billion in addition until spending will go into heating bills this winter. then you have businesses. the airlines, for example, have suffered massive problems with the flight cancellations. and cities are experiencing it. they are paying more to clear the snow. >> jarvis estimates about $15 billion in spending losses for businesses due to the storms. missouri football fans are showing their appreciation for michael sam. the all-american defensive end receiver received a standing ovation yesterday when he appeared on the arena video boards during a basketball game against tennessee. sam recently declared he is gay. he could become the first openly gay player in the nfl. they were honored at halftime for their cotton goal win over oklahoma state. a bay area start-up is trying to bring the fitness revolution to your pet. just like monitors that help

dieters and athletes track their activity, this technology helps owners monitor their dog's movement. here's health and science reporter carolyn johnson. >> spend a few minutes rough-housing in the back yard and you probably assume your dog is getting more than enough exercising. what if they aren't? the hidden secret may be what goes on when you are not around. >> one of the biggest benefits of a whistle is giving you a i general awareness about what is going on with your dog. >> that's where whistle comes into play. it's a san francisco start-up that developed a collar monitor that works like a fitbit for dogs. the key, according to the co-founder, is owners can track their dog's activity through an app on their smartphone. >> on the trend screen you can start to see each day summarized. how much activity did we get? did we hit our goal?

redwood city. that's one of the cooler spots. 53 downtown and 54 san jose and half moon bay is at 55. isn't that a nice shot? plenty of blue sky, about 8-mile visibility here. and with the haze, it's 50 in petaluma, low 50s from concord to the livermore valley and finally from mt. tam. get set for a sunny and mild afternoon around the bay today. the next chance of rain comes our way late tuesday into wednesday. spotty showers, at best. beyond that, yep, unfortunately more dry days ahead. let's take a look at the satellite composite. you will notice that the storm track still staying to the north for the next several days. a holiday tomorrow. that looks pretty nice. more sunshine. but tuesday we will see some increasing clouds and a weak weather system to the north. that wants to bring down a little bit of shower activity come tuesday night into ukiah and cloverdale. but by overnight you will notice

perhaps maybe some drizzle along the coast and then beyond this not only the high pressure builds in, builds in pretty strongly. temperatures around the bay today, once again pretty mild. getting rid of the cloud cover in the mountains. 49 in tahoe. look for 60 monterey. building clouds in southern california and 76 there. back home a look for temperatures ranging from the upper 50s half moon bay. northwest winds keeping it pleasant today with 61 in vallejo, 63 fremont. about the same in san jose and the accuweather 7 day forecast, a nice day for president's day and then for tuesday here comes the next slight chance of a shower. but really it's probably going to amount to more drizzle and mist along the coast. wednesday, thursday and friday high pressure builds back and the numbers get even milder. it should be in the lower 60s. we are still just running 20 to 30% of normal for our rainfall.

>> mountain view-based google wants to make the internet 1,000 times faster then the average speed currently in the u.s. it's working on 10 gigabyte internet connections. the current average speed is much lower, 9 megabits. they will have to install fiber cables all over the country and that will cost about $11 billion to complete. google would like to start the project in three years. part of this freeway is shut down.

that's in l.a. but so far it hasn't produced the massive traffic jam that was predicted. road closers on the heavily traveled 405 are expected to last until tuesday. workers are repaving almost six miles of lanes over a pass. it's all part of a project to add carpool lanes. drivers are being urged to avoid the area entirely. apparently they are doing just that. coming up next on the abc7 sunday morning news, a new warning about texting. why it's not just drivers who need to be careful. and a controversial new plan to help some bay area grape growers during the worst drought in state history. why not everyone is happy about it. one of the besis that millia is that millions of people will qualify for financial assistance. it's important to remember that the lower your annual income, the greater financial assistance you will receive.

>> welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather. here's lisa argen on the roof. >> we had a little fog earlier. that has cleared out and we are looking at sunny skies around the bay. 54 right here. san jose temperatures in the 50s, as well. the coolest numbers are in the north bay. plenty of sunshine on the way today. temperatures at the coast will be slightly cooler. northwest winds keeping it in the upper 50s there. we should be around average today. we know the rainfall is well below average. i'll let you know if any of this is on the way when i look at the seven-day forecast coming up in a few minutes. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. >> a cruiseliner hit by

hurricane-force winds and giant waves in the english channel is heading back to its home port. an 85-year-old passenger died after a huge wave hit the leaner called the marco polo. a second passenger has been treated for nonlife-threatening injuries after being airlift from the cruise ship. 14 more suffered minor injuries. now to another kind of danger. we all know the risk of driving while texting or texting while driving. but the danger of distractions are not limited to cars. this morning a woman is recovering after falling on to the tracks in front of an oncoming subway train in new york city. and police believe she was texting. here's abc news reporter ryan. owens. >> reporter: just days ago a woman accidentally fell on the new york city subway tracks as the train was approaching. this train stopped, but not before hitting a woman. this video shot by an abc producer as first responders rush to her rescue. according to police the police

-- the witnesses say she was using her phone at the time of the accident. she may have been feeling dizzy and fell on the tracks. but as authorities try to piece together what really happened, the indicates could highlight what police say is a growing danger. texting while walking. >> it's a big distraction. pedestrian aren't watching where they are walking and they aren't aware. >> according to a recent study, the number of phone injuries has doubled in the last years, even exceeding the injuries among drivers using mobile phones. another study shows how hard it is to walk in a straight line while focused only on your phone. for us who claim we can do both. our own juju change discovered that might be a stretch. >> you were texting. >> do you do it a lot? >> sometimes do you feel like you are a little distracted when you do

it? >> definitely. >> that was rhino wins reporting >> president obama is continuing his visit to our state this morning, combining business with pleasure. yesterday he played golf at the sunnylands retreat in rancho mirage. the president also signed two pieces of legislation. one lifting the federal debt limit and the other restores costs of living benefits for military retirees. on friday president obama announced a multimillion-dollar initiative to help california farmers affected by the drought. he returns to washington tomorrow. people focused on raising oakland's minimum wage are gathering signatures to try to put the issue on the ballot. yesterday the lift-up-oakland coalition was among the groups hitting the pavement at the fruitvale bart station. they told potential supporters they feel the current eight dollars an hour minimum wage just doesn't cut it. >> it's just not enough for a working family to survive on. they can't make ends meet and they can't food food on the

table or clothes on their kids' back. $12.25 is a good start for getting toward self sustainability for families and they can take care of themselves and we can build our local economy. >> a large part of the argument to raise the minimum wage is that it will lead to more local spending and that spending leads to more taxes paid which benefits local schools and makes streets safer. there are growing concerns this morning for treasure island residents after more radioactive material was found on the island last month. the san francisco chronicle reports the dime-size fragment was detected during radiation scans in november, but not dug up by the navy until the end of last month. it's the latest radiological discovery by officials in charge of cleaning up treasure island. while they say the radiation and other toxics don't pose a health risk, residents disagree and say they have not been kept up-to-date on the cleanup

efforts on the former military base. >> a mobile home in redding packed with explosives could be incinerated as early as today. sheriff's deputies have now doubled the evacuation area around the home to 2,000 feet. neighbors were forced to leave ten days ago. they are anxious to get back home. >> we are hoping it will be here if we get to come back. >> i'm just waiting for a signal that says we can all return to our lives. >> the owner of the house blew off his left hand and broke his right arm after an explosion. his house is jammed with over 60 pounds of chemicals, gunpowder and other materials. the material is so volatile, according to authorities, the only way to remove the materials is to burn that house to the ground. new this morning, palo alto tops the list of bay area jurisdictions that paid the most in healthcare bills for former elected officials in 2012.

according to our media partner, the marin independent journal, palo alto paid more than $115,000 for insurance in 2012. san rafael came in second at more than $102,000. the west contra costa county school district and the water district rounding out the top five. also bart. according to the report, 200 former officials at more than 65 agencies in the bay area are receiving taxpayer-funded medical coverage for life. there's some good news for wine lovers this year. california agriculture officials say last year was a record harvest of wine grapes. growers brought in a bumper crop thanks to expanded acreage and overall favorable weather. that means there should be plenty of bargain bottles on grocery store shelves. wine grapes are one of california's top commodities and topped more than $3 billion last year. despite recent rain we are

still facing a major drought and one bay area community is taking emergency and controversial measures to help. the santa rosa press democrat reports the heelsburg city council has approved letting grape growers and ranchers use highly treated recycled waste water. critics say it could contaminate ground water. you can see in the nassau map just how dry the state still is. the plant growth sufficient factual basis low normal for this time of year. the green shows normal vegetation growth. the past year has been the driest since recordkeeping began back in 1885. still ahead in the sunday morning news, the successful experiment at an east bay laboratory that could go a long way toward boosting our energy supply. and here is a live look from our sutro cam. light showers overnight have

>> new research suggests crocodiles can climb trees. university of tennessee's zoologist heard about the phenomenon and decided to investigate. they have taken reports from all over the world and have seen the crocs in the trees themselves. they never actually witnessed how the crocodiles got up there but believe they worked their way up through branches.

we will let you know if there's any in the seven-day forecast. scientists at lawrence livermore national laboratory have taken steps to make energy the same way the sun does. jonathan bloom explains what they have managed to do at a firehouse in livermore, and what may be the world's oldest working light bulb. it it uses just 4 watts. how ironic up the street is the 500 trillion-watt light. most powerful laser in the world. it's the national ignition facility. the size of three football fields. all to focus a giant wallop of energy on one tiny spot. >> we are basically recreating a small piece of the sun inside the laboratory, which has never been done before. >> the sun creates energy through nuclear fusion, squeezing atoms together until they merge into one, giving off a massive heat. fusion powers

low 50s downtown. across the bay, 55 in oakland and from our sutro tower camera you can see it's nice and clear. a little hazy where the fog is still lingering around santa rosa. the cool spot 45. livermore has cleared on out, in the low 50s, as well as concord with 54 in vacaville. so the winds ever calm and tonight will be another chilly night perhaps with some fog. but overall as we look at our forecast highlights for the next several days, it is the same old, same old with sunshine today, sunshine tomorrow for president's day and by tuesday maybe only a few areas of light sprinkles. we will show you why in just a mommy. and then beyond that it is looking dry and even warmer than average. the pacific satellite picture shows the storm track well to the north right now and our system has pushed well out of the bay. but in the next couple of days there is a system that wants to flirt with northern california, but this is what happens.

we will see the sun tomorrow, a few more clouds on tuesday, and then by tuesday evening ukiah and cloverdale, perhaps a few light sprinkles and by the overnight hours we can see maybe a couple of sprinkles around the bay. that's it. that system moves on out and we are back to high pressure in command. 58 for today in yosemite with 70 in fresno. the coast will be clear and cool with numbers in the 60s there. but the surf builds in southern california with mid-70s. and temperatures in and around the bay average for this time of year. upper 50s it low to mid-60s. but the rainfall certainly isn't. with only four inches in oakland and about 5 1/2 in san francisco. that's only about 32 to 36% of average. so the accuweather seven-day forecast shows more sunshine today with about the same range in temperatures tomorrow for the holiday monday. a few more clouds on tuesday. maybe a few sprinkles overnight. by wednesday we are back to

disappointing night in the 3-point shooting contest. here's mike shumann with the highlights in this morning's sports. >> good morning. the nba is staging their all-star weekend, which includes fun for everyone. we tip off with the three-point contest. warrior point guard steph curry representing. steph in the competition for the second year in a row. did not have success last year either. bounced in the first round. made 12 of 25 for a total of 16 points. he needs someone in his first -- in his face to make shots. and meanwhile the final round. belinelli had 17 baskets for 24 points. at least a former warrior won the event. meanwhile in the dunk competition, harrison barns didn't farewell either. missing on the first two attempts. finally dunked on the third and final. mclemore, over shaquille o'neal for the the best dunk so far. the dunker of the night voted by the fans, john wall of the wizards. a sick move, hovering for the slam and the big fun for all.

college hoops, cal and seattle hosted by the huskies. gave the bears a run for their money. washington dominated early, but the bears came roaring back. wallace the steal, and then the finish. cal ended the half on a 19-2 run. justin cobb misses but david crab for the put back. wallace lays it in. he had 20. cobb, 26 his 18. cal winning big, 72-59, improving to 8-4 in pac-12 play. >> stanford facing washington state. and anthony brown put on a show. 89 of 10 shooting, including four 3s. he had a career high 30 points. stanford led at the half. few times brown missed, his teammates had his back. the put-back slam and stanford wins 69-56. well, it's rare when a college athlete gets his or her jersey retire, especially only a year removed from the school.

last night in we had just that in meraga. st. mary's hosting byu he got his number retired. only the second men's basketball jersey retired in school history. well-deserved. gaels led by as many as 14 in the first half. byu rallied. collins, 2 of his 14. cougars outscored st. mary's in the second half. they sweep the season series with the 60-57 victory. santa clara hosting usf. apparently there weren't enough shirts in the gift shop. the freshman lays it in for 2 of 14. ties the game at 58. and the career night for him. he tips it in. 26 points. 6 boards. he ices it with the monster two-handed jam. 21 seconds left. usf wins it 69-62. that's the way the ball bounces. i'm mike shumann. see you again tonight at five. have a great day. >> we hear a lot of talk about body image these days and some of the things that contribute to

the mission cultural center for latino arts threw a party for the community in san francisco yesterday. ♪ the center is celebrating its 27th birthday and it marked the event with free classes. among the offers were screen painting and flamingo dancing. normally the center gives more than 50 classes with a gallery and live performances. we heard all about the center and its activities at an abc7 listens meeting. >> let's get a final check of the accuweather forecast. high and dry, lisa? >> yes, carolyn. that's absolutely right. today will be milder for some in the north bay but the northwest winds keeping it cool in the upper 50s. 63 for san jose. cool tonight. a little patchy fog. president's day looking just as nice a few clouds, maybe a shower on tuesday we hope.
