high ja high jack -- hijacking in mid-air overnight. terry moran is in london with the latest. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, robin. there was panic in fact international skies overnight. a rare successful hijacking. this morning authorities are questioning the ethiopian co pilot of ethiopian airlines flight 702 is being questioned. he is the man who seized control of the plane in a bid for asylum from his troubled and violent native land. >> an aircraft from ethiopian airlines wanted to land in geneva, first for fuel. but then we have realized that it was not only for fuel. >> reporter: it started in the dead of night in the skies of italy around 12:30 a.m. local monday time. it was on its away from ethiopia to rome, when suddenly the plane's transponder started walking 7500. the worldwide distress code for a flight that is being hijacked. the alleged hijacker, it turns

out, the plane's copilot. an ethiopian man in his early 30s. he took control of the plane when the pilot was in the bathroom and locked himself in the cockpit. telling air traffic control he wanted to land in geneva, switzerland. >> we have still trying to get a response for your request. you can see the hijacked plane on the live broadcast. it circled back and forth. the copilot unapproved for landing. he tells the controllers that the plane is running out of fuel with over 200 passengers and crew on board. >> fuel remaining now is 20 minutes. >> reporter: around 6:00 a.m. geneva time, the plane lands safely. passengers seen exiting the plane. hands over their heads, but unharmed. the copilot exiting through this open cockpit window, possibly down the rope seen in the picture. that's when police arrested him. they said he demanded asylum because he felt threatened in his home country. if charged and convicted in the hijacking, he could face up to 20 years in prison.

officials and air defense systems throughout europe on high alert. the passengers were unaware they were being hijacked at all. questions abound. if what the copilot wanted was asylum, why hijack the plane and take it to switzerland when he could have gotten off the plane in rome and asked for it in italy? >> good question. terry, thank you. let's get more on this from brian ross. you hear something like this, terry just said, alerts go off all around the world. we all remember that egyptian pilot that brought down the plane. >> that's right, and the basic premise of air security is to make sure that no one can get inside of the cockpit. a crazed or determined pilot can cause havoc. in 1999, a copilot of an egypt airplane after taking off from kennedy airport apparently flew it right into the ocean. killing 217 people. >> you can take some precautions. there's no foolproof way to stop a rogue pilot. >> there really isn't.

italian jets were scrambled to follow the plane into geneva. and in the u.s., foreign aircraft are required to take certain maneuvers by the tower to make sure the pilots are under control and following directions. if not, jets would be scrambled here. >> unnerving to say the least. a new snowstorm, a new one now developing in the midwest and on track for the northeast. ginger is here with the latest. you're waving the white flag. we all are. >> it's the white scarf. that's my face. okay, let's get rid of it. let's talk about that snow that is coming. minneapolis, seeing it this morning. look at the camera from earlier this morning. it's going to be a messy commute. they expect anywhere from 3 to 6 inches of snow. that same snow total is headed for places like chicago. detroit. all coming in with some of their top ten snowiest seasons. that's true. you look at new york city. boston. this happens for us tomorrow on the east coast. it's in the midwest today. it moves east, gains a little strength.

look at the snow totals. west of new york city in the 6-plus. up to new hampshire, western massachusetts and western connecticut. i'll time it all out for you and bring back my scarf in just a couple of minutes. don't go anywhere. >> thank you, ginger. to the olympics now. weather has been an issue. today, again, two races in the men's snowcross and the 15-kilometer biathlon have been cancelled because of the fog on the mountain. amy robach tracking it all. she's at "gma" olympics desk in sochi. good morning, amy. we see the fog behind you. >> yeah, george, i mean, the weather still the big story here. this time, not the heat. it's the fog up in the mountains. but all was bright in the iceberg skating palace last night where the ice dancers put on a dynamic show. especially three exciting pairs from america. this morning, weather conditions left many of the competitions postponed, due to heavy fog, including the men's snowboard cross competition.

commanding in the men's super g. weibrecht for the silver. >> down comes bode miller to the finish line. >> and bode miller with the bronze. becoming the oldest alpine skier to win an olympic medal. afterwards, the record six-time olympic medalist overcome with emotion. tears for his late brother, whose dream it was to compete as a snowboarder in these sochi games. >> losing my brother was hard. in the finish, it just came out. >> reporter: from bittersweet to simply untouchable. after their heart-stopping shootout win over russia on saturday, the u.s. men's hockey team slapped slovenia yesterday, 5-1. >> the more we play, the better we get. >> reporter: their eyes now fixed on the quarterfinals this wednesday. now to the latest news. tough times for women on the slopes of rosa khutor park. u.s. snowborder jaqueline hernandez was knocked out after a fall on a seeding run. she needed to be taken off the slopes on a stretcher.

two other competitors were taken off those slopes as well. all of this after russian skater marie broke her spine. russian president vladimir putin visiting her in the hospital. she's been air-lifted to germany for further treatment. all of the accidents happening on the same hill. the u.s. bobsledders got into the action on sunday. fine finishes in the first two heats. three teams coming in as high as third. they take the track again this morning in a bid to win the first u.s. bobsledding gold in 62 years. new in the mix, the high-tech sleds customized by bmw. also on track this morning, crowd-favorites the jamaican team. slow speeds and a cracked visor hampered their run on sunday. even though they are currently in last place, they have a worldwide audience cheering them on. they're like rock stars here, guys. everyone waiting in line to get their picture with them. i have not gotten the chance. but i still have a few more days. i'm hoping for it. >> never has last place been so good. thank you. let's get an update on the medal count. josh.

>> that hockey game from the u.s. and russia, the great michael farber called it the most meaningful meaningless game in the history of the sport. 48 hours, it's holding us rapt. what a morning. let's take a look. shall we? heading into day ten now of the games. the netherlands, where might they be without speedskating? who knows? because they keep winning every medal available, seemingly. not only did the women sweep the podium in the women's 1500, they also took fourth place. didn't even count. they sit 17 in overall medals. one ahead of russia and the u.s., trailing just in their wake, norway, canada, bringing up the rear. oh, what a great final week. >> someone who knows what it's like to have a gold medal or two, other medals as well. we're joined from gold medal-winning soccer star julie foudy, who is covering the games

for abc and our sister network at espn. we've been seeing the fog. as an athlete, you're all prepared for your event, it gets postponed, what do you do? >> well, the sports psychologists would probably say some type of term like embrace the challenge. we as athletes say, you deal with it and move on. that's what you do. you know things will be crazy. weather challenges. all sorts of distractions. the best olympians know you just go. you go with the flow. >> you deal with it. i like that. davis and white. we could see olympic history. ice dancing for the american team. twosome like that. they were spectacular. what do they need, what is the biggest challenge in the free skate competition later today? >> the biggest challenge comes in the form of the canadian duo. tessa virtue and scott mauer. boy have they been impressive. they're second. they're the defending olympic champions. the crazy thing about this is

happens? he ties for the bronze medal down to the hundredth of a second. >> that was a beautiful moment are you as excited as we are here? >> i am. bring it, bring it. deal with it. >> deal with it. thank you, julie. we're going to get the other morning's top stories from josh. >> begin with a story that broke overnight. a shooting inside a walmart in arizona. two men began fighting at the register and one pulled out a gun and opened fire. the 36-year-old victim would later die at the hospital. the suspect was arrested after his family called police. and a shocking confession from a pennsylvania newlywed. the so-called female craigslist killer now claims to have murdered 22 people across the country. mara schiavocampo has the details. >> reporter: a petite, baby-faced teen now claiming to be one of the country's deadliest serial killers. 19-year-old newlywed and new mother miranda barber could face

the death penalty for what police call a thrill-kill. police say in november miranda and elliott barber, her husband of just three weeks, 22 years old, lured a victim on craigslist. they posted an ad for section in exchange for murder. they murdered 42-year-old troy la ferrara in their car. now in a jailhouse interview with a local pennsylvania paper, barber has confessed to murdering him and claims to have killed nearly two dozen more across the country. starting at just 13 years old when she joined a satanic cult. saying, when i hit 22, i stopped counting. >> she was meek. she was mild. she was soft spoken. very matter of fact. >> reporter: in the interview, she says she's only killed quote bad people. now investigators have to decide if she's seeking redemption. or just attention. >> you would be skeptical. you would allow her to provide details, locations, dates, names, and be see if she can corroborate what she's telling

you. >> mara, thank you. overseas, a security camera has captured an attack on tourists in egypt. a bomb ripping through a bus, you see it there. killing three south koreans and the bus's driver. such violence has been aimed at government force, though, and not tourists in that country. three american diplomats have been expelled from venezuela. the regime there is struggling to control violent anti-government protesters. they stand accused of conspiring with opposition forces. a kentucky minister and star of the reality show "snake salvation" has died from a rattlesnake bite. pastor jamie coots, you see him here, refused medical treatment. he trusted god to heal him one more time. he had survived eight previous snakebites. apple is reportedly working on an app to predict your risk for a heart attack.

shot after shot on saturday. >> when he was picked, he didn't know they settled it at shootouts. his pre-eminent skill. it was great. we'll get the latest on the investigation into racing champ michael schumacher's skiing accident. was his injury worse because of his helmet camera? also ahead. robin. this is a very important one that you have. >> kimberly williams-paisley. we know her as an actress, brad paisley's wife. she's a daughter. she opened up about her mother, a form of dementia that her mother has been facing in recent years. and the hope is by talking about it they can bring awareness and help other families as well. really opens up. right now, the controversial finish to the loud music trial in florida. michael dunn convicted of attempted murder. but the jury deadlocked on other charges including murder and manslaughter. ryan owens brings us the story. he has an exclusive interview with michael dunn's daughter and

joins us from jacksonville. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning to you, george. since that split verdict, we have heard reaction from all sorts of people, but this is the very first time we're hearing from michael dunn's emotional family. rebecca dunn says she's barely stopped crying since a jury found her father guilty of three counts of attempted second-degree murder over the weekend. >> i love him so much. he's my best friend. i can't imagine living life without him. >> we the jury find the defendant guilty -- >> reporter: after 30 hours of deliberations, the jury deadlocked on the central question of what happened that november night in 2012. did the 47-year-old software developer murder jordan davis when he fired ten shots outside this jacksonville gas station? >> oh, my god, somebody's shooting! >> reporter: or was it self-defense as he claimed on the stand? >> i said, you're not going to kill me you son of a [ bleep ]. and i shot him. >> he's protecting himself.

if he sees no other way than to bring out his gun, that's what he's going to do. >> reporter: rebecca was there for the start of the trial but had to come home to iowa for work. her father writes her frequently. like this jailhouse letter last summer. hello, my darling daughter. he talked about the prosecutors in his trial. they know they have such a weak case against me and no chance of winning. that's not how it turned out. even without a murder conviction, he'll spend the next 60 years in prison. for jordan davis' parents, a hung jury on murder means a mistrial and more heartbreak. their son would have turned 19 sunday. they provided us these pictures of a birthday party they threw in his honor. >> we'll continue to stand and we'll continue to wait for justice for jordan. >> reporter: the state's attorney here is vowing to bring michael dunn back to this

courthouse for a retrial on that first-degree murder count. not that that will change his fate, george. under florida law, michael dunn cannot walk out of prison, listen to this, until he's 107 years old. >> okay, ryan, thank you very much. dan abrams joins us. we haven't heard from any of the jurors yet. do you have a theory how they might have reached this split decision by distinguishing the two vol yis of shots? >> if you read the questions that the jurors sent out. it sounds like at least one of them was taking the self-defense claim seriously with regard to jordan davis. the only way to explain it then is that the jury can't agree on the shots that killed jordan davis. you assume that the first shots were the ones that killed jordan davis. if you actually listen to the surveillance tape, to the shots, you hear the pop, pop, pop. and then a pause. and then the other shots. and what it seems this jury did is say, well, we can't unanimously agree, beyond a

reasonable doubt on the murder charge. we can unanimously agree that the second set of shots, that they were attempted murder of everyone else in the car. >> as they were driving away. >> as they were driving away. you're hearing that means a minimum of 60 years in prison. >> why is it necessary to retry him? given the difficulties. we just heard from ryan on this attempt murder charges, it's 60 years in jail no matter what. >> it's not necessary. but i think in a case like this, the prosecutors want to do it. it becomes a case about justice for jordan davis. >> and no chance -- there's no incentive for michael dunn to get a deal going forward. >> no. a lot of people are saying, the prosecutor should try to cut a deal to avoid a trial. the prosecutors should do that. i can't imagine michael dunn will do that. i expect the prosecutors to move forward. not because of putting him away for x number of years. but because in a case like this, which means so much to so many people, you want to send a

message that says jordan davis' legacy is not being forgotten. >> thank you, dan. >> and jordan davis' parents will be with us on wednesday. his 19th birthday was on sunday. again, his parents will join us wednesday. now to new questions about the helmet cameras and ski safety. investigators taking a closer look at formula one racing champ michael schumacher's near fatal accident last month. big questions now about whether his helmet camera made the accident worse. abc clayton sandell has the story. >> reporter: this morning, the investigation into the accident that left formula one racing champ michael schumacher fighting for his life may now be focusing on his helmet camera. schumacher, in a medically induced coma since december, lost his balance at a french ski resort, slamming his head on a rock. according to "the daily mirror," prosecutors are expecting to say the ski gear worked just fine,

but that the french ski academy is investigating why his helmet shattered. new questions about whether the camera itself weakened the helmet. >> if a hole were drilled into the helmet and that were the method of mounting a camera, then potentially it could cause a problem with the integrity of the helmet. >> reporter: these cameras are not just for extreme athletes. now everyone seems to have one. capturing the fun. >> it's awesome. good run s. >> reporter: and the not so fun. >> holy [ bleep ]. that's edward in an avalanche. >> reporter: posting their exploits on youtube. some experts believe the cameras may be encouraging people to take dangerous risks getting the perfect shot. the good news is more people are wearing helmets, one estimate up to 70%. but they're not perfect. even if you have a helmet, there's no guarantee it will save your life. >> no. if you have a substantial impact, straight on with a fixed object, then it is probably not

and thankfully, no one was hurt. meanwhile, at the winter games in sochi, the fog is the big winner on the slopes today. so dense in the mountains. two events have been canceled today. that fog expected to hang around for the next couple of days as the heat hits the snow. it will not affect today's ice dancing. meryl davis and charlie white, the americans, in first place entering today's final performances with a strong, but not commanding lead. they could become the first u.s. pair to win gold in that sport. and, a u.s. team enters the final two-man bobsled races today with the chance to become the first americans to medal in that event since 1952. and new images this morning from the aftermath of a deadly avalanche in colorado. two skiers were swept away and killed this weekend. another skier killed in idaho in a separate avalanche. 15 people have died in avalanches thus far this season. the mountains of the northwest bracing for up to seven feet of additional snow this week.

in the mountains of idaho, two families survived a night of sub freezing temperatures after their suv got stuck in a snow bank. they had no supplies. just a few snacks. the two fathers and three young children had to walk 19 miles in the bitter cold to finally get help. it took nine hours to do it. thankfully, everyone is okay. we cannot say the same about the plane you're about to see. passengers on this american airlines jet in baltimore were not going anywhere after the tractor that pushes planes away from the gate crashed through the plane's nose. it may have damaged the landing gear. the flight, thankfully, had to be canceled. basketball highlight. a whole lot more than that. take a look. 54-year-old michael quinn from springfield, missouri, in a small college game, given the chance to hit a three-pointer during a halftime contest. and take a look. it goes!

aform a form of dementia. there was a beautiful essay she wrote in the new issue of "redbook." she says this is their story of dealing with it. we first got to know kimberly williams-paisley as the daughter in "father of the bride." >> i'men gauged, i'm getting married. >> reporter: if real life, she's the wife of country music superstar of brad paisley. and the mom of two boys. a working mop, she was glad her role on nashville kept her close to home. i was distraught that your character was killed off of "nashville." >> you and me both. shot through the heart by a stray bullet. come on. >> what are the chances? >> they let me know in the summer. i have to take a step back and

remember that this character of peggy was only supposed to be in three episodes. so i'm lucky she lasted as long as she did. >> i have had the privilege of spending time with you and brad at home in nashville. can't believe how the little ones are growing up so. >> they do that. our oldest is about to turn 7. we're guilty of babying the youngest. where is that baby going? so, yeah, it's so fun, though. they're at a great age. >> as kimberly watches her sons, huck and jasper, thrive and grow, she's had to watch her mother, linda williams, succumb to primary aaphasia. something kimberly is finally ready to talk about publicly. >> my mother is finally at a point where my mother is okay for us to talk about it. there was a long time that she

didn't want us to talk about it. we had to hide it and cover up for her. protect her pride. i felt like we were at a point where our story could help other people. >> before we can talk about where you are now and your family, take us back to those dark moments. >> she started showing symptoms about two years before she was diagnosed. seemed stress-related. she had more anxiety. show was fighting to find words more than she used to. it was my mom who came to us and said, something's wrong. i'm having trouble finding words. i'm having trouble writing my name on the checks at the grocery store. >> had to be a frustrating time. >> she came to us and we said, you're not getting enough sleep. finally, she convinced my dad to quietly go get tests done. we didn't know they were going through these tests for months. then they sat us down one christmas and said what her

diagnosis was and that it was going to be five to seven years before she would need full-time care. and she's pretty much been right on schedule. and my dad was this the midst of it. and it's very dangerous for the care giver. people don't always realize that. i know my dad didn't realize it in the depths of where he was. it was hard for him to see the truth. that he was withering away. we finally convinced him that she needed to be put into a long-term care facility. and so i mean, i would juts say, to people going through it, to keep an eye on the care giver. >> and for those five to seven years, your mother had her own communication with your kids. >> that was fascinating. i thought she's not going to know my kids. what was so cool was seeing how she did interact with them in a way that i didn't interact with them. both down on the floor, being really goofy and silly.

my kids adored her. they played well together. >> you have to hang on to those moments. the mother that you grew up with is not the mother that you have now. >> mm-hmm. >> how do you cope with that? >> i had to come to is being able to let go of the mother that i grew up with. because she's not there. and, the pain came from looking at the person that's there now and comparing it to who was there. that's painful. but if i say good-bye to that person, who doesn't exist anymore and say hello on to this person that i still have a bond with, it's much easier to love her and to be with her. >> and being with her mother now also means learning a new way of expressing love for each other. >> my mom used to be very articulate and was one of the best listeners in our family. communication with her now is very different. she communicates on an emotional level. and music is very effective way of xhup kating with her. i was just with her. i sang a song that she knew, her

face would light up. i sang a song she didn't know, it wouldn't. there are still some memories there. that's a way of engaging with her. >> what was the song you sang? >> "you are my sunshine" an old classic. >> an oldie but a goody. they emphasize that every family, it's different for everyone. this is how it is now. she said something fascinating. a lot of times people dealing with this form of dementia, they have an outburst. it's a shout. kimberly was taught by her dad to match in the volume of the shout and then bring it down. that's a held offul hint. she matches it because she wants to say i'm hearing you, i relate, but then brings it down. >> a sult way. >> just finding different ways of communicating with her mom. >> the whole idea of not letting go but saying that mom is not here anymore. but i still have this mom. and i can appreciate the time
